The Isle Of Man TT, Like You’ve Never Seen It (video)

Modern video technology has allowed us to record some spectacular things, and really put us in the shoes of somebody, say, doing something incredibly dangerous, whether it’s extreme sports or “just” climbing a cell phone tower. But that’s put to rather dramatic demonstration in this video.

Some Background

The Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) is one of the most dangerous motorcycle races in the world, and winning it is among the most prestigious honors a motorcycle racer can put on his resume. It’s a narrow, twisting course on public streets raced at speeds of 120 miles per hour: Races are held over the course of two weeks and essentially shut down the Isle of Man thanks to having to close so many roads. Needless to say, it’s also highly popular and always fun to watch. But until recently, getting into the race was hard to do. Cue modern technology.

Heavy Coverage

Essentially, this video is assembled from footage shot by multiple cameras located on one racer, combined with other footage of the race. It’s almost ridiculous how much footage is crammed into this video: There’s POV shots from both the front and the back of the cycle, there’s professionally shot slow-motion footage, there’s helicopter footage, and there’s even plain old footage shot by a camera on a tripod tracking the racers as they whip around the 37-mile track. It’s a far more immersive video than we’ve seen in recent years, and, even better, racing fans can make their own.

High-Speed, On Video

You can actually buy POV videos for a low cost to see how the various laps play out, which is likely going to spread as fans clamor to buy more of them and camera technology gets lighter, cheaper, and higher in resolution. And, if nothing else, it’s a great way to see what a racer experiences.
