Generally speaking, a good pair of on ear headphones will outperform any pair of ear buds thanks to the fact that they can house much bigger drivers, which in turn produce more bass and a wider spectrum of sound.  However, one major caveat to these types of headcans, is that they can become uncomfortable after prolonged use. Bose’s OE2is are anything but and produce superior sound without weighing down your noggin.

The Bose OE2is were announced this October and while they cost as much as Bose’s on ear headphones, they’re lighter, more nimble and  as far as I can tell don’t make any sacrafices in audio quality despite their smaller size.

Available in black or white, there are two models to choose from. The OE2is, which I tested, include an inline mic and audio controls, where as the OE2s lack this feature.  Unfortunately, Bose hasn’t told us what size drivers they’ve used, but I do know they’ve incorporated something called “TriPort technology” as well as “Bose acoustic equalization.”  According to Bose, Triport Tech, which is proprietary, provides tonally balanced audio with deep low notes, where as Bose equalization fine tunes the frequency response, which sounds a bit redundant, but let’s not split hairs.

What Bose has made clear, though, is that the OE2s include memory foam ear cushions – the same stuff found in pillows and the Posterpedic mattresses.  This is evident by just pressing on the ear cushions, but nothing is a better testament to this feature than the comfort of the OE2s, which is superior to any other pair of headphones that I’ve tested.  Generally speaking, after wearing a pair of headphone for just under an hour my ears begin to ache from the pressure.  However, I can easily adorn the Bose O2Eis for a few hours before having to take a break.  But I can’t attribute all this comfort to the memory foam inserts.  I can also thank the light weight build and the ability to adjust the headband to a rather large setting, which allowed me to shift around the placement of the headphones enough to alleviate some of the pressure on my ears.

In terms of calls on the OE2is, I was nothing short of impressed.  In a loud coffee shop environment my callers made no complaints about background noise, and to be completely candid, it was a nice change of pace to go from taking calls on what usually are a set of ear buds.  Keep in mind, though, that since these headphones block out more ambient sound – not as much as a pair of on ear headphones, but enough in most scenarios – it will be a somewhat unorthodox experience taking and making phone calls since it’s tougher to hear your own voice.

Now, when you get your Bose OE2is make sure, like any pair of headphones to break them in for a few hours before maxing out the volume.  I did this for about 10 hours and they went from sounding good to sounding fantastic.  The Bose OE2is have no problem delivering a full spectrum of sound, something that I’ve only experienced in much larger headphones.  But it’s not just the spectrum that is impressive, but the tonal accuracy and fidelity that they can achieve.  Bass, which on its own isn’t an accurate representation of a good pair of headphones, can be heard in the most subtle of audio scenarios, even when their is a heavy mix of mids and highs.  To put it plainly, these headphones are very well balanced and rival larger headphones in the same price range.

Suffice to say, but the Bose OE2is are nothing short of impressive.  Sonically they performed above and beyond their class and are easily the most comfortable on ear headphones that I’ve had the pleasure of testing.  They don’t boast Bose Active Noise cancellation, but that is reflected in their size and price tag, which is $179.95, or $149.95 without the iPhone controls and mic.

Bottom Line: Great sounding, lightweight on ear headphones.

Bose has a new set of headphones, the OE2i and the OE2. They’re both identical in the specs department, though the OE2i includes an inline mic designed to work specifically with the iPhone.

The OE2s are smaller and lighter than Bose’s original on ear headphones and use memory foam – the same stuff found in pillows – ear cushions to mold to your ears. They’ve incorporated their TriPort acoustic headphone structure, which Bose says delivers big sound in a small form factor, and Bose acoustic equalization that supposedly fine tunes the frequency response. Ultimately, the O2Es should sound good and not over encumber your dome.

A detachable cord that attaches to one ear cup should minimize tangling, while a fold flat design means that you can stuff the OE2s into a bag without adding too much bulk.

The OE2is are specifically designed for the iPhone, so you’ll be able to switch between calls and music, control tracks, volume, change playlists and more using the integrated controller on the back of the mic.

Bose must be nuts, but we already knew that.  They’re asking $2,500 for their newest sound bar system, the Lifestyle 135.

It includes a wireless subwoofer, remote, iPod dock and a wall mountable speaker that fabricates full surround sound.  The remote connects via RF so you can increase or decrease the volume despite not having line of sight to the system.  The wireless subwoofer is a nice touch as well, since you can hide it in a closest, provided of course you’ve got a plug near by.

