Today, Cloud Engines announced an updated version of their popular NAS networking device, the Pogoplug.  This version adds 4 USB ports to the mix, which means you can now share the content of even more hard drives or USB sticks over the Internet.

I’m about to write a review on the Seagate NAS that uses the Pogoplug software, and while it’s not bad it’s not stellar.  But from the sounds of it, Pogoplug might have updated some of the software, such as the ability to automatically sync your photos and other media with the NAS device.

Netgear, who I’ve long associated with routers and other networking products, has introduced a NAS enabled hard drive that should make sharing your social media all that much easier.

Called the Stora, the 1TB hard drive connects to your home’s Internet connection using its built-in Ethernet plug.  Once you’ve done that, any computer connected on the network can easily upload photos, videos and music to the hard drive.  If you want to share your photos, from say a Safari trip (I just got back from one) just upload the photos to the hard drive and instead of uploading them to a Flickr or Picasa, you can simply provide your friends with the www.MyStora.com URL, which allows them to access the drive’s contents.  Keep in mind you’ll have to designate the users, though.

Despite the fact that Apple has doubled the capacity of their Time Capsule hard drive to 2TB I still wouldn’t even usher it a glance let alone a consideration.  Sure, it does ‘wireless’ but so do a number of other NAS drives and at far less the cost.  And yes, you got me as far as aesthetics, but would I really care about aesthetics when the hard drive is gonna be tucked behind my Plasma squarely planted next to my home’s WiFi router, or in the case of the Time Capsule my modem?  Anyway, the 1TB is now $299, the 2TB $499 and if you really want all that Apple fanboy (disclaimer: I’m a Mac head) wireless fun with storage then I suggest you plunk down the $499 and get on with your backup.
