Wedg: Email Security, Anywhere You Go

Lately, we’ve all been concerned about privacy, not least because we’ve discovered that, surprise, major world governments are reading our Facebook page and our email. Some of us would prefer to keep our private information private. And the Wedg purports to do just that.

Cloud Email Without The Cloud

Essentially, the Wedg is really just a network drive you can connect to the Internet and get “cloud-like” features; in other words, it’s a hard drive with remote access and a Web interface. It comes in sizes of up to 2 terabytes, but what really makes it stand out are the various options you’ve got for putting your files up.

It’s worth noting that the Wedg is nothing new; I have something a lot like this sitting behind my TV storing movies I’ve downloaded from Amazon. What’s interesting about it is, first of all, the fact that you’ve got 256bit SSL and TLS encryption for accessing your email and files. That’s not precisely bulletproof; no form of computer security really is, for long. But it is a lot more secure than just asking for a password.

On the technical end, probably the best feature about this is that you can swap out the hard drives, as you need more space for your stuff; most items like this are in fact self-contained units.

Files When You Want Them

Like we said, there’s nothing incredibly revolutionary about the Wedg, aside from incorporating more security features. But those security features can be compelling if you feel like your privacy is being invaded. And even if you don’t, it’ll still fit the bill for a lot of company IT departments looking for “cloud” storage for sensitive documents. The price is right as well; currently, if you want a Wedg, they start at just $200 without a hard drive.
