Overview

The ASUS ROG GT6 Mesh router, released in 2021, is a mid-tier model among the best routers designed for gamers. The device, however, isn’t WiFi 6E, meaning it can’t support a 6GHz band. But its nine antennas and UNI4 tech support a 5.9Hz band, which supports the use of a 160MHz channel, allowing support MU-MIMO and backhaul. It offers download speeds of up to 701 Mbps, ideal for high-demand gaming and streaming. Its mesh system ensures strong coverage, eliminating dead zones, and is powered by a powerful quad-core processor. It includes three multiple Gigabit Ethernet ports and features 2.5G/multi-gig ports and a USB 3.2 port. The router supports AiMesh for seamless coverage, has advanced parental controls, operates on a free network security type, and prioritizes gaming traffic with its GameFirst V technology. We have a guide on the best routers for Apple devices if you’re looking for something more specific.

Consensus

our Verdict

The ASUS ROG GT6 Mesh is a great tri-band router option for gaming. Its 5 GHz download speed maxes out at 701 Mbps, which is excellent and ranks in the top third of our certified tested router list. On a 2.4 GHz band, download speeds are 139 Mbps. It also has a great 5 GHz upload speed, which is 618 Mbps, and a 2.4 GHz speed of 111 Mbps. Users will love the easy setup and robust features for configuration. It takes about 12 minutes to create a network via the dedicated ASUS app. From there, they can easily conduct firmware updates and adjust settings.

However, the router drops as devices move further away, as the range is limited to 95 feet The router offers three LAN connections and is equipped with link aggregations. But there’s only one 3.0 USB port, which limits the connections for external devices. The router has a lot of great features but lacks smart features, such as connectivity to home assistants.

Reason to Buy

  • Fast Download/Upload Speed
    • The Asus ROG GT6 excels at quickly handling data transfer, with a 139 Mbps 2.4 GHz download speed and a 701 Mbps 5 GHz download speed. This places it in the top 25% of the category in both respects.

    • The router also has a 619 Mbps 5 GHz upload speed in the top 10%. Its 2.4 GHz upload speed is also good, which clocks in at 111 Mbps, placing it in the top 25% of the category.

  • Easy to install and operate
    • The router is incredibly easy to set up and configure, as the interface is easy and be set up directly from the dedicated app that works both for Android and Apple. Creating a network takes about 12 minutes, according to setup tests.

Reason to Avoid

  • WiFi speed drops off at long range
    • Users experience weaker speeds at longer ranges, as tests show that speeds drop to 399 Mpbs at 50 feet.

  • Connection range is limited
    • The signal doesn’t extend through larger homes, as the connection drops off at about 95 feet.

  • Limited USB Connectivity
    • There’s limited capability to connect external devices, as the router only comes with a single 3.0 USB port.

  • Mediocre Latency
    • The latency is 21.89 ms, which is in the bottom third of routers.

The ASUS ROG GT6 is faster and better for gaming than the ASUS RT-AX86S, as it offers mesh and has a max download speed of 701 Mbps, whereas the RT-AX86S caps at 563 Mbps Also, it boasts broader coverage due to its mesh system, making it ideal for larger spaces. The RT-AX86s includes four Gigabit Ethernet ports and two USB 3.2 ports. The GT6 includes three Ethernet ports, including multi-gig ports, for enhanced connectivity options, catering to gaming enthusiasts with extensive network needs. But the GT6 only has one USB port. At 2.4 GHz, the ASUS ROG GT6 Mesh outperforms the TP-Link Archer AXE75 in speed. The ASUS runs download speeds of 701 Mbps, while the TP-Link runs at 309 Mbps. However, the TP-Link offers one more LAN port than the ASUS but doesn’t offer link aggregation. The ASUS also wins in terms of usability. While the TP-Link offers many great features, they are only accessible via the smartphone app, while the ASUS can be controlled via the web or app. See how these routers compare to other models, and check out our ASUS RT AC66U review.
