Looking for a challenge to keep your busy at the bus stop? Or how about that long ride in the cab or plane? Why not solve this issue for free. Thanks to Amazon this is easily doable and that’s in the form of the Pyramix game compatible with any Android device. Pyramix is a word puzzle game which requires that you unscramble a special assortment of letters into words of various lengths. These lengths are decided by the position of the pyramid by which you are placing the letters. Definitely a time-passer for those sleuthing types, and depending on your play situation you can also choose between going against a timer or simply playing untimed.

For a limited time Amazon is offering this App for Free!

3D Tech is slowly taking hold. Most TVs sold today support 3D in the smallest sense, with refresh rates of 120Hz or more. 3D can be found on cameras, phones, and game consoles, and this holiday is the best time to get into 3D if you haven’t already. And if you have some 3D hardware already, be it at your media center, your workstation, or even in your pocket, now is the perfect time to upgrade. Take a look at some of our favorite, must-have 3D hardware!

ASUS VG278 3D Monitor + 3D Vision 2

3D needs to make its way into the home, and while most new TVs support 3D in some respect, most computer monitors don’t. Yet, with smartphones and 3D cameras growing in number, handling all that 3D media is going to have to be done somewhere. That somewhere starts, and ends, with the computer. 3D monitors have been available for a few years, but the ASUS VG278 is the first with NVidia’s 3D Vision built directly into the hardware. No need for extra cables and accessories spewing across the desk, just a monitor and your glasses to enjoy all the 3D content you can get, right at your PC. And thanks to the larger 27″ screen size, the 3D effects are easier to see than ever. Add onto that NVidia’s latest version of their 3D glasses, the 3D Vision 2, and you get bigger lenses that cover more space and block more external light, and a better, lightweight design that is easier on the face for longer periods of play. At the same time they still fit over glasses, still last 10-12 hours of continuous use, and now charge with a MicroUSB cable, so your cell phone charger will work with the glasses.

LG Thrill (AT&T)

The Thrill is the second 3D-ready smartphone in the US, and the first to feature a Nintendo 3DS-like depth slider. Compared to the Evo 3D, the Thrill has some very neat 3D options, such as instantly turning 3D pictures and video into 2D, and automatically adjusting the depth when both shooting and viewing pictures. Plus it’s the only 3D-ready phone on AT&T, so if going into the 3rd dimension is your thing and you have a contract to fulfill/upgrade, the Thrill is your phone.

HTC Evo 3D (Sprint)

The HTC Evo 3D may be the only 3D smartphone on Sprint, but it’s also a powerful phone that easily replaces the very popular Evo 4G. It includes not only a handful of excellent features like a powerful processor, an improved 4G antenna and a more ergonomic design, but two 5MP cameras and the ability to shoot 720p 3D video. After we reviewed and enjoyed it, the Evo 3D is a solid phone, with or without the 3D. And the 3D is good to boot.

Playstation 3D Display + Extra Glasses

There are too many potential 3DTVs gamers can choose from, but only one that is built from the ground up for 3D gaming, and even more specifically, for the Playstation 3. The Playstation 3D Display may be small at 24″, but this 1080p TV has two things no other TVs have: SimulView and the Playstation guarantee. The latter means you know the quality is up to snuff (and in my time playing with it, that is absolutely true). The former allows for two players to wear their 3D glasses, watch the same screen, but see two completely different pictures. That’s thanks to the display’s 240Hz refresh rate, which can switch between two different pictures – one for each player – 120 times a second. That means no more splitscreen, and the 24″ monitor will suddenly seem twice as large for two players. The 3D effect really comes to live with scaling multi-leveled platforms and giant levels, and so many games on the Playstation 3 already have far reaching games like that. God of War 3, Infamous 2, Killzone 3…these are all games that really take advantage of the 3D effect, and with this display – built from the ground up by the Playstation team – you get every bit of that.

