Transparent LCDs will be hitting the market in mass very soon. While the tech won’t apply to the standard consumer, they’ll be utilized largely for product displays since a physical object can sit behind the screen and still be visible while images and graphics are displayed in front of it.

Word is that Samsung’s 22-inch transparent display has gone into mass production, which uses 90% less energy than a standard LED display and boasts a 1680×150 resolution, 500:1 contrast ratio, USB and HDMI inputs.

Will the iPhone 5 have a larger screen? Seems logical, right?

According to a Chinese site that resells iPhone parts this is the iPhone 5′s digitizer panel. It took us a sec, but look closely and you’ll notice that the edges, or borders, have been reduced; less black. While official measurements aren’t available, it’s purported that it might measure 4-inches diagonally, a .5-inch increase over the current iPhone, which sports a 3.5-inch screen.

To add some additional perspective on the matter, the iPhone has faced increased competition from the vast array of Android phones on the market that sport up to a 4.3-inch screen, such as the EVO 4G and a few other handsets. So yes, it’s seems like a logical move on Apple’s part to increase the iPhone’s screen size. But on the other hands Apple has made battery life a paramount concern and increasing the display’s size would inevitably decrease battery performance, unless of course they can offset that caveat with a slightly larger battery.

We can help but emphasis that this is pure conjecture, so feel free to weigh-in on the comments and let us know your thoughts.

Holy shit! It looks like Steve Jobs pulled a quick one during yesterday’s iPhone 4 unveiling. Steve said that the iPhone’s screen has improved from 163 ppi to 326 ppi; their new Retina display. The only problem is that his slides and the new iPhone ad show a number that is up to almost 3x the actual working device.

George Ou discovered this after he got a ‘feeling that something wasn’t right’. He reviewed Steve’s presentation, which demonstrated the clarity of text found on the new iPhone’s screen. Using some mathematical wizardry, which isn’t clear to me and nor can I verify, he says that the slide depicted a screen resolution of 815ppi, almost 3 times the new iPhone. Additionally, the new iPhone ad (above) shows the screen sporting a 489ppi, which is more than 100ppi over the claimed spec. This one is a bit easier to digest since George’s pixel box clearly shows the benchmark that Apple set with their first screen. Stil skeptical? George also goes on to show what a 2x and 4x improvement looks like. See, it’s actually 4x the improvement, not two, which is really how much the iPhone 4′s screen has improved over the last iteration of the device.

It is possible that Apple understated the reoslution of the old iPhone in these screens, but in either case it’s a blatant exaggeration on the part of Apple. I’m an Apple fan, but where does it stop? Their battery claims are also vastly exaggerated and don’t even get me started when it comes to 3G connectivity speeds.

This is an interesting technology concept. The ACM Symposium has unveiled a video showing a laptop that can extend its display onto an adjacent table or surface. From there, lots of new workflow opportunities could open up. I don’t think we’d see tech like this for at least couple more years, but it sounds pretty cool to me. Check it out for yourself.

This is a big week for Apple: of course, the iPad is coming out Saturday, but they’ve also been filing some new patents that are popping up online. One such patent is for a head-mounted display system that communicates with a portable device — like the iPhone, duh. The device would allow a higher-res display within the eyepiece and open up new types of apps for the device (they’re thinking augmented reality, GPS directions and the like). Or you could control your Mac with it. That’d be useful.

The patent offers other details like the types of potential headset materials, applications, and mounting designs. But all this is conjecture right now. Knowing Apple, though, when something finally comes out with this technology it’s probably going to be game-changing. I can’t wait.

Parallax Barrier Displays — I’m not sure what it means, but it sounds cool and futuristic. Electronics maker Sharp has been working on them in 3.4-inch, 480×854 displays, to be exact. They allow 3D images to be viewed without glasses, thanks to a special series of vertical slits that can go into ordinary LCDs.

The previously posted Nintendo 3DS is going to be utilizing the same sort of ‘no glasses needed’ technology, so it only makes sense that they’d be using the Sharp screens. Nothing is confirmed yet, though. But I’m definitely looking forward to seeing this tech in action.

In the past few years, we’ve gone from keyboards and buttons to touchscreens, a fact that some people are still getting used to. Now, we may get rid of the touching altogether. The MIT Media Lab has created a motion screen computer that senses light and movement from the person in front of it, which can be translated into inputs onscreen. Ramesh Rakar, an MIT professor, says the LCD screen would be both emitting and receiving light, being able to display information while accepting inputs. Maybe things will be all “Minority Report” sooner than we thought.

There are more than enough novel gadgets circulating this blogosphere, but before you say “cockypot, I have had enough”, checkout the ‘USB Gadget Display’. Powered by USB alone, the 1.5-inch screen is compatible with many today’s Windows based gadgets/widgets, such as Facebook and Twitter. The color maxes out at 16 bits and its only compatible with Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista, but hey, it’s just $30.

Sony’s had their struggles with R&D, as evidenced by the failed Mini Disc and UMD formats. Now it looks the behemoth has plans to release a prototype spherical like display that could achieve massive fanfare or be lost in the annals of obscurity.

