While it comes at a premium price, has a shorter run time, and noisy operation, a large dirt bag inside its docking station, decent navigation capabilities, and exceptional cleaning performance make the S9+ worth the investment for those seeking a cleaner home with minimal effort.

Product Snapshot

Overview

The iRobot Roomba S9+ was released in mid-2019 as a high-end robot vacuum with an onboard dirt compartment that holds up to 388ml of debris and a self-emptying base with a larger 2.5-liter dirt bin. The S9+ works with both Alexa and Google Home (voice control), employs vSLAM navigation, and has a D-shape for more efficient corner and edge cleaning. Like best vacuum cleaners, the S9+ has a 75-minute battery life, and its smartphone app allows for advanced scheduling and setting up no-go zones.

Despite its 3-hour charge time and being louder than most top-rated robot vacuums, the S9+ picks up pet hair large and small debris pretty well from hardwoods and carpets. It also has one side brush but cannot handle wet messes. It uses a high-efficiency filter instead of HEPA and dual multi-surface rubber brushes for more efficient cleaning.

Consensus

our Verdict

The Roomba S9+ impresses with its navigation quality, offering efficient cleaning. Its cleaning performance, particularly on hard floors and carpets, is exceptional. The Robovac offers a 75-minute maximum battery life, placing it in the bottom quarter when compared to other alternatives on our list.  It also has a convenient self-emptying dust bin, and advanced features also help justify its high cost. The robot vac picks up 98.2% of dirt and debris on hardwoods and 98.5% on carpets.

Noise output is high at 74 dB, but the S9+ filters allergens efficiently. The Roomba app is intuitive, offering voice control and boundary zones. It doesn’t offer a mopping feature. The S9’s 25 CFM or 2200 Pa tested suction power also makes it one of the most powerful iRobot Roomba robovacs on the market.

Reason to Buy

  • Decent navigation capabilities
    • After a few scanning runs, the iRobot Roomba S9+ can accurately map a cleaning area, which is accurately depicted on its iRobot companion app, and its mapping software can save and operate off of up to 10 different maps.

  • Exceptional bare floor cleaning performance
    • The iRobot S9+ easily picks up up to 98.2% of debris on bare floors, earning it a top 10% ranking compared to other Robovacs in this category.

  • Great carpet cleaning performance
    • The S9+ picks up 98.5% of debris from both low and high-pile carpets.

  • Large bin size
    • The S9+ has a 2.5-liter bag size inside its self-emptying bin. This allows it to hold a lot of debris without frequent emptying.

Reason to Avoid

  • Noisy
    • The iRobot Roomba S9+ has a high noise output of up to 74 dB. This places it in the top 30% of robovacs in its category.

  • Below-average battery life
    • The iRobot Roomba S9+ has a below-average 75-minute battery life. This places it in the bottom quarter of our certified, tested robovacs list.

Compared to the standard Roomba S9, the S9+ is distinguished by the Clean Base Disposal System, which includes a motor, a high-efficiency filter, and a dust bag, which are all essential for automatic self-emptying. This is something that the Roomba S9 cannot do. Another difference between the two is that the collection bin for the S9+ has an access hole where the dirt and debris can be easily removed, while the S9 does not.

While the iRobot Roomba S9+ 9550 has a longer runtime compared to the iRobot Roomba S7, on the other hand, the Roomba S7+ has a larger dustbin capacity than that of the Roomba S9+. Additionally, the J7+ is a lot quieter than the S9+. In case you’re interested in what else the J7+ has to offer, go ahead and take some time to read through our iRobot Roomba J7+ 7550 review.

The iRobot Roomba S9+ 9550 offers more suction power than the Roborock S7. The S9+ also has a larger dustbin capacity compared to the S7. The S7 comes with a water tank that the S9+ does not, but the S7’s battery keeps going for much longer than that of the S9+. For a similar model, check out our Roborock Q5+ review.