Nintendo 3DS + Starfox 64 3D and Super Mario Land 3D

I wasn’t sold on the 3DS for a long time, for several reasons: the 3D games weren’t up to snuff, there weren’t many games anyways, and the pricing was just obnoxious. Then games like Super Mario Land 3D, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Starfox 64 3D came out; the price dropped from $250 to $170; and now Mario Kart 7 releases on December 4th. Those new games combined, plus some crazy holiday deals (like finding the 3DS for as low as $100…good luck finding it!) are killer reasons to want Nintendo’s newest portable console.

Tomorrow, Apple will unveil the next iPhone, presumably the iPhone 4GS or iPhone 5. Not only will it be faster and have an upgraded camera, but it will be powered by iOS 5. Here are the top 30 new and improved features that users are going to love.

1. Wireless Sync and activation

Literally right out of the box, new iOS devices will be able to activate without a PC with wireless activation. That’s something that Apple customers have been screaming for as some don’t want a computer, they just want an iPad. This new feature fills that need. And iOS devices don’t have to sync through a USB connection to iTunes. Using a WiFi connection, users can backup to iCloud, as well as sync to iTunes on their PC. And with new over the air (OTA) updating, users won’t have to sync to iTunes to get the latest iOS updates, something Android users have enjoyed since day one. And any time you plug your iPhone into an AC outlet to charge, the iPhone will automatically sync to the Cloud via WiFi and look for a software upgrade.

2. Notification Center

The next new feature is another that isn’t really new to Android users, but that iOS 5 does quite elegantly … it’s the new Notification Center. When users receive a message, whether text or email, iOS 5 will drop down a notification bar in the upper edge of the screen without kicking users out of the app they’re using at the moment. Users can then swipe down to pull down the bar for more details. If there’s multiple messages, users can simply swipe to reply to messages. For messages that come in when the iOS device isn’t being used, the Notification Center has lock screen notification, and a simple swipe will reveal and swipe to reply.

3. Greater Accessibility

This is so high on the list because Apple has always made accessibility to iOS a priority. And these tweaks really help those who are hard of hearing or blind to further use their devices. Features include LED Flash and vibration activation for incoming calls, improved voiceover support, a hearing aid mode for altering voice and voiceover, and custom gestures to perform key tasks. Other improvements include a larger text option, New speak selection, New assistive touch settings, and the ability to Set Mono Audio left or right.

4. Twitter Integration

With iOS 5, Twitter comes built in. All users need to do is go into settings, select to install the official Twitter app and sign in. New users can register within iOS 5 without having to launch the browser and go to Twitter to sign up. Once installed and activated, users will find Tweet options in several places from the Safari browser, the camera app, maps, and contact information where Twitter handles can be added. Additionally, the keyboard has been redesigned for more prominent #(hash-tag) and @ (mention) keys. Location services can also be added to any Tweet, making Tweet ups easier to create.

5. Greater phone support

You remember that the iPhone is actually a PHONE right? It can make and receive calls! That’s what my wife likes to joke about. Well with iOS 5, users have greater phone support including deleting of individual phone calls with a wipe, unsecured call warnings, location notifications for calls not in contacts, and users can now edit their phone number in settings.

6. Enhanced email features

With iOS 5, users can now add a little more flair to their emails with rich text editing of italics, bold, underline, and even indenting. And to make addressing an email even easier, users can now drag email addresses to address fields. Email also will have the ability to organize messages easier with the addition of custom folders. And users can now select & mark multiple emails as read.

7. Enhanced contact features

iOS 5 brings a few extra fields for contact management. Users can now add family relations, as well as social media links

8. iMessage between iOS devices

Users can also send unlimited messages directly to users of other iOS devices with iMessage. iMessage allows you to send pictures, video, text messages, group messages, and contacts to any other iOS device – iPhones, iPads, and the iPod Touch. Users can set up to receive delivery notification and receipts. iMessage works on both 3G and WiFi, and messages are encrypted. And just for fun, users can now use animated GIF images in iMessage (only).