While I’m not sure what the practical applications could be – I suppose a digital photo frame that could be viewed from 360 degrees would work – the idea of being able to view an image from any angle (yes porn), no matter where you stand is pretty captivating…and without any special glasses.

Specs include a 13×27-cm device with 24-bit color image measuring just 96×128 pixels. Small yes, but remember that this is a prototype and supposedly they’ve got plans to show it off at the Tokyo Digital Content EXP0 2009 this coming Thursday. I just wonder if the tech can ever be cheap enough to end up in my home’s living room (or bedrooms).

Pictured above is supposedly Barnes and Noble’s e-reader. While specs and a wireless carrier have yet to be announced, or leaked in this case, rumor has it that it has an e-ink display on the top 3/4 of the device for reading magazines and books, while the lower quarter is a color LCD screen that will not only be good for perusing book covers but will double as a touchscreen keyboard or mutlitouch surface.

Perhaps a 3G carrier isn’t in the works and that’s why they now offer free WiFi at all their locations.

HP is dropping mutitouch displays like it’s hot. The biggest of the 4 announced today is the LD4200tm, which measures 42-inches and produces a full HD picture at 1920×1080. To keep costs down on this massive touch display, they opted for a combination of infrared and imaging sensors, forgoing the costly capacitive technology. To make all this magic happen, though, you’ll need to plug it into a computer via USB, while the screen’s imagery will be displayed by HDMI. Other specs include a 9ms response time, 3000:1 contrast ratio and 500 cd/m2 brightness.

Expect the LD4200tm to show up in public environments and cost about $2,800.

I was just perusing Amazon when I noticed an announcement on their home page stating that they’ve dropped the price of the Kindle from $299 to $259. What’s more interesting, though, is the addition of the Kindle International, which demands a $20 premium over the now cheaper Kindle but includes the ability to download books in over 100 countries. Otherwise, it’s the same old Kindle.

The International Kindle will ship October 19th, but they’re taking preorders starting today.

The door peep hole has been around since pretty much the dawn of, well, doors, and it really hasn’t changed all that much. And if your peep hole is anything like mine you can’t make the post man from a man with a post. The Peephole Viewer replaces your preexisting analog version and provide a crisp digital screen that even allows you to zoom in on your subjects. Installation just requires you to remove your existing peep hole, install a mount and soon you can see all your friends, or foes on its 2.5-inch LCD. It takes two AA batteries which are good for up to 1700 views and the screen will turn itself off after 10 seconds of inactivity.

I’m still not sold on the whole OLED experience, at least as far as home entertainment goes. Although, I do believe it’s a great piece of tech for the portable gadget market since it’s light on power consumption and boasts a stunning picture; laptops included.

So pardon mean when I don’t sound too excited about LG’s announcement to bring their 15-inch OLED screen to Korea this November with other markets following sometime in early 2010. While this set does trump the competition in terms of size, it does make me wonder how much it will cost since Sony’s 11-inch XEL-1 is currently listed at a whopping $2,500.

LCD monitor announcements don’t exactly capture headlines, but LG’s latest has got my head turning. The W53 SMART series incorporates a number of features that might just become a must in other brands monitors to come. Rounding out the top of the list is an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the screens brightness according to the room, a Cinema Mode that some how blacks out everything but the onscreen video and a gimmicky yet possibly useful timer to let you know when you should take a break. Adding to the W53′s whimsical qualities is also a proximity sensor that illuminates the display’s buttons, a feature that both isn’t necessary and will add cost.

The LG W53 SMART series will available in sizes from 18.5 to 27-inches, include a 2ms response time, 50,000:1 contrast ratio and will ship this April for a yet to be disclosed price.

Fujitsu Begins On-Line Consumer Sales of World’s First Color E-Paper Mobile Terminal FLEPia
- Displays up to 260,000 colors; features Bluetooth and high-speed wireless LAN; thin and lightweight -
Tokyo and Kawasaki, Japan, March 18, 2009 – Fujitsu Frontech Limited and Fujitsu Laboratories Limited today announced the start of consumer sales in Japan of the world’s first color e-paper mobile terminal, FLEPia, available for purchase from today through Fujitsu Frontech’s online store “FrontechDirect”. Developed by Fujitsu Frontech and Fujitsu Laboratories, FLEPia is the first ever mobile information terminal to feature color electronic paper (color e-paper). In addition to being lightweight and thin, the color e-paper mobile terminal features an easy-to-view 8-inch display screen capable of showing up to 260,000 colors in high-definition, in addition to being equipped with Bluetooth and high-speed wireless LAN. FLEPia is also power-efficient, enabling up to 40 hours of continuous battery operation when fully charged, and does not require power for continuous display of a screen image, consuming power only during re-draw. Featuring significant storage capabilities, when used with a 4GB SD card, the color e-paper terminal can store the equivalent of 5,000 conventional paper-based books when each book is 300 pages long at 600KB per book, thus being environmentally friendly.　In Japan, FLEPia can now be easily ordered from Fujitsu Frontech’s online store. As an additional option, through Fujitsu Frontech’s dedicated website, FLEPia users can purchase e-books from the largest e-book online retailer in Japan and download the e-books directly into FLEPia. As the only color e-paper mobile terminal commercially available, FLEPia offers a convenient, paper-free and eco-conscious enriched innovative mobile reading experience to users.

