Sony’s newest point and shoot camera, the TX-200V, is not only the toughest that they’ve ever released, but perhaps the most beautiful (a word we don’t use lightly).  It was announced along with two new W series shooters, the DSC-WX70 and DSC-WX50, over the weekend.

We’ve all heard of water proof or water resistant clothing, but generally that involves a special material that is lined into the fabric.  Gortex is a good example of this tech, which is both waterproof and breathable.  But that’s costly and not all that practical.  And while you can spray your shoes with a “water proofing” it will never equate to the same benefits as Gortex.  So what’s your resolve?

We’ve all got them: friends that destroy their consumer electronics.  Or perhaps it’s a close loved one or girlfriend.  Sorry ladies, but you have more of a tendency to destroy electronics, than guys.  Last week Nikon introduced their all new COOLPIX AW100, which they say is one of the slimmest, yet most rugged in its class.

From a ordinary standpoint the AW100 can capture 16 megapixel photos, has a 3200 ISO for semi-low light situations and can capture full HD video, as in 1080.  But what really makes the AW100 the powerhouse that it is, is its ability to withstand the elements, and by elements we mean anything you or your drunk friends can throw at it.  Okay, so throwing might not be the best idea, but it can survive a 5-foot drop, which should account for those of you about 6-feet or slightly taller.  It’s also built to withstand nature’s elements, which allows it to function in 14°F and be sumberged to a depth of 33 feet.  All of the connectors, including the SD card slot, battery compartment, HDMI mini connector and USB slot are all sealed to insure nothing seeps in or gets out.

Olympus is walking on thin ice as of recent.  And we’re not talking about the company’s balance sheet.  They’re now issuing new product announcements that are in fact an iteration of a previous product with a minor update.  

Case in point is the TG-810.  It’s effectively the same tough camera as the TG-610 – both boasts a 5x optical zoom, 3-inch LCD and 14 megapixel sensor – but can be submerged to a greater depth of 30 foot and dropped from a height of 6.6 feet.  The TG-610 claims a spec of 16 feet in water and the ability to withstand a 5 foot drop. However, the TG-810 does include a GPS chip for geo tagging photos as well as a compass.

And for that you’ll pay $399.99, a $100 premium over the TG-610.

The Pentax Option WG-1 captures 720p HD video, has a 14 megapixel sensor, 2.7-inch LCD and a 5x optical zoom.  It can survive in water up to 33 feet, take on a 5 foot drop and keep snapping in temperatures as cold as 14 degrees F.  But that’s not all.  Surrounding the lens are 5 LEDs for illuminating closeups – something they call Digital Microscope mode - and if your heavy set friend, who weighs less than 220lbs, sits down on the camera it won’t be a problem.