9. Airplay wireless mirroring

Airplay mirroring comes to iOS 5, allowing users to use their iOS device through AppleTV on their TV set. Suddenly, that iPhone or iPad screen is 50″, making it ideal for meetings or even game play. And the image will also rotate on the TV as it does on the iOS device as you alter it.

10. Enhanced camera control

Users have been screaming for this feature and now they have it. In iOS 5, users will be able to take capture those instant moments with a Lockscreen camera control, meaning that they don’t have to go into the camera app to snap a picture. Additionally, users can use the up volume button to snap photo. And users have greater control over what the iPhone focuses on with one tap auto focus. In camera editing features are also added including with red eye reduction, rotating, and cropping. Users can also organize their photos in camera roll with the addition of albums. And here’s a great additional option – users can use their iPhone earbuds as a remote trigger by using the Volume UP button.

11. Photostream

Through Photostream, users can now automatically upload images and videos to the Cloud and directly to all iOS devices and their Desktop PCs. Additionally, iCloud stores every photo for 30 days and every iOS device will store the last 1000 snapshots. Your Desktop, however, can store them all.

12. Improved Facetime features

Apple has also finally freed Facetime from the confines of WiFi. Users can now video conference over 3G. And they don’t need a SIM to initiate a call either as calls can be made via phone number or email address. And what could be better? How about airplay support? Facetime now enjoys airplay mirroring for video conferencing over your TV set through AppleTV. And video quality is improved.

13. iCloud

Here’s the biggie. Users can take advantage of the Cloud with wireless backup and restore. Users can also schedule daily over the air backup or disable iCloud syn via 3G to save bandwidth. As previously mentioned, iOS 5 will also automatically sync and backup to iCloud every time users plug in their phone to recharge and look for updates. Images, videos and files are also backed up to the Cloud and synced down to other iOS devices as well as your PC via iTunes. And speaking of iTunes, users have the option of a free 256kb upgrade of songs if backing up to iCloud, with any apps or music purchased not counting towards their monthly cap. Users get 5GB free, with additional storage options ranging from $20-100 annually. And Find My iPhone is also available as a part of iCloud integration with an option to disable it.

14. Calendar enhancements

Calendars become more useful with a tap to add event option, tap and drag to adjust time and duration of an event, swipe left or right to view a different day, and viewing of event attachments.

15. Location based Task manager

iOS 5 makes people more productive now with the Reminder Task Manager. Tasks can be created and checked off, as well as syncd w/ iCal and Outlook. Reminders can also be location based, meaning when your iOS device sees where you’re in the vicinity of a task, it’ll remind you to do it. reminders. Reminders — Instead of taking notes on your iPhone’s notepad app or putting a reminder in your calendar, you can now use Reminders in iOS to create a digital to-do list right on your iPhone. The geo-location abilities will trigger surrounding events for you to choose from.

16. Storage usage and clean-up

Here’s a nice feature for housekeeping of your iOS device. iOS 5 brings Storage Usage Clean Up so that we not only see what files have taken up space but also the option to empty that space of Apps, Game saved data, Music, Videos etc. with single wipe.

17. The Assistant

iOS 5 brings a Voice activated assistant feature. With a long press of the home button, your iOS device will interact and respond to voice commands. Users will be able to drive hands free and tell the phone to send email, texts, get maps, tweet, and even make phone calls. Based on the popular Siri app, which Apple recently purchased.

18. Split keyboard for iPad

If you’ve ever used an iPad, you know how hard it is to thumb type. So iOS 5 adds a split keyboard option to make it easier to type in portrait mode.

19. Video and music now separate apps

With iOS 5, the iPod app is retired in exchange for separate video and music apps. Seems kind of odd, but it was actually done with the iPod Touch, so this change makes it consistent across all iOS platforms. Users can also move between tracks with a swipe to the left or right (iPad only) and a slide will delete a song right away.

20. Custom Tones

To make the iOS experience more personal, users can now add custom tones for Calendar events, send/receive mail, voice mail, week view on calendar, year view on calendar (iPad) and more. And of course, that means a new TONES App store!

