Motorola’s Droid Razr has proven to be a commercial success for Motorola and Verizon. One reason was because how stunningly thin the Razr is at just 7.1mm.

The Droid Razr Maxx isn’t thin. It’s the same phone, but 9mm thick. Why? That extra 1.9mm is all battery. And that makes all the difference in the world. Let’s see why.

Size

The Droid Razr is a better size than the iPhone 4S, both with a larger 4.3″ display and 2mm thinner. The Razr Maxx doesn’t have that second benefit, and is almost the exact same thickness as the 4S. The only difference then is the length and width, which the Maxx is certainly larger.

Whether or not a bigger phone is better is questionable, but the combination of a larger screen and thinner body certainly help. In this case however, the Razr Maxx, thanks to the overall design, doesn’t look or feel as small and comfortable as the iPhone 4S.

Winner: iPhone 4S, which is smaller and barely thicker, but a more comfortable and less dense device.

Appearance

Between the Droid Razr and iPhone 4S, it’s a tough call. Does the glass front and back sandwiching a metal band beat out hardened plastic and kevlar? Very tough, but once again the thinness set the Razr on a pedestal. With the Maxx, it’s the same general body but bigger. Fatter. It looks just as good from the front, but like a they say about mullets, it’s business in the front, party in the back. And this party’s got back.

Winner: iPhone 4S, thanks to stunning design and the Razr Maxx just being fat.

Display

Unlike some recent Android phones, the Droid Razr maxed out at 960×540, which is a slightly lower resolution than the iPhone 4S’, with 960×640. That means lower pixel density, so the screen won’t appear as clear as the iPhone. The Droid Razr Maxx has the same exact screen, a Super AMOLED display, which will provide better color and light contrast but is harder to see in bright conditions and isn’t quite as clear for reading text. The bigger problem isn’t the comparison between LCD and OLED, but the resolution itself. As a 4.3″ phone, it should have at least the same screen resolution, but it doesn’t.

Winner: iPhone 4S, with a smaller but higher-density display with a better screen resolution.

Operating System

This one should be a draw. After extensively testing Android 4.0 (full review coming soon), I like it. It’s a far better OS than Android 2.3, enough to make Apple concerned. But the Droid Razr Maxx doesn’t ship with Android 4.0. It ships with 2.3.5, and can be upgraded, but not the normal way. It’s not a simple “click to update” process, which for the vast majority of consumers is a problem. The 4.0 release is available for the Maxx, but isn’t officially supported by Motorola just yet. If it were, it would be a definite tie.

Winner: iPhone 4S, because the Maxx isn’t shipping with Android 4.0, and upgrading to the far better OS version isn’t a simple one-step process.

Processor

Processor speed and power is really based on how the software utilizes it, but based on speed alone the Droid Razr Maxx is a faster chip at 1.2GHz. It has the same ARM Cortex A9 build, which gives the Maxx 400MHz over the iPhone 4S. This makes the CPU alone potentially more powerful than the iPhone 4S’ A5, but we’ll have to see how well Android can make use of it.

What really wins this is the battery life. More powerful CPUs require more power, so it’s not always better for the phone as a whole. With the additional battery life, the CPU power almost doesn’t matter. If anything, I wish Motorola gave the CPU a speed boost in light of the bigger battery, but even without it, the processor is 50% faster than the iPhone.

Winner: Droid Razr Maxx, with a beefier CPU.

Storage

The iPhone 4S has three models: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. The Razr Maxx has 16GB of internal memory and is expandable with 32GB cards. With excellent pricing on flash storage these days, the Maxx is a better choice even if it doesn’t have as much space as the iPhone because SD cards can easily be swapped in and out.

Winner: Droid Razr Maxx, because flash memory is cheap and the Maxx has expandable memory.

Wireless Connectivity

The Razr Maxx has Verizon LTE while the iPhone 4S is still stuck on AT&T’s “4G”, which is anywhere from 5-10x slower. ’nuff said.

Winner: Droid Razr Maxx, because it has LTE.

Camera

We’re expecting the Droid Razr Maxx, but based on initial reports and reviews of the Droid Razr, the iPhone 4S has a stronger camera. We’ll have to test this for ourselves, to be sure, but by all accounts the iPhone 4S wins this bout. I’ve been using the iPhone 4S camera as well, and so far haven’t found a better smartphones camera that wasn’t a Nokia device. And even that’s a stretch.

Winner: iPhone 4S, because the Droid Razr camera isn’t as good and the Maxx shares the same camera.

