3 out of 5 stars

By now you might be familiar with the Chumby devices. If not, head over to our Chumby 1 review, which is the second iteration of the product. The Chumby 8 basically picks up where the company fell short and filled many of the proverbial holes that I experienced with the Chumby 1.

First off the screen is now much larger and more sensitive – it measures 8-inches. This makes it ideal for photos and easier to navigate the device since you don’t need the same finger point accuracy as found on the Chumby 1′s smaller screen. It sports a matte finish to help with glare and while it’s not a bastion of optical bliss, it suffices for photos and more. And speaking of which, Chumby has added a set of memory card slots to facilitate picture uploads from an SD, MMC or CF cards and there is also a USB slot.

Chumby has also outfitted it with a faster processor, which pretty much has removed the lag issues I experienced with the Chumby 1 when streaming Pandora. However, it’s not the speediest machine, especially when compared to today’s tablets, so expect to wait a second or two for things to load. In all fairness it doesn’t cost nearly as much as most tablet computers, so it’s not an accurate comparison, but nonetheless we tend have expectations regardless of price.

Users can now add apps directly on the device without having to resort to their computer, which is nice touch since this enables the device to be sold to a larger audience, though we don’t know anyone who doesn’t own a computer in this day and age. However, the app selection is limited and from what I can tell more are available if you do have a computer.

Chumby has cleaned up the UI significantly, which is made possible by the larger screen. There is now a full QWERTY keyboard when inputing any text. If you recall the Chumby 1 offered this, but it was smaller and not available for some reason when entering a security key to add WiFi.

They haven’t done much with the speaker setup, but like the previous iteration there is a headphone jack, and the built-in speaker will suffice for wake up alarms. At the top right corner is a button that both allows you to exit out of an app and control a background app, such as Pandora. I would have preferred if there was an option to simply touch the screen to bring up the current apps menu, as this would make for a more intuitive process.

The build quality of the Chumby 8 seems to be a step up when compared to the previous iteration. Furthermore, this version is slicker looking, but with that said it has lost some of its adorable, Chumby charm. In other words it no longer stands in a category all its own, and now falls under the same guise as an LCD photo frame.

So why the Chumby 8 over another touchscreen, Internet connected device? It’s a fair question and one I kept pondering while testing it. The larger screen is most certainly a big draw, especially for those who want to tap into a Facebook photos or other photo feeds. It’s also nice to have a wide array of apps at your disposal completely free of charge, though most probably won’t get used, even after downloading them. Which brings me to my point: the Chumby 8 is best served as a bedside companion or a means to stream Internet radio. You’ll never surf the web on it, check email or really do anything that it out right productive. Which brings me to my next point, price, which is $200. For a few hundred more you can score an Android tablet or a 1st gen iPad. Unfortunately, Chumby might be destined to go the same route of Flip camcorders, which were quickly displaced by smartphones thanks to their high end optics and more vast feature set.

Pros:

Large touchscreen; 8-inches

Relatively easy to use UI

Apps now accessible on the device itself

Cons:

Touch-resistive as opposed to capacitive touchscreen

No battery power

Requires a set of external speakers

The Chumby 8, Chumby’s latest alarm clock/app device showed up at our door step this week. We finally got around to an unboxing, which we assure you is nothing special. However, we did have a chance to play with the device before writing this post.

It looks better, sounds better, feels better and we’re confident if we could eat the Chumby 8 it would taste better than the last iteration, the Chumby One. Gone is the friendly bedside alarm clock foot print. The 3.5-inch screen has been replaced with a larger, more responsive, 8-inch 800×600 touchscreen. Thanks to the bigger screen the UI has been improved and is far cleaner. The processor has received an almost two fold speed bump from 454mhz to 800mhz and the RAM doubled to 128MB. This has resulted in a far speedier and more fluid user experience. Pandora sounds vastly better and there is now a more finger-friendly QWERTY keyboard that makes punching in stations a snap. Course, you still need to verify your Chumby before accessing Pandora, but once you do so you’ll also be able to add select apps to the device without the need for a computer, though your choices will be rather limited. Chumby has also added CF and SD card slot, making it ideal for viewing photos, though thanks to the WiFi tapping into your favorite photo sharing site is a no brainer. The 2W internal speaker is now in stereo – fortunately there is a headphone jack for adding your own speakers.

Expect a review soon, but if you can’t wait the Chumby 8 is available now for $199.99.

Chumby has just released the all new Chumby 8 and boy are we excited. We reviewed the Chumby One, but felt as though it left something to be desired, especially from a screen size and processor standpoint.

The new Chumby however sports a larger 8-inch screen, a faster processor (800MHz Marvell ARMADA 166) and twice the RAM (128 MB DDR2 SDRAM). But that’s not all. You can now upload photos to your favorite sharing sites from the Chumby and manage your apps (i.e. content) directly from the touchscreen device – before you had to log into a computer.

While they’ve added a mic, no doubt to support VoIP calls, they’ve removed the presence of the FM radio, at least according to the spec sheet, and a USB input for attaching a compatible MP3 player, such as an iPod. The form factor has also taken a notable change, reflecting that of a digital photo frame.

The new Chumby 8, which measures 8.7″ widex 6.75″ tall x 5.5″ deep, will ship April 5th for $199.95. You can preorder today.

Sony announced today some interesting changes to their popular line of VAIO P netbooks, making additions that truly blend the line between laptop and tablet and make the device more attractive in an increasingly diverse ultraportable market.

