On to some not so exciting news.  JVC kicked out a new entry level Blu-ray player today, the JVC XV-BP11.  For $200 you get HD playback, AVCHD compatibility (what some HD camcorders record in) and a USB input.  Yup, far from exciting, but hey, it’s entry level.

Finding the perfect iPod speaker system can be a daunting task at best.  With so many choices to choose from and seemingly hundreds of new brands emerging all over the place, it can end up being quite the process.  What most docks have forgotten however, is old media.  While some of us may have totally abandoned CD’s, there are probably more than a handful of us that still use them here and there, depending on the scenario.  I actually still use CD’s when taking a shower using and old CD player boombox I’ve had for over a decade stuffed on a shelf in my bathroom.

The JVC UX-LP5 is one of the only shelftop iPod dock systems I’ve seen that also has a CD embedded within.  This by itself is a huge selling point for this product that shouldn’t be missed for those of you using both MP3’s and CD’s.

The JVC UX-LP5 keeps it easy straight out of the box as all the major features and inputs are right on the face of the system.  The iPod dock flips up and stows away when not in use and the aux input and headphone jacks are accessible and right in front of your eyes.

The whole system looks really attractive as well with a sleek and futuristic twist using some neon blue accents to highlight the clear and black plastic.  Each speaker uses a sharp chrome ring to bring out contrast between the speaker itself and its container

The whole system is really lightweight and moving it about and adjusting the speakers is no problem at all.  One thing you will notice is that this system picks up a ton of smudges and dust.  If you’re like me and have OCD when it comes to clean and shiny gear, you might want to keep a micro-fiber cloth at arms reach at all times.

When speaking of the sound of the system, the JVC UX-LP5 is really loud at 70 watts but ends up being a little dull and muddy.  Even with the two JVC proprietary sound boosters (Sound Turbo and HBS), the sound ends up being a bit too lopsided.  Crank up the bass and it sounds too muddled.  Turn up the treble and it ends up being too shrill.

There never seemed to be a good balance that could be reached no matter how hard I tweaked the settings.  Regardless of the shortcomings in the audio department, this system can really crank and would be absolutely perfect in households that entertain and party.

The remote was very robust and contained a plethora of options including:  Sleep, dimmer, sound settings, and more.  The thing is, is that many of these functions aren’t accessible on the system itself, so you be amiss if you lost the remote.

I did experience some weird issues when testing out the UX-LP5.  Often times the indexing of my iPod got all screwed up and I would be looking at one song but hearing a totally different one.  Other times the UX-LP5 didn’t seem to know how to handle what input in which it was assigned.  Slow to switch over from CD to iPod, it would just start playing music regardless of where in the menu my iPod was.

All in all, the best parts about the UX-LP5 is the volume capacity and the CD player, which is also capable of playing MP3’s and WMA’s.  The sound is nothing special but that’s just a sticking point given what the system can do for your household.  For under $150, this shelf or desktop system has some great things going for it.

In proper Flip fashion, JVC has brought us their new PICSIO GC-FM1 camcorder to slip into our pockets and record HD video whenever we please.  Looking rather candy-coated and bedazzled this little guy still packs a might tech punch.

Weighing only 95 grams and measuring a mere 53mm x 97mm x 17mm, your pants will only show the bulge that’s meant to be seen.  Using a 8 mega-pixel sensor to capture still photos, the GC-FM1 uses a 2 mega-pixel sensor to record video at 1080p in MPEG-4, AVC, and H.254 formats.

Sporting a 2″ LCD screen for instant viewing, there’s also a HDMI port for TV connectivity.  SDHC compatibility is in there too and you can also choose to record in VGA and QVGA modes.

No word on pricing or availability at this moment.

JVC popped out a new HD camcorder today, the Everio GZ-HM400.  The handheld consumer level camera includes JVC’s Konica Minolta HD lens that not only captures 1920×1080 video, but 5.3 megapixel still photos.  For sports enthusiasts or soccer moms alike, the HM40 can record slow-mo video at up to 600fps, but at those speeds you’ll have to be willing to sacrifice picture resolution at a tune of 640×72.  Image stabilization is optical and uses two active prisms to correct camera shake, while the remaining features include three buttons dedicated to aperture control, shutter speed and a custom user setting; 16 person face detection, One Touch YouTube upload and One Touch Export function to iTunes.

The Everio GZ-HM400 is available now for $999.95, although Amazon has it for $899.95.

JVC Launches New HD Everio Memory Camera For Video Enthusiasts

New HD Everio GZ-HM400 offers Full HD, 9 MP stills and slow motion.