Battery Life

The one major change to the Droid Razr to make it the Maxx is the battery. It takes up another 1.9mm of space alone, thickening the body from the previous industry-standard slim 7.1mm. And what did Motorola do with that space? Shove in a mind-boggling 3300mAh battery, which nearly doubles the iPhone’s 1420mAh battery. 21.5 hours of talk time? 6 hours of continuous video streaming over LTE? Nothing gets that close, except for tablets, and even they can’t claim such ridiculous battery live. Nothing can compete with that.

Winner: Droid Razr Maxx, with the largest smartphone battery ever used, almost doubling the iPhone 4S and nearly every other phone out today.

Carriers

The iPhone is available on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. Any phone named Droid is owned by Verizon, since they own the copyright, so the Droid Razr Maxx is also a Verizon exclusive. This has been a serious problem for non-Verizon users who wanted the Droid Razr, and it’ll happen again with the Maxx.

Winner: iPhone 4S, which is available on more carriers.

Price

The iPhone 4S is $200 base, and $300 for the 32GB model and $400 for 64GB. The Droid Razr Maxx ships for $300, which ships with less memory. With an extra $30 you can get a 32GB SD card and more closely match the iPhone, but even then it’s more expensive. Verizon also has the most expensive service pricing, compared to both Sprint and AT&T.

Winner: iPhone 4S, with more pricing options and better service pricing across multiple carriers.

Overall Winner

It may seem like a big gap, but it really isn’t. I added two points for the Droid Razr Maxx because it practically doubles the battery life of the iPhone 4S, and because battery life is an extremely important aspect of smartphones that most of us don’t put too much weight behind because battery life generally sucks. It doesn’t on the Maxx. Battery life makes the Maxx worthwhile.

What keeps the Razr Maxx from winning, or at least tying, is the lack of an easy Android 4.0 upgrade. If the Maxx shipped with Android 4.0, or if Motorola offered it as an easy upgrade, then it would be a no brainer for most users. The problem is only educated users will even know how to do it, and many won’t want to because the OS isn’t fully tested on the device.

The Maxx was also a perfect opportunity for Motorola to improve in a few key areas, including the CPU, but the company didn’t. They made the Maxx the exact same phone as the Droid Razr, just with a bigger battery. And there’s nothing wrong with that; the Razr is only a few months old and is still considered an excellent phone. However, every part was developed specifically for that phone. The Maxx wasn’t. It was developed as the smaller Droid Razr…with a bigger battery. That larger battery life isn’t taken full advantage of, and that’s a shame.

However, even though the Maxx doesn’t win this comparison, just remember that for some of us battery life is the most important thing. If the phone doesn’t last all day for you today, the Droid Razr Maxx is the best phone you can get. If only it wasn’t tied to Verizon, then I would consider switching over myself.

The Motorola Droid Razr is one of the few high-end smartphones that we haven’t yet had our hands on, but by all accounts it is one of the best phones available on Verizon. It also is the thinnest phone out (though the Huawei Ascend P1 S will soon take that spot), but there was one thing that made a lot of people wary about purchasing the Droid Razr: no removable battery. Apple may have that restriction with the iPhone, but at least there are Apple stores available all over the country. The Razr doesn’t have significantly better battery life than the competition, but the non-removable battery helped make it so thin.

Now Motorola wants to up the ante by saying “screw how thin the phone is, let’s boost battery life.” That’s where the Razr Maxx comes in, with 21 hours of battery life. What sort of battery life, I don’t know, but saying 21 hours period is an important metric nonetheless. The 9mm phone will be otherwise identical to the current Droid Razr, meaning the same processor, same LTE, same screen…everything but the battery life.

Will there be any interest for such a device? Absolutely. If the 21 hours of battery life is call time, or constant data usage, or almost anything but idle time, then that extra 1.9mm of thickness will make the phone far better to use, not just for day to day operation, but in the long run altogether. The biggest problem with today’s smartphones, in my opinion, is battery life. If Motorola has been able to solve that problem, not just before other smartphone makers but before Apple, then Google doesn’t just have a real racehorse. They have a rocket chariot.

I’ll get a hands-on of the Droid Razr Max on Wednesday morning, though perhaps earlier as well. Stay tuned for an update then.

Motorola just splashed down at CES 2012 with the announcement of the DROID 4, currently the world’s thinnest 4G enabled QWERTY smartphone – it measures .5-inches thick. But that isn’t all this powerhouse has to offer.

In addition to a massive 4-inch qHD screen (960×540), is a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM. There is also of course the aforementioned QWERTY keyboard that comes in a 5 row flavor, 16GB of built-in storage expandable by an additional 32GB thanks to the microSD card slot, 4G connectivity for up to 12mbps download speeds, Mobile Hotspot support for up to 8 devices and Android 2.3.5 (it will be upgradeable to Ice Cream Sandwich).

