And there’s yet another competitor throwing its hat into the steadily crowding e-reader arena (we get any more hats in there and we could open up a millenery shop!), but it’s not exactly from a source you’d expect.

Creative Labs is taking a run at the market, with a unit they’re calling the Zii MediaBook. Now, this actually has some pretty choice add-ons with it, like a touchscreen, text to speech functionality (it will READ you a book) and an SD slot, plus, it will be “Internet-enabled”, though no one’s sure if it means 3G or WiFi.

Also on the unsure list are the Zii’s release date, its price structure and any content delivery methods, (pictures of the device were also in short supply) though word is Creative’s in talks with several different providers, and not just for books, either. This could be one to watch…or Creative Labs could think better of it and stay out altogether.

The iPhone officially went on sale yesterday from China’s Unicom. While they lacked the same frenzied fans as the US – that was during the initial Gen 1 launch – a few lines did form leaving queued customers in the rain for up to 7 hours. The first owner of an official iPhone in China – they’ve long been available on the gray market – is Zhi Xianzhong.

Price for the handset with a 3 year, yes 3 year contract starts at 4,999 yuan (about $732) for the 8GB 3G model or 6,999 yuan (about $1,025) for the 32GB 3GS version. Oh, and that price doesn’t even include WiFi, which has been left out of the handsets due to government oversight.

The success of the Chinese iPhone will be relatively limited given the price which will drop, but probably never enough for the majority to afford it.

The range will last up to a radius of 150 feet away from you car and would be great for camping, tailgating, and beyond. You could even have traveling video game competitions in your SUV while you drive from Inglewood to Compton. Anybody like this product?

In an effort to “keep they heads ringing”, this new Equaliser music hat uses a sound reactive blue luminescent display to actively show the world around you that you’re listening to music by a constant surge of ascending and descending lights you’d typically associate with a digital equalizer. Nice giant sentence I just cultivated!

Looking a a bit to close to the WiFi symbol, you’ll probably be mistaken for some type of roving bandwidth experiment. To that effect, this could work it’s way into someone’s creative Halloween costume no diggity.

As you can see from the picture, all you do is plug your MP3 player in and the hat will play the music back through embedded speakers and also do a little EQ light show.

You can pre-order the hat now but stock won’t filled until next week. The pricing is at $32

The Xbox 360 might reign supreme in the game department, but from a hardware perspective it stills falls short when compared to the PS3. You’re probably think I’m talking about Blu-ray, right? Wrongzo. I’m talking about the lack of built-in WiFi. And it now looks like you’re gonna have to drop a pretty penny if you want your 360 to have the latest and greatest in wireless connectivity, because Gamestop currently lists the Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter for $100. If you commit now you can expect it to ship 11/3, but seeing as it costs 1/3 as much as a brand new Elite system I’d suggest you take a big fat pass.

If you’ve ever spent time cruising around looking for a WiFi hotspot to patch your laptop in to, you’ll know that sometimes that’s a tall order that’s much easier said than done. But now, thanks to the WiFi Seeker and Light, finding WiFi is as easy as consulting your keychain.

One button on the device activates a one-LED flashlight, where a second button will tell you the strength of any surrounding WiFi signal. Talk about your simple operations…but interestingly, the WiFi Seeker And Light doesn’t seem to be available online, but thankfully, the folks at Amazon are more than ready to step in and offer, if not necessarily the product you want, then at the very least a product that will do what you want it to.

Of course, you don’t really NEED a WiFi finder like this–just bring your laptop–but the idea of being able to possibly find WiFi spaces while walking around the neighborhood with a little thing like that that probably makes you feel like a Ghostbuster tracking Slimer around is almost unavoidably cool.

Not only does this wireless box offer the latest in 802.11 connectivity, but it enables you to shut down your computer while in the middle of a download or upload and still continue its progress, that is assuming of course you’ve got a hard drive connected to its USB port. If that isn’t enough in the versatility department for you, checkout some of the Fonera 2.0’s other features below:

Use it as a hotspot with a 3G USB dongle

Easily share your WiFi signal and charge for it

Connect to other Fonera WiFi user’s hotspots completely free

NAS enabled

FON Releases New Innovative Web Applications WiFi Router

World’s largest WiFi community releases groundbreaking 802.11n WiFi router that interacts directly with Web 2.0 services
MADRID and SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ — FON today released its most innovative WiFi router yet, the Fonera 2.0n. Furthermore, it announced that its international WiFi network, the world’s largest, surpassed 700,000 hotspots. Besides several new features, Fonera 2.0n allows users to up and download files to their favorite Web 2.0 services with their computer turned off. Fonera 2.0n is now available in the EU for just euro 79 and in the US for just $99.

