There you are strolling home from the grocery store when you’re accosted by a thug looking to nab your meat and veggie. What’s a scared citizen to do? Enter the Brass Knuckle bag carrier. We don’t know where it hails from, how much it costs or if it’s a readily obtainable product. However, we do know that it will surely deliver a painful punch to the next unsuspecting criminal. Course, this assumes you know how to fight or at the very least throw a strong right cross.

3 out of 5 stars

Pros:

Solid construction

Built-in laptop slot with padding

Shoulder bag or brief case form factor makes it more versatile

Cons:

Tight on space and tight pockets; good for your laptop and a few small things

Terralinq tag is sharp to the touch

Not compatible (not enough space) with Booq’s laptop sleeves

The Mamba Catch Laptop bag comes in two sizes: small, which holds a 13-inch laptop or large, which holds up to a 15-inch laptop. The bag itself can probably best be described as a messenger bag meets laptop brief case. Inside is a separate padded pocket to protect your laptop and a variety of pockets for pens, some papers and other fiddly items that you might need to tote along with your laptop, such as an AC plug.

The outside of the bag is finished in Booq’s ballistic nylon. It’s water replant and smooth to the touch. There are a set of outside pockets, that while small, could fit a few USB cords or a pair of sunglasses sans case. There is a built-in handle for those looking for the more brief case approach as well as a shoulder strap for longer journeys, which can be stored out of the way in that back pocket or tucked away inside the pass through slip used for mounting the bag on to a pullman’s handle.

As I’ve experienced with all Booq bags, the construction is solid and should stand up to the test of time. They’ve included a Terralinq id tag in the event that the bag is lost and some honest citizen stumbles across your goods. Watch your hands though, as it’s easy to catch your knuckles on the sharply cut metal tag, which resulted, for me at least, in a small cut.

Don’t expect to carry around books as well as your laptop. This bag is tight on space, which is further reflected by its almost useless main outside pocket found on the front of the bag. The same applies for the side pockets.

The design of the bag calls for a curved pocket that unzips to expose the inside, allowing you to easily access your laptop or other items from above without obstruction. A caveat to this design is that the zipper is a bit difficult to close and takes some minimal wrestling to insure everything is secure. The picture above reflects the available pockets, but doesn’t convey how tight space becomes once a laptop is inserted directly behind it in the padded pocket.

While not the most versatile of bags, Booq’s Mamba Catch protects and transports your laptop in a grace and style that other bag bag manufacturers should strive for. But, for those of you looking to totes books and other large items I suggest you take a dance else where.

The Mamba Catch L can be purchased from an Amazon retailer for $145.99.

We’ve all been there: Jammed as much stuff as we could into our carry-on bag to avoid the baggage fee only to find out it’s too large to fit in the plane’s over head compartment.

With Balanzza’s TRUCO (Travel Utility Carry On) baggage system, though, that issue should be a thing of the past. It’s a carry-on bag that can “reshape itself” by offering 2 modular parts that can be removed or added using Balanzza’s click-on system. The main bag is designed to hold your clothing and other larger items, while a laptop bag/brief case snaps onto the front of it. The third piece, which clips to the top of the main bag, is designed to hold smaller, more valuable items. In the event that you board the plane and discover that the overhead compartment is too small, you simply remove any of the two smaller bags and slip them under the seat or next to the bag in the over head compartment. Brill.

The Balanzza Truco has a Worldwide Limited 5-year Lifetime Warranty and is available now for $199.

Timbuk2 finally managed to squeeze into their product line a camera friendly bag called the Snoop. Perhaps the name is an attempt to appeal to paparazzi?

Inside you’ll find a padded lens and camera compartment, with enough room at the rear to stow what looks like a 13 to 15-inch laptop. The compartments are modular and can be reorganized according to your camera gear, or entirely removed to convert it into a classic messenger. The bottom of the bag sports a set of Velcro straps for carrying a tripod and the front three clear pockets for memory card storage.

The Timbuk2 Snoop has a waterproof TPU liner, which the company claims will keep your goods dry in a puddle or a drizzle. The outside is crafted of ballistic nylon, which in our experience lasts for years and years to come.

Timbuk2 currently says a small and medium size for $120 and $130 respectively. They’re avialable in cement/revlon red (small only), gun metal/limeade (medium only) and black/gun metal.

Booq Bags is back on the scene with the Cobra Courier XS. It’s designed specifically for the iPad with a perfectly sized padded pocket. Course you can stuff other crap in there, such as a charger, perhaps a slim and portable Bluetooth keyboard amongst other things.

It will set you back $145, which is far from cheap for a dedicated bag, but maybe you’ll take solace in the fact that it’s finished with 1680 denier ballistic nylon, some of the finest Nappa leather and gunmetal hardware.

As with all Booq Bags they’ve included, free of charge, a Terralinq serial number, which should reunite you and your goods if they get lost. But something tells me not too many people are gonna return a lost iPad.

If you ride a bicycle then you know hand signals can be highly ineffective at nighttime when it comes to notifying drivers of your intentions.

The SEIL bag concept could change all that. Embedded on the back of the bag are a set of LED lights that can be controlled by a handle bar mounted remote. When approaching a turn one just simply needs to flip the right turn signal and the right arrow will pop up on the back of the bag. Other commands are also included, such as a sudden stop button as well as a set of quirky caution symbols in case of an accident or if you’re walking along the side of the road with the bicycle.

This isn’t the first concept of this type that we’ve seen, so check out two other ones, one in which the same idea is embedded in a jacket.

