Boxee Box is about to get a little bit better thanks to a small device called the Boxee Live TV.  It plugs into the Boxee Box (the one made by D-Link – this won’t work with your PC or Mac) and allows you to navigate and watch terrestrial HD broadcasts such as NBC, CBS, FOX and more right on the device.

The Boxee Box from D-Link, the official HTPC that promises to run Boxee and 1080p streaming content for an affordable price, has been delayed until November. The news hit from Avner Ronen, Boxee’s CEO, amidst anticipation for what was supposed to be a release of the box around this time. Part of the delay seems to be the company’s promise of smooth HD playback — something highly dependent on the recently released Flash 10.1. Pricing for the Boxee Box is currently unavailable, but updates about the status of the device’s release will be on their official blog as the November release approaches.

I guess it was just a matter of time until Boxee announced their own hardware.  Although the Boxee Box – yup, that’s the name – press release is devoid of specs, it’s pretty clear that this thing will stream music and video directly to your television sans computer.  What we do know is that it has a few video connectivity options (HDMI, SPDIF, RCA Audio) to choose from in addition to 2x USB ports, WiFi (802.11n) and wired Ethernet.   The Boxee Box, which is built by D-Link, should go on sale Q2 of 2010 for about $200 and will include an RF remote.

In front of a packed house at their Boxee Beta Unveiling event in Brooklyn this evening, Boxee revealed that D-Link has been named first choice as the hardware partner to release a Boxee branded device for the living room.

Boxee is the best way to enjoy content from the Internet or a computer on a TV screen. With the Boxee Box™ by D-Link®, the two companies have created the easiest way to bring this experience into the living room, allowing people to watch tens of thousands of movies & TV Shows, organize and play their favorite home movies and photos, and play great music from their home network or from Internet sources like Pandora.

“By pairing Boxee’s innovative social entertainment platform with D-Link’s technology we’re able to create a solution that introduces people to what TV should be. Additionally, Boxee’s core social features make it easy for friends to discover new content from each other through social networks like Facebook, Twitter and more.

The Boxee Box will be available through D-Link’s network of etail and retail outlets in the first half of 2010. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is still undetermined.

Boxee may have officially removed Hulu support (even though you can get the hookup via RSS), but for the die hard fans out there you’ll be pleased to hear that they’ve released an iPhone app.  It works over your network’s WiFi and let’s you control Boxee in two ways:  gesture and button mode.  As their description states, button mode is pretty self-explanatory, but gesture mode, well, just read what they said below.  I’m assuming it works with more than just an Apple TV, right?

• the boxee remote app has two modes: Gesture and Buttons
• in the Gesture mode you need to hold down your thumb and move it around in order to navigate.
• clicking on the boxee logo acts as Select/Play/Pause
• dragging the boxee logo to the edges of the screen will act as a continuous up/down/left/right
• clicking in an input field will open up the iPhone Qwerty keyboard and will enable you to easily enter text
• the app works over WiFi, so make sure the WiFi on your iPhone is turned on

Rejoice all you Boxee and Hulu fans, the new version of Boxee supports video-optimized RSS feeds from Hulu, Google Video, Yahoo!, YouTube, and many others. The Hulu RSS support is not as polished as the original Hulu app but, hey, nothing to complain about here–just the fact that it’s now supported is tremendous. • App Box- this is a first take at an application “store” that makes it easy for users to install new apps and plugins. there is also native support for 3rd party repositories, so you don’t have to rely on boxee as a gatekeeper for what goes into the official boxee app store. for example, you can add dir.boxeehq.com as a repository to get access to all the boxeehq.com apps.
• auto update- long time in the making and really bad form on our part for not having it from the beginning. but better later than never. no need to check on Twitter or our blog to know that there is a new version. now you’ll be prompted to update boxee whenever there is a new release ready.

Keep in mind this is a bleeding edge alpha version so expect some bugs and glitches. Also, Ubuntu/Linux fans are sadly left in the dark for this one.

In a sad bit of news, Boxee is removing their much beloved Hulu support at the request of content providers. A specific reason was not given but I imagine it all boils down to one thing. Actually, most everything these days boils down to one thing: the love of money. Pretty sad really and the ones who are losing out are the users. We can only hope this doesn’t turn into a trend.

Just wanted to emphasize from my last post that Boxee is now supporting online videos from ABC. Yup, this means you can watch Lost or any of their shows through Boxee’s elegant and efficient user interface.

At this point it’s only available on the Mac so all you AppleTV/Linux/Windows users will have to wait (sucks doesn’t it?). Download here if you have a Boxee account and Mac.

After being approached by several companies at CES, Boxee is considering embedding their excellent media software into a dedicated, standalone media box. I’m sure Boxee CEO Ronen has several issues to consider which is why he’s asking for your opinion over at the Boxee blog.

After testing Boxee for a while now, I can tell you that it has huge potential, especially with the recent addition of Abc’s online video service (for all you Lost fans). It has an excellent user interface, support for just about every audio/video media format, integration with major online video sites such as Netflix, Hulu (list is ever growing), and social networking features. All this in a dedicated box specifically tuned for Boxee? I say, heck ya.

The AppleTV 2.3 update killed Boxee, but the chaps on the forums figured out how to get it back on. Takes a bit of work but it doesn’t seem too bad if you follow these instructions. For those of you not in the know, Boxee is an awesome open source multimedia center that turns your AppleTV (or PC) into the ultimate entertainment center.
