It turns out that Amazon was totally B-S-ing us with the release date of December 31st, 2012 for the game Kinect Star Wars. Today, we learned that it will release April 3rd, which if you recall is what we “half expected.” On top of that, we’ve also learned that it will include five dynamic modes, allowing you to control a Speeder Bike, fight Count Dooku and Darth Vader and even boogie (yes dance) to your favorite Star Wars inspired tunes.

With five dynamic modes – Jedi Destiny: Dark Side Rising, Podracing, Rancor Rampage, Galactic Dance Off and Duels of Fate – “Kinect Star Wars” makes it possible for Star Wars fans of all ages to delve into immersive Star Wars experiences. In addition to the previously announced Jedi, Podracing and Rancor modes, Xbox 360 and LucasArts have today unveiled new additions to the game, including:

New experiences within Jedi Destiny Mode, including:

Space battles:As you travel the Galaxy to face an evil that threatens to undermine the fabric of the Republic, you’ll engage with forces of the Empire in intense space battles

Speeder Bikes and Landspeeders: Pilot iconic Speeder Bikes and Landspeeders on your epic journey

New duels:Battle opponents like Count Dooku and Darth Vader on your journey to become a Jedi

New Duels of Fate mode, a battle-by-battle experience to sharpen your Jedi skills against the Dark Side.

New Galactic Dance Off mode loaded with Star Wars-themed pop tunes where those still honing their Jedi skills can take a break to battle Darth Vader on the dance floor or bust a move “Solo style.”

Additionally, the Xbox 360 Limited Edition “Kinect Star Wars” console bundle will feature an exclusive C-3PO unlockable for Dance Mode. With these new reveals and the ability to play in 3D,

But that’s not the only good news we have for those of you holding out for the latest Star Wars game. Major Nelson let it be known that the Star Wars Xbox 36o, the one we told you about last July, will ship on the same day, with the game, a C3PO inspired controller, Kinect camera, a 320GB hard drive and Star Wars noises for $449. If you’re so inclined you can preorder one from Amazon right now, where upon it will show up at your door neatly wrapped in time for Easter.

If you don’t watch the Super Bowl for the game, then you’re probably watching it for the commercials, which are some of the year’s best! Last year, Volkswagen came out with a funny commercial involving a young Darth Fader trying to use the Force against their latest Passat model and came back this year with one involving a dog. But Super Bowl isn’t the only time you’ll catch some cool Star Wars ads. We’ve compiled a cool list of past Star Wars commercials that are out of this world.

11. Old School 1977 Kenner Star Wars Toys

Here’s an oldie but goodie! It’s an original commercial for Kenner Star Wars Toys and Collectibles.

10. Star Wars Special Edition Trailer

Watching this trailer will definitely want to make you go watch the original Trilogy movies! We’re ready to watch them right now actually.

9. Saga Promo for Cinemax

When Cinemax aired all six of the Star Wars movies in HD, the ran this cool ass promo and used Coldplay’s “Fix You” song for it. Good stuff!

8. Pepsi Star Wars Commercial

Check out another old school commercial that Pepsi did for the release of Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith. Damn, Yoda and his mind games!

7. Darth Fader Fantasy Draft Fail

Lucasfilm teamed up with ESPN to alert football fans about its Blu-ray release of their saga, which just so happened to be dropping the same time the NFL started so a commercial was naturally a great collabo. Looks like football isn’t Darth Vader’s thing.

6. Yo Da Man

There’s no denying that Yoda is one badass Jedi and this commercial for the original DVD release of the Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones proves it!

5. Spike TV Star Wars Ads

Spike TV came out with some awesome Star Wars ads like this one with Darth Vader playing golf and using the Force against another player that gets a bit tee’d off. Doesn’t he know, you don’t upset Darth Vader!

4. adidas Originals Star Wars Cantina

Back in 2012, adidas Originals invited you to join some famous friends (think David Beckham, Daft Punk, Snoop Dogg, Franz Beckenbauer, Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown, Ciara, Jay Baruchel and more) for an intergalactic 2012 FIFA World Cup viewing party. Man, what a party it was!

3. The Barkside

Volkswagen must really like Star Wars because they released a teaser for their 2012 Super Bowl commercial, featuring a canine chorus that all bark to a very familiar tune…

2. The Force Volkswagen Commercial

A pint-sized Darth Vader uses the Force against the 2012 Passat. The hilariously cute commercial first aired during the 2011 Super Bowl

1. The Dog Strikes Back Volkswagen Commercial

For this year’s Big Game, Volkswagen debuted their second Star Wars-related commercial, this time featuring a dog getting in shape to take on the 2012 VW Beetle with a special Star Wars reference at the end!