Fonera 2.0n combines all of FON’s revolutionary WiFi sharing and money making features with 802.11n wireless technology, delivering faster connection speeds and more WiFi reach. Most importantly, it has a growing host of features and applications that make it easy for users to manage Web 2.0 services such as YouTube, Facebook, Picasa, Flickr and RapidShare–even while users’ laptops are off. Fonera 2.0n can also automatically post status messages to Twitter, alerting users to when an upload or download has completed or to when another user has connected to their WiFi signal.

“As demand for WiFi and use of the social web continues to grow, FON keeps creating WiFi products that give people what they really want,” said Martin Varsavsky, FON’s CEO. “The Fonera 2.0n is not only a router that lets you connect to the world’s largest WiFi community for free. It’s a real social gadget that frees up you and your computer from tedious waiting for uploads and downloads and even ‘talks’ to you via Twitter status updates.”

A built-in USB port and Fonera 2.0n management software allow users to connect and manage external hard drives and other USB devices. The Fonera 2.0n can be managed by accessing the Fonera web-interface from laptops, computers and different kinds of WiFi devices including Apple iPhones or Google Android based phones.

While logged in to the Fonera web-interface, users can instruct their Fonera 2.0n to automatically upload videos or photos stored on a camera or hard drive to YouTube, Flickr, Picasa and Facebook, or to download* torrents and files directly to a USB hard drive. Then, because the Fonera 2.0n can also perform tasks independent of a computer, users are free to log out and shut down their laptops completely – the Fonera 2.0n will continue uploading and downloading any remaining files.

Additional features include the ability to backup files to a hard drive, access a printer or webcam from anywhere, stream music via WiFi, and convert a 3G or HSDPA dongle to WiFi. Users are also free to create applications of their own on the Fonera 2.0n’s Open Source platform.

Fonera 2.0n can also help users save money on energy and reduce their CO2 output. A Fonera 2.0n router consumes less than four watts while downloading, instead of a PC that averages 100 watts, so users can reduce their CO2 emissions by 273Kg a year–equivalent to driving an SUV more than 1,500km per year. **

“The deep integration of online file sharing, social networks, and other Web 2.0 content into our already busy daily lives translates into more hours spent at the computer, greater energy use and more greenhouse emissions,” said Varsavsky. “By enabling users to handle basic computing tasks from the router instead of the PC, we’re taking a small step towards reducing power consumption without limiting functionality.”

Fonera 2.0n also maintains all the features of previous FON WiFi routers. Once connected, it creates two separate WiFi signals, one private and one public, that allow for a secure, wireless internet connection at home and free access at FON Spots worldwide. Fonera owners can also choose to make money*** by selling FON WiFi access passes or letting guests securely roam at their FON Spot.

For further information about the Fonera 2.0n, visit www.fon.com

*FON does not promote illegal activities or otherwise violate any applicable laws or intellectual property rights. Disclaimer: you should not download copyrighted material unless you have permission from the copyright holder to do so.

**Calculations based on data from 2009 PC Energy Report.

***Money making functionality not available in all countries.

About FON:

FON started the free WiFi revolution in 2006 with the first Fonera WiFi router and the goal of free, ubiquitous WiFi for everyone. Today, FON has more than 700.000 WiFi hotspots and over 1.7 million registered members. FON also has a growing list of Telco partners including British Telecom, SFR Neuf, ZON Portugal, and Comstar Russia who add FON functionality to their broadband routers so that their customers can benefit from the FON community, thereby enhancing their product offering. Google, eBay, British Telecom, Index Ventures, Coral Group and Sequoia Capital are investors in FON. For more information about FON, visit www.fon.com

I’m about one short and curly away from pulling the trigger on a blu-ray player. And just when I think I’ve found the one, the Sony BDP-N460, it falls short of the everything mark by leaving out the always quintessential WiFi. That’s right, you’ll have to buy a separate WiFi dongle from Linkys (WET610N) to get this bad boy up and running on the Net with no wires.

