If you happen to own one of five kinds of Nokia phone–an E72, E71x, 5800, N97, and N97 mini phones–and you’re fond of Netflix, then I’ve got some great news for you.

Netflix, just two days ago, launched a new kind of app exclusively for those five phones, that will allow you to remotely modify your queue, browse their library for possible additions to that queue, and even watch previews of upcoming releases.

It’s available on the Ovi Store, under entertainment.

About the only people saddened by this news is everybody at Blockbuster Online, who doesn’t have anything even remotely like this and is still jumping for joy over their new “download movies to SD card” system. This would admittedly be awesome except the downloaded movies will only play on a television, but that’s beside the point.

If you’ve got Netflix and Nokia, folks, you might as well get the app.

Just in time for the holidays, Roku has announced an all new Roku Player…sort of. Actually, the HD-XR model just adds a USB port (not enabled) and support for 802.11n to the HD version of the box. You can grab one now for $129.99 or opt for the now discounted SD version for $79.99. For some the $30 for the HD-XR version might not be worth it, but for those streaming users that want to move their box further from their router it might make sense, and who knows, maybe that currently disabled USB port will actually facilitate not only local play from an attached hard drive but enable it to be a NAS.

Remember how Microsoft said they had an exclusive deal with Netflix to stream their movies to their Xbox 360? Wrongzo my friend! Sony has just inked a deal with the DVD rental company that will bring the service to over 9 million PS3 owners in the US sometime next month.

I can’t find the source, but Netflix obtained millions (more than 1 less than 3) of users as a result of signing a deal with Microsoft’s gaming unit and should probably expect the same once the service goes live on the Playstation. At a minimum of $8.99 a month (that’s the plan needed to stream movies) I’d expect Netflix’s stock to surge tomorrow.

Oddly enough, it doesn’t look like the Netflix application for the PS3 will initially be offered in their marketplace – you’ll need to reserve a Netflix Instant Streaming disc here.

On a random note, Sony has a deal with Starz. I wonder if this will cause any conflicts; as in will we see certain movies streaming on the PS3 but not on the Xbox 360?

COMING SOON: NETFLIX MEMBERS CAN INSTANTLY WATCH MOVIES AND TV EPISODES STREAMED TO TVs VIA THE PLAYSTATION®3 COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM

With Movies Streamed Instantly from Netflix, Blu-ray/DVD Playback and Downloadable Videos via the PlayStation®Network, the PlayStation 3 System Offers The Industry’s Most Comprehensive Options for Watching Movies and TV Shows

FOSTER CITY and LOS GATOS, Calif., October 26, 2009 – Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) and Netflix, Inc. [Nasdaq: NFLX] today announced that they are joining forces to make thousands of movies and TV episodes from Netflix available to be streamed instantly to TVs via the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. Netflix expects to begin streaming via the PS3 system next month at no additional cost to Netflix members in the United States who have a PS3 system.

Today’s announcement pairs two of the most popular and fastest growing home entertainment brands in the U.S. The PS3 system’s installed base has reached close to 9 million units in the United States, and Netflix recently reported 11.1 million U.S. subscribers as of September 30.

The partnership further solidifies the PS3 system as the most complete home entertainment hub on the market today, enabling consumers to play high-definition games, watch Blu-ray movies, listen to music, view photos, browse the Internet, and download content from PlayStation®Network − from exclusive games to blockbuster movies and popular TV shows. PS3 system owners will soon enjoy an unparalleled experience watching their favorite movies and TV shows streamed instantly from Netflix, downloading from the PlayStation Network or watching Blu-ray/DVD media. The Netflix offering expands on the entertainment experience delivered to PS3 system owners via PlayStation Network.

For only $8.99 a month, Netflix members can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streamed to their TVs and computers via Netflix ready devices such as the PS3 system and can receive unlimited DVDs delivered quickly to their homes.

“The PlayStation 3 system has always been about more than just gaming, and it will soon be the only platform in the industry to offer consumers such a variety of convenient options for enjoying movies and TV shows,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. “Whether you want to watch content on Blu-ray disc and DVD, download it from the PlayStation Network’s video delivery service, or stream videos instantly from Netflix, the PS3 system is the only solution that offers it all.”