Lucas never ceases to amaze us. Just about everything and anything a kid can wear has been ran through the Star Wars machine. What is the Star Wars machine? It converts just about any product into a must have item. Back in the day it was just figurines, toys and maybe the occasional lunch box. But not we’re talking video games, mind controlled board games and now even sneakers – to be truthful they made sneakers back in the day as well (this writer has a pair).

Unfortunately, they’re designed for kids only, but if you happen to have very small feet you can score your own pair from Stride Rite. There are a handful of versions, but only two of them light up; Lighted Captain Rex (good/Jedi) and Dualing Light Saber (evil/Sith). There is also a Darth Maul pair, which apparently are lighted, but barely, at least when compared with the first two. And let’s not overlook the toddler versions, which are beyond adorable.

You can get your kids into a pair of the light up Star Wars shoes for $56.

The Star Wars brand will echo into eternity. Ok, it might be an exaggeration, but the brand is iconic and to this day could sell ice to eskimos. Unfortunately, the Star Wars video games, at least of recent on the latest generation of consoles has been lack luster. Hopefully that will now change as Lucasarts has finally announced the release date of Kinect Star Wars.

This game will incorporate Microsoft’s Kinect camera allowing gamers to finally fully emerse themselves in Jedi action without a controller. Players will be able to slice and dice their foes by cutting the air with a would be sword as well as move objects utilizing the “force” just by raising their hands in front of them.

Based on the demo video above, it looks like the game runs on a wire system, which means once you defeat an enemy you’ll automatically walk to your next destination, where upon you might be faced with a “force” task or jump that can be achieved by performing the correct hand or body gesture. At the end of the day it’s probably not the Star Wars game for the hardcore fan, but it should provide some much needed fun for those looking to blow the dust off their Kinect.

Kinect Star Wars will release December 31st, 2012 and is currently available for preorder from Amazon for $50.

Since that date is so far away, we’re half expecting the game to change as well as the release date (it doesn’t make sense to release it after Xmas).

It was made for the nerds at the Arisia Sci-Fi Convention in Boston, MA. It stands at 6′ 4″ tall and weighs a whopping 300lbs, which doesn’t include the rice krispy legs that the cake itself is perched on. The maker, Oak Leaf Cake had to invent new cake making methods to erect this confectioneur’s delight and it took their entire team of 10 to assemble and build it over the course of two weeks (the cake portion wasn’t added until 2 days before it was served). The cake was transported in pieces and built on site in a modular fashion. Just about everything was edible, with the exception of the shelves and the home made skeletal system (and maybe the arms).

Who knows how much it cost, but you can bet it wasn’t cheap.

Let me preface this by saying that this is not a full fledged review, but rather some observations from my first four days inside the game world. The review is still at least a few days off, and I’d like to make sure I get the whole guild experience for it as well – but for now I can chronicle what I’ve been through, what I’ve done, and what I’ve seen. This of it as my adventurer’s journal; a telling of the adventures that I’ve been on, and something you can use to gauge if you’ll be interested in the game after all.

The first step after setting up the basic account stuff, was to select a server – and let me tell you there are a TON of servers right now. In all honesty, there wasn’t much of a question for me of what server to get on – I had been listening to “The Instance: The Old Republic Edition” since its inception, and decided that I would join Keller’s Void with them so I might have a chance to meet up with the hosts (hasn’t happened yet). Just a quick FYI, if you don’t listen to it and you like game related podcasts, you should give it a shot, as I’ll be referencing that cast throughout this writing. Now Keller’s Void (and ironic name since my girlfriend’s last name is Keller, and I’ve been able to make many “adult” references to Keller’s Void) is a server that has a LOT of the biggest guilds on it – AIE, Not Safe for Wookies, GAF, and Rebel Squadron to name a few – so it’s pretty much heavily populated all the time. Before the actual launch I was only seeing five minute queue times, but now I see forty-five during peak times. Not a big deal – that’s to be expected right after launch. On a positive note, I haven’t had a single bit of lag once in the game, so they really have their netcode down pat.