21. Dictionary

Not an earth shattering feature, but it’s nice that dictionary has been added and is available in every app.

22. News stand subscriptions

Available through iBooks, users can now subscribe to magazines and newspapers. Searching by popularity of subscriptions is also a plus.

23. Cellular Network for App Store

If users want to be stingy with their bandwidth and only download apps over WiFi, they now have the option to Enable or Disable App Store downloads via GPRS and 3G.

24. Faster Safari

Safari has become streamlined and is faster to load. Users can also save web pages in reader mode which eliminates all ads to make them easier to read. They can also be saved off line to read later. And in the iPad, Safari also offers Tabbed Browsing support.

25. Alternate Routes in Google Maps

Ever frustrated when Maps gives you a route that’s longer or goes out of the way? In iOS 5, users can choose alternate routes that are more to their liking. For those who prefer things old school, users can now print directions from their iOS device.

26. HD YouTube

Users now have the option to stream HD/HQ videos through YouTube over 3G. For those concerned about bandwidth, the ability to disable HQ video playback is also available in settings. Nice.

27. Disable In-app Purchases

As a dad, I really appreciate this option. With iOS 5, users now have the option of disabling in-app purchases. No longer will I have to pay for things I didn’t want to buy because the purchase was done in-app without our knowledge or consent.

28. Game Center Enhancements

By contrast, Game Center now allows in app purchases of games. Users can also further personalize their account with photos, and decide if your profile is private or public.

29. Weather updates

The iOS weather app becomes more useful with hourly updates, local weather, and the ability to swipe the weather widget in Notification Center to see a 5 day forecast.

30. MultiTasking

Users can now do gesture based multi tasking (iPad only). With a swipe of 4 fingers, the app switcher appears. Pinch will return to home screen. And a swipe left and right to switch between any actve apps

There are over 200 new features to iOS, and depending on which iOS device you use, some or all are available to enjoy. But it’s certainly a well thought out and welcome update which will only get better with the addition of the new iPhone!

Amazon is offering the lowest price on the net on a copy of Dead Island for Xbox 360 or PS3!

For all your zombie fans out there here’s a new game to quench your thirst for blood and violence, but this time in a much more up close and personal way. Dead Island lands you onto a beach island resort which seems to be the hot spot to stay if you have you pockets filled beforehand. But this quickly turns to chaos as a mysterious zombification occurs and locks you in a situation where only 4 of you are still alive and human. Turns out you guys are immune, and that can only mean one thing… Bash the brains out of the living dead and survive while being cut off from the rest of the world. This game features 4-Player coop action and provides you with a much more gruesome experience as you wield literally thousands of weapons to bash your opposition with. This game definitely focuses on the melee combat which is a nice change from the traditional guns and really gives you a chance to burn off any latent aggression with friends online.

$14 in instant savings cuts the price to $45.99. Other places sell it for much more, and you’ll get free delivery

Thanks to new technology, classic board games we’ve come to love as children have evolved to include electronic elements to their game play to fit modern times. These digital makeovers add some cool electronic features that add and enhance gameplay (as well as price). We’ve compiled some of your favorite classic board games that are now considered electronic board games!

8. Guess Who Extra

The classic game gets some fun extras with Guess Who Extra, such as an electric timer, light and sounds that all make for more fun! As the deluxe version, it has 6 different character themes and 120 new characters to play with and all the game pieces are contained in a new case for fun on the go!

7. Trivial Pursuit Digital Choice

Play your favorite trivia game just like how you used to play as a kid, but read questions off an electronic unit instead of the traditional cards with the updated Trivial Pursuit Digital Choice version! But now you can easily customize the trivia game by downloading your own questions, making game play a bit more personal than before. You can also download up to 1,800 questions from more than 100 micro categories of your choice free!