“As instantly watching movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix becomes an increasingly popular way to enjoy the Netflix service, our goal is to rapidly expand the devices that stream to our members,” said Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings. “As a leading game console and Blu-ray disc player, bringing Netflix to the PS3 system is a real win for both Netflix members and PS3 system owners.”

Initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members. The free instant streaming disc leverages Blu-ray’s BD-Live™ technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Netflix members simply slide the disc into their PS3 systems to reveal movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly. These titles are conveniently organized into a variety of categories based on members’ personal preferences, popular genres, new arrivals and members’ individual instant Queues. Members can use the Netflix Web site or navigate directly on their PS3 systems to add movies and TV shows to their Queues. With the PS3 system’s Wireless Controller, members can choose a movie to watch from their instant Queues or just play directly from any of the lists. They also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream via the Wireless Controller.

Netflix members and PS3 system owners can now reserve a free instant streaming disc for PS3 systems by going to www.netflix.com/ps3. Upon availability, the instant streaming disc will be delivered for free by first-class mail, generally one business day after members request it.

About Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc.

Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. continues to redefine the entertainment lifestyle with its PlayStation® and PS one® game consoles, the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, the ground-breaking PlayStation®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system and its digital services which include the PlayStation®Network and the PlayStation®Store.

The Netflix account management app is pretty cool on the iPhone. But it would be a lot cooler if you could stream movies straight out your queue. According to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings it will happen at some point. Making it seem like it’s not really one of his priorities he expressed the following:

It’s something that’s likely to come over time. But nothing in the short term. (With) movie watching, we are not focused on mobile yet, but (instead) on the TV, on Blu-ray and on the video game consoles. We will get to mobile eventually, including the iPhone.

We’ve seen Sirius XM make it happen and it only makes sense for Netflix to go that route so hopefully Mr. Hastings can make time to work it out.

If there’s one thing I love–positively LOVE!–about gadgets, it’s their great potential to make my life better, easier, and more entertaining. And now that I’ve found a possible way to shatter a cable bill by the judicious use of Netflix, DSL and a Roku video device, I’m more inclined to express my love of gadgetry.

Here’s the rundown: a DSL subscription can run about twenty three bucks a month, depending on where you live and what plans are available. A subscription to Netflix that includes unlimited downloads starts at a measly nine bucks. The Roku? Another ninety nine.

So for a hundred bucks to open and thirty two bucks a month, I can essentially get access to a wide-open commercial free library of movies and television shows. Why would I get cable when this is a possibility?

And now, thanks to this coalition of gadgets, you can overthrow the cable company. Sounds like a plan to me.

Did we know this was coming? Not that you can’t view Netflix on myriad of other devices and HDTV’s, but now they have provided Microsoft with exclusive console rights to their streaming service on the Xbox 360. And how fitting that this news should arrive on the same day that the Xbox Live update enhances the NetFlix portion of service. Here’s some words from someone more important than me:

Netflix Partnership

This exclusive partnership offers you the ability to instantly stream movies and TV episodes from Netflix to the television via Xbox 360. Xbox 360 will be the only game console to offer this movie-watching experience, available to Xbox LIVE Gold members who are also Netflix unlimited plan subscribers**, at no additional cost.

From the Netflix Web site, simply add movies and TV episodes to your instant Queue, which will appear automatically on the TV screen via Xbox 360. Once selected, movies will begin playing in as little as 30 seconds. In addition to instantly streaming Netflix movies to the TV, Xbox LIVE Gold members can browse and rate movies, fast-forward, pause and rewind, all using either their Xbox 360 Controller or Universal remote.

I’m gonna go and download that update right now. I have no direct feelings in regards to this corporate merger, but I will say that I love instant streaming. FYI, your queue maxes out at 500 movies just so you know.

According to an industry source familiar with Netflix’s future plans, the DVD rental company will be bringing their streaming service to an iPhone near you (and the Nintendo Wii). Of course, this news wasn’t a question of if, but when as Netflix opened up their API to any willing participant and even hinted at the development of such an app.

How soon the app will debut in the iTunes app store is anyone’s guess, but given Netflix’s goal of world dominance in not only the DVD rental space, but the media streaming arena I’d guess that it will be free for all to download. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that the service will work over AT&T’s 3G connection, since previous applications that offer streaming media have been limited to a WiFi only connection.

On August 11th, Netflix subscribers with an Xbox and Xbox Live account will enjoy a relatively significant upgrade allowing them to manage their instant queue without leaving their couch. We’ve already played with the update and like what we see.

