It’s that time again…when you eagerly count down the hours, minutes and, for some, minutes until your weekend festivities begin. But before you run out of the office, check out all the cool and exciting things that went down in the tech world for the week! From a Star Wars AT-AT Dog Costume to a .22 Caliber Gun Knife and even a Floating Magnetic Lamp, we’ve compiled some interesting reads to help entertain you while you do your weekend countdown. Enjoy!

8. BOSE OE2 Headphones

BOSE has released a new set of headphones, the OE2i and the OE2. The OE2i includes an inline mic that’s supposed to work with the iPhone, but features the same specs as the OE2. Both are lighter and smaller than BOSE’s original on-ear headphones and use memory foam, making them comfortable to wear. The OE2 and OE2is are available now in black or white for $149.95 and $179.95 respectively.

7. Tagg GPS Dog Tracker

Never worry about losing your canine friend thanks to the innovative new Tagg GPS Dog Tracker. As a very small device, simply attach it to your pet’s collar and you can log into the company’s website to track your dog. You can also setup a zone notification so that Fido doesn’t leave the confines of the zone. For $199.95, the Tagg’s master kit includes the tracker, a battery charger, USB and AC plug, as well as a year’s service.

6. Star Wars AT-AT Dog Costume

In celebration of Halloween why not dress up Fido in this cute and unique Star Wars AT-AT costume. It’s custom made by Katie Mello, but we’re sure you can have a professional seamstress replicate it.

5. Real Life-Like Masks from Real-f

The Japanese company, Real-f, is offering a life-like photocopy of your face or head to hand on your wall. Sounds freaky, but, hey, some people like that sort of stuff. So the digital images are printed on to an image on vinyl chloride resin stretched over a mold and then shipped to you to display.

4. Floating Magnetic Lamp

The Light-Light looks like a normal light, but the top – or really the lip of the lamp – is wireless, which lights up and floats freely above the base unit due to a set of magnets and innovative engineering minds (the company is called Crealev). The lights are pretty pricey, which is what you’d expect from some next level lighting like this. The price tag starts at $1,300.

3. iTar: The iPad Guitar

The iTar transform your iPad into a guitar thanks to Starr Labs’ patented button-based guitar fretboard. But the iPad’s touchscreen can also be converted into a “keytar” (piano guitar) or even a drum set, making the possibilities almost limitless! Since Starr Labs is a small shop they’ve created a donation campaign, with $200 minimum to get your own version.

2. SpyNet Laser Trip Wire

Set up a laser trip wire anywhere you want to protect some goods or valuables using The SpyNet Laser Trip Wire system. It comes with a transmitter that beams a laser to a receiver unit, in addition to two mirror units to expand its reach around corners and through doorways. If someone, or something, crosses its path an alarm will go off to notify you of an intruder.

1. A .22 Caliber Knife Gun

A knife that doubles as a gun…only on YouTube! This deadly weapon not only has the ability to cut and stab, but it also shoots thanks to a .22 caliber chamber. Where are the bullets you ask?

Since their inception, the iPad and iPhone have been transformed, thanks to an array of apps, into a variety of instruments. But despite the touchscreen of these device’s boasting an unparalleled sensitivity not found in other handsets and tablets, they still lack the visceral experience many a musician have come to desire. That is until now. Say hello to the iTar.

The iTar transforms the iPad into a guitar using Starr Labs patented button-based guitar fretboard. The iPad’s touchscreen can serve not just as a point of contact to strum the guitar’s string, but can be converted to a keytar (piano guitar) or a drum set thanks to their durable, time test fret board – the possibilities are almost limitless. But to Starr Lab’s point, the are other applications to their iTar. They’re thinking guitar education, music-mixing software, jamming over the Internet, interactive gaming and even a soundboard/lighting controller. Assuming the project is funded they’ll also create an iTar music app for strumming and using the whammy bar, as well as customizing the finger board to your liking.