Next came setting up my character – now I didn’t really research anything when I went into this (I actively kept out of the Beta), and wanted to go with what “felt right” to me. I had initially thought on Bounty Hunter because the guys at The Instance: TOR were dead set on how bad ass they would be. I also had played a Bounty Hunter throughout my years in Galaxies – however I played a Rodian Bounty Hunter, so as soon as I saw that Rodians weren’t a race option I decided on a different route. As much as I like Force Lightning, I had to go Sith Inquisitor with a Pureblood Sith as my race. Now I have to say, while I understand limiting the races that you can start as, I really was upset at only having such a limited number of choices, especially when races like the Trandoshan are in the game, but not playable. It’s a small irritation though, and one that will hopefully be addressed in future expansions.

With my Inquisitor Caldaron created, I set off on my journey into the (for me) unknown. After watching the epic opening cinematic, I was deposited on Korriban to begin my story – and the story started out great. I had never seen such a personal story (and FULLY voiced mind you) in an MMO before. Normally there’s just a small cookie cutter story to get you going, and then you’re on your own (at least in the ones I’ve played – I’ve still never played WoW), so it was refreshing to be presented a good single player experience. The dialogue wheel – a staple from BioWare games – is also a great touch, and really helps fleshing out the story and making it your own.

Quest after quest I went on – running and running. Throughout these four days I’ve done a crapload of running. I actually went and paid the money to upgrade my press edition to the Digital Deluxe edition, because it came with a vehicle – only to find that the vehicle was level locked to level 25 minimum (warning to those thinking you won’t have to run much then). At any rate, the first thing I did after reading a recommendation on the AIE forums was to go to the fleet right away and get crew skills, and let me tell you waht – I’ve become a rich man since that. I picked up slicing, artifice, and archeology as my three – the latter two to make lightsabers, but the first for pure credit gains. At level fifteen, I was running around with almost 100k credits just because of good slicing payouts, and while it meant soloing a lot of the time, it was worth sending my companion away for the cash.

There are neat little things to get you to explore the worlds out there called “datacrons” which give you a permanent bonus to your attributes, and they’ve become my new obsession. There’s a limited number on each world (I’ve found three on Hutta, three on Korriban, and five on the Dromund Kaas – as I just got my star ship though, I haven’t been anywhere else), and finding them is a huge sense of accomplishment. I’m sure that there’s guides online to finding them, but it’s so much fun to do it on your own here. Besides ones that give the stat boosts, there are also others that give you “matrix shards” and I’m hoping to find where to use those at soon. While Star Wars: Galaxies might have had a lot more area to explore on its worlds, they didn’t have things like this (only points of interest) to encourage deep exploration.

I’ve been able to get into a number of parties to do things like Warzones (PvP instances that are a hell of a lot of fun) and Flashpoints (instanced “dungeons” with some decent loot) and something really important to note that the game doesn’t do a good job of explaining is how to get “social points”. You see, there are a number of different ranks that control the gear your character will get besides their level. Dark and Light ranks, Valor rank, and Social rank all contribute to you being able to equip certain things. For the longest time I had a quest that required me to get something that required “Social Rank 1″, and while I had partied with people on my starting planet I never got any points for it. The reason for that, is because Social Points are awarded when you’re in a conversation with other people in it – that means that while you may have fought with people to finish a mission, unless you watch the end dialogue with them you won’t be considered to be “social”.

I still have a LOT of game left – I’ve just hit 18, and haven’t completed “Act 1″ yet, but I’m hoping I can send the kids to their grandparents for a few days here (and maybe the old lady will go shopping) so I can power through at least one story before writing the full review. I also have to experience the whole crafting system, which is super deep in and of itself from what I’ve seen…and that whole guild thing – I really am looking forward to getting in one for that. Who knows, once I finish with Caldaron’s story, I might just go and make a fat Twi’Lek (yes, the game lets you make fat characters which is great) Bounty Hunter after all just for the fun of it. I know I’ll eventually get through all eight stories – but that’s a long way in coming.

If you’re in Keller’s Void, hit me up with a friend request and I’ll be sure to accept it, and check back in a few days or so for the full review – unless I decide to do another entry like this for the next Act. Until then though, may the Force be with you.

