Pros
  • Soft, linen-like, hypoallergenic fabric
  • Height adjustable from 34” to 46”
  • Durable, high-quality Siberian larch wood base
Cons
  • Metal leg brackets not as stable as heavier duty models
The Lucid Mid-Rise Upholstered Headboard has a baseboard made with 100% imported Siberian Larchwood, a durable but lightweight hardwood-like wood. Its upholstery is made with BPA-free, hypoallergenic synthetic formulated to recreate the soft, ultra-comfortable feel of linen and is designed in a modern-looking “diamond tufting” pattern. Its leg brackets are 100% stainless steel and allow the baseboard to be adjusted from a height of 34” to 46”. The headboard also features optional stainless steel wall mounts for attaching to the wall instead of the bed frame, or attaching the headboard to both for maximum stability.

It’s an attractive, durable, ultra-comfortable headboard designed to fit most metal or wood bed frames without special modification. The soft, surprisingly linen fabric upholstery material is spot-clean only and the fairly light metal leg brackets may be less sturdy than some with the headboard adjusted to maximum height, but the included wall mounts will add sturdiness. This headboard offers an easy installation process and adjusts to nearly any bed frame. All in all, this headboard for your bed will add charm and comfort to your bedroom and is also the best headboard for sitting up in bed.

It’s made in the U.S.A. with 100% sustainably sourced “engineered wood”, a highly-durable but relatively lightweight composite wood made of high-quality woodshop trimmings and post-milling leftovers. It’s one of the heavier and bulkier headboards available at 68lb, making it difficult as a one-person installation and meaning it may not fit all spaces well. But its dual function as both a high-quality, extremely durable, beautiful headboard with an antique look and light storage and display unit makes it a legitimate piece of fine furniture that could last a lifetime.

How We Decided

We preferred headboards that are made with high-quality, durable hardwood, extra-durable light woods, synthetics, and stainless steel. We liked models that are easy to assemble, preferably by one person, and with dimensions no bigger than 64” high and 54” wide at maximum adjusted height, with a thickness of no more than 3.5”.

We also favored headboards designed in a range of upholstered headboard styles and wood designs, especially tufted headboards with nailhead trims, that can be fit onto both metal and wood frames and are no heavier than 68 pounds for added ease of installation and versatility. We favored models with both mountable legs so you can attach it to the bed and wall-mounting systems.

Finally, we liked headboards that, if upholstered, are made with linen or synthetic linen-like, hypoallergenic, non-toxic materials that are easy and inexpensive to clean. We also liked headboards with easily adjustable heights in small increments. We generally avoided all-metal headboards and upholstered linen headboards.

Best Headboard For Your Bed Buyer’s Guide

The Most Important Features to Consider

  1. Easy To Assemble and Install
Whether they’re metal or wood, upholstered or not, headboards are generally large and can be unwieldy to handle. They can also be quite heavy, so for your safety and to avoid frustration or accidents that can ruin your bed or the headboard, it’s best to choose a headboard that can be easily installed without specialized tools- even by one person. Unlike mattresses, headboards tend to not have many parts and shouldn’t present too much of a challenge, but unless you want to wind up spending extra money on having it installed by professionals, make sure that it can easily be done by you. On that note, it’s vitally important to make sure the headboard you buy can be installed at all on your mattress since you’re buying them separately. Most high-quality headboards are built for ease of installation on just about any mattress of the corresponding size- but always apply due diligence here.
  2. High-Quality Hardwood
While headboards generally shouldn’t be taking a lot of abuse, it’s still a good idea if you’re choosing a wooden model to make sure it’s constructed of high-quality, treated hardwood, and not pine or another light, inexpensive wood- though there are some non-hardwoods that have high durability like treated bamboo. Not only will it be more durable during transportation and installation, but hardwood lasts longer, looks better finished and varnished, and is less vulnerable to pests.
  3. Can Be Installed On Your Bed Frame
It might seem obvious, but it’s vitally important to make sure the headboard you buy can actually be installed at all on your bed frame without modification since you’re buying them separately. Most high-quality headboards are built for ease of installation on just about any bed frame of the corresponding size- but always apply due diligence here- and it goes without saying that it matches the size of your bed frame and mattress- a headboard made for twin beds won’t generally be installable on a headboard made for a queen-size bed.

Headboard For Your Bed FAQs

What’s the purpose of a headboard on a bed?

Headboards can serve a number of both practical and aesthetic functions. A great-looking headboard will add a veneer of sophistication and elegance to your bed room and bed frame, which makes it a great option if you initially buy a bed frame without a headboard included and want to upgrade the look and feel of your boudoir. Additionally, if you like to read a book in bed or sit up in the morning to have breakfast or coffee in bed, a fine upholstered headboard makes it comfortable to do so- and the variety of high-quality, ultra comfortable synthetic fabrics now available makes it possible even on a tight budget.

What kind of bed frame do I need to install a headboard?

In general, metal bed frames are designed with more retro-fitting options for a wide variety of headboards, but many wood or wood-like synthetic bed frames are designed with mount points as well for a variety of headboards. You don’t necessarily need to match materials when it comes to your headboard and bed frame combination, but it’s important to always make sure of two things- that the headboard you buy is made for the size bed frame you own- be it queen, twin, full, or king. Secondly, you need to make sure that the maximum adjustable height of your headboard will clear your bed’s height- especially if the headboard does not include wall-mounting options. The best tufted headboard may not be the one that fits your frame, so balancing form and function is important.

How do I stop my headboard from moving?

Loose bolts attaching the headboard to the bed are the most common culprit. Make sure that each bolt is tightly screwed onto your bed frame- but not so tightly that it can cause damage if the frame is wood. If your headboard is both wall-mounted and attached to the frame, make sure the bed itself isn’t moving, or you could damage the wall, the frame, and the headboard. If you find your bolts are stripped, you can buy new ones, or as a preventive measure, buy bolt adhesive, which is widely available at most hardware stores.

What is the best headboard for my bed?

The best headboard for your bed is the Lucid Mid-Rise Upholstered Headboard, for its great look, excellent construction, ease of installation, and comfortable, soft fabric and foam design that makes it great for sitting up in bed and reading. We tested most of the best headboards on Amazon, but other popular brands that don’t appear are Pulaski, Modway, and Leggett & Platt.