The Lifestyle 135 is designed to work with up to 6 devices and even upscales DVD players or any video device that doesn’t put out a 1080p signal.  We’re talking 4 HDMI connections and 2 HD audio inputs.  There is also an FM/AM radio.

Inside the Soundbar is Bose’s Flexmount and ADAPTiQ tech.  Flexmount determines if the soundbar is placed on a table or mounted on a wall, which automatically adjusts the audio accordingly.  ADAPTiQ anaylyzes the room’s dimensions and interior, and calibrates the speaker to its acoustics.  So we half expect, based on this tech, that it can produce top notch sound for movies and music.

Despite the fact that Bose is over priced gear, there is no disputing how simple their systems are to setup.  To streamline the installation process Bose has integrated a step-by-step visual walk through that appears directly on the TV screen.  Not the biggest takeaway by any account in terms of its feature set, but a nice addition nonetheless.

Jawbone’s Jambox totally caught us off guard.  Before listening to the diminutive device we had already decided that it couldn’t possibly produce awesome sound.  Boy were we wrong.  So that’s why we’re reserving judgement on Bose’s Soundlink Mobile, a Bluetooth, battery powered speaker (it can also be plugged in).

While the design leaves something to be desired – it looks oh so circa 1980s – it does sport four midrange drivers and two dual-opposing woofers that are placed opposite each other to provide full-range bass performance.   It measures 5″ x 9.5″ x 2″, and weighs less than three pounds.

You can pair up to 6 Bluetooth devices with the portable speaker, though they can’t connect simultaneously and you’ll need to disconnect the first device in order to add a new one.  Unfortunately, there is no AirPlay support.

As far as we can tell there is no hidden microphone for taking calls, but Bose has incorporated an Apple like Smartcover that magnetically adheres to the front of the speaker and automatically powers it off.

According to Bose the built-in battery will last up to 3-4 hours at max volume, or 8 hours at a “normal level.”  Unlike the Jambox the battery is user replaceable, and the box has been ruggedized for added durability.

We’re not sure on a release date, but the cheapest model will sell for $299, while the premium version will fetch $349 and include chrome detailing and a leather cover.

Bose, the high end audio company, is making a partial switch from elite headphones to premium video systems. The Bose Video Wave, costing a very self conscious $5,349, is made up of four pieces.  A 46 inch LCD TV with 1080p resolution, a console that takes care of ALL your connectivity needs, the necessary iPod dock and a remote control.

But the selling point of the Video Wave isn’t the video itself, although it is adequate, even good. This being Bose, it’s the audio that impresses, and if you buy this system you likely won’t be needing any extra speakers – the TV itself takes care of the audio brilliantly, in surround sound. Inside the unit there are 16 speakers and six subwoofers, with enough oomph to set your living room ablaze with high quality sound. A technology called PhaseGuide gives sound a directional quality, it seems to come not from the speakers, but from whatever part of the room the speakers are pointing to.

Remember that Bose press event we told you about earlier this week?  Well, it went down in NYC today and they announced their newest noise canceling headphones, the QuietComfort 15.  Form factor wise they pretty much mimic the Quiet Comfort 2s, but offer improved noise cancellation.  Those who attended the press event were invited to listen to a 90db airplane recording with the noise cancellation activated and deactivated.  So far the reports seem to be unanimous, stating that they have vastly improved upon the noise cancellation; “noticeable more so than with the previous version of Bose headphones, the QC2″.  The QuiteComfort 15s will go on sale tomorrow and cost $300.

Bose is set to introduce a new product on August 19th according to a press invite sent out to select media.  What it is unknown at this time, but the company is claiming it is their “best ever [in 30 years]“, which is bold to say the least.  Chances of it being an iPod related product are good, but would you want your claim to 30 years of fame to hinge on another brand?

A speaker that doesn’t need anything to produce sound?  Well, sort of.  Bose has recently announced the release of their SoundLink speaker system. This new system uses a USB dongle to transmit your computer’s music (or compatible device) wirelessly to the speaker setup.

It has a built-in Lithium ion battery that can play at full volume for a maximum of 3 hours and you can crank up the speaker using the included remote control or just use the buttons on the speaker itself.

But here comes the bad part! On its official release date on August 27, the SoundLink will cost at around $550! Yeah I know, a lot of dreams have been shattered, including mine.  I sure hope that’s not going to be the final price tag because with that kind of sticker shock, I’d rather hang on to my cheaper WiFi speakers.