After the post I made on Thursday, and the subsequent closing of all of the official Galaxies servers Thursday night, I was hit with a wave of nostalgia and wanted to reminisce with you all. If you have never played Galaxies, this will give you a taste of what all you missed, and if you did play I hope you’ll share some of your memories with me in the comments below. At the end, we can even talk about if this is really the end for Galaxies (hint: it’s not), and why this outcome ended up happening. Now come with me to a time long, long ago in a Galaxy far, far away…

For eight long years Star Wars: Galaxies captured the imaginations of gamers everywhere, and while Sony made some mistakes along the way (some much more grievous than others), Galaxies was one of the most fully fleshed out MMORPGs to this date. Name me another MMORPG that has not one explorable world, not two, but a whopping twelve planets for a player to wander in. And these weren’t just small maps either; each planet was a fully fleshed out world, and they were giant – most were the size of your standard MMORPG world. Each of these planets was chock full of memorable locations from the Star Wars universe as well – not just empty spaces or random bullshit. Want to see Nym’s stronghold on Lok? Galaxies had you covered on that one. Or how about the Royal Palace on Naboo? Yep, you could have explored the whole place. You could even hand out in an Ewok village on Endor is you wanted – Galaxies offered the complete “new story” experience.

I remember one of the most terrifying moments in my life as a gamer happened in Star Wars: Galaxies. I was a bounty hunter tracking a lone Jedi on Tatooine. I had tracked this guy across the desert, and I was finally getting close to his location in an area that looked like a dinosaur’s graveyard. There were large bones everywhere, and since this was my first time in this particular part of Tatooine, I didn’t pay much attention; my mind was focused on the prey. Creeping forward, I saw him meditating and I struck. After a few seconds, the Jedi started to run and I thought it was because I had him – until I got hit for massive damage from nowhere. That was when I saw why he was really running: an Ancient Krayt Dragon had spawned behind me, and was proceeding to use me as a toothpick. I tried to run, but it was too late – the lesson was learned, but I can still remember the abject terror of seeing that giant dragon where there was none before.

Experiences like that were commonplace in Galaxies though, and I’m sure my story is only one of thousands. PvP (player versus player) was such a key part of Galaxies – unlike in The Old Republic, you chose which faction you belonged to (Empire or Republic), and you could change any time you chose by paying the price. It led to a lot of people being double agents and such, but damn was it fun. To initiate PvP, you simply went from covert status to overt, and then you could get involved in any fight. In order to stop people from going overt, striking, and then going covert again to avoid retaliation, the devs were smart and put a cool down on going covert again (I believe it was an hour, but don’t quote me on that). It made for a great dynamic for sneaky types, because you could hide in plain sight, and only join a battle when your side needed help.

Another thing that Sony really did right with Galaxies was how they treated non-combatant classes – and there were a lot of them. Sony realized that a lot of people would be happy just being in the world, and didn’t need to be out there shooting things constantly. This was before the time of FarmVille, and casual gamers were drawn in to the world by being able to become things like dancers, musicians, and chefs. These people were integral to the world too; dancers and musicians could buff you and make playing a lot easier, chefs could make items that would heal or buff you as well. I myself was a Master Baker for a time, before I realized that the entire crafting system was so deep that you would have to do that and only that to remain competitive. Ingredients would change quality constantly, and the planets and areas that would have the best stuff would be different all the time, meaning if you weren’t always following those things your final products would be of lower quality that everyone else’s.

Galaxies was also great in the fact that it allowed not only player housing, but entire player controlled cities and governments. These weren’t the main cities that you know from the Star Wars universe either – just get enough people together and find a clear area on a planet, and you could start your own city. When enough people joined your city would even be rewarded with amenities like a Star Port and a Cantina. You could even vote for who would be the mayor of the city, and place either Republic or Imperial bases to assist in its defense. It was these little touches that made the game just so much more amazing than any other MMORPG out there, and it’s the loss of these things that sadden me more than anything else.

Yes, Galaxies had its share of issues – you couldn’t walk into the Geonosian Bio Lab on Yavin IV without seeing hordes of people AFKing with “/target geonosian, /attack” macros running (to be fair, I did this as well). There were a number of graphical and animation glitches that never got fixed over the eight years it ran. And let’s not forget the travesties of the combat update, and the dreaded NGE (New Game Enhancements). Those two things single handedly ruined the game for a good portion of the subscribers, so much so that players staged protests in the game world, which at that point in time was something that hadn’t been done before in other games. Unfortunately these things caused a lot of people to miss out on the joys of the space combat that came in the Jump to Lightspeed expansion – one of the best expansions I’ve seen in an MMO.

