On May 2nd, HP will hold a launch party for the Veer, their 2.6-inch touchscreen phone. It’s not clear who the event is intended for, but one reader of Precentral signed up and was prompted with a message to bring along “ID badge or an AT&T/Best Buy Business card” to get in.

While we’re not sure when the Veer will actually launch, it’s probably safe to assume that May 2nd is just a launch event, and the phone’s retail availability – price still unknown – will come sometime shortly after.

The Veer, in case you forget, sports a 2.6-inch 300×400 touchscreen, an 800mhz Qualcomm MSM7230 processor, 5 hour talk time and full slide out QWERTY keyboard.

Pining for an inside look at HP’s webOS Think Beyond Event that transpired yesterday? Well, you’re in luck, because HP posted the entire unveiling of the Touchpad, Veer and Pre 3 on YouTube, albeit in 360p and for some reason in black and white. In fact, it looks like they had an intern upload this…err, scratch that. Make that a monkey, since there is some sort of loading graphic staining the screen. No doubt it’s from some other web video tool. No bueno HP, no bueno. If you skip to 11 minutes into the video you’ll see the Veer unveiled, which receives no hand clapping unlike Apple’s product launches. It’s all a bit sad. Enjoy.

Yesterday, HP sent a wave through the technology community by launching an all new Pre, the Pre 3 and a tablet called the Touchpad. What we didn’t report on at the time was the launch of a brand new phone that looks like the Pre, but sports a smaller form factor. It’s called the Veer.

Yup, it’s super pocket friendly. What you’re looking at is a 2.6-inch 320×400 resolution touchscreen with 18-bit color support. Hidden beneath it is a full slide out QWERTY keyboard. It support MS Exchange, has a 5 megapixel camera, speakerphone, accelerometer, ambient light and proximity sensor. There is WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and WiFi Hotspot mode. There is a-GPS, 8GB of storage and a 910 mAh battery that is said to provide up to 5 hours of talk time or 300 hours of standby time. Under the hood is the Qualcomm MSM7230 at 800Mhz, which is a bit slower than the Pre 3, but it’s a smaller, less powerful and cheaper phone, so we’ll take it. It measures 2.15″ x 3.31″ x .59″ (WxHxT) and weighs 3.63oz. Lastly, it supports quad band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) and HSDPA connectivity.

Like the Pre 3 it will launch with WebOS 2.2, at least that’s what we’re hearing, but we don’t know where, when (sometime this Spring) and how much it will cost when it launches later this year.

In addition to launching the Touchpad, HP also unveiled an all new Pre, the Pre3 to be exact. It’s form factor is virtually identical, at least at a glance, to the previous Pres, but it’s what doesn’t meet the eye that has changed.

Under the hood is a 1.4Ghz Qualcomm MSM 8×55 CPU, WiFi a/b/g/n connectivity, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a-GPS, EVDO-A support and a 1230 mAh battery. The display has been beefed up to 3.6-inches with a 800×480 resolution and so has the camera, which is now 5 meagpixels with an LED flash. And of course its stuffed with Touchstone tech, which can not only charge the device “wirelessly”, but can share info by physically tapping it together with another Touchstone device, such as the Touchpad.

You’ll get to choose from an 8GB and 16GB version when it arrives this summer. Sorry, no price or carrier mentioned.

Update: HP just announced the HP Touchpad, the would be iPad killer.

These may look like photos of a delicious tablet, but they’re only renders. HP and Palm got together to build the Topaz webOS tablet, and someone working for them was kind enough to leak these images for the rest of the world. It’s just the way things work.

Topaz is the 9-inch model, while a smaller, 7-inch tablet was baptized Opal. They’re both adhering to a push for a no-button design, they have a front-facing camera, micro-USB port (I hate these) and a three-speaker layout that’s reminiscent of the Vizio tablet. Two speakers on the left side and one on the right, giving stereo audio in both landscape and portrait mode.

Both tablets should start shipping somewhere around September, with versions for WiFi only, 3G from AT&T, and Verizon LTE.

With HP’s recent acquisition of Palm, rumors began flying that the HP Slate, the company’s anticipated tablet, was being delayed and retooled to run on webOS instead of Windows 7. This rumor was fueled by reports that Windows 7 was not fit for a tablet. (Battery life was unacceptable, primarily.) But it seems that the VP of HP Taiwan has managed to confirm both — that HP is working on devices running on webOS, and that the Slate is going to be released before the fiscal year is over (October). So will it run Windows 7? webOS? They won’t tell. But if they actually are going to release this thing in 2010, we’ll have to find out sometime this summer.

Holy crap! HP has bought Palm for $1.2 billion, which equates to $5.70 per share of Palm common stock. The deal has been approved by both boards and the deal will officially close during HP’s third fiscal quarter ending July 31, 2010. This gives HP a much stronger position in terms of Apple’s mobile devices, especially seeing as Windows 7 is probably not the best OS for a tablet computer, something HP is due to launch very soon. Jon Rubinstein will remain with the company.

PALO ALTO, Calif. & SUNNYVALE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–HP (NYSE: HPQ – News) and Palm, Inc. (NASDAQ: PALM – News) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which HP will purchase Palm, a provider of smartphones powered by the Palm webOS mobile operating system, at a price of $5.70 per share of Palm common stock in cash or an enterprise value of approximately $1.2 billion. The transaction has been approved by the HP and Palm boards of directors.