So here’s the deal. Starr Labs is a small shop and their goal is to mass produce the iTar so they can place it in musicians hands at a reasonable price. While you can pledge any amount, you’ll need to toss $200 into the pot to get your very own iTar.

Starr Labs? These guys have been in the game for sometime now, building custom instruments for Vernon Reid (of the endlessly awesome Living Color), the Chemical Brothers, Pendulum, Linkin Park, Lou Reed, and many TV/film studios. In other words, they’re the real deal.

One look at the Light Pick and you’d think it’s a one trick pony. But not true. This handy guitar tool not only adds a cool effect that will surely wow any audience, but boasts some tech that makes it a worthy $25 investment.

While we can’t comment on the viability of the “string shock technology (SST),” that’s exactly what the company, SCLW, says is inside the Light Pick. It supposedly absorbs vibration, thus increasing the player’s stroke. Though, we couldn’t help but notice that they used “arm” in reference to this, and last we checked guitar playing was in the wrist.

$25 if a fair bit of cash for a guitar pick, so they’ve made sure that the tip, which receives the brunt of the abuse, is replaceable. We can only assume that the Light Pick uses LEDs, and while the batteries are user replaceable, these are not. Sort of a moot point, since you’ll probably lose it before they burn out.

Tapping the Light Pick turns it on. Lay it down, untouched for 16 seconds, and it will automatically power down.

This version of the Light Pick has only one setting, which is 600 beats/minute. In addition to blue, there is also a yellow and a green version.

Since the Light Pick is contoured to match the player’s thumb and index finger, which adds comfort for extended playing, you’ll need to select a version to match your playing hand; left or right.

ThinkGeek is no stranger to musical t-shirts. And we’re not talking about a piece of clothing that has a bands name printed on it. No, we’re referring to the t-shirts that actually incorporate a musical instrument, such as a guitar or drums. We got one a while back, and while the experience was rather novel, it was still a blast to show off to friends and chicks that we wouldn’t otherwise have a chance in hell with. However, if your school, or place of business has instituted a rather stringent dress code your gonna be SOL when it comes to the aforementioned clothing. But alas, their is a bastion of relief, the Electronic Rock Guitar Bag.

A mini amp blasts out the tunes and a set of buttons are programmed to play all the major chords. As a result, ThinkGeek says that you’ll be able to crank out dozens of classic rock songs with very little skill. Much like the guitar t-shirt you just strum your thumb across the fingerboard. There is also room for a 17-inch laptop and a handful of smaller pockets for all your particulars.

Expect the Electronic Rock Guitar Bag to go on sale this August for $49.99. However, quantities will be limited, so you may wanna sign up for their email notification as to when it’s available for purchase.

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, like all the past Guitar Hero titles, comes with a brand new wireless guitar controller. While it doesn’t compare to the real guitar for the upcoming Rock Band 3, it’s pretty darn good in it’s own right. How good? We compare it to the past Guitar Hero guitars to find out.

The Guitar Hero franchise is built on, well, guitars. Obviously. The first plastic instrument for the Xbox 360 (not pictured) was wired, but each subsequent guitar is wireless. Numerous changes occurred since the earliest model, each getting closer to perfection. The original developers of Guitar Hero, Harmonix, took a different route for their music games, and frankly I can’t stand those models.

My affinity towards Activision and Neversoft’s guitars has been based on two major factors: the clicky strum bar and the very button-esque buttons. The resounding click of the strum bar gives confidence in each stroke, so I never feel like I didn’t strum, and more importantly, I know when I didn’t. The buttons feeling like buttons, something durable and curiously enjoyable to push. No one cares about realism when there’s 50 notes to play in 3 seconds on the screen. So long as I’m focused on playing well and not worrying about the buttons, I’m happy, and the Rock Band Guitars never gave that satisfactory feeling.