Even after all of the missteps however, Galaxies still retained a loyal fan base – people were still giving Sony their $15 a month time and again. So what happened? I’ve read theories other places saying that subscription rates were too low to justify keeping servers open – but that surely can’t be the case. When DC Universe Online started to see severe drops in the subscriptions, they switched to the “Free to Play” model, and saw a large resurgence. Sony has also used the free to play model on other MMORPGs before as well, so wouldn’t it stand to reason that they would do the same here, and not just shit-can eight years of hard work? It is the opinion of this writer that Lucas Arts is where the blame should land for this. They have another Star Wars MMORPG coming out five days after their license expires with Sony – why would they want to potentially confuse people as to which one they recommend playing? After all, it’s not a big jump to see someone walking in the store to buy a Christmas gift for a child, and not knowing the difference between Galaxies and The Old Republic, and picking up Galaxies by accident.

It’s incredibly sad that it ended up coming to this, but all good things do have to have an ending, that way we can appreciate what they were. There more than likely won’t be another MMORPG that aspires to do what Galaxies did – they’ve all seemed to fall into the same “WoW rut” anymore. So what does that mean for the gamer that never was able to get into the game – it the opportunity lost forever? Well yes and no – yes, the opportunity to get on the actual “official” servers are gone for good (barring some miracle), but some places have been working on emulators for years and are starting to let the public in. SWGemu.com is one of these places, and while you need the original, discs (downloaded copies won’t work, but you can find the discs dirt cheap if you don’t have them), they seem to have the most robust “pre-CU” experience out there.

Going forward, there probably won’t ever be another MMORPG quite like Galaxies, and while that’s a sad realization to come to – at least it was here for a time. I haven’t even hit on how brutal some of the “dungeons” were (I remember fighting for my first piece of Mandalorian armor fondly), or about how varied the race selection was (rather than the only humanoid aspect of The Old Republic), but I think I covered enough for one day. In the future, hopefully others will continue to learn from the right things that Sony did with the game, and stay away from the wrong (officially Sony even said that the NGE was a mistake, and from now on they’ll listen to players). There are a number of great new MMORPGs coming out like Kingdoms of Amalur and of course The Old Republic, so there are things to look forward to. I just felt that this fallen star needed to be remembered for what it was – a pioneer that was far ahead of it’s time.

There probably isn’t anything more we’d rather watch than a Star Wars film (IV, V or VI). Doesn’t get better than that, right? Wrong. Fold some ninja talents into the mix and you’ve got a nerdgasm of action and scifi wrapped into a neat little package. And while it’s anything but a full length film, this 3 minute short has all the makings of one. In fact, it begs the question of why Lucas’ films didn’t include more choreography when it came to the fight scenes. They weren’t bad and Ray Park did a mighty find job in the latter films, but there was so much more potential as proved here. We don’t wanna spoil anything, but make sure you watch it all the way through, and if you can spare the bandwidth crank it up to 720p, though that won’t do much for the chintzy sound effects.

Generally speaking, the last thing we have any interest in promoting are books. Unless of course it’s a book focused on geekery. And nothing probably says nerd, as in Star Wars nerd, as this Darth Vader 3D Reconstruction Log.

No, it’s not an account of Vader’s day to day activity. This book allows you to peer inside of Darth Vader’s insides. As you turn each page a cuteaway model slices and dices the Sith Lord into a set of layers providing a detailed look at the man turned almost machine. Unfortunately, we don’t have the book in front of us, but according to Thinkgeek you can check out Vader’s “creepy breathing to his enhanced muscles, to advanced biosystems.” Ultimately, it will reveal the very technology that keeps the man behind the black mask ticking.

Thinkgeek has it for $19.99.

In our time, all sorts of Star Wars crap has crossed our path. Yup, there is just an endless array of Lucas inpsired arts and crafts floating around out there. Pile that on top of the officially licensed gear from the man behind such films at Indiana Jones and many others, and you’re head will start to spin. But hopefully it’s not the same kind of spin, the good kind, you’d get when you take a drink from this AT-AT inspired liquor cabinet. Errr, make that a liquor cabinet built in the form of a Star War’s AT-AT Walker.

Clearly it’s crafted from wood. Never mind that it’s cheapo wood found in Ikea products and relish in the fact that those legs looks like they can be adjusted. But the real source of awesome is hidden inside the body, which opens up to reveal a storage area replete with a fold out mirror door that looks fit for Al Pacino’s character from “Scarface.”

