Back in November, a rumor surfaced that Amazon was set to release a new version of their Kindle, the Kindle 2. The rumor set release date to happen sometime in Q1 of 2009. Guess what? Yup, folks in the press world have been invited to an event in NYC on February 9th, 2009 at the Morgan Library. Course, the press invite doesn’t get specific, but given it’s from Amazon and coincides with the aforementioned date, I’d have to agree, and say there is a more then strong likelihood of a new and update e-reader from Amazon hitting the market.
Shamefully I didn’t receive an invite, but nor would I attend since I live and LA and have to trek to Chicago Feb 12th as it is.

If you recall, a few weeks back there was a rumor circulating that Amazon was set to launch a new Kindle, a college friendly Kindle at that. Although there’s nothing in these ’spy’ shots to confirm that particular rumor, it does solidify the notion that Amazon is refreshing its Kindle, but perhaps for worse. How so you ask? They’ve done away with the SD card slot, tossed in an iPhone battery job (not user accessible) and no more leather casing. It still rock EVDO, a good chunk of memory and they’ve added USB charging and rounded corners. Rounded corners! I knew Amazon has something in their war chest.

E-readers are nothing new, but Sony stepped it up today with the introduction of the touchscreen PRS-700. Sporting similar dimensions and svelteness of the original Sony e-reader, the PRS-700’s 6-inch screen allows readers to intuitively flip through a book, magazine or newspaper by sliding their finger across the screen. Happen across an interesting article? No problem, just call up the virtual keyboard or use the stylus to jot a note. They’ve also tossed in a bed partner friendly LED reading light for night time witch stories. Total memory has been bumped allowing for up to 350 e-books, which is further expandable via SD or Memory Stick duo cards.