Saddleback Leather Company’s Medium sized Satchel is a nice choice for a durable bag that’s just big enough for carrying around the essentials of day to day iPad use.

I’m a gadget geek. Which, by default, makes me a bag geek. After all, what kind of masochistic gadget fiend would spend their hard earned greenbacks on high quality toys just to leave them at home?!

NOT THIS ONE.

So when I added the iPad to my mobile computing arsenal I obviously needed a bag of appropriate size to haul it and some other essentials around with me. However, a typical laptop bag designed for a typical laptop just wouldn’t cut it for something like this. The whole point of the device (as far as I’m concerned) is to provide a portal to the world that’s convenient to the point of never needing to choose whether I’m bringing it somewhere. If my girlfriend allows it, it’s coming along. It’s as simple as that. Finally, in the interest of not drawing attention to my geekiness, I prefer a bag that doesn’t look like a gear bag. A bag designed exclusively for a netbook (while appropriately sized) is therefor out of the question. Here enters Saddleback Leather Co’s Medium Satchel.

Is it big enough? I can carry my iPad with me anywhere, and with a bag of this caliber, I’ll be doing it in style. It sounds cheesy, but I feel a little like Indiana Jones carrying this thing around. There’s plenty of room for an iPad (you’ll want a cover of some kind, I chose the Apple version), a smallish Bluetooth keyboard (again, the Apple one works, but keep an eye out for a review on an alternative option I’ll be posting soon), your charger, your keys, as well as a medium sized schoolbook of some variety.

Is it built well enough? I think so. In fact, here’s a selection of Saddleback build quality points, taken directly from the website:

Leather – Only thick Full Grain Leather that ages richly, not weaker Top Grain, Genuine or Bonded leather.

Tanning – Only expensive fully tanned leather (not partially tanned), so it won’t dry and crack in only a few years.

No Breakable Parts – No zippers, snaps, buttons or any other breakable parts. How much is a billion dollar submarine with a plastic hatch worth?

Industrial Thread – Stout, thick and expensive industrial marine grade UV resistant thread used for airbags, sails and work boots.

Hidden Nylon Reinforcing Straps – Nylon straps sewn inside the parts of leather that get the stress. Nylon doesn’t stretch.

Rivets – Any place that could ever come apart in 30 – 50 years, gets a rivet (even rocks wear away).

Suede or Pigskin Lining – We use durable suede or pigskin (football material) as lining, not delicate fabric.

Hardware – Nickel plated metal hardware normally used for dog collars and horse tack.

If there’s an exception to the phrase “they don’t make them like the used to,” it’d be these guys. They’re industrial strength, and backed up with a 100 year warranty. It wouldn’t be far off to suggest that it’s been constructed of old sailors and stegosaurus hide; you know… leathery things. It’s the sort of attention to detail that when my day-job-officemates saw it, the general response was one of awe and general admiration. The only side effect of this construction (and coincidentally the only downside I found) was that it makes the bag heavier than other bags it’s size. The fact that you’re carrying some of the lightest computing equipment currently on the market more than balances this out.

Want one yourself? Buy it here.

Pros:

100 year warranty

Super build quality

Definitely eye catching

Enough room for the basics of day to day iPad travel.

Cons

Heavier than other similar sized bags

Might not be enough room if you like to carry LOTS of other stuff.

Will require time to break in

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Booq Bags. I absolutely adore their Viper sleeve for the Macbook and settled on it after finding nothing quite like it on the market. So when I got word of a new line of bags I had to get my hands on one.

Enter the Mambe Shift Backpack. It can hold a 13″ to 17″ laptop and includes an accessory pouch to keep all your gear neatly tucked away. On the sides are two side pockets and like many if not of all Booq’s stuff is finished in durable ballastic nylon that has a water repellent coating.

So there isn’t much to tell when it comes to bag. But what I did notice is that the Mamba is great for toting around your laptop and your laptop alone. But before I get into the drawbacks of the Mamba I will say that the laptop pocket is easy to access and even fit my Vyper sleeve with ease. Alternatively, you could just toss your laptop in the bag sans case since the pocket is padded for your protection.

Now, back to the drawbacks. While the Mamba appears large in capacity it assure it is not. The side pockets could facility a water bottle and the middle pocket is roomy enough for a book or two, but that’s about it. With that said, don’t buy this bag for its cubic capacity. But do buy it for its durability and protection, surely a payoff most laptop carrying students and bloggers like myself can relate to. Besides, I don’t want a massive bag hanging off my back.

Aesthetically, the Mamba is pretty good looking. From a profile perspective I thought it was a bit bulky and no matter how much I tightened the shoulder straps it hung the same way. This can be attributed to the excessive amount of padding in the bag. Which probably means I could get hit by a bus and my laptop would be intact, where as I would not – catch my drift?

Pros:

Holds 13″ to 17″ laptops

Specific laptop pocket with good padding

Aesthetically cool

Cons:

Deceiving cubic capacity

Expensive

If you’re so inclined you can grab one through Amazon for $150.

I know, I know, USB beverage chillers are nothing new, but this one deserves some much needed attention since it comes in the form of a portable bag. That’s right, the bag itself is the chiller and can be powered by your computer’s USB port, bringing the bottles liquid all the way down to 14 degree F. 14 degrees? Is that right, or is it just the bag that reaches this temperature, not the liquid? If so, that means it’s beyond frozen, but hey, don’t shoot the messenger. What’s really neat, though, is that you can unplug it when you’re done chilling your liquid of choice and the bag, which is insulated, will keep your content chilled for time to come. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m thinking Stoli Vodka.

You can grab one for about $14, and that includes shipping.