To ensure that the DROID 4 keeps on ticking, Motorola has slapped the outside of it with a water-repellent nanocoating, which was also found on the DROID RAZR. They’ve also made it business ready by including government-grade encryption (FIPS 140-2) for email, calendar and contacts.

In the accessories department, the DROID 4 will be compatible with the 10.1-inch Lapdock 100, 14-inch Lapdock 500 Pro with built-in webcam and Ethernet connection, HD Dock, HD Station and vehicle navigation mount.

No word on a price, but Verizon will begin to sell the phone before the month’s end. We’d expect to pay about $200 on contract during the initial launch.

Motorola wasn’t the first, but it did have one of the biggest comparable tablets to Apple’s iPad. The Motorola Xoom wasn’t a commercial or critical success, but after Motorola’s success with recent smartphones like the Droid Bionic and Droid Razer, the once nearly bankrupt company has proven that they can make a great handset. But have they managed to turn around their tablet business, especially after the company’s purchase by Android-maker Google?

Size

The iPad 2 is a 9.7″ tablet while the kicker for the Xyboard is that there are actually two models, the 8.2 and 10.1, referring to each devices screen sizes (8.2″ and 10.1″). That means, depending on what kind of user you are, you have an option between which screen size fits you better. The size comparison otherwise is so close, it’s not even funny. Take a look:

Xyboard 10.1: 10 x 6.9 x .35″, 1.32lbs
Xyboard 8.2: 8.5 x 5.5 x .35″, .86lbs
iPad 2: 9.5 x 7.3 x .34″, 1.33lbs

Both Xyboard models are smaller across and just a tad thicker, and both are lighter than the iPad 2. Plus, the fact that there’s an option in terms of size (that has no impact on the quality of the device; both Xyboards are identical in all ways except for screen size) makes Motorola’s latest the clear winner.

Winner: Motorola Xyboard

Appearance

While Motorola may have a real winner in terms of looks with the Droid Razr, the Xyboard looks like a kids tablet. From a distance it looks like the edges are rubber all around, and appears to be more squarish than round on the edges. This may fit the robotic vibe that Motorola has cone after, but it doesn’t look good.

Winner: iPad 2

Display

Both tablets use IPS displays, but the Xyboard (like most non-iPad tablets) is a widescreen display, which is better for viewing media. And as I continue to use tablets more and more, I find the size more convenient for a number of other uses, like holding when walking around or laying back. However, both Xyboards have 1280×800 display resolutions, which is higher density on both devices than the iPad 2. The Xyboard also has software called Intelligent Grip Suppression, which keeps digits hanging onto the ends of the glass off the touchscreen (so users don’t accidentally press). And the Xyboard works with a stylus (sold separately, and also by early reports mostly useless, but still better than none).

Winner: Xyboard

Operating System

We discussed this in the Transformer Prime vs. iPad 2 comparison: right now, iOS 5 kicks the crap out of Android…at least until Android 4.0 comes out. The Xyboard is expected to update to the latest version of Android, eventually…but if Motorola gave a date, or at least a time frame, I’d have made it a draw. Without that, the current OS is behind Apple’s offering and that may not change for awhile.

Winner: iOS 5 (iPad 2)

Processor

Unlike most Android tablets today, the Xyboard uses a Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 CPU. My experience is that TI’s CPUs are powerful, and they are especially great for longevity, but they don’t match the raw power of competitors like Qualcomm or, in this case, Apple. Early reports on how powerful the processor is is so-so. Sadly, we’re not likely to see a new set of powerful tablet processors until CES, and releasing at least a few months later.

Winner: iPad 2

Storage

Normally storage is a category that Apple never wins. They don’t allow the use of microSD cards. With the Xyboard, Motorola is taking the same route, and only offers two storage capacities for the Xyboard models, 16GB and 32GB. This means, for once, Apple wins in storage with 3 storage options (16GB, 32GB & 64GB). What is the world coming to?

Winner: iPad 2

Wireless Connectivity

The iPad 2 is available in three models: Wi-Fi only, AT&T 3G and Verizon 3G. The Xyboard comes in one basic model: Verizon 4G LTE. On the one hand, the iPad is more easily accessible and has more options, but on the other the Xyboard has access to the fastest and largest LTE network for the exact same price as the 3G iPad per month, and for an initially lower price (for the 8.2″ model). Tough call, but because of how widespread Verizon’s LTE network is, the Xyboard wins this round. Though the lack of a Wi-Fi model will hurt it later on.