Although many of Netflix’s streaming movies and TV shows are old or somewhat ‘b movie quality’, they still offer the most comprehensive selection of streaming media at the lowest price; $8.99.

So if there was ever another reason to get an iPhone, here it is.

Last night I scored the most recent Xbox Live update. It includes a variety of improvement and tweaks, but there are really only two that are worth mentioning. The first is the Netflix update. Not only does it include Instant Queue management, but the ability to view select movies in ‘party mode’, which has a sort of Mystery Theatre 3000 like feel too it. The other big update, or should I said addition, is the avatar marketplace, which includes animated objects as well as game inspired clothing, such as Monkey Island and Halo. For a complete walk through of each check the videos below. They were shoot with a camcorder so pardon the image and audio quality. The official and public Xbox Live update will arrive August 11th.

I love it. At some point in the next few years the line between TV and Internet machine will be significantly blurred. Adding to the haziness today is Sony. They’ve announced that their Internet Video-capable BRAVIA TVs and those with the Internet Video Link module will be able to stream Netflix’s 12,000+ movies and TV shows. Like the current Xbox system as well as the Roku player, users will need to create their Instant Queue using a computer, but since the Xbox is set to release an update to their Netflix player that allows users to add movies on the fly, what’s to stop Sony from adding the very same feature in the future, aside from the lack of keyboard. Expect the Netflix feature to hit a Sony TV near you this fall and keep your fingers crossed for some PS3 integration.

Release after the ‘leap’

LOS GATOS, Calif., July 9, 2009 – Netflix, Inc., (Nasdaq: NFLX) the world’s largest online movie rental service, today announced a partnership with Sony Electronics that will enable Netflix subscribers to instantly watch movies streamed from Netflix on Sony’s BRAVIA Internet Video-capable HDTVs and on previous BRAVIA models compatible with Sony’s BRAVIA Internet video link module.
In the fall, Netflix members on an unlimited plan can use the Sony BRAVIA Internet Video-capable HDTVs to instantly watch more than 12,000 movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix.

Sony is the latest consumer electronics (CE) company to partner with Netflix. Other CE companies partnering with Netflix are Microsoft (with the Xbox360), LG Electronics, Roku, Samsung, TiVo and VIZIO.

Netflix members pay as little as $8.99 a month for unlimited streaming from a library of more than 12,000 choices and unlimited DVDs by mail from a library of more than 100,000 DVD titles in more than 200 genres.

“Sony has been a world leader in consumer electronics for decades,” said Netflix Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings. “We are proud to include Sony Electronics among our CE partners who continue to provide new and exciting ways for Netflix members to instantly watch movies and TV episodes in their living rooms on their TVs.”

E3 officially starts tomorrow and hopefully we’ll be on hand for one of the days. But like all good events, the big boys have already started to roll out some juicy news. Microsoft announced today that they’re upgrading the Xbox’s video capabilities.

First up, they’re changing the name of their video store to the ‘Zune Store’. Clearly they’re trying to push the whole cohesive media thing to be more like Apple, and they probably see their video game arm as a big differentiator. Additionally, 1080p movies will now be instant on, meaning as soon as you buy it you can begin to watch instead of waiting for it to download locally on your 360.

But on to more important news. Netflix subscribers will no longer need a computer to add movies to their queue. Nope, you’ll be able to add them directly on your Xbox. I’d recommend picking up a keyboard or Microsoft’s messenger kit, otherwise you might be there all day punching in titles. I’m not sure when the update will roll out, but let’s hope its soon.

Taking one look at the NetFlix Blog and it’s easy to tell how pissed people are about the recent announcement to upcharge the customers renting Blu ray movies. In a time where every dollar counts, people are only seeing this as a greedy move by NetFlix. While we know that NetFlix mass produces the normal DVD’s, I have yet to see a copied Blu Ray disc. This probably means that NetFlix has thrown down a lot more money to buy “more of the more” expensive disc to meet the demands. People may also not figure in all the endless movies they can watch via computer or Xbox and all the new sources that NetFlix is bringing the streaming option to. That in addition to what I imagine to be extremely high server costs, NetFlix is still a great service. Below are some good rants from the blog.

Anonymous said…
Show me the numbers. I said it once I’ll say it again. Show me how you loose money if you don’t charge more for Blu-Ray.

