If you happen to own one of five kinds of Nokia phone–an E72, E71x, 5800, N97, and N97 mini phones–and you’re fond of Netflix, then I’ve got some great news for you.

Netflix, just two days ago, launched a new kind of app exclusively for those five phones, that will allow you to remotely modify your queue, browse their library for possible additions to that queue, and even watch previews of upcoming releases.

It’s available on the Ovi Store, under entertainment.

About the only people saddened by this news is everybody at Blockbuster Online, who doesn’t have anything even remotely like this and is still jumping for joy over their new “download movies to SD card” system. This would admittedly be awesome except the downloaded movies will only play on a television, but that’s beside the point.

If you’ve got Netflix and Nokia, folks, you might as well get the app.

I’d love to say I could say ‘I told you so’ but since I never once wrote about the inevitable demise of Nokia’s N-Gage gaming platform on this blog I really can’t. But alas, the gaming unit has met its end. The news actually comes as no surprise. First it was all about the N-Gage phone, which at best was like talking into a stack of stale hard tacos. That hardware obviously failed. Then Nokia had an epiphany and decided to make N-Gage less about hardware and more about an app store for a select set of Nokia handsets – they had to have the computing power. Course, then the iPhone came along and pretty much upstaged anything Nokia had done from a gaming stand point for mobile handsets.

But like all things Nokia, the N-Gage store will stay open until September 2010, with service running through the end of next year. Then Nokia will just offer all its gaming content through their Ovi store, So to reiterate, Nokia ain’t getting out of the gaming biz, they’re just simply rebranding it.

You might have read my review of the N97 – I didn’t like it. Sure, it has a touchscreen and full QWERTY keyboard, but at the end of the day they were both relatively useless – ok that’s unfair, the touchscreen was useless.

But not so with the N900. I’m at CTIA and got a hands on with the device. The OS build still wasn’t finished so a few things were a bit jittery and slow, but for the most part I’m really digging the Maemo OS. It’s much slicker and has a Web 2.0 feel to it, unlike Symbian. The UI is intuitive and for those of you that are looking for a multitasking operating system with an iPhone like skin here it is. The N900 uses a resistive touchscreen, so don’t expect multigesture controls, but you you can zoom in by drawing circles on the screen and flick through contacts, though it still isn’t quite as reactive as the highly touted iPhone. Checkout the video walk through (there’s 2 of them, ones a bit out of focus). It’s a bit long and drawn out, but it should provide you with a good sense of what the N900 has to offer.

Nokia officially announced the slimmed down version of their N97, the Mini N97. The cut backs aren’t drastic as this version features a 3.2-inch versus a 3.5-inch touchscreen, lacks a d-pad and a slightly smaller footprint. Nokia also says they’ve injected this version with “flick-scrolling”….

Nokia officially unveiled the lurid (kidding) details of their N900 “mobile computer” today. That’s right, they’re calling it a computer, not a phone. Thanks to Mobile-review and Mobile Crunch we’ve already been familiarized with its specs, but since we’ve got them on the official, let’s rehash them, shall we?

We’re looking at a 3.5-inch 800×400 touchscreen, GPS with OVI maps, 5 megapixel camera with auto focus and dual LED flash, TV out, music player (compatible with wav, .mp3, .AAC, .eAAC, .wma, .m4a), FM transmitter, DLNA compatible, full QWERTY keyboard, 32GB of storage, microSD card slot, Bluetooth, 1320mAh battery, 3.5mm headphone jack and a TI OMAP 3430: ARM Cortex-A8 600 MHz processor. OS wise it will be running Maemo, a Linux based system and include support for a Mozilla based web browser as well as Adobe Flash.

According to Nokia they will put this bad boy on sale in the EU for €500 ($718 US) sometime in October. That’s a shit load of money, but that’s before any carrier subsidies or discounts.

A few weeks, perhaps even almost a few months ago, Nokia introduced their flagship handset, the Nokia N97. I’m not a die hard Nokia fan, but what little I did see about the N97 before the official announcement had me relatively excited, and some what happy that the Finish phone company was truly taking the touchscreen smartphone game seriously. That is until I actually played with it. After spending some weeks with the N97 it’s most certainly a decent device, but it’s far from a game changer for the industry or the Nokia brand.

