Just when you thought your iPhone could liberate you and your laptop from the confines of your home, think again. Apparently, the latest iPhone OS, 3.0 beta 2 will disable the iPhone tethering hack that required absolutely no Jailbreaking. Obviously it was just a matter of time before Apple closed this hole, but here’s hoping that all the new features in the next iteration of OS 3.0 are far from pertinent.

Anybody got an Apple TV? Tired of that crappy little controller? Apple has just released a 3.0 version of its Remote App that now supports controls for Apple TV. It also features gestured moves that allow you to control your Apple TV with greater accuracy. Sources report that the app dramatically improves the flexibility of the Apple TV controls allowing you to move the screen on your phone and search using the keyboard. I also just wanted to mention that the Remote App is really cool to use in a wireless iTunes scenario. My buddy can set his iTunes to Party DJ and I can roll through and make song requests on my iPhone using his library. If more than one person is making requests, you can vote on songs and they will go to the top of the playlist. The updated Remote App is available now for free.

You’ve been waiting for it and yup, it’s finally here! UltrasnOw for the iPhone 3G running software 3.0 is available for download. Remember, you’ll need to Jailbreak your phone first and don’t even try to do this on your 3GS. In case you ain’t heard, Ultrasn0w unlocks the iPhone enabling it to work with any GSM carrier, such as T-Mobile.

Ensure you have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0

Jailbreak your iPhone 3G using redsn0w or PwnageTool (this will also install Cydia/Icy)

Run Cydia or Icy

Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”! If you use the letter “o” you’ll get an error.

Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w

Reboot your iPhone 3G

T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w

Enjoy

The iPhone Dev Team has released the necessary tools to unlock your iPhone running OS 3.0. But, and this is a big but, if you’re looking to jailbreak and use a carrier other than AT&T stop. Contrary to them saying they’d release Ultrasnow today, the tool necessary to unlock your phone running 3.0, they haven’t and they haven’t stated a release date, but it should be very soon. A few other things to consider when Jailbreaking your iPhone:

It won’t work with the latest iPhone, 3GS.

If you bought an unlocked iPhone 3G than you can use the latest PWNage tool since it doesn’t depend on baseband updates

If you have a gen 1 iPhone (like me) then this will work, although they allude to this and don’t outright state that Yellowsnow will continue to work with the Gen 1 iPhone running OS 3.0

A Windows version is coming soon

So as we all know iPhone 3.0 officially hit the street yesterday. Many new and sorely needed functions came with it, such as copy and paste and landscape keyboard when composing an email message. Another biggie included in the update was Push Notification for apps, which means you can receive info from the app without having it open and running. The app I’ve been anxiously awaiting to adopt Push Notification is AIM, and it looks like it might happen soon; hopefully by the end of the month. Why so? Apparently, Apple has invited iPhone developers to start testing AIM push.

As a developer actively working with iPhone OS, we would like your help in a private test of the Apple Push Notification service. For this test, we have selected AOL’s AIM Developer Preview for iPhone OS 3.0 to create a high-volume test environment for our servers.”

This is a promising signing since the AP app was recently tested for push notification and is now available (as pictured above).

Update: Beejive and IM+ 3.0 have submitted their apps to Apple for Push Notification and are just awaiting approval. Theses aren’t free, though.

Note: You’ll need to Jailbreak your iPhone for this to work. We assume Quickpwn will be released in accordance.

Push notification for applications. That means you can get an IM and not have the app running. Sweet and finally

Copy and paste. Double tap on some text and you’ll get a pop up for ‘cut, copy or paste.’ Double tap again and your clipboard will display allowing you to paste from a selection.

MMS

Google and Yahoo calendar support, perhaps among others

iPhone Spotlight (like on the Mac) lets you search the iPhone’s contents (the app must support it, though)

Search in mail, calendar and iPod. This has long been available in the phonebook, so they’re just porting it over

3G tethering

Landscape keyboard in mail and other applications it was not previously available in

A2DP (stereo) Bluetooth so you can stream your tunes to compatible devices

Turn-by-turn directions in Google Maps

VoIP communication with gamers over WiFi – you can talk to them Xbox style

Rumble pack functionality for games

Macrumors has compiled a list of new functions found in the latest iPhone 3.0 build, Beta 3.0. Here’s their list verbatim, but I’m gonna warn you: it’s not exciting.

Ability to close all open Safari windows. Previously there was no ability to close the last remaining Safari window, but a red “x” is now functional in the page navigation, allowing users to close the final window, replacing it with a blank page.