Winner: Xyboard

Camera

I say it every time, and I’ll say it again: tablet cameras are a joke. Then again, as I use tablets more and more, I can see how increasingly significant they are.

The 8MP on the Xyboard, capable of 720p video, along with the 1.3MP front camera, blows the iPad 2′s lenses out of the water.

Winner: Xyboard

Price

Based on pricing schemes, there are six iPad 2 models: with 3G and without, at each storage capacity, going from $500-$829. The Xyboard, however, isn’t so comfortable on the wallet. It only has two models, period, that work over Verizon’s LTE network. There’s no Wi-Fi only model, so no matter what if you purchase the Xyboard, you are signing a two-year data contract for $30/month. They may have lower starting prices at $430 and $530 (for the 8.2 and 10.1 models, respectively), but remember, they’re contract only.

So, if you need a tablet with a data connection, the Xyboard is fine, but if you don’t want to plow down $720 over two years for limited data over Verizon’s LTE network, look away.

Winner: iPad 2

Overall

What’s great is when companies innovate and bring new and unique products to market. The Xyboard doesn’t fit into that category of products. It’s simply an updated Xoom (and is even named the Xoom 2 in Europe), which isn’t enough to stand up to the fiercest competitor in the tech space today. There are a few forgivable mistakes, like shipping without Android 4.0.

Others aren’t. Offering LTE models only means big-bucks for Verizon, but there are plenty of prospective tablet owners who don’t need an ever-present data connection. A large percentage of those people will end up using Wi-Fi for most of their tablet needs anyways. And, because it’s so easy to use data on a tablet (and nowadays even a smartphone), limited plans can very quickly lead to big bills just from streaming a few movies. I have no doubts that some owners are going to go way over their data plans.

By points alone, the Xyboard looks like a very close competitor to the iPad 2. But it loses to Apple in the more important categories like prices and available models. I couldn’t recommend a Xyboard over an iPad 2, though there are other potential Android tablets that would be much better suited for your use, even without Android 4.0.

Winner: iPad 2

Interested in a new smartphone from Verizon? The nation’s largest cell provider isn’t a bad choice. Verizon has the largest 4G LTE network in the country, the best data speeds, and some of this holiday season’s best phones exclusively for Verizon customers. So if you’re on the ropes about which provider to sign up with, want to switch, or are already a Verizon customer looking to upgrade, check out this handy guide of tested Verizon smartphones and find one that suits you.

And Amazon Wireless has an amazing deal on all Verizon phones that don’t start with the letter “i”: they’re a penny each! Offer ends November 28th at midnight, so don’t wait!

Apple iPhone 4S

It almost sounds like a copout to day that the iPhone 4S is the best phone available, but that’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it. iOS is still simply better than Android as an operating system, and while the iPhone isn’t the slimmest, the lightest, nor the fastest phone around, it is the best overall package you can get on a smartphone today. You can’t go wrong with the 4S, even if it lacks access to Verizon’s LTE network.

Motorola Droid Bionic

The Droid Bionic is the first Motorola handset to upgrade above and beyond their typical Droid series, and those changes really shine. It’s fast, the enhanced UI is sleek, and as a handset the Bionic stands out with a great gunmetal finish and top-of-the-line charm. You really can’t go wrong with the Droid Bionic thanks to it running 4G LTE, a great Super AMOLED display, and some of the best UI upgrades seen this side of Android.

HTC Droid Incredible 2

The Droid Incredible 2 isn’t what you’d expect in a lineup of high-end devices, but this mid-range phone isn’t to be taken lightly. It’s impressively fast, smaller than most of today’s phones but great in the hand and pocket, and it feels simple but isn’t. The internal hardware is powerful beyond the phone’s needs. It may lack LTE, but the Incredible 2 is, like the name implies, pretty darn incredible.

HTC Rezound

Closing up the bottom of the list, the HTC Rezound has three major first: the first 720p display, the first phone with Beats Audio integration, and the first 1.5GHz processor (in the US). Running on LTE, the Rezound is a speed demon, though all those features kill the battery real quick. It’s literally packed to the brim with features, and prospective buyers won’t be disappointed.

