With Android finally coming into it’s own (ie, owning the smartphone market), the only thing we haven’t seen much of are accessories. 3rd party manufacturers have been wary regarding Android smartphones because of the wide variation. With the iPhone, they know what to expect. That’s finally changing on a larger scale this year, and Philips is jumping in head first with Android docks.

Like the AS111 I tested earlier, the AS351 is an Android dock that connects to the phone through an MicroUSB connector, which swivels 180 degrees and has two supports to help keep the wide variation of Android smartphones in place. I’ve had the AS351 for an extended period, and it has worked excellently with any Android device. I’ve tested around eight different Android devices with it, including several Samsung Galaxy S II phones, the Galaxy Players, the T-Mobile myTouch and myTouch Q, etc. They all work just fine with this dock.

That’s because today, as I explained with the AS111, Android smartphones don’t currently support audio out through the MicroUSB. All music playback is via Bluetooth, which is far less convenient than the iPhone, but a problem with Android, not the dock. When I met with Philips at CES they assured me that the docks already support audio through USB, so as soon as Google updates Android to support it, Philips will release a firmware update to enable audio via USB.

The AS351 is no clock radio like the AS111, it’s a mini boom box. You may remember the Philips Fidelio DS8550 Speaker Dock I tested last year. The AS351 is its kid cousin. Besides for the size difference (both the physical size and the size of the speakers), the AS351 doesn’t include a single rechargeable battery, instead working on four AA batteries. This helps keep the price down and promote longer battery life per charge, but if you carry around a dock for music without the power cable, you may want to pass on the AS351. It lasted a good 7-10 hours of continuous playback at varying volume levels. Philips rates it for 8 hours, though if you keep the volume low and maintain a short distance between the dock and phone, it’s pretty easy to preserve battery life.

It works with any Bluetooth device, and also has an auxiliary in cable so it can double as computer speakers on the go. I actually brought the AS351 with me to CES because I stayed in a crummy hotel, and the dock impressed not only with long battery life but also it’s ease of use. I used it with and without audio cables, on multiple devices, and as a charging base for two phones (there is a USB port on the back for an additional device to charge).

For a speaker this compact, the sound quality is Excellent. It gets especially loud – loud enough for neighbors two doors down to complain. Audio accuracy is also very good, with only a few low and high notes not hitting their proper pitch and some tinny sounds at much higher volumes and frequencies. As far as my testing showed, the audio quality is superb.

There are two things I wish were different about the AS351. First, it can’t charge devices when the dock isn’t plugged in. This means if your phone is on it’s last leg and you don’t have a power cable, too bad. The power drain on just four AA batteries would be quick, sure, but the option is worth having.

Second is a slight audio fade in and out, which occurs at seemingly random times. If you are streaming music, like through Google Music, sometimes the AS351 will drop into standby mode while the phone buffers the song. This may help conserve battery life, but also has a very noticeable static hiss, followed by that silent void that is quickly obnoxious when listening to music. It breaks the mood, whether the music is acting as white noise or just needs a second to load. We all know how pronounced silence can be, and the AS351 get’s eerily quiet too often.

With the AS351 users can also download the free Fidelio software. Back with the DS8550 I wasn’t too impressed with it, but slight improvements, plus how the software works on Android (as opposed to iOS) do make a few major differences. The biggest is the option to automatically connect to Philips docks immediately after plugging them to the docks. Philips still uses Songbird, which I don’t like because it requires music to be downloaded directly from a computer. Fidelio also now includes a basic equalizer and bass boost, along with the option to set when if and when the software activates. Overall the Fidelio software is far more flexible on Android than on iOS, but it’s also not nearly as clean or as fast.

The other great thing about Fidelio on Android is the use of Alarm clocks. The AS351 may not look like an alarm clock, but with the Fidelio software it can be, and it doesn’t require any extra effort on your part. Just set an alarm through the Fidelio app and don’t shut the program down. The only downside is that the dock must be on (so plugged in, lest we waste the batteries). This means the lights on the four buttons remain on, though they are very dull. The bigger problem will revolve around your phone model, and notifications. As long as any Android device is connected to the dock, all sound will go through the dock. That means emails, calls, texts, and notifications will be amplified. If you’re trying to sleep and a midnight email rolls in, that’s annoying. Some Android handsets have software to set what times notifications play sounds, but most don’t, so it may not be worthwhile to use the AS351 as an alarm clock until Google sorts out it’s power management settings properly.

