Eschewing a fancy name, the Griffin Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer does absolutely everything advertised on the box. Part executive wondertoy, part creative multitool, the Griffin Stylus is a bit pricy when you consider that all three of its features can be purchased separately for a fraction of the cost, but the convenience and the quality of this product easily make up for the discrepancy.

The first thing that struck me about the Griffin Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer was the weight to it. Now, while said weight may not make it an ideal thing to clip to a breast pocket, it feels absolutely wonderful in the hand, with a nice heft that feels sturdy, solid, and just built well overall. The pen’s clip is tight but still easy to slide onto the edge of a pocket, or onto a string, and it looks very professional with its matte black exterior and silver details.

When it came time to use the Griffin, I was very pleased with everything I got out of it. As a pen, it’s fairly standard. It writes well and clearly, without requiring too much pressure or the fear of leaving little trails of ink from lightly sliding the pen across paper. It works just right, and has an easily replacable cartridge when your ink starts to run low, but to be perfectly honest, I expected something a little fancier than just a standard ballpoint. The fact that it is standardized turns out to be a plus in the long run, making ink replacement a simple task without having to search for special cartridges. The only real downside to the pen is that the place where the top half of the pen containing the cap and the laser pointer is located is not intuitive, and both myself and most people I’ve handed the pen to have spent more time than is probably normal trying to figure out exactly how to write with it.

The laser pointer is also fairly standard in nature. With a small circle button on the side of the cap, the red laser turns on, with decent intensity and distance. It’s not going to help you spot something on a hill three miles away, but in an indoor or office environment, it’s absolutely perfect, and considering the presentation of the product, meets expectations in every way. The only concern I have considering the laser pointer is the button placement. If you remove the cap of the pen and click it over the stylus when writing, my hand at least has a tendency to grip the pen right where the button to activate the laser is located, so I am always fearful of accidentally shining the laser into my own eye when I am writing.

As for the stylus third of the Griffin Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer, I have absolutely nothing but great things to report. Using a sort of rubber bubble tip that emulates the feel of a human finger tip, the stylus is smooth and responsive without leaving smudges or scuffmarks common from plastic or hard styli. Based on its design, the stylus also works with devices that use capacitive touch like my laptop’s touch pad, cellphone touch screens, and iPads just as well as it works with my Nintendo DS or other stylus-driven device. Everything I’ve used the Griffin stylus with has worked better than imagined, with nice, fluid, and responsive movements.

If you’ve already got all three devices handy like a true office pro, the Griffin Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer isn’t going to bring anything new to your arsenal, but it does combine the best of all three devices into one handy, good-looking, quality tool. I personally don’t go anywhere without mine now, whether I’m working on something at my desk, using it to sign a check for lunch, or showing somebody a funny video using a mobile device. Without being necessarily original, the Griffin Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer is a quality product that looks as good as it feels to use.

Editor’s Rating

4.5 out of 5 stars

Excellent

Bottom Line: The Griffin Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer doesn’t innovate in the slightest, instead offering incredible performance for all three of its functions with very few setbacks. The price point may be a little steep for some people, but with easily replaceable batteries and ink, the life of the Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer is guaranteed to go as long as you need it to.

Pros:

Stylus works incredibly well with all devices, even those that require capacitive touch like an iPad or laptop touch pad

Pen uses standard ballpoint cartridges when ink needs to be replaced

Laser pointer is bright and clear, with easily replacable batteries

Cons:

The constant fear that you will shine the laser in your eye while writing with the pen

Misleading design for uncapping the pen will make people spend a few seconds trying to figure out how it works

Too heavy to clip to a breast pocket comfortably

The Griffin Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer is available direct from Griffin for $49.99.

The pen might be mightier than the sword, but you still have to pick up either one for that to be achieved. What were alluding to is that people are dropping pens (and pencils) in favor of tablets and computers. It’s an inevitable paradigm shift that began over two decades ago but with the advent of tablet computers it’s our pontification that this trend is now happening at an accelerated rate. However, we’d love to see evidence otherwise. And we might just have that.

The Kaweco AC Sport Carbon Fiber Fountain Pen is anything but your standard fountain pen. It’s constructed from matte finish aluminum with carbon fiber inlays. To further bolster its build quality it uses a stainless steel nib – could double as a self defense weapon – and a screw on cap.

The pen measures just 4.1-inches in length with the cap on, remove it though, place it on the back, and it extends to a more hand comfortable 5.6-inches.

We haven’t used the AC Sport Carbon Fiber Fountain Pen, but Gear Patrol says that it “elevates itself to a whole new writin stratta, with a particularly smooth ink flow normally found only on much pricier pens.” And we’d have to agree with them that this might be the best reason to ditch a ball point pen. But keep in mind writing with a fountain pen takes patience, practice and a penchent for perfection.

You can grab one for $112.

Today Griffin unveiled the “all-in-one pen,” called the Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer. While the name leaves something to be desired you simply can’t discount its utilitarian value.