Will my extra money GUARANTEE that I wont wait days/weeks for a New Release blue-ray? (like I do now?)

You mention the 30% more for blue ray disks, that make up, what…..5% of your library? How about the 1.99 bin DVD’s in Netflix’s library?

Gary Jr. said…

It is quite ridiculous to increase blu ray access when there aren’t enough blu ray titles to rent out. Very disappointed to see such an increase so quickly. I’ve opted to remove my blu ray service and I’m pretty sure many others will as well.

Anonymous said…
I am a stalwart Netflix fan, but this feels distinctly like BAIT-AND-SWITCH.

I only watch DVDs through Netflix and I recently spent $200 on a Blu-Ray player. The reason I did so, is because I did the math and decided that the cost of the machine, plus the extra $12 per year, was worth it. Now, suddenly it’s an extra $48 per year!

I’m sorry, but I don’t believe that Netflix was blindsided by “rising costs.” This feels decidedly like Bait-and-Switch, Netflix. And after already spending my money on that Blu-Ray player, I just have to sit here and take it like the fool I am.

Guess it happens with every company, sooner of later. But I no longer trust Netlfix one iota.

As a 10-year-long Netflix customer, this is the first major aggravation I have experienced from them. I was irked by the initial $1 blu-ray surcharge, but the new one is simply a bald profit grab. The math doesn’t support the “blu-ray is more expensive than DVD” argument. Netflix claims to have 60,000 titles available, but only 1,300 blu-rays. That represents only 2.2% of their inventory. However, under the new surcharge, I will be billed $5 on top of my $18 basic plan, or an increase of 28%, over ten times Netflix’s claimed increase in overhead. And, let’s face it, Neflix doesn’t buy these discs retail. They no doubt negotiate very attractive discounts with the studios. So it’s good bye to blu-ray on Netflix for me.

While more and more BlockBuster and Hollywood Videos crumble under that weight of the almighty NetFlix, the beast is still not satisfied. I literally just got an email from NetFlix saying that on April 27th they will be increasing Blu Ray rates from $1 to $3 dollars a month! Six months or so ago, I got an email saying that since Blu Ray movies are more pricey to purchase that the customer should pay one dollar more a month for access. That’s fine, I agree with that, but now a bump to $3 a month! That’s too much! Is NetFlix just greedy or is this a legitimate increase? Lame I say.

Dear Jeff,

You are receiving this email because you added unlimited Blu-ray access to your account for $1 a month. The number of Blu-ray titles has increased significantly and will continue to do so. As we buy more, you are able to choose from a rapidly expanding selection of Blu-ray titles. And as you’ve probably heard, Blu-ray discs are substantially more expensive than standard definition DVDs.

As a result, the monthly charge for Blu-ray access is increasing for most plans and will now vary by plan. The charge for monthly Blu-ray access on your 2 DVDs at-a-time (Unlimited) plan will increase from $1 a month to $3 a month. The price of your 2 DVDs at-a-time (Unlimited) plan is not changing and remains at $13.99 a month.

The new charge for Blu-ray access will be automatically added to your next billing statement on or after April 27, 2009 and will be referenced in your Membership Terms and Details.

If you wish to continue unlimited Blu-ray access for $3 a month, you don’t need to do anything. If not, you can remove Blu-ray access anytime by visiting Your Account.

If you have questions about this change or need any assistance, please call us anytime at 1-888-923-0898.

The consumer service description below suggests Netflix availability for the Nintendo Wii via a disc you pop in every time you want to view movies. The service would require you to buy a $9.99 streaming disc for operation and the Wii would need an internet connection. Given that over 750,000 Wii’s were sold just last month, this would be a great way to get Netflix up in people’s area’s. If this service comes to be, it will be another great reason to own a Wii. Poor, poor PS3, what will you ever do good these days?

Sometime in 2010 Netflix might roll out a ’streaming only’ plan according to its CEO, Reed Hastings. And given the popularity of the feature and Netflix’s desire (and the post office) to move away from the physical disc I wouldn’t be too surprised. Unfortunately, this might result in a premium price for the service and then of course you’ve still gotta battle your cable company over bandwidth costs and capping.

On another Netflix note, the company has formed partnerships with popular movie review sites that will enable its customers to add movies instantly to their queue without entering the Netflix interface.