As far as Android docks go, the Fidelio AS351 is a fine one to own. It’s a great balance of solid audio performance, portability, and price. The AS351′ overall versatility make it an excellent product to own for travelers and home users alike. Whether you need to listen to your tunes in a mangy motel room or the comfort of your bedroom, or even in the car over a broken dash stereo, the AS351 has provided an excellent experience every time. I highly recommend it. It’s a great deal to boot for $130.

Editor’s Rating:

4.5 out of 5 stars

Excellent

Bottom Line: An excellent Android dock that provides high quality audio, great battery life on replaceable AA’s, and versatility in use.

Pros:

Excellent sound quality

Good size; not too small for the bedroom, not too big to take on the road

Great battery life

Cons:

The random fade-in and -out of music leaves uncomfortable silences

No option to charge devices while not plugged in

Android docks are finally coming into their own in a big way. As someone who has a love/hate relationship with alarm clocks (doesn’t everybody?), a dock that can double as an alarm clock, completely controlled by the phone…that’s the future. The phone is the center of our world, and everything else plays around it. The bedroom clock may be the first serious step in that direction, and the Philips Fidelio AS111 Android Dock is a brilliant step forward.

The AS111 is a very succinct, simple device. It has a MicroUSB connector for Android smartphones, though will charge any device with a MicroUSB port. It connects to devices via Bluetooth, and only Bluetooth. Android does not currently support audio out through USB, but all Philips Android docks do, so when Android does support it, the AS111 will be ready (after a firmware update to the hardware).

It has a round base with a clock on the front, speakers on the top, and little else. On the back there’s an AUX-in port for wired audio playback. When connected to a device via Bluetooth, the media buttons on the top can control music playback (play, pause, next and previous track). There’s also a button to turn on and off phone charging, which some users will find very attractive for conserving energy. Finally, there’s a night light on the underbelly of the dock. It has a slight orange hue and is very calm and pleasant. The brightness of the clock LED can also be adjusted.

Setup and installation is very easy. The dock works off of the software, so once the Fidelio app is downloaded, just connect the dock to your phone and the rest happens automatically. The clock will set its time based on your phone’s time.

I’ve used the AS111 for over a month and it is an exceptional device. I’m very satisfied with using it day in and day out. The stereo speakers aren’t all that powerful, but as a clock they don’t need to be. If I listen to music in the bedroom, it’s quiet anyways. Even with just 4W of power, I am satisfied with the quality of audio. Obviously bass is lacking, so you psychopaths who listen to Skrillex before clocking out won’t find this dock too appealing. Everyone else will.

All clock features are controlled through the free Fidelio app. As I discussed in the Philips Fidelio DS8550 Speaker Dock review, the software is okay and improving, though on Android compared to iPhone there are some major differences that both improve and can be a bit of a nuisance. Because it isn’t limited by Apple’s restrictions, alarms set will automatically enable when connecting to the dock (by activating the Fidelio app). This sounds great, but unfortunately it does this any time the phone is connected to any charger. If you only charge with this dock, the then’s fine, but if like most Android users you charge either more than once a day or connect to a computer, the Fidelio app starting every time the phone gets power is annoying. This feature can be turned off, but even after I turned it off it kept starting the app when connecting to a power source. Turning it off would also require starting the app every night if you want to use the dock as an alarm clock.

Otherwise the software is good, but messier than the iOS version. It’s slower than it should be and a little clunkier. While writing this review, I found another firmware update, which does speed up the app and clean some of the minor nags I found. It’s better, but still not as good as the iOS version.

The Fidelio AS111 dock on its own is excellent, the best I’ve seen to date. It has a proper balance of size, build quality, looks, and power. The software may need a little work, and perhaps some adjustments from Google, but all in all I highly recommend the AS111.

Editor’s Rating:

4.5 out of 5 stars

Excellent

Bottom Line: A great Android dock that replaces typical alarm clocks and clock radios.

Pros:

Solid audio quality

Simple, intuitive, and sleek design

The hardware has everything users can desire from a clock

Cons:

The software isn’t perfect, and activates whenever the phone receives power

No inherent Android integration will always keep such devices from reaching their full potential

Men. We shave, we make a mess and while we have the intentions of cleaning up after ourselves we never quite meet the expectations of our bathroom sharing counterpart. Roll in beard trimming into the mix and we’re talking facial hair armageddon. Unless of course your sporting the Philips Norelco Vacuum Beard Trimmer.