But What About…

Motorola Droid Razr

It’s the thinnest smartphone out on the market today, but we haven’t had a chance to get our paws on it yet. From all reports, the Droid Razr is one of the best Android phones to ever release (which isn’t?). If it’s as similar to the Droid Bionic as I’m told, then it’s likely an excellent buy, but without some hands-on time I can’t recommend it just yet.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Due out sometime this week (or perhaps next week, or sometime soon…there’s no set release date), the Galaxy Nexus has already received rave reviews because of it’s excellent design, great 720p display, brand new Android 4.0 software, and a slew of other things. However, with no word on when it’s due to release, as well as never having tested it ourselves (but expecting to shortly), we’ll keep the Galaxy Nexus under wraps. All I do know for sure is that it’s not quite as powerful as the Galaxy S II, but is intended to be the next “Google” phone, so to speak. Meaning that it’ll receive instantaneous updates to the operating system before most other phones and have limited interference from cell providers (in this case, Verizon) or handset manufacturers (Samsung). But once again, we’ll have to wait and see.

The iPhone 4S is the talk of the town right now, but a new challenger has emerged on the latest and greatest smartphone scene. With more than 4 million units sold in the first three days, it seems as if Apple is the big winner when it comes to smartphones. But meet the Droid Razr, Motorola’s new device begins pre-order today at Verizon stores and online. While many Android lovers might be very excited at the new Droid offering, the question is if Motorola ‘s Razr can compete against the almighty iPhone 4S? Here’s a nice comparison to help you weigh the pros and cons if you should splurge for the new iPhone or go for the good old Android-based new Razr.

Size

The new iPhone measures in at 4.5 x 2.31 x .37 (all inches, HxWxD) and weighs 4.9 ounces. But Motorola is claiming that its Droid Razr is the thinnest 4G LTE smartphone, coming in at only 0.28-inches thick. It’s also 2.71-inches wide and 5.15-inches in height. It’s a bit taller than the iPhone 4S, but it’s a lot thinner, setting a new standard for slim smartphones. It weighs in a 4.48 ounces, which is lighter than the iPhone.

Appearance

The iPhone 4S looks exactly like the regular 4 version, but features some new enticing features and a new OS which means it comes in both white and black options, with a flashy premium finish that sports a glass front and back. Apparently, the new Razr is also a revamp from the original one, but now flaunts a stunning design with stainless steel, some Kevlar backing and sculpted glass, making it quite a beauty. Did we mention it’s also equipped with water-resistant material? Major plus for all those clumsy peeps, but that’s not all. It also sports Corning Gorilla Glass that defends the screen against scrapes and scratches.

Display

The Razr’s 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD screen is super slick and vibrant images. Movies, photos and more look crisp and clean thanks to its 960×540 resolution and 256 pixels per inch. So the iPhone 4S features a 640×960 resolution, creating a pixel density of 326ppi on it’s 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display. It also sports a retina display and fingerprint –resistant oleophobic coating on the front and back.

Operating System

The iPhone 4S’ iOS 5 (and dual-core CPU) is zippy and very responsive, meaning no lag when it comes to games, videos and the like. The new OS has new upgrades and features like: iMessage, Twitter integration, camera enhancements, better photo editing options, PC free, and Siri, the voice-control feature that’s selling buyers on the new iPhone.

It seems like the Razr will be getting the new Ice Cream Sandwich OS, but in early 2012. Originally designed with the Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread OS, the company will update it to the new ICS at the start of next year.

Processor

The Razr is piloted by a 1.2GHz dual-core processer, which allows you to blast your music, check your email and more…all at the same time without any delay. The 1 GB of RAM keeps you rocketing through all that multitasking on the Razr, making for a very fast and reliable phone. As for the new iPHone, Apple provided its new version with an A5 dual-core chip that provides 800MHz.

Storage

The Razr comes with 16GB of internal memory and a preinstalled 16GB microSD card, providing 32 GB of storage for your convenience. As for the iPhone 4S, it comes in three different capacity versions: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, with each a bit more expensive than the next. The Razr clocks in at only 32GB for one price!

Wireless Connectivity

The Razr come with a mobile hotspot support for up to eight Wi-Fi devices. It also sports a free MotoCast app from Motorola that lets the phone stream your music, pictures and documents from your home or work computers — virtually anytime, anywhere — so your content is always within reach. No uploading to a third party means no wasted time, and everything stays protected, right on your computer.

The iPhone’s wireless abilities include being able to print wirelessly and wirelessly stream what’s on your phone to your HDTV and speakers via Apple TV, due in part to Apple’s AirPlay and AirPrint.

Camera and Video

Motorola is allowing you to create some cinematic awesomeness of your own with an 8MP rear camera and 1080p HD video recording that it’s built into its Razr. Ready for all conditions, the phone has image stabilization technology for less blurry videos, too!

