There’s home made kit and then there’s HOME MADE KIT.  The ‘Secret Knock Detecting Lock’ is a complete slam dunk.  Built from an adrino board, pvc piping and a set of suction cups, the device attaches to the door and when it detects a preprogrammed knock (based on rhythm – it can be faster or slower) it activates its motor and physically turns the deadbolt.  A set of LED lights indicate when a knock is detected and flashes from red to green when the correct secret key has been entered.  To program the little doodad you simply press a red button and then knock out the key – I suggest doing this on a bathroom door away from eaves dropping ear.  Make this and I’d totally buy it.  Check the video below.

The door peep hole has been around since pretty much the dawn of, well, doors, and it really hasn’t changed all that much.  And if your peep hole is anything like mine you can’t make the post man from a man with a post.  The Peephole Viewer replaces your preexisting analog version and provide a crisp digital screen that even allows you to zoom in on your subjects.  Installation just requires you to remove your existing peep hole, install a mount and soon you can see all your friends, or foes on its 2.5-inch LCD.  It takes two AA batteries which are good for up to 1700 views and the screen will turn itself off after 10 seconds of inactivity.

The Ping Pong Door has yet to go on sale but I can guarantee a pre-order from just about every college fraternity.  I don’t think too much explanation is needed but as you can see the ping pong table swivels out on an x-axis.  It’s not practical for an actual ping pong game since the area around the table is limited, but it would surely make for a great Beer Pong table.

I’m not sure why every NYC high rise doesn’t have one of these, but the Energy Generating Revolving Door is really a no brainer.  A transparent glass ceiling inside the door shows off the door’s inner workings and displays the amount of energy created.  The door will produce up to 4600 kwh of energy each year, but times that by all the revolving doors in one city and we’re talking decent numbers.