But despite that one short coming, the BDP-N460 does offer a plethora of features that includes BD-Live, USB input, DVD upscaling, all the latest audio codecs and the ability to stream media from the BRAVIA Internet Video platform including thousands of movies, TV programs, and music from YouTube, Slacker, and, later this fall, Netflix.

The BDP-N460 will launch this fall and retail for $250. Or you can just grab a Sony PS3, which includes WiFi but lacks Netflix integration.

Full release after the ‘leap’

NEW SONY BLU-RAY PLAYER Integrates STREAMING INTERNET VIDEO

FOR ULTIMATE HOME ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIENCE

Device to Stream Netflix, YouTube, Slacker, and Other BRAVIA Internet Video Content

ATLANTA (CEDIA Booth # 1409), Sept. 9, 2009 – Offering the best of full HD 1080p and streaming Internet video, Sony today introduced the BDP-N460 networked Blu-ray Disc™ player.

Beside playing Blu-ray Discs and DVDs, the device instantly streams one of the largest collections of premium and free on-demand entertainment from the BRAVIA™ Internet Video platform including thousands of movies, TV programs, and music from YouTube, Slacker, and, later this fall, Netflix.

“Whether its Full HD 1080p or streaming video and audio from the Internet, entertainment comes in so many flavors that consumers want choice,” said Chris Fawcett, vice president of Sony Electronics’ home audio and video business. “Leading the entertainment experience, Sony brings the best of both worlds together in one player that offers more content than other stand-alone devices on the market.”

The BDP-N460 Blu-ray Disc/DVD/CD player delivers full HD 1080/60p and 24p True Cinema™ output, decodes the latest advanced audio codecs, and is BD-LIVE™ capable with your broadband internet connection and purchase of external memory.

The BDP-N460 also features built-in software specially designed for use with the Linksys by Cisco Wireless-N Ethernet Bridge with Dual-Band (WET610N, sold separately). The bridge helps ease the connection between the Ethernet–enabled player and a wireless router in either the 2.4GHz or 5GHz radio band for optimal streaming.

The model also features a cross search function to make finding Internet content on the BRAVIA Internet Video platform easier.

Since many consumers own extensive DVD movie libraries, the BDP-N460 incorporates Sony’s Precision Cinema HD Upscale technology that converts standard-definition signals (480i) to near HD quality.

Additionally, the model features Sony’s Precision Drive™ technology, which helps to detect and correct wobbling discs from three directions, supporting stabilization of warped or scratched Blu-ray Discs and DVDs during playback.

The BDP-N460 can decode the latest advanced audio codecs including 7.1 channel Dolby® TrueHD and Dolby® Digital Plus, DTS®-HD High Resolution Audio, DTS-HD Master Audio. The model can also output 7.1 channel L-PCM via HDMI after decoding.

It supports Deep Color video output and x.v.Color™ (xvYCC) technology. The model is compatible with an array of video formats, including BD-R/RE (BDMV and BDAV modes), AVCHD, DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, CD, CD-R/RW (CD-DA format), and JPEG on BD/DVD/CD recordable media.

The model features an external port for local storage so users can add a USB flash storage device required for BD-LIVE content. A front USB port can be used to display digital photos.

Available in October, the BDP-N460 will be offered at Sony Style stores, online at www.sonystyle.com, at military base exchanges, and at authorized retailers nationwide for about $250.

Microsoft got official today and says that the Zune HD will ship on September 15th. Actually, the news is no surprise since we saw a leaked display stand yesterday and Amazon, which now has the product page back up, leaked the price a few days prior. So if you want a brand new shiny PMP you’re gonna need to plunk down $219.99 for the 16GB or $289.99 for the 32GB. There’s still no word on a 64GB version, but I guess you never know.

Sprint might be taking their sweet time rolling out their WiMax service, but that doesn’t mean they’ve got apprehensions about launching gear associated with the high speed wireless service.

Announced today, the Sprint Personal Hotspot PHS300S and the Cradlepoint MBR-1000 Broadband Router both accept 3G and 4G USB dongles and turn the single user broadband service into a WiFi hotspot. The PHS300S can facilitate up to 4 users while the MBR-1000 allows up to 32 separate devices to jump aboard.

Both devices are available now for $159.99 and $249.99 respectively.