As the name suggests this handy, battery powered trimmer has a built-in vacuum cleaner, which sucks up stubble in the handle. Odds are it won’t get everything that falls off your face, but it should mean the difference between a couch and a bed, if you catch our drift.

That said, you can adjust the trimmer ranging from a length of 1 millimeter to 18 millimeters, with a total of 18 settings that can be adjusted using a simple and easy, no look scroll wheel. They even say the comb is specially shaped to gently glide the blades around the contours of your face, so you can achieve the same even cut every time.

An 8 hour charge gets you 50 minutes of continuous use. It may not seem like a lot, but that should be good for 10-15 uses depending how expeditious you are about your trimming. Another plus? The blades will stay indefinitely sharp and need no oiling.

You can grab the Philips Norelco Qt4050 Vacuum Beard from Amazon for $39.99.

4.5 out of 5 stars

Jawbone’s Jambox owns the market when it comes to an ultra portable Bluetooth speaker. But that leaves plenty of room for the bigger, but still portable speaker docks. Case in point is the Philips Fidelio DS7700 Bluetooth Docking Speaker.

Before we get into the review, I’d like to point out that I’m a bit of a skeptic when it comes to the Philips brand, at least in terms of their line of consumer electronics. They’re not the brand I think of when I need to purchase a new TV, or in this case a speaker dock for my iPhone or iPad. However, that’s all about (it already has) to change thanks to the Fidelio DS7700 Bluetooth Docking Speaker.

Design

The Fidelio DS7700′s magnetic cover to keep debris out – click to enlarge

The Fidelio DS7700 measures 12.2-inches long, about 4 inches wide and weighs just over 2lbs. So it’s not tiny like the Jambox, but it will fit in most medium sized backpacks, though after sometime 2lbs can begin to feel beleaguering, especially if you do a fair bit of walking. While is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad, there is also an AUX input to accommodate non Apple branded devices.

Included is a magnetic cover, which unfortunately doesn’t automatically power the speaker off. A cool feature nonetheless that will keep lint and other debris from interfering with the iPhone dock and entering behind the speaker grill. A red power switch sits on the edge, while a set of buttons to control volume and toggle Bluetooth on/off are situated just below the dock.

A built in stand, which opens simply by pulling on it angles the 14 watt Neodymium powered speaker at 45 degrees and simultaneously activates an iPhone stand that stabilizes the device in the 30-pin dock. It’s finished in a rubber to help reduce vibrations.

While the Fidelio DS7700 scored well in terms of aesthetics and layout, it’s not the most remarkable speaker dock, but clearly well built. However, I was a bit surprised to see that it doesn’t use a micro-USB or mini-USB port for charging. Instead Philips opted for a 10V round AC charging port. So it loses some points in not only the convenience category, but eco department.

Performance

The Fidelio DS7700′s power switch – click to enlarge

It might be a bit of an understatement, but the Fidelio DS7700 can easily keep pace with iPhone docks in the same class and even sonically out performed some wall plugin docks I’ve seen from iHome in recent. As with any speaker dock, connecting via Bluetooth diminished the sound quality, but the Fidelio DS7700 does a good job minimizing the loss, enough so that switching between the two inputs had me guessing which one was playing.

I tested the dock with a variety of music, ranging from hip hop to classical, and couldn’t perceive any noticeable shortcomings given its relatively small size. Bass was deep, highs we’re crisp and the mids maintained a solid timbre throughout playback. In short, the Fidelio DS7700 rocked my socks and blew my hair back.

Battery life is spec’d for 10 hours. While I didn’t ever run low on juice thanks to the fact that you can power it off a wall wart, I’m willing to estimate that you can chop that number in half when amplitude is maxed out.

Conclusion

Philips Fidelio DS7700 AUX input and power port – click to enlarge

The Philips Fidelio DS7700 Bluetooth Docking Speaker packs a serious punch that will have contenders in the same class and heavier second guessing their product. It delivers meaty bass for a dock of its size, boasts solid battery performance and is compatible with the full range of iOS devices. What more could you ask for?

