I may be the only musician that is a proficient guitar player but who really sucks at all things Rock Band and Guitar Hero.  I just played Beatles Rock Band a week or so ago and was just horrible.  Oddly enough, while I couldn’t make it through a song on guitar on medium, I did manage to complete one on the drums.

For anyone who has seen live music beyond the coffee house acoustic jam will have noticed speakers on the stage that face the musicians.  These are called monitors and they give the musician a sense of how they are sounding.

For $100 each, you can really outfit your living room like a live sound stage with as many of these as you can afford.  I guess Altec Lansing’s though was that 5.1 or even 2.1 sound can be sacrificed for the feeling you’ll get when you throw a leg up on one of these.

Altec Lansing announced the inMotion Classic iMT620 portable speaker dock for the iPhone and iPod this morning.  That stand you see actually doubles as a handle and can be swiveled down for a svelter more storage friendly form factor.  Inside the device is a 5 hour rechargeable battery as well as a remote cubby for storing the fully featured remote that allows you to control all your iPod’s or iPhone’s features from a far.  It also has a small and somewhat useless LCD that displays song info, an aux input and digital FM radio.

I think it might be fair to say that Altec Lansing has gone of the freakin’ reservation with their MIX Boombox.  While I appreciate is versatility and utilitarian approach, something about it seems so 80s to me.  Maybe its the word ‘boombox’, or the stylings of a time passed?

This beast includes a set of 5.25-inch side firing subwoofers, dual 1-inch tweeter, dual 3-inch mid range drivers and of course the quintessential iPod/iPhone dock.  Hidden on top is a slot for the carabiner inspired remote control and two 3.5mm input jacks for adding two more audio sources, or iPods as their marketing pictures depict.  Jamming in 8 D battery will get you up to 30 hours of continuous playback time and despite its rugged looks the MIX Boombox isn’t spec’d for the beach or any outdoor activity.

The MIX Boombox will be available this September for $299.95