At the core of the device is the always trusty ball point pen, developed October 30, 1888 by a man named John Loud. By contrast, in terms of era, it also contains a laser pointer. If you remove the pen potion from the body, and reverse it, you’ll reveal a soft rubber tip, ideal for touchscreens.

Griffin Technology calls it a “digital Swiss Army knife.” While we can’t help but agree that it might be the ideal answer for a professor or two, it’s a stretch to call it a “Swiss Army knife”.

Nonetheless, you can pick up Griffin’s Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer for $49.99.

Nashville, TN – September 1, 2011 – Griffin Technology, one of the world’s foremost creators of innovations for everyday life, has announced the launch of the Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer, a precision tool for projection screen, touchscreen and paper.

“Mobile computing is transforming the way we digest and share new information, and Griffin is at the forefront of this trend, continually launching innovative accessories that address the modern day consumer’s needs,” said Mark Rowan, President of Griffin Technology. “Our latest stylus is like a ‘digital Swiss Army knife’ in the way it maximizes functionality of mobile devices while remaining compact enough to slide easily into your pocket.”

The Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer features:
Soft rubber tip designed to mimic the press of a finger, giving users more control as they write, sketch, tap and drag on iPads, iPhones or other touchscreen surfaces
Integrated laser pointer useful for screen presentations
Refillable ballpoint pen for writing on paper

Designed to be an all-in-one tool for artists, students and everyday professionals, the new Stylus is ideal for sketching, drawing, photography, interaction with a variety of apps, and any other use where a finer degree of precision is required. It boasts a high-sensitivity, omni-directional point that won’t scratch or smudge your touchscreen and also includes an integrated clip for pockets and pencil loops for added convenience.

The Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer is available for $49.99 from www.griffintechnology.com.

If you recall, the Olympus PEN E-P1 had a few major caveats when it launched. Since then, Olympus has released a few different iterations but failed to quell the camera’s short comings, that is until now.

First off, they’ve finally built-in in a pop up flash. All previous PEN cameras required you to buy a separate flash, which mounted onto the camera’s hot shoe. Not ideal for the on go photos and practically negated its use time by as much as 50% (night vs day).

Olympus says they’ve also improved the auto focus time, enough to boast the the “World’s Fastest AF** speed” – we assume the “**” means in its class. ISO has been increased to 12,800 and full HD movies can now be recorded with 16-bit CD quality sound. There are also a variety of exposure options that you can work through depending on your fancy as well as a 3D mode, which requires to shoot and slowly pan across whatever image you’re shooting.

Under the hood is a 12.3 megapixel sensor and a new processing chip called TruePic VI. On the back of the camera is a 3-inch OLED touchscreen that rocks a 614k dot resolution. You can touch to focus like the iPhone and administer all your settings, but Olympus says they haven’t done away with the manual buttons, just in case you’re wondering.

When the camera ships this August for $900, you’ll be able to choose between two lenses; the Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm II R ƒ3.5/5.6 zoom or the Zuiko Digital ED 17mm ƒ2.8 prime.

The “pen is mightier than the sword” is a largely held belief. So what about the grenade, hunting knife or handgun?

The Armed Notebooks are an all black affair that are designed to channel “violence into beautiful words and drawings with our creativity!!” Yeah, sounds pretty savvy to us. Each book contains a 3D face as well as a set of pages that further exemplify the weaponry found on the cover. For instance, the Grenade book includes a first page that has a “1 Second” sign to remind us that time is ticking; use it efficiently”.

Each Armed Notebook sells for $20. They’re currently sold out, but you can expect a new shipment in March.

I wonder how this Multi-Tool Pen would appear in and x-ray? Packing 12 tools in side the interior of this normal looking pen, I can’t imagine the manufacturers intentions. Featuring: a hole puncher, a large and a small blade, wire stripper/nail or staple remover, a flathead and phillips screw driver, a small saw, a stainless steel file, fork, scraper, and tweezers. Good lord.

What would be cool for your car’s glove compartment or bike backpack, I wouldn’t recommend trying to sneak this through airport security. Buy one now for only $12.

Now here’s a spy pen you can be proud of, the Pegasus PJ-003 Spy Pen comes with four gig of onboard memory and the capacity to take VGA video (that’s 640X480 for those of you who don’t follow resolution charts) all for $99.99.

But here’s the kicker–Amazon’s offering them up unusually cheap, in fact, about forty percent off. They’re currently available for $59.99.

The device is selling like figurative hotcakes, currently ranked number one on the Electronics Movers and Shakers chart, or the Amazon chart that shows the highest jumps in rank according to sales. I’ve never been so clear on what exactly makes these things so popular–a portable video camera that looks like a pen? Does anyone really need to take surreptitious video or is this one just for the stalkers?

So if you’ve been looking for a nice, surreptitous way to take video just about anywhere, the Pegasus PJ-003 should be about what you need. Oh, and if you can answer the above question, I’d definitely appreciate it, so hit the comments section, huh?