Figure 1: Fujitsu’s color e-paper mobile terminal FLEPia
Larger View
Background
Fujitsu Frontech and Fujitsu Laboratories co-developed proprietary color e-paper, and announced the launch of FLEPia in April 2007 as the world’s first color e-paper mobile terminal. Previously, commercial samples of FLEPia were available for purchase on a limited basis for corporate use only, as part of field trials of the first ever color e-paper mobile terminal. Compared to the FLEPia commercial samples which were used in field marketing, the latest FLEPia offers 1.5 times higher brightness and greater contrast, enabled through optimization of the color e-paper’s optical properties. Re-draw speed was also enhanced by 1.7 times. In addition to previously available high-speed wireless LAN, FLEPia is equipped with Bluetooth, enabling users to easily download and access various content from nearly any desired location.

Top of Page
Key Features
1. Lightweight, thin and high-performance: 8-inch screen displays up to 260,000 colors in high-definition
Weighing just 385 grams (385g) and only 12.5mm thick, FLEPia is lightweight and easily portable, while offering an easy-to-view 8-inch screen. Featuring world-leading color e-paper technologies, the mobile display terminal enables users to view a multitude of documents and images in high-definition at 768 dots x 1,014 dots (XGA), with up to 260,000 displayable colors (4,096-color and 64-color display is also possible, if desired).
2. Power-efficient color e-paper; enables up to 40-hour continuous battery operation
As the color e-paper employed displays text or images by reflecting external light, FLEPia does not require power to maintain screen display, consuming power only during re-draw (power consumption is approximately just 1/50 that of standard notebook PCs under similar usage conditions). When fully-charged, FLEPia offers up to 40 hours of continuous battery operation (conditions: display of 2,400 pages at 1 page per minute with 64 colors).
3. Feature-rich external interface (Japan: Bluetooth, high-speed wireless LAN)
Equipped with Bluetooth in addition to high-speed wireless LAN, FLEPia offers dial-up connection via various Japanese mobile carriers, thus enabling easy download of content featuring images and text (excluding audio and video content) from nearly any desired location. Also included as standard features are a USB mini-B connector supporting USB2.0 (480Mbps) and a SD memory card slot. Stereo speakers (embedded) offer audio playback of e-books, including picture books.
4. User-friendly operation: touch screen, digital stylus, scroll key, function buttons
A touch screen featured on the 8-inch display screen, along with a digital pen, enables easy operation of FLEPia. Also included are a scroll key and 6 function buttons, enabling users to freely and quickly implement commands on the screen in all 4 directions (up, down, left, right), as desired.
5. Two e-book viewers included as standard features (XMDF and .book formats)
Two popular e-book viewers widely used on PCs or mobile phones in Japan – “BunkoViewer” (XMDF format; “bunko” refers to “library” in Japanese) and “T-Time” (.book format) are included as standard features. These e-book viewers enable downloaded e-books to be easily read with FLEPia. The e-book viewers offer an enriched reading experience compared to conventional paper-based reading, enabling readers to jump from the table of contents to desired sections and freely enlarge or shrink text or images. A vast number of e-book sites are currently available on the Internet, and a wide range of approximately 20,000 Japanese e-books in either XMDF or .book format can be downloaded with FLEPia (see “Content Storage Capacity” under Specifications).
6. Equipped with Windows CE5.0 (Japanese version)
In addition to the content browser, Microsoft’s Windows CE5.0 (Japanese version) enables use of an internet browser, e-mail, and various software on FLEPia. Microsoft’s Office can also be used to generate text documents, spreadsheets, or presentations, making it possible to view a variety of documents – including e-mail file attachments – while in transit or in the field and away from an office environment, thus fully maximizing FLEPia’s multiple functions as a mobile information terminal. In terms of text input, a software keyboard and digital stylus make it possible to send e-mails and other text.

Top of Page
Dedicated customer-support website offers technical support, maintenance, software upgrades (Japan)
Fujitsu Frontech will offer a dedicated customer-support site, FLEPia World, on its Japanese website. FLEPia World will offer product information to potential customers considering purchase of FLEPia, in addition to technical and maintenance support to FLEPia users. Software upgrades will be offered free-of-charge.
Furthermore, customers will have the option of purchasing e-books through the FLEPia World website via Japan’s largest e-book online retailer – offered through a collaboration between the retailer PAPYLESS CO.,Ltd. and Fujitsu Frontech – and downloading the e-books directly onto FLEPia.

Call me narrow minded, but a double sided display has one good use: advertising. Unlike PIP, or split screen, it won’t solve any TV related sibling fights, or quell the Sunday football versus HGTV dispute. Current max resolution for the 15-inch monitor is 512×384 with a messily 14:1 contrast ratio. Ok, I take it back. It would make for a killer art installation.

Too bad I don’t have the ‘double sided’ part in action