Price and availability? Sorry Star Wars fans. This appears to be a one off build, so keep dreaming and playing with your cheap, kiddie toys.

We sort of already resent ourselves for posting on this. Needless to say, we are, and as a result we’ve got mixed emotions. That said, what makes Han Solo so attractive when he is encased in Carbonite? It’s a question we’ve long pondered. To make matters more complicated, he is now frozen in “gourmet” dark chocolate.

So why would you get this? Not for yourself. It’s definitely a stocking stuffer or gag gift for any Star Wars fan, big or small. Before you buy, though, keep in mind it’s damn expensive for a chocolate bar – probably a reflection of licensing costs to Lucas. Doesn’t the man already have enough money?

If you wanna spend your money a bit more effectively you could always opt for the Han Solo USB Flash Drive with the Carbonite case.

Star Wars had many cool factors to it and one of them was its massive array or unique weapons. While the lightsaber might be the most popular and iconic, the galaxy actually had a ton more weapons that didn’t get much attention. We’ve found some of the coolest weapons in the Star Wars series that you might have looked over while watching the movies.

10. Fusioncutter

The handheld cutting torch known as the Fushioncutter was also used through the galaxy and consisted of a handgrip and a long emitter, producing a high-energy plasma beam that could slice through practically anything, making it very dangerous!

9. Wrist Rockets

Since they’re light wristbands with a powerful punch, Wrist Rockets are a favorite weapon choice for bounty hunters like Boba Fett.

8. Flamethower (aka “Flame Projector”)

As a weapon that projects a burning stream of liquid or gas when fired, the flamethrower was a weapon commonly used during the Clone Wars, given how useful they were in close-quarters combat.

7. Missile Launchers

These Missile Launchers were used in various types of combat and by many types of military forces. These would totally eradicate large numbers infantrymen.

6. Ryyk Blades

Another Wookiee-based weapon, the Ryyk Blades may look like simple swords, but they could still do some serious damage by a giant Wookiee.

5. Flechette Launcher

The Flechette Launcher was used during the last half of the Clone Wars and fires canisters containing hundreds of sharp flechettes (darts that would spread out over a large areas). A single canister of these anti-personal weapons could take out an entire squad of soldiers!

4. Force Pike (aka “Stun Pole”)

A Force Pike was a commonly used weapon used throughout the galaxy. It features a tip that was a “vibro-edged stun module” that could really knock you out…even a full-grown Wookiee. It looks whatever, but it definitely packs some serious stun power!

3. Bowcaster (aka the “Wookiee Crossbow”)

Seems that the Wookiees had some pretty badass weapons in the form of Bowcasters, which packed some serious firepower! The weapon could unleash a bolt with some pretty amazing stopping power, which was essential for the Wookiees as the protected themselves against other predators of the Kashyyyk’s forests.

2. Blaster

In the vast world of Star Wars, a Blaster was our equivalent to a gun, but instead of shooting bullets, it fired bursts of particle beam energy, aka blaster bolts. It featured a replaceable power pack and was the most commonly used weapon in the galaxy, so everybody was packing one. Since it contained high-energy particles and intense light, targets would be paralyzed or even killed by such a gun. And like guns today, they came in various sizes shapes and forms, from rifles to starship-mounted cannons.

1. Lightsaber

In Star Wars, Lightsabers are the ultimate weapons. As the formal weapon of a Jedi Knight, not everybody can master one, but when a Jedi finally learns the secret of the Force and learns to work his/her lightsaber, all hell can break lose! The very image of such a weapon was bounded with the mythos of the Jedi Order, so you definitely don’t want to mess with anyone who has one of these.

Star Wars was ahead of its time and, obviously, Mr. George Lucas is the ish! He imagined an awe inspiring sci-fi world that has become embedded in our memories forever. We all ooohed and aaaahed at all the high-tech gadgets throughout all of the films, wishing we could all play with lightsabers and have our own R2-D2s. Turns out, some of the Star Wars tech can be found in our universe today and some might come to fruition in the near future.

9. Battle Droids

Battle Droids were quite useful throughout the Star Wars movies. They were plentiful, took orders and spared human lives in battle. The military has taken some cues from Star Wars and are now creating their own battle droids. Named the “BigDogs,” these remotely-controlled robots will be fighting the wars of the future. The robotic war monsters feature an array of big guns, the ability to climb and walk any terrain and features loads more of functions developed for warfare. It also features an extensive and complicated computer brain with animal-like legs, a laser-guided senors and state-of-the-art shock-systems and articulating legs and feet. It normally runs on gasoline but plans in the future are for it to be able to deploy solar shields and powerup using the sun should its gas supply run low.