Sprint adds 4G to Mobile Broadband Router Portfolio as it Prepares to Launch 4G in More Markets

Any Wi-Fi-enabled device becomes a 4G device with new Sprint 4G Mobile Broadband Routers

Users can create Wi-Fi hotspots by connecting multiple Wi-Fi devices, such as smartphones, laptops and cameras to Sprint 3G/4G networks

Overland Park, Kan. – August 5, 2009 –The search for the elusive Wi-Fi hotspot is a thing of the past for Sprint mobile broadband customers. Instead of hunting for a coffee shop or other fixed hotspot, Sprint’s new Mobile Broadband Router products connect multiple Wi-Fi-enabled devices at 3G or 4G mobile broadband speeds where Sprint 3G and 4G networks are available.

On the heels of launching the Novatel Wireless MiFi 2200 intelligent mobile hotspot – which allows customers to simultaneously bridge several Wi-Fi devices to America’s most dependable 3G network1 – Sprint now adds two 3G/4G Mobile Broadband Routers to its mobile broadband arsenal: Sprint Personal Hotspot PHS300S and Cradlepoint MBR-1000 Broadband Router for business, each featuring both 3G and 4G connectivity. These devices are available for use with any Sprint 3G or 4G data plan ranging from $39.99 to $79.99 per month (excluding taxes and surcharges).

Used in combination with Sprint mobile broadband devices, like the 3G/4G USB Modem U300, these Mobile Broadband Routers can simultaneously connect Wi-Fi-enabled smartphones, laptops, MP3 players, cameras, gaming devices and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices to the Sprint 3G and 4G networks. Used with a broadband device, The routers provide access to the turbo-charged Sprint 4G network as it continues to roll out and access to America’s most dependable 3G network virtually everywhere else. Users can enjoy secure, high-speed connections from virtually any location, whether on a family outing at the beach or doing business at a remote job site.

Sprint Personal Hotspot PHS300S supports up to four simultaneous Wi-Fi connections and Cradlepoint MBR-1000 Broadband Router for business supports up to 32 simultaneous Wi-Fi connections. Both routers will support all of Sprint 3G and Sprint 4G mobile broadband USB devices.
“These mobile broadband routers provide an unprecedented bridge to high-speed network performance for multiple Wi-Fi devices or multiple users,” said Todd Rowley, vice president, Sprint 4G. “The addition of these mobile hotspot products offers even faster connectivity speeds to Wi-Fi users without the need to find a Wi-Fi hotspot. These two new products can potentially connect the Sprint 3G and 4G networks to the hundreds of millions of Wi-Fi-enabled devices in the U.S. today.”

The ability of these Mobile Broadband Routers to be used with both 3G and 4G networks will offer added advantages for a growing number of Wi-Fi users across the country. The Sprint Now Network already features 3G speeds that are faster in more places than the AT&T network.2 As the turbo-charged Sprint 4G network continues to roll out in markets across the country, customers will be able to further optimize the performance of their Wi-Fi devices, using them to connect them with the industry’s fastest available network speeds.

Sprint Personal Hot Spot PHS300S is priced at $159.99 and available in select Sprint retail stores within Sprint 4G markets, telesales, business sales and at www.sprint.com. Cradlepoint MBR1000 broadband router is priced at $249.99 and is available via business sales, telesales and online at www.sprint.com (all prices exclude taxes).

The first and only national carrier to offer 4G wireless services, Sprint currently offers 4G in Baltimore and will launch 4G in Portland, Atlanta and Las Vegas in August. Sprint 4G provides average downlink speeds of 3-6 Mbps and peak downlink speeds of over 10 Mbps, three to five times faster than today’s 3G service from any carrier (based on average download speeds).

The following markets are included on the list to experience Sprint 4G in 2009: Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Portland and Seattle. Also available for customers nationwide is the Sprint 3G/4G USB Modem U300, which provides the best of both worlds – the fast 3G speeds and lightning-fast 4G speeds wherever 4G is available.

For additional information on Sprint 4G mobile broadband products and plans, visit www.sprint.com/4G.

If you mansion’s WiFi connection, or lack there of has got you down, fear not, for hField Technologies is here to save your from interrupted YouTube streams. Announced yesterday, the Wi-Fire, which is in its 3rd iteration, claims to increase your computer’s wireless connection by up to 1,000 feet. It’s limited to b and g speeds, but since it’s 30% lighter and 40% smaller than the previous versions, and appears to clip conveniently to the top of your laptop and plug in via USB, I’d say they’ve got a winner. Just keep in mind that it draws some added juice, which means less battery power.

You can grab one now for $59.
