By now everyone and their mother knows that Motorola dropped the ball a few years ago and has been struggling to gain back market share in the US.  The RAZR was a massive success but after that it was all downhill – they sort of eclipsed themselves.  But alas, the handset maker is back and this time they’ve got a brand new bag: the Motorola DROID!  It’s one of Moto’s first Android handsets and based on my quick unboxing video above, I likely.  The handset is heavy, but in a good way and nice and solid feeling unlike Apple’s iPhone.  Enjoy.Similar Posts:

Just when I thought Sprint had begun to get their shit together, they go and officially introduce the Samsung Instinct HD.  This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about this device, but up until now we could only go on rumor and speculation when it came to specs.

Within Sprint’s official announcement, they’ve stated, and I quote that the Samsung Instinct HD “allows photo and video playback on an HD capable auxiliary device but it does not provide HD playback directly on the handset.”  Damn, talk about taking the wind out of your own sail.  Of course, this is more Samsung’s doing than Sprint, but that should mean a more affordable price tag, right?  Wrong, you’ll be dropping $250 after a 2-year contact signing.

At least this version includes a 5 megapixel camera that can record HD video, and Samsung has also been kind enough to toss in Stereo Bluetooth, an accelerometer, visual voicemail, a full Opera Mobile 9.7 Web browser and WiFi connectivity.

Expect the Samsung Instinct HD to arrive on 9/27 at a Best Buy store near you.

Kodak kicked out a new pocket sized camcorder today, the Zi8.  Unlike the previous iterations of the Kodak Z series camcorder, the Zi8 captures 1080p video and 5 megapixel stills.  It’s also got an SD card slot, 2.5-inch LCD, face recognition software and electronic image stabilization, a feature we haven’t seen in a camcorder of this form factor before.  With Samsung’s offering on the way and now this, Flip is starting to look a bit soggy.

Expect the Kodak Zi8 to hit store shelves this September for $179.

Based on the design prowess, or lack there of this LCD monitor from Samsung, I think it’s safe to say that the consumer electronics company is cutting back on R&D.  Embedded at the top of the 24-inch VC240 monitor is a 5 megapixel webcam that can capture 720p video at 30fps.  Great if you wanna snap some self portraits, but 720p streaming, I don’t think so, at least not yet.  My VoIP jargon is a little rusty, but from the sounds of it this monitor has its very own built-in VoIP hardware, although its not clear if you can just plug in an Ethernet cord sans computer and dial out.  The monitor specs include 1920×1080 resolution, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response time and DVI input.  Street date is pegged for this Fall for $1,999.

NEW NETWORK TECHNOLOGY

Leveraging Samsung’s renown front-of-screen performance, the VC240 also incorporates H.264 codec and a 5 megapixel camera and noise-cancelling microphones. The VC240 provides excellent video compression and high resolution images. Special video and voice functions enhance the user experience in a video conference environment, including adaptive jitter buffer, lip synchronization, acoustic echo cancellation and voice activation detection while a 5ms response rate assures users of motion clarity with reduced blurring. A 1000:1 contrast ratio reduces eye fatigue and provides sharper text, deeper shadows and brighter colors.

The VC240 is fully interoperable with RADVISION’s SCOPIA line of products and complements RADVISION’s other desktop video solutions. In more Samsung news, the company also announced the Jet 3.1-inch AMOLED touchscreen phone. Sporting what appears to be the exact same form factor as the Omnia II, the Jet is powered by an 800MHz processor that apparently produces the fastest full touch handset on the market today.  It runs Touchwiz 2.0 and features  a 5 megapixel sensor, GPS, DNSe & SRS sound effect technology, DivX and XviD video support.  No word on release, price or carrier.

Is this just another candy bar phone?  I’m afraid so, but it’s Friday, so why the hell not.  Originally code named Lucido, which means ’slide’ in Italian (so says Google translate), the Samsung S7220 is a Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) phone that sports a 2.2-inch AMOLED screen, 5MP camera, FM radio with RDS, accelerometer, GPS with Google Maps, microSD card slot and Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR.  It measures 114mm × 46.3mm × 11.8 mm and will hit the UK sometime this April for a yet to be disclosed price.

Images of a purported all touchscreen Motorola handset showed up over the weekend.  Taking a bite off the Motozine5, the unnamed handset is said to carry the same 5 megapixel camera.   Other indications point to an Android OS, but that’s more pontification than anything else.  Unfortunately, additional details are unknown so all we can do is hurry up and wait, that is assuming anyone has plans to actually purchase a Motorola handset…ever.

With a bevy of phones hitting the market in the next few weeks I can barely keep up.  I guess that’s Sony Ericsson rational for dropping not one, but two phones on us this week.  The Sony Ericcson C903, which mind you is very reminiscent of the rumored C901 shines bright thank to its 5 megapixel camera – not much of a ‘torch of triumph’ if you ask me.  Complimenting the snapper is an ‘auto rotating’ 2.4-inch (240×320) screen, face detect, flash, BestPic, A-GPS, media player, TrackID and quad-band support with UMTS/HSPA in a couple different formats.

It probably isn’t justifiable to call this pictured handset – officially called the KM900 – from LG ‘leaked’.  Why?  Because the company put this high rez image on their own blog to ‘tease’ us.  Fortunately, I scrapped up some other images, and based on the way the UI looks LG might just be in line for a game of litigation with good old Apple.  So there really aren’t too many details, but we do know WiFi, touchscreen, front facing camera, dedicated calling buttons and some sort of half moon shaped nav wheel. Nokia announced their simple, but sleek 6700 Classic today.  The candy bar phone features a full metal keymat, 5 megapixel camera, microSD card slot, aGPS with Nokia maps, high speed data access, 2.2-inch QVGA screen and support for quad-band and tri-band cellular service.

Expect the Nokia 6700 Classic to launch in the 2nd quarter of 2009 for about $308, although it won’t make it State side at that time.

It looks like Sony Ericsson is set to introduce a water downed version of their C902 Cybershot phone, called the C901.  Not too much is known, but expect a 5MP camera with a Xenon Flash and it to launch in April with a  variety of colors.

Apparently, when Fujitsu says ‘peace of mind’ they mean it.  Why so?  They’re latest phone, which is available on Japan’s NTT DOCOMO network, features fingerprint security and the ability to be submersed in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes.  The F-01A’s fingerprint scanner, which is from AuthenTec’s TouchStone packaging technology, also doubles as a mini mouse pad.  Other features includes a 5MP camera, GPS, 3.5-inch touchscreen, 1Seg Mobile TV tuner and e-Wallet mobile payment.

When I originally wrote about the PoGo last May I was under the impression that it would be a stand alone printer that would utilize ZINK technology.  Turns out I was wrong; well, partially wrong.  The Polaroid PoGo is in fact a digital iteration of the original Polaroid camera.  Built-in to the unit is a 5 megapixel camera, ZINK printer for instant prints, 3-inch LCD screen and SD card slot.  The PoGo is capable of printing 2×3″ color prints in less than 60 seconds and weighs 10oz.

The Polaroid PoGo will be available this March for $199 at all major retailers.  A 10-pack of the ZINK paper costs $5, where as a 30-pack is just $13.

Riding firmly on Prada’s coattails, Hugo Boss is set to intro a cell phone of their own.  Apparently it’s pretty much the same phone as Prada and features 3G connectivity, GSM and EDGE tri band (900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz), 2.8-inch touchscreen, 5MP camera, microSD card slot, 3 hour talk time, FM radio with RDS and a playlist tailored by the Boss, Hugo himself.