As for the wireless Guitar Hero guitars, not much has changed. The body has grown and evolved, and I like the openings where the sides connect to the base. It’s more convenient to move the guitar slightly by picking it up on the center, where the weight is. That center mass makes the guitar feel solid, more than the others, though I’ve dropped it twice now and both times the attached sides unclipped and fell off. They’re a snap (literally) to put back on.

Everything else is much tighter. The buttons feel just as good as the previous two guitars. (Note to new buyers, if you don’t already know, it takes about an hour to break in the new buttons. During this period, they’ll feel slightly unresponsive. You should continue playing with the guitar for at least two hours before worrying about poor responsiveness.) The strum bar is slightly louder, which can be a bother, especially in quiet settings. Likewise, the whammy bar is identical to the most recent previous model.

The big difference is in the battery enclosure (moved into the guitar neck), which is less convenient than the simple back panel of previous guitar, but barely so. I like that it keeps the weight distribution centered, and helps the neck feel more solid, ever so slightly. The back and start buttons are huge, especially the back button. And, compared to the most recent wireless controller, there is no more touch-sensitive fret bar. I actually told the guys at Activision while playtesting Guitar Hero 5 (or World Tour) that it’s useless, because moving your hand away from the buttons is too hard, and pressing the buttons super fast is actually pretty fun. So it was good to see them remove it completely in favor of a buttons-only guitar.

And playing on it? The best videogame guitar experience yet. With past guitars, I wore an armband because my wrists would hurt from leaning on the sharp edges. Activision fixed with their latest axe. It feels good to hold, mostly because of the centered weight. The strum bar is a tad loud, and I found that playing Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock with headphones is much more enjoyable than with speakers. The openings on the sides, and the larger back button, help gameplay move along faster because there are multiple ways you can strum, all equally comfortable. Prior guitars were very specific in how users could hold the guitar, so it’s nice to finally have plenty of options.

I absolutely recommend purchasing the new guitar, if you need to upgrade. There isn’t a big enough difference to switch from either previous wireless guitar, but if you’ve had yours for years and it’s time to upgrade, definitely do so now.

The Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock Guitar is available only as a bundle, with the game, on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Wii. The bundle retails for $100 at all major electronics and videogame retailers.

Amplitube has alway been widely recognized as a premier tone shaping plug-in and stand alone application that has pretty much become synonymous with all things associated with digital recording. IK Multimedia has now taken their tried and true GrooveMaker formula and applied it to Amplitube. Aimed at guitarists and bass players, Amplitube and the iRig connector effectively transform your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad into a very portable and convenient practice studio. Before I get to into the review, let me first say that this application doesn’t have any multi-tracking. As much as I wanted it to, it is purely for practicing and jamming along with your favorite MP3′s.

Anybody that’s familiar with the several Groovemaker applications available will feel right at home with Amplitube. The design is near flawless with it’s ease of use and friendly interface directives. The sliders feel smooth and navigating the application really couldn’t be easier. The graphics are representative and clear, never allowing you to feel like you’ve led yourself astray through navigational choices. For those that may be new to this sort of thing, there is a fair amount of help and a whole demo embedded within the App to get you where you need to be. The iRig 1/4 Inch to 1/8th Inch adapter (purchased separately) is the liaison between your guitar and the iPhone. Super simple, it plugs right in and works as soon as the App is booted up. The whole piece has a nice matte finish to the plastic and it is almost weightless.

As far as performance goes, Amplitube is a sure fire winner. I didn’t notice any such latency and everything about the App responded in a moments notice. There was some slow down here and there when loading stomp boxes and amps but it it wasn’t too bothersome all things considered. One thing I did run into was that you need to extend the auto-shutdown time of your phone as I ran into some issues with Amplitube not knowing what was going on. It does in fact work with the screen shut down (see pic below) but there were times when weird and pervasive digital noise invaded the headphones upon screen shut down. It was very unsettling, so watch out. Other than that, I was impressed with how Amplitube dealt with the live conversion from analog to digital and most guitar players will agree that they’d never imagined playing guitar so smoothly on their IPhones.

