The Samsung Q80B’s wide range of features makes it ideal for gaming, TV, or movie watching, but there are better options for viewers who value great contrast. Still, its advanced gaming capabilities and impressive picture quality offer a good return on its mid-range pricing.

Product Snapshot
Overview
Announced in early 2022, the Samsung Q80B QLED 4K Smart Tizen TV is a mid-range display with a Quantum Processor that boasts 100% color volume for a color-rich picture and the ability to upscale lower-resolution content to 4K.
It’s compatible with content in Dolby Atmos format, and this plus its object-tracking sound technology allows users to enjoy a cinematic movie-watching experience.
It features a Real Depth Enhancer for an added dimension of depth to the picture, and like most modern top-rated TVs, it’s got an EyeComfort Mode to reduce blue light emission.
The TV also has voice assistant capabilities. It’s compatible with Bixby, Alexa, and Google Assistant.
Technologies like Motion Xcelerator Turbo+ help create smoother motion, and with four different HDMI 2.1 ports, a 120Hz variable refresh rate, and a 10.1ms response time, the Q80B is primed and ready for next-gen console gaming, like other best smart TVs.
Consensus
our Verdict
The Samsung Q80B QLED 4K offers impressive value, better for HDR gaming than for movies, as it has a tested brightness rating of 842 nits, which is average.
It has great reflection handling to combat glare, but the 1486:1 contrast ratio is middling, with blacks appearing grey. Picture quality is pristine courtesy of a wide color gamut, and at 4K resolution, images appear ultra-realistic.
For competitive gamers, it offers four HDMI 2.1 ports and a 120Hz variable refresh rate for tear-free gaming.
Its excellent 10.1ms response time also keeps motion blur at bay. The TV’s Tizen platform is easy to navigate, and it has wide viewing angles, with brightness loss occurring at 34°.
The most significant issues with the Q80B are low contrast and mediocre black uniformity, however, it remains an OK all-around option in its mid-range category, held back by middling contrast and average brightness.
ReasonS to Buy
Good picture quality with vibrant colors
The Q80B is adequate for mixed-use. It does have vivid, color-accurate image quality as a result of its 92.87% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space, which is above average compared to other alternatives in its category.
Bright enough to combat glare
The Q80B stays well visible in a bright room even with a 733-nit brightness rating that is only average compared to our other certified tested TVs.
Fast 120Hz refresh rate for smooth and seamless motion
Fast-action scenes are smooth and judder-free as a result of the Q80B’s support for a 120Hz refresh rate.
Good port selection
All four HDMI ports on the Q80B support HDMI 2.1, making the display suitable for next-gen console gaming.
Wide viewing angles
Low contrast ratio, especially in dark scenes
Mediocre black uniformity
Reason to Avoid
Low contrast ratio, especially in dark scenes
Blacks look gray in the dark on the Q80B, because of its average contrast ratio of 5,626:1.
Mediocre black uniformity
This results in blacks looking blue, and a lot of blooming around bright objects.

The Samsung Q80B QLED 4K Smart Tizen TV has some excellent features, but it doesn’t compare as well to the Samsung Q80A in some areas. For instance, the Q80A has a peak HDR brightness rating of up to 1500 nits, while the Q80B gets as bright as about 842 nits. On the flip side, the Q80B has a slightly better native contrast ratio of 1,486: 1 compared to the Q80A’s 1,449:1, and as a result, it is a better alternative for TV watching in dark rooms.

The Samsung Q80B also misses out on Mini LED backlighting, a relatively new technology on the Samsung QN85B, making it appear brighter. The QN85B also offers a much better local dimming feature, making it the ideal choice between the two for use in a dimly lit setting. The Q80B has a significant advantage over the QN85B: its motion handling is a bit better, resulting in slightly less motion blur behind moving objects. Go ahead and check out what the QN85 offers by reading through our Samsung QN85B Neo QLED TV review.

The Samsung Q80B has a few significant differences from the Sony X90K, and one of them is the panel type, as the X90K uses a VA panel while the Q80B is built with an IPS panel. The Samsung Q60B, which we’ve covered in our Samsung Q60B QLED TV review, also has a VA panel, but in terms of contrast, however, the X90K has a better 7,511:1 ratio compared to the Samsung Q80B, with a 1,486:1 ratio. While the Q80B has better picture quality out-of-the-box, the X90K offers better black uniformity, with less blooming around bright objects. Finally, the viewing angles on the Q80B are much better, and the Q80B also offers FreeSync compatibility, which the X90K does not.