6. Monopoly Electronic Banking Edition

Monopoly goes digital with its Monopoly Electronic Banking Edition that adds a special new banking card system. While the rest of the classic game remains the same, the paper money has been replaced with credit cards that you swipe with the middle console every time your earn or owe money. Properties are also new and features he upscale blue Times Square to the economy purple Texas Stadium. In this game, you can go to jail for identity theft or lose $1 million when a virus infects your computer network. And of course, property values are exponentially higher than in the original game.

5. Electronic Battleship Advanced Mission

The ultimate sea duel game in a new electronic form, Electronic Battleship Advanced Mission features wailing sirens and flashing lights that add to the intense gameplay. Match your wits with your opponent in four different games or play solo as you challenge the board on three different skill levels.

4. The Game of Life Twists & Turns

Like the original, The Game of Life & Twists is still a fun family game. The new LIFEPod keeps track of player’s money and helps manage the game, while a fake VISA card stores your money. Offering more choices and possibilities than the original, the updated version also flaunts a new price…that’s in the hundreds!

3. Scrabble Flash Cubes

As the electronic version of the classic game, Scrabble Flash Cubes will challenge you to make words out of the electronic tiles! But this version goes above and beyond the original version and allows you to put your word skills to the test with three different solo and competitive games, while sliding, swapping and shuffling your way to victory!

2. Battleship Live

The game of naval warfare has undergone a total digital makeover. Half board game and half video game, the new Battleship Live will feature a central tower with an infrared camera hidden inside that’s able to automatically detect where all of the ships and other pieces like cannons and spy planes are on the board. The upgraded Battleship Live will become available later this fall.

1. Monopoly Live

Monoply has undergone several makeovers in the last decade, as the original now sports different themes, as well as a special new bank. But Monoply Live takes the game to an entirely new level and incorporates a computer into the mix. The paper money and dice has been removed and replaced by a red tower in the middle of the board that uses infrared technology to track each player’s piece, counts their money and tells them where they need to land on the board. There are also new board “events” that involve a horse race, auctions and the ability to upgrade your properties’ utilities to eco-friendly. Expect to see this version on shelves for this year’s holiday shopping season!

Sex is everywhere—movies, film music, TV, art and more. So it’s only natural that it finds its way into video games. After all, hardcore gamers need to get their “fix” somewhere since they’re obviously not doing given they’re always stuck to the TV/computer with a controller in their hand. Because not many know of such porno-like scenes in these games, we thought we’d spice up your day and run down the list of some hot ass video game sex. Warning: you may get turned on by some of these scenes!

7 . Fear Effect II

These two video game babes know they’re hot and aren’t afraid to use it to get by some peeping guards…definitely an “interesting tactic, Hanna,” as Rain better says. It leaves your imagination flowing widely, don’t you think?

6. Dragon Age: Origins

The sex scene featuring Morrigan and Lelianna in Dragon Age: Origins isn’t as raw as the previous others, but it’s nonetheless pretty darn good. More on the sensual side of love making (complete with slow music), it can still get the blood flowing! But it seems that one gamer knew the right moves to get the same scene with two chicks…too bad he won’t tell. At least you can watch. So which do of the two do you prefer?

5. Heavy Rain

Heavy Rain’s sexy time scene has to be the most realist sex scene. It’s almost like it should be in the movie, as the characters take it slow with a little bump in grind before really going at it. They even have the little noises and heavy breathing perfected!

4. Indigo Prophecy

Well some of the other games’ scenes sort of imply the sex without really showing it, Indigo Prophecy really shows the naughty act practically in its entirety. More games should be doing this!

3. Mass Effect II

It seems intergalactic sex is what’s happening with shipmates in Mass Effect. To add to this outer space orgy, you’ve got girl on boy, girl on girl, and human and alien sex! Looks more like a sci-fi porn than a game!

2. Grand Theft Auto IV San Andreas

The Hot Mod Coffee sex sequences aren’t officially part of the game and were found buried in the code by a modder set to bar some graphic sex scenes. You have sex scenes galore in this video game, with everybody doing everybody at strip clubs, cars and more! Oh yeah, let’s not forget the lesbian sex scene.