One big change from the 4 to the 4S is that Apple upgraded the iPhone’s rear-facing camera, which has been increased to 8MP from 5MP, and it also has a custom lens with a larger f/2.4 aperture. Cool features include: tap to focus, autofocus, face detection in still images, LED flash and more!

Battery Life

For the Razr, battery talk time is up to 12.50 hours of 3G talk time, 8.9 hours of video playback with stand-by time clocking in at 204 hours on average. Thanks to some software tweaks and the ability to accommodate a larger battery for its size and has 30% more battery life than its competitors.

The iPhone 4S has a talk time of up to 8 hours on 3G. Standby time is up to 200 hours, while Internet use is up to 6 hours on 3G and up to 9 on Wi-Fi. It also feature video playback is up to 10 hours and audio playback is up to 40 hours.

Carriers

The iPhone 4S is now available on AT&T, Sprint and Verizon, while the Droid Razr is only on Verizon. This means customers can have more of a choice in terms of carriers with the iPhone 4S.

Price

The Droid Razr smartphone will be available in the U.S. for $299 from Verizon Wireless with a two-year contract and devices shipping no later than November 10. The iPhone 4S starts at $199, but gets more expensive as you increase GB, with pricing at $299 for the 32GB and $399 for the 64GB.

Winner

For the price, the new Razr sounds like a steal, given all its new features, its new appearance and the fact that it’ll be getting an even better OS come early next year. By that time, Apple’s iOS 5 will be yesterday’s news! But its only downfall is that it’s not offered on many carriers, so the iPhone still provides more users to switch over from their Android phones if they have Sprint and AT&T.

With Google’s announcement of Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich), users are now chomping at the bit to update to the latest OS. And while Google did say that that most if not all phones with Gingerbread would see an upgrade to Android 4.0, it’s not a given. So, here is our concise “How-To” on getting you a scoop of Ice Cream.

1. Have the right phone

The rule of thumb here is that the newer your phone, the more likely you’ll get it – and you should definitely be running vs. 2.3 (Gingerbread). Here is the list of phones that should, however, be upgraded: HTC Amaze 4G, HTC Droid Incredible (maybe), HTC Droid Incredible 2, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Shift 4G, HTC G2, HTC Inspire 4G (maybe), HTC Sensation 4G, HTC ThunderBolt, LG G2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Atrix 2, Motorola Droid 3, Motorola Droid Bionic, Motorola Droid RAZR, Motorola Droid X2, Samsung Galaxy Nexus (out of the box), Samsung Galaxy S II – (Galaxy S II, Epic 4G Touch), Samsung Infuse 4G, Samsung Nexus S (Nexus S 4G), and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.

Now, of course, this largely depends no your air carrier and if your phone has an overlay like Motoblur or TouchWiz. Usually, this causes delays in rolling out these updates and as such, it could be later than sooner that your phone gets upgraded. And if your phone isn’t on the list because it’s too old, then it becomes less likely you’ll get Ice Cream Sandwich if you haven’t been given Gingerbread yet. So now may be the time to look for a new phone if your contract is up.

2. Do nothing, be patient

But the good news is, that if your phone is on the list above, sooner or later you’ll get an over the air update to Android 4. That’s because Android phones have the benefit of having their updates done automatically. You wake up one morning and you find that your carrier stocked your phone’s freezer with Ice Cream Sandwich while you were sleeping. And that’s cool. All you will need to do it confirm the installation and let it go. Once installed, you can confirm by going to your phone’s device information screen to see that the latest version of Android is now on the phone. BTW – it’s always a good idea to back up your phone first, just in case, and to plug in your phone via USB or AC adapter during the upgrade. The last thing anyone wants is for their update to go bad because the phone battery died.

3. Do it the hard way

If you’re impatient and want to know if your phone’s update is available, you can manually check for Android updates. Do this by pressing the “Home” key, then the “Menu” button and go to the “Settings” option. In settings, you’ll see the option “About phone” near the bottom. From there, select“System updates” and your phone will look for any new Android updates to download and install. To streamline this process, download the app ANYCUT and you can create a shortcut on your main screen which will do all that with a quick tap. Another way to find out when updates are available is to follow your handset manufacturer and wireless carrier on Twitter. They will usually announce dates so you can be on the lookout.

4. Getting to the root of the matter

Finally, if your phone is too old, or your carrier doesn’t think you should get Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich, or if you’re just too impatient to get it, you can always “root” your phone and download a custom ROM of Android 4 once it becomes available. Rooting means you get administrator access to your phone and can customize it’s functions. There is a very active community of Android fans who are constantly working on versions of Android – called ROMS – which make a new version or Android available to phones that don’t get them, or that streamline the OS – taking out overlays like Motoblur or TouchWiz. A good place to learn more are the XDA Developer Forums. There you can get custom ROMs, Boot Managers, and there’s a very helpful community who are happy to answer any questions and help you troubleshoot should a root and rom go dreadfully wrong.

