ZingBox: A Solar-Powered Boom Box For Your Outdoor Music Needs

The boom box is a device that, in many respects, hasn’t changed in years. Sure, it’s added media playback over time, but that’s like getting a cost-of-living adjustment at work; necessary, not exciting. So, as we usually do, we turn to Kickstarter to find something innovative… namely, the ZingBox.

The Sounds of Sunshine

The first, and obviously best, feature is that it’s solar powered. As anybody who’s had to swap out (or buy) D-cells knows, they’re expensive and they don’t last nearly as long as you’d hope. So the solar panels on the top of the ZingBox are a welcome switch; they charge an internal battery that lasts up to eight hours on a full charge, and you can plug it into the wall or into your car’s 12V outlet to top it up if you need to.

Classic Woody

Especially interesting, though, is the design, which is a classic wood box for better acoustics and sound reproduction. The ZingBox is actually a surprisingly flexible device in some respects; it can be used as an amplifier as well as your typical music playback, so if you’re spending a lot of time with your guitar outdoors, it might be a good investment in of itself. And, of course, if you’re trying to listen to your MP3s outdoors, this is also probably your best bet if you’re looking for some oomph behind your music. At 20″x13″x10.5″, it’s a hefty box.

The truth is, you’re going to be outdoors, and you probably like saving money. Just be prepared for a little sticker shock by keeping your battery costs to a minimum; currently, if you want a ZingBox, you can expect to pay $550 or so on the Kickstarter campaign. But, hey, isn’t never having to buy a D-cell again worth a little pain in the wallet?
