Winegard FL5500A Review

8.7
Expert Rating

The Winegard FL5500A pulls in an impressive amount of channels, cable and digital alike, and the picture and sound quality are always clear. It is a strictly indoor antenna, though, meaning you’ll have to orient it inside your home and that could mean placing it in an inconvenient location. Still, if you’re looking for the best TV antenna you should check out the Winegard FL5500A.

Why We Like It – Winegard FL5500A

The Winegard FL5500A’s most impressive accomplishment is it’s consistent performance when it comes to receiving TV channels. It may not have the greatest range on the market, and it may not be the best-looking, but do you want an antenna that has great reception or an antenna that goes well with your decor?

Pros
  • Pulls in a great amount of TV Channels
  • 15-Foot Coaxial Cable Helps with Reception
  • Great Near or in Cities
Cons
  • Average Range
  • 15-Foot Coaxial Cable can get Messy
  • Rural Area may Need a bit of Work

Performance

The Winegard FlatWave Amped Indoor TV Antenna pulls in many cable TV channels, VHF/UHF channels, and even many digital TV channels. TV reception is also good, as many of the channels are clear and sound great. It boasts a 55 mile range which is pretty standard for an HDTV antenna. However, this means it may be harder to get quality signals in rural areas. The Vansky Outdoor 150 Mile Motorized 360 Degree Rotation OTA Amplified HDTV Antenna has an impressive 150 mile range which is nearly triple what most indoor antenna’s offer.

Design

The Winegard Flatwave Antenna’s coaxial cable is 15 feet long and affixed to the unit. While it does help with reception, it can get messy pretty quickly. And truth be told, the Winegard Flatwave isn’t the most attractive thing to hang on your wall. The 1Byone Digital Amplified Indoor HDTV Antenna is sleeker-looking and comes with a 10-foot coaxial cable so there’s less chance of a mess. The Winegard TV antenna runs on USB power and can be run from your TV’s USB socket, if it has one.

Value

There are discount versions of the Flatwave Amped Indoor TV Antenna that aren’t amplified, but unless you’re sure you’ll be getting a good signal, go with the Winegard Flatwave Amped for the best signal. Overall, the Winegard indoor TV antenna is great for people in or near cities or who can’t install an outdoor antenna. But if you can, the RCA Outdoor Yagi Satellite HD Antenna is a great choice for outdoor use. But if you are adamant about using indoor TV antennas you should seriously consider the Winegard Flatwave Amped.

Winegard FL5500A Wrap Up

There’s a reason why the Winegard FL5500A is an Amazon’s Choice product when you’re searching for TV antennas on the site. What it lacks in range and design it makes up for in stability and consistent performance. Once you’ve set it up, and assuming you’ve done it properly, you’ll be able to enjoy your favourite TV shows without having to worry.
