There is no shortage of Super Mario Bros. collectibles. Don’t believe me? Just do a Google search for “super mario bros accessories” and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Entering the fray today is this: the Super Mario Bros. watch. But what separates this collectible from the rest are its cost: $18,950. Yes, for a wallet and bank account wincing almost $19,000 you can too can have this time piece.
Who will buy this? Not many. And because of that, it will be limited edition, though the maker, Romaine Jerome hasn’t used such branding in its publicity.
The time piece was built to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. game, which first debuted on the Nintendo, otherwise known as the NES, the Nintendo Entertainment System, in 1985. Though, just for clarity’s sake, it’s important to note that Mario first appeared in Donkey Kong, so his existence extends beyond the watch’s 30 year celebration.
The 46mm case, made from black titanium, is fairly opulent looking and would probably fetch a high price regardless of its branding. Though, I can’t decide if the laminted pixel like props – the mushroom, foliage, clouds and of course Mario – add more allure or reduce it. Regardless, those buying this watch will have to be both a die hard Super Mario Bros. fan as well as a rich one.
