Have All The Sensors With The NODE Wireless Sensor

As technology expands, and our needs for data grow, we’re increasingly finding ourselves with more and more sensors available to us. But who needs a junk drawer full of technology, when you can just buy NODE, a platform for all the sensors?

NODE is fairly simple. The main, er, node, is a unit that pairs with either an iOS device or an Android one via Bluetooth. It comes with an accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer, which most phones include and thus make that something of an odd choice. But the real fun comes with the interchangeable ends on the node that let you connect two sensors at once.

End To End

Some of the additions are fairly specialized: For example, if you have a smartphone, you probably don’t need a barcode scanner unless you’re using NODE to inventory your retail business. But some of the others are fascinating and highly useful. The chroma color scanner helps you find and reproduce colors on your smartphone. The thermocouple with probe is essentially a meat thermometer, although it might also be useful for scientific work if that’s your bag. And the Clima sensor comes with tools to measure humidity, temperature, barometric pressure, and light levels.

Admittedly, some of these are useless; we’re not sure why you want a flashlight that you can control with your smartphone, and the I/O module really should come standard. But enough of these have day-to-day use that it can’t be ignored.

That said, if you want to sense everything around you, you’ll have to pay for the privilege; the NODE itself costs $100 to $150, and each attachment runs between $25 and $75. But if you need multiple sensors, whether you’re a decorator or just a chef looking for more data, this appears to be your best option for an interchangeable, useful tool.