The biggest disappoint for me was the quality of the sound reproduction. Way too digital. For the sake of reference, I was using an ESP LTD Viper 400 with Active EMG 81 Pick-Ups. A decently “hot” guitar, I was also using a pair of Sony MDR-7504 Headphones as monitors. At no point was I blown away by the tones produced through Amplitube. However, knowing what you’re doing will definitely help you get the most out of Amplitube and the iRig. Trying to get a suitable clean tone while using the Metal Amp isn’t going to work and vice-versa. You can chain three effects simultaneously in conjunction with an Amp set-up, your cabinet of choice, and either a dynamic or condenser microphone. I liked the Clean and Metal Amp set-ups the best. Crunch and Lead Amps were filed in the “whatever” category but it will largely depend on what type of guitarist your are. I got some real heavy Stoner Metal style tones out of the Crunch Amp but it was rather muddy and useless for more precise and technical playing. Most all clean tones sounded OK with occasional distortion appearing when the strings were hit harder.

If you want to jam along with some of your favorite songs, you can import up to 20 tunes wirelessley provided that your phone and computer share the same wireless network. The app gives you and IP address for you to input into your URL, and then you upload the tracks from there. Overall the process was easy and painless. The preferred format is MP3 but I had no trouble booting up an Mpeg-4. Once the track is in the App it just takes a moment to expand and then it’s forever yours.

All the effects sounded as they should with some being better than others. The wah pedal effect was a bit weak but the envelope filter and octave pedals were killer. The noise suppressor is totally essential and without it your are going to be hearing your fair share of digital hiss, so you need to incorporate it with all of your set ups. When it came to distorted tones, the low gain ones were pretty unbalanced even when set at high gain. During other set up experiments I couldn’t dial in enough treble and everything sounded like it was coming from the neck pick up. They were all pretty harsh, but I honestly wasn’t expecting all that much given the fact that even my MacBook Pro can’t render live tones all that well (Amplitube Metal w/ Pro Tools LE). Changing around the cabinets and microphones will definitely provide some much needed “scooping”, but by and large you are going to find a couple key tones and make them presets and stick with them, in which the App can hold up to 36. It’s quite the astonishing feat that IK Multimedia has succeeded where it has with bringing live guitar to such a small device, and I’m interested in seeing if it will sound any better on the iPhone 4, as I did all my testing on an iPhone 3G and an iPad. I didn’t notice any differences between the two minus the fact that Amplitube has yet to be optimized for the iPad’s larger screen.

There are several choices one can make when buying Amplitube and the iRig. The iRig itself will cost $39.99 when it is released in the first week of July, and there will be 3 different versions of Amplitube for you to consider. The full version with all 11 stompboxes, 5 amps/cabinets, and 2 microphones will run you $19.99, whereas the LE version with 5 stompboxes, 1 amplifier/cabinet, and 2 microphones will cost $2.99. Lastly, the Free version will contain 3 stompboxes, 1 amp/cabinet, and 2 microphones. With either the LE or the Free versions, you are welcome to buy stomp boxes at an A La Carte price of $2.99 each. None of the versions will work without the proprietary conversion of the iRig so you know. You can also use the headphone input as an out to an amp but that sort of defeats the purpose of the App. If I were me, I would buy the iRig and start with the Free version, as if I’m just jamming and not recording all I need is a clean and distorted channel without craving such effects as flange, phase, and delay.

My overall impression of IK Multimedia’s Amplitube and iRig for the iPhone is one of vast applause. Never has digital instrumentation been this accessible and innovative. Even if the sound reproduction isn’t stellar, the impact of convenience and low to zero latency will surely standout. I know that Line 6 has a similar product, but I’ve yet to test that one out. While I would have greatly appreciated the inclusion of multi-tracking or tone sharing, I still think that Amplitube and iRig is a huge step forward for guitarists looking to keep their chops tight no matter where they are. I can see this as being a great alternative for when you’re home for the holidays, away from your other rig, or practically anywhere you need to get your jam on.