Wow, Motorola has taken direct aim at Apple. If you thought the RAZR wasn’t a response to Apple’s iPhone 4s, checkout the MOTOACTV, a lightweight, iPad Nano inspired workout device.

The touchscreen measures 1.6-inch, is sweat resistant, and like the RAZR has be reinforced using Corning’s Gorilla Glass. But unlike Apple’s comparable offering, the MOTOACTV can track pace, speed and location thanks to a built-in GPS function (the latest iPod Nano software can track some of this info, but doesn’t include GPS). They’ve also infused it with some tech that measures your performance against your stored songs and creates a “high performance playlist” to push you to that next fitness level. The MOTOACTV is also capable of measuring your heart rate, though you’ll need to invest in either the Motorola SF700 wireless or Motorola SF500 wired headphones, which sport a heart rate sensor and thus negating the sometimes annoying chest strap.

When you’re done with your workout you can upload the stats to the MOTOACTV web portal, where fitness experts can provide feedback and you can compete again friends for the best lap or perhaps the most explosive heart rate.

The MOTOACTV supports both ANT+ tech (used in many of Garmin’s products), Bluetooth 4.0 and can achieve 5 hours on a single charge outside, or 10 hours inside. Included is a strap for wearing it on your wrist or arm and a clip for attaching it to clothing.

The MOTOACTV will ship November 6th for $299 (16GB) or $249 (8GB). The SF700 wireless headphones will cost $149, while the wired version, the SF500 will cost $99.

Despite boasting a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen with a qHD resolution (960×540), the DROID RAZR measures just 7.1mm thick and has been reinforced with KEVLAR fiber and Corning Gorilla glass for added durability. Motorola has also adorned it with some sort of new fangled nano coating that helps repel the inside and outside of the phone from “every day spills”. This ain’t official, but this has to make the RAZR the toughest and thinnest 4G smartphone on the market today.

Complementing the jaw dropping exterior is a dual core 1.2Ghz processor, though Motorola hasn’t said of which type. Unlike Apple’s iPhone 4s, which is capped at 512mb of RAM, the RAZR sports 1GB of memory. It ships with 16GB of built-in storage and a 16GB microSD card slot, though you should be able to update the latter to 32GB. An 8 megapixel shooter sits on the back enabling photogs to capture 1080p HD video, or use the front facing HD camera for video chats. Bluetooth 4.0 and a 1780mAh battery round out the spec set, at least in terms of hardware.

The DROID RAZR will ship with Android 2.3.5 and include two apps from Motorola. The first, MotoCast, allows you to stream media directly from your computer, or download it, however you see fit, right your handset. They’re also tossing in an app called Smart Actions, which automates everyday actions, such as screen dimming or switching to silent mode at select times throughout the day. And let’s not forget about Motorola’s webtop action, enabling the handset to play nicely with their Lapdock 100 or HD station. Lastly, the RAZR boasts a HotSpot function that can support up to 8 WiFi devices.

The DROID RAZR will cost $299.99 on contract and arrive this November from Verizon Wireless.

Verizon Wireless and Motorola Announce DROID RAZR™ by Motorola: DROID Strong. RAZR Sharp.

Impossibly thin with unstoppable power on America’s fastest and most reliable 4G network

BASKING RIDGE, N.J., and LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. – Today, Motorola Mobility, Inc. (NYSE: MMI) and Verizon Wireless announced DROID RAZR™ by Motorola, the world’s thinnest 4G LTE smartphone. A true marvel of design, this smartphone packs strength and smarts into a stylish package offered exclusively from Verizon Wireless.

Measuring 7.1 mm thin, made with KEVLAR® fiber for strength and Corning® Gorilla® Glass for scratch resistance, the DROID RAZR is ready to face the elements. Speed limits are just an illusion with a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and Verizon Wireless 4G LTE. DROID RAZR customers can expect to rip through the Web with speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G.

“DROID RAZR by Motorola combines style, performance and the power of Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network into one innovative device,” said Marni Walden, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. “These are two iconic brands that separately symbolize the best technology available today. The combination will provide an unsurpassed wireless experience for customers.”

“DROID RAZR by Motorola is a testament to the innovation and design possibilities that stem from a strong partnership between Motorola Mobility and Verizon Wireless,” said Sanjay Jha, Chairman and CEO, Motorola Mobility. “We set out to design the best smartphone on the planet and delivered DROID RAZR which is thinner, smarter, stronger than any device on the market.”

