If the ReNu solar powered iPhone docking system piqued your interest then listen up, because Regen is at it again.   The REVERB is a giant speaker that stands 35-inches high and can be powered by, you guessed it, the sun’s solar rays.  Up top is an Apple 30-pin dock, 2x USB ports, 1x USB input for charging the unit and a 4-inch LCD to display all the track info your eco heart desires.  Speaker wise were looking at a set of stereo drivers and a 6-inch subwoofer.  A full charge in direct sunlight outdoors takes 20 hours, while inside takes 40, which produces 4.5 hours of play time at full volume or 12 hours at ‘normal’ volume.

The REVERB will be available this coming April for a mere $2,299, but you can preorder one now for $500 down.

Still trying to figure out how to make your iPhone a tad greener and all the while not cluttering up your desktop?  The Regen’s Renu solar panel is a modular system that charges on its own and when the time comes, can be placed in one of their two docks to charge up the iPhone.  That means you don’t have to expose your iPhone to direct sunlight, potentially harming the phone’s fragile components.

Renu currently offers an iPod dock, which just does the usual or you can opt for the more expensive but heavier featured Sound Dock, which includes a set of speakers and a slot for Regen’s Renu solar panel, providing up to 8 hours of sound or power to your iProduct of choice. The Renu solar panel takes about 3.7 hours to charge in direct sunlight outside and 7.3 hours of ‘direct sunlight indoors’.

Regen’s iPod Dock and Renu Solar Panel will ship next February for $249, while the Sound Dock will ship April 2010 for $149 (that price doesn’t include the $199 Renu Solar Panel).

Yamaha hasn’t exactly been knocking down doors when it comes to cool and noteworthy gadgets, but that is all about to change thanks to the TSX-W80.  At first glance it appears to be your standard bedside alarm clock, but stare a little closer and you’ll notice the built-in iPod dock.  But what’s even cooler is the included wireless dock that lets you stream your tunes sans wires to the system’s speaker system.  And of course you’ll also find an FM/AM radio with presets as well as digital clock and alarm.  There’s no word on a price but expect it sometime this December, that is if it ever comes out in the States.

Altec Lansing announced the inMotion Classic iMT620 portable speaker dock for the iPhone and iPod this morning.  That stand you see actually doubles as a handle and can be swiveled down for a svelter more storage friendly form factor.  Inside the device is a 5 hour rechargeable battery as well as a remote cubby for storing the fully featured remote that allows you to control all your iPod’s or iPhone’s features from a far.  It also has a small and somewhat useless LCD that displays song info, an aux input and digital FM radio.

The inMotion Classic iMT620 will be available this month for $149.95.

Following in the foot steps of Griffin’s PowerDuo Reserve battery packs, Kensington has introduced an iPod/iPhone charger that includes a battery pack. As you can the battery charges while your iPhone charges, which should some how insure that you always have backup power. Unlike Griffin’s offering, though, Kensington’s Dock Charger with Mini Battery pack isn’t quite as portable but might offer a slightly longer battery life (1000mAH).

This is the first I’ve heard of, or at least recall Lifeworks, but the recently founded company has just signed a licensing deal with iHome and from the looks of it they’re churning out some cool iPod integrated products.  I’m particularly fond of the iConnect Media keyboard, which also comes in a Mac specific flavor.  Integrated into the keyboard is an iPod dock with media controls and 2 rotating USB ports.  It’s not exactly ground breaking, but it certainly does look svelte and sexy.  Also of note is their iStand Notebook Media Center, which is just brand speak for a notebook stand with an iPod dock, speakers, 2 USB ports and touch sensitive volume controls.  The complete line will launch sometime this summer and cost $149.99 and $299.99 respectively.

Onkyo pushed out two new products today that should receive an underwhelming response: the UP-A1 dock and charger for the iPod and the UP-HT1 HD Radio tuner.  The UP-HT1 HD Radio tuner hooks up to an Onkyo receiver and provides it, and you guessed it, HD radio.  The UP-A1 dock allows users to dock and charge their iPod while listening to it through their Onkyo compatible receiver.  The dock also enables the iPod to be controlled via the receiver’s included remote.

The  UP-A1 dock will be available this May for $109, while the UP-HT1 will be available in July for $159.

Here’s a company you might not of heard of: LiveSpeakR.  They produce one product: an iPod/iPhone compatible portable speaker system.  Two grilled speakers flank the dock on either side and tucked neatly at the center is a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery and flip out stand.  At first glance, the LiveSpeakR doesn’t warrant a double take but after plugging in my Gen 1 iPhone I can honestly say I’m a convert.

Don’t be misled by the LiveSpeakR’s tiny size, this thing can produce some serious sound.  But before we get there let me tell you a bit about its feature set.