You can buy the Philips Fidelio DS7700 Bluetooth Docking Speaker from Amazon for $199.99

Pros:

Excellent sound quality for a portable speaker; deep bass, solid highs

Up to 10 hours of battery life on a single charge

Works with the full range of iOS devices (and others thanks to the AUX in)

Cons:

Doesn’t use a micro or mini-USB charger; not Eco friendly in that respect

A bit large for every day commuters, unlike the Jambox

If you don’t have the Philips app installed it demands that you do so

Philips line of Fidelio speakers continues to expand. Last week the company introduced the SoundRing with Airplay. Two versions will be available when it goes on sale later this year, but both promise natural and immersive sound that fires in all directions.

Under the hood are a central bass sound pipe and four high definition drivers – two front-firing and two side-firing. The DS3880W incorpates a a 5-hour rechargeable battery and iPhone dock, while the DS3800W uses the same speaker setup, but lacks a built-in rechargeable battery. Total power caps out at 16 watts and a 5-band equalizer is on board, which can be accessed using their compatible Fidelio iPhone app.

Since both models feature Apple’s Airplay technology, you’ll be able to stream tunes from any iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or PC with a wireless signal. Alternatively, there is an AUX input for non-compatible devices. Included is a remote that complements the design of the SoundRing, allowing you to change tracks and volume from afar.

No word on a price or a launch date.

4 out of 5 stars

Something was lost when music moved to a digital format. Not to MP3, but CDs. The move from cassette players to CD players practically killed the boombox. Sony’s disc Walkman put headphones in our ears, and since then the only place we share music is in the car. That’s why the Philips Fidelio DS8550 is all John Cusack would need in a remake of Say Anything. Yes, this iSpeaker dock has a battery.

Philips, a company fresh out the gates after a serious overhaul, at CES displayed a wide selection of iOS products, including the reviewed DS8550. This iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch dock is no ordinary stand or charger, nor is it a typical stereo speaker to leave in place for groggy mornings or Sunday brunches. No, the DS8550 is made to sit on the shoulder just as easily as any of those things, blasting tunes on Venice Beach up to 11 without a care in the world.

But let’s take a step back. The Fidelio DS8550 is a speaker dock for any iOS device first and foremost, but works as an auxiliary speaker just as well. It can connect to any Bluetooth device. Finally, and a strangely pertinent selling point, the DS8550 has iPad support. Not only can users plug their iPads in and connect them via Bluetooth, there is an app to take the most advantage of the iPad, along with all other iOS devices.

iPad support at first glance doesn’t seem that pertinent. The tablet is great for many a thing, and with a dock can make an excellent alarm clock, an option which has been largely ignored by hardware makers. Thanks to the available hardware and free Fidelio software, the iPad gives the Sony Dash a run for its money.

Hardware

Carrying the Fidelio DS8550 is a cinch. Throwing it over the shoulder requires a bit more finesse…

The Fidelio DS8550 looks and feels like a small boombox. It’s sleek with a full black mesh cover and rubber grips to keep connected devices in place. Four light-up buttons are all the dock needs, though the included remote control is far more convenient to use, even for Bluetooth-connected device. The four buttons – power, Bluetooth on/off, and volume controls – are all that’s really needed. The rest is handily controlled via touch or remote.

The rear has a pleasant silver build with a handle, two air-holes for bass, and power and auxiliary ports. As mentioned earlier the DS8550 comes with a built-in battery, which Philips claims to last five hours per charge. I’m pleased to say that, while such a strict number is questionable – volume level, Bluetooth, charging an iOS device, and other factors affect battery life – I averaged roughly four hours per charge under moderate to heavy use.

Just in case your current speaker system breaks down, the DS8550 can make an excellent replacement

So if your car stereo’s been stolen, or if you want a decent set of computer speakers, or just something for when company is over, the Fidelio DS8550 suddenly becomes exceptionally useful. Not only does it deliver excellent sound on all levels – bass is slightly muffled, and some high notes do screech, but otherwise audio quality is pitch-perfect – you can pick it up and take it with you on the go, and not have to worry about running out of juice.

While testing the DS8550 I had to drive a friend’s car, which has terrible reception and no AUX port. So I grabbed the DS8550 and tossed it in the passenger seat, connected my iPhone to it, and was streaming my music collection in under 30 seconds. An otherwise quiet, droll ride was kept lively by the likes of Bon Jovi, Mudvayne, Queens of the Stone Age, and Tan Dun.

The remote is extremely handy to have…when it actually works.

