In what is going around as a MW2 inspired event, Microsoft has banned over a million Xbox Live users who have been using modded consoles online. Word has it that MW2 appeared as a torrent before the official launch and that IW and Activision had been pressuring MS to do something about it.

And they did. Having never really wanted a modded Xbox 360 I can’t imagine how all these people feel not being able to get there game on online. What I did hear at the GameCrazy midnight launch was that only the actual modded Xbox 360’s are banned and not the the user’s account, therein meaning you could get a new Xbox 360 and be ok getting back online using your current account.

Thoughts?

Totally cool for free right! Hopefully this will help Microsoft move some units this holiday season, but having not yet seen an actual Zune HD in person, I’m interested in how good the gaming will be on this thing. If you are a Zune HD owner and download these free games and let me know just how 3D they actually are!

According to MCV gaming site, Microsoft’s Project Natal will launch next November for as little as $80 (we heard $50 last month). The rumor also says that Microsoft will kick out a console bundle that includes the Natal camera and perhaps a few games to go along with it. As of now 14 games are supposedly being readied from a variety of studios, while Microsoft is preparing 5 million unit for shipment during the initial launch.

Project Natal was announced at this year’s E3 and was received with mixed reactions from the gaming and gadget community. The system uses a special camera to read your body gestures and objects, and then incorporates them into the game, providing a more engaging gaming experience, or that’s how the marketing material goes. The Natal is Microsoft’s answer to the Wii, while Sony has their own version arriving early next year as well.

If the Xbox 360 is going to make it to 2015, Microsoft better have definite plans to get Blu-Ray compatibility on board on the ASAP. In a recent interview with Gizmodo, Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer is quoted saying that we will “soon” be able to watch Blu-Ray movies on the Xbox 360.

The CEO had expressed that an external Blu-Ray drive would be the best way to get the format on the 360. I bet it looks identical to ill fated HD DVD drive from a few years back.

At the moment however, Ballmer seems to think that there is enough HD content via streaming sources (NetFlix and the upcoming Zune Video) to keep the masses happy. Are we happy?

How about that web browser?

In other related motion controlled gaming rumors, Sony’s “Sphere” is rumored to be priced at $100. Industry analysts predict that while the Natal is more of an ancillary peripheral in Microsoft’s mind, the Sphere is being looked at as more of a Wii challenger.

In either case, time will tell the true price points soon enough.

Well, folks…seems like you can now officially stick a fork in the Sidekick. The first ever smartphone seems to be out of the game.

It all started earlier this week, when Microsoft announced they had lost all their Sidekick user data. All of it. Pictures, contacts, calendars…just plain old LOST. Since Sidekicks access their data from central servers instead of storing it on board, that means every single Sidekick user (except for those who engaged in external backups) just lost EVERYTHING.

Rumors say it was a failed upgrade involving a Hitachi SAN that took down the Sidekick network.

But Tmobile is sympathetic to the loss and in turn is offering a free month of data service–not REGULAR service, but data service. More telling, however, is what Tmobile is NOT doing right now: selling any other Sidekicks. Every one is showing “temporarily out of stock” on the Tmobile web site.

So you add all these points together, and it sure sounds like the fix is in for the Sidekick.