1. God of War III: Chains of Olympus

First some nice girl-on-girl threesome action then some action of your own, which requires to really put your fingers in it…to complete your mission, in Aphrodite’s bed of course! Guys, you might want to play this scene over and over for a bit. But there’s more! You get to score again with two hot chicks, too! God of War III just might replace your need for “Skin-a-max!”

Tossing back a few cold beers and remembering your evening is a walk in the park. Factor in a game of beer pong, otherwise known as BayRoot on the East Coast, and you’ll probably have a hard time remembering your entire evening, let alone keeping score.

The Scorzi – yes, that is an abundantly witty name – is a coozie meets score keeper. It’s made from stainless steel so even the drunkest of players should have a hard time destroying this drinking apparatus. A foam insert keeps your beer cold, but that’s the hardly the mainstay of this drinking tool. A ‘home’ and ‘away’ drinking score ring allows you to keep tally of the points. It’s limited to games that cap out at 21, but in drinking games there are no rules, so you can just bend them accordingly. They say the Scorzie can only hold a 12oz can of anything, while beer bottles will fit a little loose.

Chances are the Scoozie will never be a run away hit, but it’s a novel approach to a novel problem. You can order one for $12.99, or two for $10.99 each.

Summer might be on its way out – we know, hard to believe – but that doesn’t mean you can’t relish in the remaining weeks of warm weather and long days. Come to think of it, there is probably at least 6-8 weeks of solid weather remaining, and if you’re on the East coast of the US that generally translates into “hot and sticky”. The only way to avoid the humidity is AC or dunking yourself into a body of water.

The Water Hockey Rink is ice hockey meets slip and slide. Thirty nozzles spray 24-inch high fountains of water that saturate the surface and allowing the over sized plastic pluck and players to slide around, which will surely result in a torn groin or two. At either end sits an inflatable hockey net, while two included soft plastic hockey sticks help you defend your goal. You’ll of course need a garden hose and a penchant for short lived games, unless of course you included some sort of alcohol, though we’d never condone such a thing to a minor. It’s too bad they don’t make a version large enough to accomodate 4-6 adults, however that would probably lead to additional injuries.

Hammacher Schlemmer sells it for $49.95.

Mattel’s Mindflex game was received with both cheers and jeers when it launched a few years ago.

The original game called for the player to wear a headset that read brain activity. An increase in brain activity increased the fans power and thus a higher floating ball. Conversely a decrease in brain waves lessened the fan’s power and thus the opposite affect. To complete or win the game, the user had to turn a dial and position the floating ball through a variety of hoops all the while remaining focused on maintaining brain activity.

However, the latest iteration, Mattel’s Radica Mindflex Duel game, pits you against another opponent. Instead of a set of a hoops players battle to push the same fan power balled into their opponents “end zone”. We’re not entirely sure how it works, but we’re assuming that the brain wave activity is linked to both the fan power and the movement of the ball.

You know how you can sometimes just take one quick look at something and go “DAMN SON!” Yeah, when I saw these pictures of the new gamepads from PDP for Marvel vs Capcom 3, that’s exactly what I thought. They put the original Street Fighter 4 Fightpads to shame. I mean, holy hell, look at this thing!

To take a look at the box (art), hit the jump. Here’s a quick look at the box it’ll come in.

Open

And closed

Update

Official word from Mad Catz is that these are not licensed by Capcom, and that technically no permissions are required for PDP to make the gamepads. What that means is two things: one, they may not be around very long (so if you want one you may want to pre-order it right away), and that Mad Catz may reveal their own licensed gamepads for MvC3 very shortly.

4.5 out of 5 stars

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Bungie is just one company that should be flattered then, because while the first NOVA borrowed reluctantly, the followup really took to heart Pablo Picasso’s saying that “great artists steal”. With Gameloft’s sequel, the similarities are no longer an afterthought. They are immediately noticeable. But what the heck, who cares, we’re looking for the best game on the iPhone, and NOVA 2 does not disappoint.

