Product Snapshot

Overview

The GE AHEC05AC window air conditioner is an entry-level pick with a cooling capacity of 5000 British Thermal Units. Available in either black or white, the AC unit has a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio of 2.6, which is a lot lower than that of the best air conditioners on the market. Designed for rooms that are up to 150 sq ft, the unit offers two cooling modes and two fan speeds to choose from, and it also has two-way directional louvers on its front panel that allow for airflow management.

For a similar size alternative that’ll work for 250 sq ft rooms. The GE AC unit measures 15 by 16.44 by 12.56 inches, and it also ships with an EZ mount window kit plus a fixed chassis for easy installation.

Consensus

our Verdict

The GE AHEC05AC window air conditioner is an entry-level unit with fewer features. The AC unit effectively cools down a 150 sq ft room and weighs only 36 pounds plus the inclusion of an EZ mount window kit makes it very easy to install. The unit is also pretty easy to operate, with two knobs meant for temperature control and fan speed control, respectively. It has two cooling modes, two fan speeds to choose from, and a noise output of 56.1 dB, placing it among the top 20% of ACs on our certified, tested list regarding noise. This also means it’s quiet enough not to cause any disruptions when sleeping at night. However, the unit isn’t as effective when the outdoor temp falls under 70 degrees Farenheit.

Unfortunately, this AC unit doesn’t have a digital display or support any smart features. Its air direction can also only be adjusted left or right and is quite energy efficient, averaging 0.4 kilowatts per hour.

Reason to Buy

  • User-friendly controls
    • The GE AHEC05AC has two knobs that are super easy to operate. The knobs manage its temperature and fan speed.

Reason to Avoid

  • Moderately loud
    • The GE AHEC05AC is a moderately loud AC unit, averaging 56.1 decibels. This places it in the top 20% of air conditioners on our certified, tested list.

  • No smart features
    • The GE AHEC05AC has no smart features, so it cannot be managed or controlled through an app or voice commands.

The GE AHEC05AC has a slightly lower cooling capacity than the more expensive GE AHEE06AC air conditioner. The AHEC05AC also has soft touch control inputs, while the AHEE06AC has two control knobs, and lastly, the AHEE06AC is more convenient to operate because it ships with a remote. For a different brand choice, our LG LW6017 review might be worth a look.

The GE AHEC05AC’s cooling capacity is less than half that of the Midea U-Shaped MAW12V1QWT, which costs a lot more. The Midea AC allows easy window opening and closing, while the GE AC does not. Also worth noting is that the GE AC has no smart features and cannot be connected to an app for more convenient control.
