Office for the iPhone is now available in the app store.  It’s free to download, but you’ll need an Office 365 subscription to use it.  Unfortunately, Office is limited to the iPhone only; it’s not available on the iPad which suggest that MS wasn’t interested in building two versions, so to speak.  But I’m sure we’ll see an Apple tablet compatible version, especially if the iPhone version gains traction.

Office for iPhone offers a key set of features that are anything but remarkable.  Yet, given the app’s simplicity I’m confident – based on what I’ve read – that iPhone owners using Office will find it a useful addition.

With your Office 365 login info punched in, you’ll be able to access documents from the Cloud using Skydrive, Skydrive Pro, or Sharepoint.  Microsoft promises that document formatting will remain intact from platform to platform.  So whether you’re viewing a Word or Excel doc on your PC, Mac, or iPhone, it should appear consistent from device to device .  And while the app is largely intended to be used in tandem with “the Cloud” , you will be able to edit recently accessed documents offline.  Useful if on a plane or traveling where Internet connectivity is spotty.

Of note, a 1-year Office 365 subscription appears to cost about $100.