The combination of HP’s global scale and financial strength with Palm’s unparalleled webOS platform will enhance HP’s ability to participate more aggressively in the fast-growing, highly profitable smartphone and connected mobile device markets. Palm’s unique webOS will allow HP to take advantage of features such as true multitasking and always up-to-date information sharing across applications.

“Palm’s innovative operating system provides an ideal platform to expand HP’s mobility strategy and create a unique HP experience spanning multiple mobile connected devices,” said Todd Bradley, executive vice president, Personal Systems Group, HP. “And, Palm possesses significant IP assets and has a highly skilled team. The smartphone market is large, profitable and rapidly growing, and companies that can provide an integrated device and experience command a higher share. Advances in mobility are offering significant opportunities, and HP intends to be a leader in this market.”

“We’re thrilled by HP’s vote of confidence in Palm’s technological leadership, which delivered Palm webOS and iconic products such as the Palm Pre. HP’s longstanding culture of innovation, scale and global operating resources make it the perfect partner to rapidly accelerate the growth of webOS,” said Jon Rubinstein, chairman and chief executive officer, Palm. “We look forward to working with HP to continue to deliver industry-leading mobile experiences to our customers and business partners.”

Under the terms of the merger agreement, Palm stockholders will receive $5.70 in cash for each share of Palm common stock that they hold at the closing of the merger. The merger consideration takes into account the updated guidance and other financial information being released by Palm this afternoon. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including the receipt of domestic and foreign regulatory approvals and the approval of Palm’s stockholders. The transaction is expected to close during HP’s third fiscal quarter ending July 31, 2010.

Palm’s current chairman and CEO, Jon Rubinstein, is expected to remain with the company.

There’s a small, but vocal, contingent of ex-Palm OS users who have switched over to the iPhone but crave their old Palm apps. Their cries have finally been answered by the people at StyleTap, who have just released an emulator program for the Palm OS up to version 5.2. Be warned, however; your phone will need to be jailbroken for it to install. Once you do that, though, you’ll get support for native ARM apps, virtual memory cards, TCP/IP connectivity, audio recording/playback, and more.

The app is available for $49.99 from StyleTap — this thing won’t be on the App Store anytime soon.

Here’s a little bit more AT&T news for you: the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi will be coming to the carrier sometime soon – they haven’t announced an official launch date as of yet. Pricing wise were looking at $149.99 and $49.99 after a 2-year control signing and $100 mail-in-rebate, respectively. For specs we can pretty much expect the same as found on other carriers, with 16GB of storage on the Pre and 8GB on the Pixi. And of course both phones will have access to AT&T 20,000+ WiFi hotspots completely free of charge.

Full press release after the ‘leap’

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 22, 2010 – AT&T’s 80 million customers will soon have a new choice for staying connected in their fast-paced lives — the Palm® webOS™ platform. Palm, Inc. (NASDAQ: PALM) today announced that the Palm Pre™ Plus and Palm Pixi™ Plus phones will be available on the nation’s fastest 3G network for $149.99 and $49.99, respectively, with a two-year service agreement and after a $100 mail-in rebate.

“AT&T and Palm have a history of smartphone leadership, and today’s announcement is a significant milestone for us,” said Jon Rubinstein, Palm chairman and chief executive officer. “With Palm webOS phones coming to AT&T, Palm can help most anyone in the United States stay connected so they never miss a thing.”

Pre Plus and Pixi Plus will be featured in Palm’s booth (No. 7053) at CTIA Wireless, which runs March 23-25 in Las Vegas.

The keyboard makes for quick and easy typing, while the unique gesture area provides a sleek look and intuitive navigation. Customers also get 16GB(1) of storage (~15GB user available) for applications and media. Pre Plus comes with the Palm Touchstone™ Back Cover, so it’s compatible out of the box with the revolutionary inductive Touchstone Charging Dock (sold separately).

As Palm’s thinnest phone to date, Pixi Plus fits easily in your hand or pocket and offers a host of powerful features, including Wi-Fi. It’s great for social communicators and first-time smartphone buyers who want an affordable and customizable phone with a full QWERTY keyboard instantly accessible for messaging and web content.
“We’re offering our customers even greater choice by adding Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus to the nation’s best smartphone portfolio,” said Jeff Bradley, senior vice president, Devices, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “Palm webOS plus included access to the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network and the ability to talk and surf the web at the same time is a powerful combination.”

Pre Plus and Pixi Plus showcase the defining features of Palm webOS, including the ability to run multiple applications simultaneously and easily move between them; the power of Palm Synergy™, which brings customers’ information from the many places it resides into a single, more comprehensive view; unobtrusive notifications; and universal search.(2) Palm webOS also has a unique model of over-the-air software updates that delivers new features and performance improvements directly to a user’s phone. Past updates have included support for 3D games and video recording allowing webOS customers to use their phones in fun, new ways.

It’s ‘happy, happy, joy, joy’ time for Palm PRE users. In the waking hours of today they issued WebOS 1.2.1. The 38MB update fixes syncing with iTunes as well as a bug that prevented some 2007 Exchange users from syncing with their server.

Unfortunately, this is just the beginning of Apple and Palm’s cat and mouse game. Apple will issue yet another update to their iTunes application and once again break syncing with non-Apple devices. Sure, WebOS users might get a month or two out of the latest update, but until Apple concedes, or Palm builds a better resolution you’re just gonna have to deal.

Read