8. Heads Up Display

At the end of Star Wars, Luke doesn’t want to use the heads-up display (HUD) that’s in his X-Wing fighter. Turns out modern fighter jets use these displays to help navigate and attack, but it’s also now being incorporated into cars. BMW and GM actually have these head-up displays in their cars. The one that the BMW 7-Series has allows you to see your speed and navigation, which emanate off of the nose of the car. Pretty soon, all cars will incorporate this technology. GM is actually working on a full HUD for the windshield that will show speed, navigation and more! Who would have thought, right?!

7. Holograms

When Princess Leia sends a holographic e-mail to Obi Wan-Kenobi, we all wished we could send messages in such a high-tech way. Well a professor at the University of Arizona actually created the first real holographic message. It worked using 16 cameras to create the source material, then two lasers were used to transmit the message onto a piece of plastic to create an “interference fringe pattern” (one for dark tones and one for light) that appears to hover in space.

6. Bionic Hands

When Luke Skywalker loses his hand when battling Darth Vader at the end of The Empire Strikes Back, a medical bot outfits him a new bionic hand that moves as if it were real. This Star Wars tech is now a reality, thanks to new technology from Touch Bionics , the company behind the i-LIMB Pulse bionic hand. It works by reading myoelectric signals that are tiny electric pulses in your arm and then sends tom to the hand, movin it accordingly. The coolest part about it is that this bionic hand works with any computer and Bluetooh signals, allowing users the ability to tweak the algorithms for sensitivity and control five fingers independently for grabbing objects.

5. Magnetic Levitation

The Galactic Empire used an armored hover train to transport prisoners and cargo acres the spice-mine, asteroid-shaped planet Kessel. It ran along was was a magnetic levitation track. Seems like this sort of tech is catching up with us as China has started construction on what it hopes will be the world’s first commercial train that uses magnetic levitation. The new train is supposed to reach speeds of up to 250 mph between Shanghai’s new financial district and its new airport. But this is probably just the beginning of transportation of the future using magnetic levitation!

4. Robots

C-3PO and R2-D2 were the coolest robots on the Star Wars block and everybody wanted their own droid after watching the Star Wars movies Thanks to new technology, we now have robots similar to the robotic duo in the movie. Honda created the ASIMO humanoid robot that can recognize faces, sounds, moving objects and more. There’s also a care-providing robot FRIEND that’s a semi-autonomous robot that can help people in had strokes, are paralyzed or suffer from muscle disease.

3. 3D Chess

In the OG film, there was a scene where Chewbacca and C-3P0 played a friendly game of 3D Chess. Of course we all thought that was cool, but it’s actually become a reality. In 2010, Sony created a PlayStaion game called EyePet that allowed players to interact with animated characters. Sort of like an “augmented reality game,” the cool system consisted of a video camera that captured players and then showed it on a live feed on any HDTV, allowing players to play within the game and its animated characters.

2. Hovercraft

The Star Wars LandSpeeder Hovercraft was a cool way to get around, sort of like a flying car that just hovers over land. Well, turns out that this idea has actually become a reality thanks to Moller International who created a red flyingcar they call the M200G. the machine can hover 10 feet off the ground and cruises at a speed of 50 mph. Because the M200G is classified as a recreation device and not an aircraft, it is not subject to FAA regulations and anybody can operate one. But the price is quite insane, starting at $90,000-$125,000.

1. Lightsabers

The fact that you could kill someone or cut them in half by the use of a simple light still boggles us. Lucas’ lightsaber weapon has to be one of the coolest weapons in all of movie history. Sure, there’s an abundance of plastic and pretty movie-quality replicas, the real thing seemed as if it would never become a reality. Physicists and scientists say such a weapon can never be created because light can never stay frozen in space since it has a tendency to scatter. However, laser weapons are being researched for military purposes. There’s a flying lightsaber called the Airborne Laser that’s a 747 that has been modified to emit a continuous beam of light. There are also several companies working on portable laser weapons for the U.S. Army like the PEP (pulsed energy projectile) that may replace the stun gun soon. It’s more like a plasma pistol, but technology is getting damn close to an actual lightsaber.