The first person shooter, developed by Gameloft, pits players six years after the original game as the same super-soldier badass, now fighting against a puppet government under alien influence. In his usual way, Kal Wardin takes all the guns he can get, drops onto whichever planet needs to be cleaned up, and runs the gamut of enemy lines until there’s nothing left but bodies and ash. To keep this review brief and concise, I’ll leave out portions of NOVA 2 that are ripped from other games. That’ll save us both plenty of time.

That funny AI looks awfully familiar…

This mid-paced shooter isn’t so different from the original from a gameplay aspect, yet everything is fine tuned and added to. More and larger enemies, two major driving sequences, several new alien weapons, and a larger emphasis on tactics as opposed to just straight shooting…these are just some of the major improvements. Graphically, NOVA 2 employes new unique and colorful environments, and all of our favorite characters return, crisper and cleaner than ever.

Most of the plot is a throw-away, a method of getting players from one location to another, and it’s not memorable or important. Cutscenes are generally short, though a few were surprisingly well done, with slow-motion scenes and amazing feats. In fact, there are a handful of very neat moments in NOVA 2, but they are rare and all too often are gone as fast as they came. The opening cinematic is also quite spectacular, and it’s worth watching when the opportunity arises.

Combat is like any console first person shooter, utilizing two (digital) analog sticks and several key (virtual) buttons. Players can shoot the selected weapon, reload/switch weapons, use an alternate attack, and jump. Movement is controlled on the left side of the screen while aiming and all secondary buttons are on the right side. These buttons include a secondary attack (which there are now multiple attacks, including a stun and melee), jump and shoot. Shooting can be done while turning by clicking on the shoot button and, without removing your thumb from the screen, sliding it in the desired direction.

Vehicle sections are particularly treacherous, but also surprisingly fun

Graphics have received a slight boost, but the bigger change is the art design. There are more colors in NOVA 2, better rendered environments, and a far better opening cinematic. It’s not a stunner like Infinity Blade or Rage HD, but on the scale of high-quality iPhone games, NOVA 2 is right up there.

Gameloft also included support for the gyroscope built into the iPhone 4/iPod Touch 4th gen, which you may or may not love. For certain gamers and certain scenarios, it’s a very useful feature, allowing players to turn their phones slightly (or far) to actually change the direction of aim. That said, unless you have 360° of movement, turning through sliding a finger on the screen is the main way to aim, but now players can keep their finger on the trigger and turn their phone’s slightly instead of actually sliding that finger across. Its use is completely up to the player. I found it extremely annoying at times, and just couldn’t aim with it. Why? Because I felt like it should be inverted, but there is no option to invert the function. It’s a cool feature, that’s for sure.

Now where do I know this game from?

Multiplayer on NOVA 2 is…hectic, to say the least. It’s almost like a bunch of Xbox 360 gamers playing competitively, but with their feet on the controllers. Everyone’s doing their best to shoot and kill opponents, but it’s not as easy when the game isn’t helping you shoot or when the bad guys don’t stand still and take your bullets. That said, most players are just downright awful. Others are disgustingly good. The problem is on a handheld like the iPhone, it’s so easy to just drop the game when you’re doing poorly that people do it all the time.

It really doesn’t matter what kind of gamer you are, NOVA 2 is one of the most intense, fast paced and well-made games on the iPhone. You would be remiss to skip out on it, unless the only games you play are Angry Birds and Solitaire. In which case, why are you reading this review? Seriously, go back to your real life or whatever.

3 out of 5 stars

Pros:

Easy to pick up and play

Local WiFi multiplayer mode

Reward system

Cons:

Redundant game play

Not as epic as the board game

Online play limited to WiFi

What’s life without a little risk. If you don’t take risks, chances are you won’t get any where. The same applies to the game “Risk”, a board game from the 80s. Now thanks to the minds at EA, you can play the same game on the iPad in HD resolution and full color.

