The Epson WorkForce WF-3540 is a decent wireless printer considering its age. It still shines in many departments, but fails in a few other categories. In short, it is still one of the best printers available out there.
Review: In case you want a printer that you can easily carry around, have a look at the Epson Workforce WF 110 review
Even though Epson released the WorkForce WF-3540 more than eight years ago, it’s still a great competitor in the ever-growing mid-range printer market. It’s an excellent inkjet printer capable of handling a high volume of work. And on top of that, it can produce very detailed and sharp-looking prints. Epson still advertises this printer as the “world’s fastest printer for 2-sided printing.” While that statement might’ve been true back when Epson unveiled it, that’s not the case anymore. Still, it’s very fast at up to 15 pages per minute and can even go toe to toe with some of the modern high-volume printers. But, if you aren’t satisfied with the print speed, you should rather go for the Brother HL-L2350DW or the HP Officejet Pro 8710.
You can knock this printer down in many aspects, especially for its age. But, you can’t complain about its print quality. It doesn’t use dye-based color, so you get accurate color output. And you can select up to 5760 x 1440 true DPI native print resolution. This printer can even achieve 9600 DPI through interpolation.
Efficiency is definitely not the strong suit of this printer. Yes, it is an inkjet printer, so it’s going to be more power-efficient than modern laser printers. But ink efficiency is not great at all. And every ink cartridge costs a lot of money. You’re going to be stuck replacing ink cartridges all the time. The HP OfficeJet 4650 is much more efficient than it.
The Epson WorkForce WF-3540 is very good in terms of paper handling and has a capacity of 500 pages. Also, you can use the Epson Connect cloud printing service to print remotely. And on top of that, it also features Wi-Fi direct, so you don’t even need an active internet connection to print and copy scans from your phone wirelessly.
Even though it’s very old, Epson hasn’t really made any effort to mark down its price. Don’t get us wrong; it is still a very good printer. But there are just way too many printers available out there at lower price brackets with the same or better features. For many users, spending more than $300 on this printer will not be worth it. In that case, get the Brother MFC-J880DW instead.
After looking at everything above, we can conclude that the Epson WorkForce WF-3540 still holds up fairly well. If you can find it at a discounted price, you can definitely pick it up.