It’s not all flowers and death metal. Bluetooth on the DS8550 tends to be a hit-and-miss adventure, where sometimes it will connect in just a few seconds and other times takes several minutes to establish a connection. Directly plugging an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch also doesn’t work properly every time, which is troubling. On a few occasions I was forced to plug my iPhone in and out of the DS8550 three times to get it to connect…and that is completely a hardware issue, no software involved.

The biggest culprit of nuisance is the remote control, which can be an absolute nightmare. Wonderfully built, with all the necessary buttons, commands just don’t get through. The infrared sensor is weak and often fails to read presses, and most clicks go unnoticed by the dock. It just doesn’t work half the time. For $300, using a weak IR sensor cramps an otherwise great product. Sadly, I’ve spent nearly as much time pressing buttons over and over again as I have actually listening to music on the DS8550.

Software

Since receiving the Fidelio DS8550 for review, the Fidelio software has gone through one major upgrade. The app isn’t required, and in fact I rarely use it outside of the clock functionality mentioned earlier, because it just isn’t convenient when compared to the standard iPod app. That said, the app is great for a few other reasons.

Fidelio, as the app is called, works specifically with playlists when it comes to music. It’ll play anything currently paused, and allows users to view all the music on the iPod, but only as a list of songs, not based on artist, album, etc. This may be updated in the future, but right now it’s a huge crutch for anyone who wants to use Fidelio without being forced to switch between it and iPod.

The clock and alarm settings are excellent, giving users the option to set time, which days for the alarm to repeat, a choice of four built-in sounds or any song on the device, a personalized name for the alarm, and even a photo to wake up. The Fidelio is great to download just because of it’s clock. The only downside is that the app must be running for the alarm to go off.

The software has a few other tricks, like connectivity with Twitter and Facebook, local weather reporting, detailing battery life on the dock and iOS device, along with several background and clock options. These all slightly improve on the quality of the application, though the biggest crutch is that Philips can’t get around Apple’s requirements.

Today’s Boombox

It must be the modern-day romantic in me, but the boombox disappearing was really a turning point for society. People just don’t share music the same way they did back in the 80’s and 90’s. If you aren’t at a club or restaurant, then the music comes through headphones, and that’s a damn shame. Music is meant to be shared, on the streets if it can, and in the home without a doubt. Without that sharing, we lose yet another small chunk of our humanity.

While we as a society may have moved past such notions, Philips has still delivered an excellent speaker dock with the Fidelio DS8550. Great sound, a solid form factor, excellent options through Apple and Bluetooth-ready devices, and an average of four hours of battery life make the DS8550 a real force to contend with. All that holds it back is a poor sensor in the remote/dock, which makes the control almost useless, and the hit/miss connectivity issues. Whether you hold it to your girlfriend’s second-story window or on the nightstand, this boombox is ready to go when you are.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Philips in the camcorder department, but that isn’t to say the company doesn’t have something up their sleeve.

The ESee HD camcorder records full 1080p video, has a 23x optical zoom (we’re hoping that doesn’t factor in the digital side of things), a touchscreen LCD display of an unknown size, built-in WiFi, and can capture still images presumably in tandem to recording video. Although many of deets have yet to be confirmed by Philips themselves, we’re hearing that that slot on the aperture ring might just be an LED flash, but that’s hardly the tastiest of features. Apparently, the ESee HD will sport something called Audio Zoom, which allows you to focus the mic in on a specific object or subject which should enhance the fidelity and volume of whatever is being recorded. Sounds (get it?) pretty snazzy, don’t it?

At this point in the game we don’t know when it will launch or for how much, so hang tight.

It will be sometime before the extra widescreen format becomes a standard, but if you can’t hold out for the tech to go mainstream then you be glad to hear that Philips has announced their Philips Cinema 21:9 Gold.

It’s not the first 21:9 TV that we’ve seen from Philips, however this one boasts 3D capabilities, or something Philips is calling Easy 3D. The set measures 50-inches diagonally, is LED backlit, can connect to the Net and has a 100hz refresh rate.

But that’s all run of the mill stuff, especially when you consider that it can also display two different images to each viewer negating the need for split screen video game mulitplayer. Course, you’ll need to be wearing the 3D glasses to take advantage of this feature. If you remember we saw comparable tech in Hyundai and Mercede’s GPS car nav system a few years ago.

As of now there is no word on a price or release date.
