Gaming Rumor: Sony To Bring FireFox To The PS3?

November 19th, 2009 3:52 PM | by Jeff Bordeaux

FireFox Logo

I can say right now that I have never really needed to use the web browser on my PS3.  Maybe because I have other ways to access the net.  For those of you who rely on your PS3 web browser will find it interesting that reports are coming in about Sony potentially bringing FireFox to the PS3.

While no deal has been struck at this juncture, it is a nice nugget of hype for PS3 owners to mull over.  The forever question still exists:  Why is there no browser on the Xbox 360?

Playstation Store Gets Huge Boost

November 19th, 2009 10:24 AM | by Steve Anderson

playstation-store

Okay, PS3 gamers, pay attention, because you’ve FINALLY got a response to all those Xbox 360 gamers who keep laughing at you because your system has no games and is deeply inferior to theirs.

See, the PS3 is getting some interesting augments that will boost its credibility by plenty.  I’ve been a 360 gamer myself for the last four years now, and I’ll tell you this much, even I’m tempted to get a PS3.  Especially with the recent price breaks.

But now, they’re adding some serious firepower to the Sony Online Service, offering music, books and videos in the same way that iTunes does.  Yes, you’ll be able to drop vast amounts of cash with Sony to get your media fix in pretty much every way.  Between that and the new rumors of Firefox capability, well, now there’s some serious force in that box.  And that may get some developers interested in swinging back to Sony.

New Borderlands DLC for November 24th (video)

November 12th, 2009 2:18 PM | by Jeff Bordeaux

61019_Borderlands-03_normal

To help it not get lost in the MW2 shuffle, GearBox Studios is set to release a new batch of DLC for their awesome Borderlands game on November 24th for the Xbox 360 and PS3.  The content will cost $10 and will give around 6-10 hours of gameplay.

Promising more narrative this time around, the content centers around zombies and swamps, giving the whole look of the game a different approach.  Entitled the “The Zombie Island Of Dr. Ned”, it looks just as stylized and fun as the regular game and let’s hope this is just the first of many quality DLC’s for Borderlands.  No word yet on the PC release date.  Watch the video.

Sony’s PlayTV Finally Washes Up In Australia

November 2nd, 2009 10:13 AM | by Steve Anderson

sony-playtv-ps3

Later this month marks the release of the Sony PlayTV, a Tivo-esque HDTV recorder that hooks to your PS3 and records television to the PS3’s hard drive.  They’ll be asking $169.95, at least in Australia, and can actually be used to record TV while the Playstation is actually playing games or Blu-ray discs.

Even more interesting, the PSP will work like a remote for the system, similar to how Apple uses the iPod touch or iPhone as a remote on its own stuff.

This has actually been something of a bit of vaporware for the Aussies, who’ve been waiting on this one since the start of 2009, but Sony made a bit of a splash when they put the announcement that this would come out in the second half of 2009 in writing.  Will it actually make it to market?  Time will tell, but not much of it.

Netflix Streaming Coming To The Playstation 3 Next Month

October 26th, 2009 12:58 AM | by Christen da Costa

Netflix Streaming PS3

Remember how Microsoft said they had an exclusive deal with Netflix to stream their movies to their Xbox 360?  Wrongzo my friend!  Sony has just inked a deal with the DVD rental company that will bring the service to over 9 million PS3 owners in the US sometime next month.

I can’t find the source, but Netflix obtained millions (more than 1 less than 3) of users as a result of signing a deal with Microsoft’s gaming unit and should probably expect the same once the service goes live on the Playstation.  At a minimum of $8.99 a month (that’s the plan needed to stream movies) I’d expect Netflix’s stock to surge tomorrow.

Oddly enough, it doesn’t look like the Netflix application for the PS3 will initially be offered in their marketplace – you’ll need to reserve a Netflix Instant Streaming disc here.

On a random note, Sony has a deal with Starz.  I wonder if this will cause any conflicts; as in will we see certain movies streaming on the PS3 but not on the Xbox 360?
