Say hello to the all new 2014 Range Rover Sport. Land Rover unveiled its full-sized brother at the LA Auto Show last year, and while they both have similar design cues, the Range Rover Sport is 800-pounds lighter than the previous iteration, and apparently weighs 100-pounds less than the full size Range Rover outfitted with comparable equipment.
The weight reduction is attributable to its all-new high strength aluminum structure. But that’s hardly the most exciting part. In addition to be being afforded a new look, the Range Rover Sport is more aerodynamic, yet boasts a 7-inch longer wheelbase, though it’s only 2.5-inches longer than the last Range Rover Sport. The result? There is now an electronically controlled third row of folding seats, which is probably adequate for children and those weighing south of 100lbs.
According to Land Rover, the 2014 Range Rover Sport is the most agile and responsive Land Rover “ever”. And some of that can be attributed to the all new powertrain options. At the standard level your Range Rover Sport will come equipped with a 340HP supercharged V6. Dump more cash, and you can score a 510hp supercharged V8 engine. Both are mated to an eight speed automatic transmission by ZF, which if it’s the same one that is found in the 750Li, which I drove in January, you’ll be in for serious treat, a really smooth treat.
Other features new to the 2014 Range Rover Sport include Intelligent Stop/Start technology to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions; fully automatic Terrain Response 2 system; and wheel options ranging from 19-22 inches.