Not only does DROID RAZR by Motorola deliver heart-pounding speed, but it has a mind-bending 4.3-inch hyper-vibrant display with more colors than most LCD HDTVs. The Super AMOLED™ Advanced display with qHD resolution dishes out beautiful images and smooth action so on-the-go movies and TV shows aren’t a blur, whether customers stream from Netflix™ or rent from Android Market™. It’s the first smartphone capable of streaming movies and TV shows through Netflix with up to HD resolution.

DROID RAZR customers can take advantage of the Super AMOLED Advanced display and 4G LTE speeds to stream videos with NFL Mobile, only from Verizon. Fans can stay up to date on news, schedules and scores from their favorite teams on the go. NFL Mobile is included at no additional charge for 4G LTE customers for the remainder of the 2011 season.

If cutting-edge visuals are its beauty, apps on DROID RAZR are its brains. Enter MotoCast™, the free Motorola app that lets you stream or download your music, pictures and more from your PC to your phone. The Smart Actions app helps automate everyday tasks and optimizes battery efficiency by letting customers create rules, such as automatically setting the phone to vibrate during work hours or dimming the display at a specific battery level. The revolutionary webtop application allows customers to combine the device with separately sold accessories, like the Lapdock™ 100 or HD Station, unleashing the power to edit documents and browse the Web with a full Firefox® browser on a larger screen – all while charging the device.

Additional features:

Powered by Android™ 2.3.5, Gingerbread
1GB RAM for a fast user interface and multi-tasking
8-megapixel rear camera with 1080p HD video capture and image stabilization technology for crisp and clear videos
Front-facing HD camera for video chat over 4G LTE, 3G or Wi-Fi
4G LTE Mobile Hotspot capable so customers can share 4G LTE speed with up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices
Water repellent nanocoating protects the phone, and even the inside components, against everyday spills
Remote wipe, pin lock and government-grade encryption for email, calendar and contacts as well as voice and video chat conferencing
Use Quickoffice® to view, create and edit Microsoft® Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents on your mobile device from anywhere at anytime

Now here’s a deal that just keeps on giving! Amazon really knows how to treat fans of the Droid Bionic and now you can grab one for the lowest price ever. For those who don’t know about the Bionic it is indeed a very powerful smartphone which provides a large 4.3-Inch qHD touch display. The phone operates off of Verizon’s 4G LTE network which provides for super fast downloads and smooth Internet usage. I runs on the newest Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS for the best in speed and stability and speaking of speed this baby runs a 1Ghz Dual-Core processor for quick and snappy performance. What makes it even better is that its battery is rated at about 10.8 hours of talk time, with standby reaching up to 200 hours. This beats the bests of many other phones on the market by a long shot. You also get a free $50 gift card with your purchase.

$30 price drop in a week. They’ve got this phone for $149.99 and a $50 gift card good towards any item on Amazon

Definitely an item we have all thoroughly enjoyed here on GadgetReview, we have seen some discount prices on this one before but none so consistent as on 101Phones.
If you own an iPod Touch then this is definitely a no brainer!

Thanks to this rebate you can super charge any laptop or compact media PC with 8GBs of speedy and reliable Corsair RAM for about half the price of a new video game. Now that’s what we call a deal.

5. Motorola DROID Bionic 4G for Verizon Wireless with a $50 Amazon Gift Card – $180

This is definitely the lowest price we’ve seen one of these babies going for on contract, but again Amazon has exceeded our expectations and spiced it up further since we wrote about it. Now when you order the Bionic on contract you are also given a free $50 Amazon gift card which you can use to expand your device even further with peripherals or simply save and get something else with.

The words “smartphone” and “indestructible” are generally far from synonymous. However, the Motorola DEFY+ is, well, defying just that. This is actually the second iteration of the device, but Motorola has updated the processor to a speed of 1Ghz, making it 25% faster than its predecessor. It also now ships with the latest version of Android, 2.3 so things are “more fun” according to Motorola. They’ve also added Corning Gorilla Glass to the 3.7-inch touchscreen (we’re not sure if that was in the first iteration), which if you ain’t heard, or seen, is pretty darn indestructible, all things relative to smartphone screens that. Other features include a 1700mAh battery, a 5 megapixel camera, 2GB of built-in storage and an IP67 certification, which pretty much means it can take all the dust and water you can throw at it.

No official word on a release date, but Motorola says it will launch it in Asia, Latin America, and Europe in the fall.