I remember Risk as a game that took days if not weeks to play. Seinfeld, the TV show, reemphasized this in one episode when Kramer and Newman literally carried the game board any where they travelled for fear that the other would cheat during the all out battle. This, however, is not your childhood Risk. It can be played in a matter of minutes, which for some will prove satisfying, while others will be left yearning for more.

For the sake of those unfamiliar with the game, and its constructs, there is an in game tutorial that will provide pop ups providing instructions on how to proceed with battling your nemesis as well as redistributing troops. However, the tutorial will only guide you so far and won’t assist in strategy of the game; more the operation.

You can play over WiFi against up to 4 friends, or battle it out against the computer, or a mix of the two. Alternatively, you can play a “pass mode” which requires you to physically hand the iPad to your friend. There are up to three difficulty settings. The harder the setting the less soldiers issued and the more aggressive the computer.

When the game begins, you are presented with a preset amount of soldiers that you can distribute throughout the world. Alternatively you can have the computer populate the earth with your forces, which is a nice option if you’re looking for an expedited game.

The goal of Risk is to conquer the world by attacking and eliminating your enemy. It’s a turned based game that includes three different operations.

Distribute new soldiers

Fortify troops

Attack opposing forces

As you eliminate enemy soldiers in each country you’ll earn points and cards which when paired together and traded in, can result in significantly increased troop reserves. This is the key to winning the game as vast number of troops is necessary to winning or conquering the world.

Much like the original game, which uses a set of dice, the iPad version includes a virtual version during attack. The die are used to determine who wins each battle. If you roll a 6 and your opponent rolls a 5 you win that battle. Each die represents a solider, so as you’ve probably already assumed losing results in the elimination of a solider. However, if you both roll the same number, by default, and I don’t know why, your opponent will win and one of your troops will be eliminated.

While each battle can have an inordinate amount of soldiers, three dice, or soldiers is the maximum that can face off at any single time, though less dice will appear in the event that your reserves in that location drops below three. If you face off against a lesser force, with say only 2 soldiers, your odds of winning will be increased, that is assuming you choose to roll all three dice at the same time. If you so choose, you can skip the dice rolling experience all together and opt for the computer to determine the outcome, which expedites the process significantly. Once all enemy soldiers are eliminated in a country, which can range widely in numbers depending how entrenched your enemy is, you’ll will own it, which is represented by your team’s color.

As you conquer countries and continents you’ll be awarded cards. These cards can be traded in, assuming you’ve got three that can be matched together – I still don’t know how this works and nor is it explained – to receive new troops. During my play I received a wide variety of cards that featured tanks, soliders or planes on the face. You can opt to have the computer match the cards and optimize your experience, or you can manually manage the process. After a certain number of cards are collected you’ll be forced to trade them in. The cards are paramount to winning the game as it provides you with troop reserves and reflects your ability to efficiently conquer countries and continents. On the converse if you don’t effectively attack your enemy you won’t be rewarded the same cards and the chances of losing the game will be vastly increased.

Unlike the game of your child hood, this version includes sound effects and some graphics. During troop fortification and battling you’ll experience gun fire and the sound of troops marching to their location. While these add another level of depth to the game, it can become a bit redundant since the variation in sound effects and graphical elements is rather limited. But keep in mind this is a product of the game itself, which lacks very little variation in actual game play.

In terms of replay value, the game is almost endless. Though, for some the game play, since short lived, will prove significantly redundant. But hey, that’s the nature of the beast, right? Unfortunately for me I didn’t play enough of the game to achieve any of the above rewards, which for those of you that like having your ego stroked could be the single biggest influencing factor to get you to return to the game again and again.

Risk, as a board game, was known for its strategy based play. This isn’t your childhood game and nor should it be confused for it. It’s been adapted for the “need it now, get it now, always on” society, and far as I’m concerned fits that bill perfectly.

You can buy Risk HD for the iPad from the iTunes store for $6.99.