Pros:

Zero to low latency

Quality user interface

Multiple options for the budget conscious

Cons:

Tone shaping

No multi-tracking

Wireless guitar plugs and adapters have been around since for, like, forever. But most require a belt like holster to support their bulky and cumbersome size. So leave it to the folks at Thanko to sell a system that is small enough to jack directly into the guitar’s 1/4-inch plug. It includes a similar sized receiver and it would appear that both pieces includes a built-in rechargeable battery good for up to 3 hours of jamming. If that isn’t enough bang for your buck the transmitter also includes a microphone jack, though we’re not sure if you can transmit both at the same time.

Man is IK Multimedia bringing the music apps to the iPhone. Line 6 beat them to the guitar-iPhone interface module but the Amplitude iRig looks to be a bit cooler and effectively it turns your iPhone into a guitar effects processor. I’m anxious to test one out and see what the latency is like. Three versions will be available when the app launches and the interface itself will cost $40. At this point I’m not quite sure if there will be any multitrack functions but I hope so.

AmpliTube iRig — $39.99/€29.99** MSRP and is already available for pre-orders from the IK online store as well as from IK selected dealers and distributors worldwide.

At one inch thick, Paper Jamz guitars from Wowwee don’t have any actual strings. They use an innovative and proprietary that allows you to strum the non-existent strings to produce one of three pre-loaded licensed tracks. Each of the available 6 guitars will have 3 modes of play: Perfect Play (just strum along), Rhythm Mode (you control the tempo), and FreeStyle Mode (Just go crazy with the track).

I’m thinking this is going to appeal to the pre-Guitar Hero crowd or a precursor to a child actually learning an instrument. Launching around July or August, Paper Jamz will be priced at around $25 for each guitar. Would you buy one of these for your kid?

There are more than anyone’s fair share of iPhone guitar apps available. Fortunately, there is only one Ezison 100, an accessory designed to work with any guitar app to provide a more realistic guitar like experience on the touchscreen handset.

Just insert the iPhone, connect the headphone jack to the speaker system and walla, you’ve gotta a mini guitar – minus the fret board of course. It runs off 3 AAA batteries and is crafted of wood and an acrylic fiber of some sort – sounds like it will have a nice weight to it.

The Ezison 100, which is made by Japanese Bird Electron, will only have a limited run of 50 units and cost about $300.

This MIDI controller has a full 24 frets and I’m sure is a blast to noodle on. You can email a dude from Misa for pricing information but be sure to check out the video.

Guitarists often choose multi-effects floor units due to their all encompassing prices and mass amounts of digital effects and customization. The Boss ME-25 offers a host of effects in a durable and affordable package.

The built-in Sound Library gives you access to a variety of classic and modern tones with the option to download more via the ME-25′s USB input. The Me-25 will be available to demo at NAMM 2010 and will ship in late January for the price of $276.50.

BOSS UNVEILS ME-25 MULTI-EFFECTS FOR GUITAR

Los Angeles, CA, January 14, 2010 — BOSS® is proud to announce the addition of the ME-25 Guitar Multiple Effects to its popular line of floor-based multi-effects. The compact and durable ME-25 inherits its high-quality sounds from the flagship ME-70, and packs a ton of BOSS tone tools into one amazingly affordable package.

Sporting a quick and easy user interface for professionals and newcomers alike, the ME-25 features a full compliment of COSM® amplifier models. The onboard Sound Library comes loaded with 60 effects combinations suitable for a wide range of playing styles. The ME-25 runs on six AA batteries or AC power, and its portable size makes it ready to rock anywhere.

The ME-25 is stocked full of the best BOSS effects — distortions, overdrives, modulation effects, Delay, Reverb, Harmonist, and many more. The built-in expression pedal controls a number of pedal effects, including wah, octave up/down, and a unique freeze effect. Three heavy-duty footswitches allow the user to select sounds and perform other functions, such as accessing the built-in tuner, tapping in delay times, and enabling the SOLO feature.