WAYNE, NJ, September 14, 2009 – JVC today announced a new video camera that offers the performance, features and handling demanded by video enthusiasts. The new JVC HD Everio GZ-HM400, available immediately, emphasizes image quality and usability in a design that videographers will find allows comfortable extended use.

The HD Everio GZ-HM400, which records to an SD/SDHC card and includes 32GB of internal memory, features a 10.3-megapixel CMOS sensor that delivers nine-megapixel still images and 1080 TV lines of horizontal resolution for Full HD video. High-speed recording of up to 600fps is also possible for slow-motion playback of sports and other fast action. The camera’s features are easily accessible through an intuitive user interface that features analog-like dial adjustment and direct-access buttons.

The core image sensing device for this camera is a 1/2.33-inch 10.3-megapixel CMOS sensor with Bayer Array RGB Color Filter. This translates into obvious advantages in digital still photography, as nine-megapixel stills are possible without any need for interpolation.

For video, the high-speed image processing of 5.3 million effective pixels applied by the HD Gigabrid Premium II Engine’s super high-band processor results in 1080 TV lines of horizontal resolution — the theoretical maximum level of 1920 x 1080 Full HD. What’s more, the 24 Mbps recording capability of this engine (UXP mode) — the highest bit rate possible for AVCHD video — delivers detailed images with fluid motion.

Optically, the GZ-HM400 features a KONICA MINOLTA HD LENS that provides a high-resolution image source. But perhaps more noteworthy is the JVC-developed optical image stabilizer that uses two active prisms to correct camera shake at the lens entrance before the image enters the lens. The two prisms, compensating in the horizontal and vertical directions, provide the same effectiveness throughout the entire zoom range, from wide to telephoto.

On the top of the camera are three buttons, “A”, “S” and “U”, for selecting shooting modes. “A” selects the Aperture Priority Setting, “S” is for selecting the shutter speed, and “U” is User-Assignable, which lets users assign their own frequently used settings to this button. Positioned next to the lens barrel are controls for manual brightness and focus adjustment; just tilt a lever switch to select either brightness or focus, then turn the manual adjustment dial in the direction desired. This “analog” type control provides more intuitive operation and allows fine-tuning of both settings. What’s more, when used in conjunction with the SET button, this same dial allows easy setting of various other functions with menu-free simplicity.

Zoom is controlled by a seesaw-style zoom lever, which provides smooth zooming. The body is sculpted to offer a sure-grip contour, and size-balanced to afford extended operation with reduced fatigue.

Three different high-speed recording modes are available for slow-motion video playback: 600fps, 300fps and 120fps. For instance, at 600fps, motion occurring over a mere 2.4 seconds is slowed down to 24 seconds (10 times as long), enabling the user to capture crucial moments that are not visible to the naked eye. This function can be used as an effective tool for sport technique analysis, nature studies, and much more.

For still image shooting, up to 60fps 5.3-megapixel stills can be shot in a continuous burst of up to 11 images. Or, if preferred, continuous shooting of up to six nine-megapixel stills at up to 15fps is also possible. It is also possible to shoot 5.3-megapixel stills simultaneously while recording 1920 x 1080 Full HD video.

JVC’s K2 Technology, a proven technology in the audio field that restores fine sound details that are lost during compression, has been incorporated for the first time in a camera.

Other noteworthy features of the GZ-HM400 include Face Detection technology that identifies up to 16 faces to accurately adjust the focus and exposure, as well as One Touch Upload to YouTube™ and the One Touch Export function to easily export videos and stills to an iTunes® Library.

In addition to the SHARE STATION DVD Burner that allows easy AVCHD DVD burning without using a PC, this year JVC offers a new option for playback and enjoyment of GZ-HM400’s recordings. The new CU-VS100 HD Media Player plays back AVCHD video saved on an SD card, with double slots for uninterrupted playback from two cards. HDMI connection to an HDTV assures maximum quality enjoyment without complicated wiring.

PC users will appreciate the GZ-HM400’s Everio MediaBrowser, a single application for everything from simple editing to file playback and management.

If you’ve got a hundred and seventy five thousand dollars handy, and you really want incredible definition in your movies,  then JVC’s newest offering, the OLA-RS4000, might be exactly what you need.

It premiered at the CEDIA Expo in Atlanta, and is a ten megapixel LCD projector that can show movies on four screens simultaneously in full HD or WUXGA resolution.

This is of course a downright amazing projector, and considering how it’s priced it had really better be.  In fact, some might even say that this is overkill, but most of them will probably be shouted down by the eager fan boys desperate to get their hands on one of these even though there’s no way they can afford one.

And here’s one final bit of good news– they won’t even come out for another month yet, so you have plenty of time to line up that second through fourth mortgages on the house so you can afford one.