Front and center of the LiveSpeakR is an unusual docking system that smoothly accepts my iPhone into its clutches and works surprisingly well given its odd aesthetic.  Rotating the dock 90 degrees into landscape mode resulted in the speakers automatically extending beyond the iPhones length allowing the speakers to continue to emit sound unobstructed.  A little odd but smart as this allows the LiveSpeakR to be used in both orientations: landscape for movies or portrait mode for music. Instead of utilizing the standard ‘made for iPod’ 30-pin dock, LiveSpeakR opted for a simple headphone jack, which not only works with the Gen 1 iPhone and iPod Touch, but makes it compatible with other MP3 players on the market.  The rechargeable Lithium battery placed squarely behind the dock, that not only centers the device’s weight but doubles as a stand thanks to the included flip out, height adjustable mount.

To charge the device I used the included A/C USB adapter that features an LED light that goes from red to green when charging is complete.  Because of this, you can charge the LiveSpeakr via your PC or the wall, which ever you prefer, but charging via a USB means no indicator light since that is built-in to the wall adapter. LiveSpeakR specs the battery at a 16 hours and during my testing I achieved nothing shy of this. A small and some what recessed switch powers the device on and off, and a small green LED light indicates when it’s powered up.  It’s pretty easy to leave the LiveSpeakR on when not in use due to the small size of the LED power light, but a some what moot point considering it can be charged up in just over 2 hours time.

So how does this bad boy sound?  Well, as previously mentioned, I had my doubts when I removed it from the box.  It’s size, shape and look doesn’t scream crystal clear sound let alone volume.  Boy was I wrong.  At max amplitude on my iPhone the LiveSpeakR produced absolutely no distortion and its body showed no signs of vibration.  Its sound is bright, full and clear as the recession in sight.  Setting my iPhone’s EQ to Latin resulted in the best sound regardless of the type of music being played.  And thanks to the LiveSpeakR’s shielded speaker system I experienced ZERO GSM signal noise from my iPhone during playback, which will surely prove useful for Pandora fans.

My only gripe, or perhaps apprehension is how long the rotating dock system will last.  One wrong spin or over turn could result in a breakage.  Although I didn’t incur any problems with the spinning dock I figured it’s worth mentioning for those considering a purchase.

The LiveSpeakR is most certainly not a desktop replacement, although it sounds as good as some larger systems, but it’s a perfect bed side or beach trip companion. At $100 a pop you might have wallet apprehension, but I assure you this portable speaker of joy will have your grinning from ear to ear with amazement, because yes, good things do come in small packages.

• Headphone plug so works with any MP3 player
• Flip out stand

Cons:

• Rotating dock seems a bit fragile
• Fiddly power switch
• Expensive

Computer speakers and iPod docks are a dime a dozen these days.  The Focal XS however merges the two and brings what is NOT the most innovative of products to the desktop, but at the very least a slick and aesthetically pleasing format.  Contained in the base of one of the two speakers is an iPod dock with a set of buttons for controlling power and volume and some sort of USB sound card.  The 6.5-inch powered sub kicks out the lows and the credit card sized remote enables long distance control of play/pause and track forward/back.

For $600, though, it’s one expensive way to crank your computer’s (or iPod’s) tunes and sync your contact info.  You can get them at Amazon.

Following on the squeals of the iPig, Speakal released the iBoo iPod speaker system today.  Reminiscent of a ghost (I’d like to think Casper) the iBoo is a bit lighter in the toes that its animal brethren and offers less speakers and power; 3 speakers and 15watts to be exact.  As always Speakal has tossed in a remote and ironically ‘humanized touch controls’.

The iBoo is available now in red, white or blue for $90.

It would probably be impossible to go a week without some sort of iPod or Apple news rolling out. With that said, I introduce you to the MP3 Mirror.  It’s a ‘music diffusion’ system that I presume turns your entire mirror into a speaker, and includes an iPod dock and LED lights to set the mood.  The MP3 Mirror can be retrofitted to any mirror with a steel frame.

The linked translation of the soon to be released Marantz IS301 iPod Dock is all but clear, but one things for sure: the iPod dock’s hay day has come and gone. This abundantly large device uses the magic of Bluetooth to wirelessly transmit video and audio to your home’s gear. Its got a whole mess of ports, which includes component, S-Video and even RJ45 (not sure what those are for) and isn’t officially compatible with the iPhone. I was under the impression that streaming video over Bluetooth wasn’t feasible considering the bandwidth of the wireless protocol, but perhaps pictures and music are the intention.

The somewhat antiquated Marantz IS301 iPod Dock is due out January 09 and will be hitting Japanese retailers for ¥26,250 or $277 US. Maybe then we’ll get some clarity on this thing.