The 8-inch laptop, 1.4 pound laptop features a 1600×768 LED display, GPS, and 3G, but the unique features are what stand out: The built-in accelerometer allows for iPad-esque orientation switching for spreadsheets and documents. Touchpads situated on either side of the display (or “mobile nav grips” as the PR says) allow users to navigate the mouse and click in what Sony dubs “two-handed operation for standing or walking.” Also new are one-touch buttons that launch applications and adjust display settings — these include a web browser mode that doesn’t require a full boot into Windows 7, as well as easy resolution adjustment to keep text on that tiny screen legible. The VAIO P now comes in five colors with fancy adjectives to describe them: neon green, icy white, electric orange, hot pink, and classic black.

The VAIO P is available in June starting at $799.

MEDIA ALERT: NEW SONY VAIO P SERIES LIFESTYLE PC DAZZLES WITH VIBRANT COLORS AND ONE-TOUCH BUTTONS
Subject: Media Alert: VAIO P Series to Boast Bold Colors and New Touch Features

WHO: The new Sony VAIO® P Series features an array of built-in one-touch buttons that enable you to instantly access the web, adjust screen resolution and even tune-up your PC. A convenient trackpad built directly into the LCD bezel and a mobile nav grip have also been added making it easier than ever to access content on-the-go. Taking fashion to the next level, the P-Series is now available in five vibrant new colors – electric orange, neon green, hot pink, icy white and classic black.

WHAT: Measuring about the size of a business envelope and roughly as thin as a cell phone the P Series weighs in at just 1.4 pounds. It integrates full PC features so users can edit documents, watch online videos, and organize photos all with an ultraportable design.

◦ The new PC features one-touch buttons providing convenient shortcuts with just a click.
• Press the WEB button, and this Instant mode option launches directly into your browser. You can even press it when the PC is turned off and it will launch you into your web browser without a full boot through the Windows® operating system.
• The ASSIST button launches Sony’s own VAIO Care ™ software, an easy-to-use program that lets you tune-up, maintain, update and troubleshoot the PC.
• A resolution button lets you increase or decrease screen resolution for optimal viewing.
◦ The P Series also boasts a unique mobile nav grip to surf the web without a mouse or keyboard. A trackpad and left- and right-click buttons are built right into the LCD bezel, providing a creative solution to navigate the web and a new way to interact with a PC.
◦ It features a high-resolution, 1600 x 768, LED backlit 8-inch ultra-wide display (diagonal), making it easy to view everything from entire spreadsheets to full web pages. Plus, for a more convenient way to read long web pages without all the scrolling, turn the P Series on its side to change the viewing orientation from landscape mode to portrait mode. A new array of stylish carrying cases and wireless mice are now available.

WHEN: Available now for pre-sale at www.sony.com/pr/pseries and at select retailers around the country for about $800. To find the closest Sony Style store, please visit www.sonystyle.com.

Sony delivers a smarter on-the-move computing experience: Ultra-portable, easy to carry new VAIO P Series

· Colourful ultra-portable PC weighs just over 600g
· New design for two-handed operation while standing or walking
· GPS and Digital Compass
· Accelerometer sensor
· Built-in Everywair 3G
· Clear, bright, widescreen VAIO Display Plus
· Easy to use with Quick Web Access

It’s smaller than a notebook and smarter than a smartphone: the colourful VAIO P Series from Sony is your perfect partner for on-the-move computing.

Weighing just over 600g and slipping effortlessly into a bag or jacket pocket, new VAIO P Series gives you all the power of a fully-featured Windows® computing experience… and so much more.

Ideal for busy people who can’t sit still, it’s the first VAIO designed for simple operation if you’re standing or walking. The central trackball is complemented by an additional touchpad and mouse buttons. Duplicating the main controls, they’re located at either edge of the screen for comfortable operation with both thumbs while you’re holding the computer in two hands.

VAIO P Series is the first notebook computer from Sony with built-in GPS and a new Digital Compass. Perfect for telling you where you are and what’s happening around you, they can help you find your hotel or a nearby restaurant if you’re standing on the street corner in an unfamiliar city1.

A brand-new VAIO Location Search software offers a real-time map view without tying up your web browser. Your map position and orientation are displayed along with nearby Points of Interest and even local weather conditions.

The ultra-light notebook’s ‘on-the-go’ credentials for travellers are boosted with Everywair 3G on-board, giving high-speed connectivity to mobile networks (where available).

New VAIO P is the first notebook from Sony with a built-in accelerometer that responds to physical movements. Just give VAIO a gentle shake to ‘flick’ through pictures or the pages of a PDF document, or navigate back and forth through your web browsing history.

The sensor also recognises when VAIO P Series is turned on its side, automatically ‘flipping’ the screen for easy reading of documents or web pages in portrait mode. The notebook’s additional mouse buttons are perfectly placed for comfortable page-turning when you’re reading in portrait position – just like a paperback book or magazine.

New VAIO P Series is beautifully designed for easy operation, with a comfortable full-pitch keyboard for easy typing, plus a bright, extra-wide VAIO Display Plus that’s ideally proportioned for viewing movies or two web pages side-by-side. There’s also an ambient light sensor that dims screen illumination for comfortable viewing while saving power.

For extra convenience, dedicated buttons are provided for Quick Web Access and one-touch access to VAIO Care. There’s also a handy new Change Resolution button: instantly select a larger font size for easy on-screen reading, or choose maximum detail for HD movie viewing.

Available in five vibrant colours (black, white, pink, green and orange), the new VAIO P Series is complemented by a choice of stylish accessories that includes a distinctively perforated silicone slip case and carry strap.

The new VAIO P Series ultra-portable notebook computer is available from June 2010.
