Broken Phone

While there are no actual scientific studies out there, it can be argued that women drop their phones more than men. It’s not that women don’t care about their $500+ phone (because believe me we totally do), but it’s more of an accidental thing…that can happen quite a lot. I know from personal experience that I drop my phone at least once a week and have many gal pals who do the same. Here are some arguments as to why this may be the case (again, these are observations and compiled from personal experiences since I’m  a chronic phone-dropper).

6. Less Spatial Reasoning

Women have may be better at multitasking than men, but apparently men still have better coordination, according to a few studies – including one from scientists at the Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, who found that men were better at driving both head-on into a parking space and reversing into it. According to this one particular study that tested men and women’s spatial reasoning, results showed that men have better co-ordination and spatial awareness because their brains could process the changing speed and the position of the car more quickly. Women tend to drop their phone more because they lack sufficient coordination skills or are slower to realize that their phone is on the verge of falling and don’t have quick enough reflexes to catch it.

5. Easier Access

Easier pocket access

Women are used to carrying their phones in their bag, while men have them readily available in their pockets, making it easier to get out and use. Women usually have to fiddle around with their bag to find their phone.  And since they’re in a hurry to answer it or look at a needed app, the phone can easily slip out of their hand as they try to frantically get to it.  This happens to me all the time. Maybe I have too much crap in my purse (as women usually do) that it gets lost all the time and I’m so focused on finding it that when I get it out of my bag, my clumsy self somehow always drops it.

4. Better Reflexes

Men appear to have faster reflexes than women so even if they’re clumsy and drop their phone, they have a better chance of catching it before it hits the floor because of their reflexes. My husband is really good at this and can even catch my phone when it’s about to drop out of my hand. However, when I try to go for the falling phone, my hands are always a bit too late.

3. Multitasking

Woman Multitasking and Overworked

As mentioned above, women are great multi-taskers, however, since we can do many things at once, sometimes on of those things falls through our hands and drops (like a phone). We’re busy trying to talk, walk, answer phones, pay for things, etc., that sometimes a few things get overlooked. Sometimes you lose focus on one thing and usually (for me, at least), dropping my phone is one of them. There’s only so much we can do before something slips!

2. Phone=Wallet

Phone Wallet

This one is tied to the easy access point above. Since men usually carry both their wallet and their phone in their pockets, they’re always checking to make sure that both are still nested safely in there. So dropping their phone is almost equivalent to dropping their wallet. Women have purses and bags to carry around so its easy to sometimes drop stuff from your purse while you’re looking for something else (it’s happened to me countless times).

1. Bigger Hands

Men have bigger hands

Men have bigger hands than women so they can get a good grip on their phone. Women’s hands are tinier and are more than likely moisturized (i.e. slippery) well, so things can easily slip from our grip.

  1. Way to go. Just because you personally are a clutz who can’t keep hold of your phone & have read a couple of articles that might give you an easier explanation, please don’t take the rest of us back 50 years in feminism. I despair.

  2. I firmly believe it’s because the pockets in women’s clothing is ridiculously shallow. 90% of my phone incidents wouldn’t have happened if I had a decent pocket in my pants.

  3. this true! lol ive broken 4 phones over a year span. i drop my phone atleast twice a week lol. im very clumsy with my phone.sometimes my outfits dont have pockets. i often hate taking it in and out of my purse repeatedly.

  4. I found this article right after I dropped my own phone. (Thank God for screen protectors!) In my experiences, it’s not just my phone that I drop on a regular basis. I also tend to drop my books, my glasses, and, more frequently, MYSELF. I love how this article just gave me more excuses to feed my parents the next time they see a new crack in my screen protector! XD

  5. I think the real reason is that women drop their pants in the bathroom more often than men do. If it is in the back pocket, it can easily fall out when the lady sits down to pee, sometimes in the toilet, but just as often on the floor. My phone doesn’t fit in the front pocket, so sadly, yes, I speak from experience.

  6. That makes sense, however I beg to disagree about the big hands. I don’t really think
bigger hands mean better grip. As a matter of fact, bigger hands can be very clumsy,
and it’s kind of a hassle to use most gadgets. You’re right about slippery hands, girls
are more likely to use moisturizer, but you know times are changing, and many guys,
including me, are also concern about health, and personal care. Overall, your article
is pretty interesting, but IMHO you girls are very careful while doing things :-)