The ME-25 is the first multiple effect processor at this price point to include BOSS’ renowned COSM amp-modeling technology. There’s a range of classic amps from clean combos to raging stacks, along with a Super Stack function that gets big amp tone from a small practice amp. A 38-second looper is also included for real-time sound-on-sound recording.

The ME-25 also includes USB connectivity, allowing users to stream audio and other data back and forth with their computer. A powerful librarian is available as a free download to manage sounds, and the ME-25 is bundled with Cakewalk SONAR 8.5 LE for multi-track audio and MIDI recording.

The ME-25 will be shipping in January with a retail price of $276.50. For more information, please visit www.RolandConnect.com.

The You Rock Guitar is a digital guitar that works with Guitar Hero and Rock Band on all systems as well as performing like a real guitar in Garage Band, MIDI, or through headphones and amplifiers. It’s ultra portable and actually breaks down into two pieces for easy storage. Using GameFlex cartridges you can upload more sounds to the guitar and it even works with your iPhone.

I got a chance to use the You Rock Guitar yesterday and was impressed by the seeming endless range of applications and ease of playability. Picking it up and playing it with bass sounds loaded was a lot of fun and while it definitely didn’t feel like a real guitar right off the bat, minutes later I felt my fingers and hands adjust to the strings and fretboard.

The strings felt more like large gauge nylon strings and guitarists will instantly either like or dislike the “action” of the spacing between the strings and how high they are set off the body of the guitar. The fretboard felt pretty cool with the strings being embedded on the neck which worked really well. Tapping mode, which you had to switch to, was awesome and really worked well. My favorite part of my hands on demo without a doubt. I didn’t get to use a pick with it and I can only finger pick so fast so I didn’t get to test the speed or the latency.

I wasn’t blown away with the quality of the samples I heard from the You Rock Guitar but the design and form factor was well though out and it felt really good despite how weird it was initially. This product has some great potential and I hope that some more customization is implemented such as user created and shareable sounds are allowed instead of being forced to buy more and more GameFlex cartridges.

The You Rock Guitar will sell for $189.

Ok, so if you’re like our buddy Jeff you’re still on a life long search for the right band to jam with. But until that time comes you can consider the Boss eBand JS-8. Plug in a USB memory stick and you can load up any MP3 or WAV embedded song your heart desires. Then with a touch of a button you can remove the vocal or guitar track so you can whale along at your own ear scorching tone or fingered fumbled strums all the while recording your performance. If that isn’t enough there are 100+ effects, pitch and tone control and more than enough features to keep you entertained over the long winter break.

Wanna wail like a true rocker? Well, then send yourself off to some sort of institute, because nothing but hard work and practice will get you there. But if you wanna jump on the bandwagon of guitar novelty the Electronic Rock Guitar Shirts should fit the bill.

Using a magnetic pick and the included mini amp, the shirt actually plays chords and notes recorded from an actual guitar. ThinkGeek has them for $30. Check the video after the ‘leap’

Without a doubt the NES Guitar gets the ‘random post of the day award’ (we don’t actually issue that award). Apparently, this is the second iteration of the mod and it actually works. Flipping up the cartridge slot reveals the 3 knobs generally found on a guitar and the AV out and power ports have been converted accordingly. Check the video below for a demo and complete walk through of their work.

While portability is the least of my concerns when it comes to playing Guitar Hero, NEXiLUX’s Miniguitar is one hip looking piece of kit. It comes in 3 pieces and snaps together in a matter of minutes to form an ultra thin wireless guitar. Best of all, it works with every system since they provided the necessary wireless dongle for the PS3 and Xbox 360, and the Wiimote snaps into the back. Hit the video below for a complete walk through. As of right now there is no word on a price or launch date, but it comes in black or white.