So at this point everyone and their mother knows that Apple has set the touchscreen smartphone bar with the iPhone. While I want to resist the comparison, you know there is just no freaking way.

Out of the box it’s very apparent just how chunky the N97. I don’t wear emo skinny jeans and this handset is very snug in my pocket. So much so in fact that I opted to not carry it with me when I went out to dinner and a few drinks. And believe me, I’m the first to take out the latest kit in the hopes of garnering a comment and striking up a gadget conversation.

But, the N97’s size is within reason. Hidden beneath its touchscreen is a QWERTY keyboard. It took some getting use to the sliding/flipping the screen up to reveal the keypad as the hinge is angled and requires one smooth motion. Fear not, it will only take you a day or two to get acclimated. But the hinge is the least of the keyboard’s problems. In Nokia’s infinite amount of wisdom they placed the d-pad on the left of the keyboard. Last time I checked the majority of humans are right handed, but perhaps that statistic has changed and Nokia is on to something. Additionally, the space bar is off center and shrunken to an almost useless size. Despite those issues the keys are responsive, but after using the iPhone’s touchscreen to hammer out emails I don’t think I can ever go back. For those of you looking for a tactile response the N97 can surely deliver it.

And speaking of tactile, and something the iPhone sorely lacks, is the haptic feedback screen. It’s probably a slight battery eater, but N97 can vibrate to indicate when you’ve pressed an on screen key. This is a feature I don’t mind, but most certainly don’t need and is probably something you can find on other Nokia touchscreen phones running the Symbian OS (I think).

The Nokia N97 comes installed with Symbian 60. The OS is widely used by millions of people and now I know why misery loves company. In order to change, oh say a ringtone setting, you’ll have to navigate and scroll through an endless array of menus. Just changing a network setting requires a degree in rocket science, or someone like me, whose never spent a ton of time with the Symbian OS, would be led to believe.

Touchscreen wise the N97 is more flash than function. It lacks any multitouch abilities so any functions that would have been performed using a directional pad are just sped up in their execution, not enhanced. An unfamiliar Symbian user like me even found it challenging to dial a phone number that wasn’t stored in the the phone’s contact list and the home’s screen widget selection, although useful – there are things like Facebook and Weather – seemed to have a hard time staying logged in or pulling down the correct data.

The saving grace of the N97 is in its optics. On the back of the phone is a 5 megapixel sensor, while the screen side includes a low rez camera for video conferencing calls and the occasional but grainy self portrait photo. Snapping night photos, although not standalone camera quality, still sufficed thanks to the built-in LED flash. The video setting, while decent, is a bit muddled by noise and has a hard time producing crystal clear sound, something that can be easily over looked in favor of the still picture quality.

Nokia N97 Sample Pic

iPhone 3GS Sample Pic

Battery wise the N97 is solid and for most users they should be able to get a few days out of the device on a single charge. Other features that are worth noting is the dedicated camera button – it activates the shutter and turns the camera on in those celebrity run in moments – and the dedicated home key.

So by now you can tell I’m not a huge fan of Nokia’s N97. For a company of such size and prowess I really did expect more and perhaps that best explains my dismay with the handset. I’m still and will forever be a fan of Nokia as I believe they make solid, long lasting phones but their attempt at a touch centric device is more in vein and playing catch up with the market. They’ve most certainly nailed it from an optic’s perspective but the core phone features, aside from battery life, fall short.

Pro:

Full QWERTY keyboard

Bright screen

Fantastic 5 megapixel camera

In a surprise move, without much hype before the announcement this morning, Nokia entered the Netbook market. Called the Booklet 3G, the 10.1-inch machine is powered by an Intel Atom processor, and includes 3G connectivity and hot-swappable SIM cards which should allow you to surf the net using the same plan as your mobile. They’ve also included A-GPS with a copy of Ovi Maps for firing up a location based map on the fly, a 12-hour battery life, WiFi, an HDMI output, webcam, SD card reader and Bluetooth. Form factor wise were looking at what appears to an Apple inspired 2.7lb aluminum body that measures just .78-inches thick. There’s no official word on a price or launch date, but I’d expect it well in time for holiday shopping.
