The Sony Bloggie, otherwise know as the Sony Webbie – it’s an updated version – has been on the market for well over a year now…well at least the form factor has. So that’s why I’m a bit surprised to just get word of their recently released add on camera kit, which includes not only the camera and a 4GB Memory Stick, but a 360 degree video accessory. It, which is in fact a lens, mounts directly onto the camera and allows you to shoot video footage with a 360 degree perspective. Wacky, I know, but perfect for a little recon or amateur paparazzi shooting.

Amazon has the kit for $180.

Pop the champagne! AT&T just officially announced their first Android handset, the Motorola Backflip. Okay, I’m way overstating my excitement, but it’s good to see Big Blue jump on board with the mobile Google OS.

The Backflip is a Motoblur device and unlike other flip phones is a reverse flip. What’s that mean? The QWERTY keyboard folds onto the back of the handset as opposed to over the screen. Features include WiFi, a 5 megapixel camera, 3G connectivity, a 3.1-inch touchscreen display and more.

The Backflip will launch on March 7th for $100 after a $100 mail-in-rebate and 2-year signing.

The touchscreen smartphone ship sailed sometime ago for me – I’m an iPhone user – but for those of you that still havent’ signed onto a fingertip/stylus friendly handset, you might want to consider the small and friendly LG Mini GD880. Yesterday, the phone got fully officialy. From a spec standpoint here is what we know: 3.2-inch touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera, WiFi, 7.2mbps HDSPA, FM radio, 10.6mm frame, 99 gram weight and LG’s Air Sync service which presumambly keeps your contacts and more always up to date with your computer.

The LG Mini will roll out in Europe in March, but for how much is anyone’s guess.

LG Unveils The World’s First 3 Way Sync Feature Phone At MWC 2010

Seoul (Korea Newswire) February 16, 2010 — LG Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in mobile communications, has showcased its new LG Mini (LG GD880), the world`s first feature phone to support 3-Way Sync service, at the Mobile World Congress. The mobile trade show began on the 15th of February in the Spanish city of Barcelona and will run until the 18th.

Measuring 10.6mm in depth and weighing just 99g, the LG Mini boasts an array of superb features including LG’s 3-Way Sync service, called LG Air Sync. This next-generation mobile technology enables users to continually sync the data on their phones with information stored on their PCs and their browser history over a wireless network, ensuring that contents such as photos, video clips, calendars and phone books can be updated and accessed at all times. As the first feature phone to support LG Air Sync, a form of the cloud computing so far available only on smartphones, LG expects the LG Mini to generate considerable buzz on the market.

“We live in an information-oriented society with vast amounts of data and content scattered all over the place. Because of this, one of the major battles in the future mobile market is likely to be in the data management technology industry, focusing on seamless access among different devices,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “We have developed the LG Mini, which offers technological integration with its unique LG Air Sync service, in response to this trend.”

In keeping tabs on users’ personal preferences and information, the LG Air Sync works in three ways. First, through the History Sync function, the phone’s browser is updated with the 100 most recent websites users visited on their PC, allowing users to return to the exact webpage where they left off. Second, through the Personal Information Manager (PIM) Sync function, contact details and daily plans in the LG Mini can be transferred to user’s PC. Even when users lose or misplace their phone, any important data will be still accessible through their PC. Finally, with the R-Click function, pictures and information on users` PCs can be transferred instantly to the LG Mini, meaning any picture on a website can become the LG Mini`s wallpaper with just a simple click of the mouse.

The smallest and slimmest 3.2-inch full touchscreen phone on the market today, the LG Mini also comes with speedy web browsing and fast push email functions for even greater user convenience. Thanks to powerful SNS features, users can easily keep in touch with friends online via social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter while also getting constant updates of what their friends are up to.

With its tiny frame, the LG Mini also boasts a 5.0 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, FM radio and 7.2 Mbps HDSPA. The LG Mini will be available in Europe from March, followed by other markets.

GoBandit’s GPS Action camcorder might lack an Austin Power’s inspired set of lasers, but one thing it does have over the ContourHD is inbuilt GPS. With the GPS coordinates you can not only see where you recorded the footage in question, but even over lay an active map on top of the video flush with speed, top speed and height.

Much like the aforementioned competitor it can record 720p video at 30fps onto its 2GB of storage, or you can add a microSD card for up to 32GB for even more extreme footage. Other features include the ability to snap 5 megapixel still and a waterproof housing that is good up to 1m of submersion.

Expect an May release (pre-order available now) and a $400 price tag.

By now everyone and their mother knows that Motorola dropped the ball a few years ago and has been struggling to gain back market share in the US. The RAZR was a massive success but after that it was all downhill – they sort of eclipsed themselves. But alas, the handset maker is back and this time they’ve got a brand new bag: the Motorola DROID! It’s one of Moto’s first Android handsets and based on my quick unboxing video above, I likely. The handset is heavy, but in a good way and nice and solid feeling unlike Apple’s iPhone. Enjoy.

Just when I thought Sprint had begun to get their shit together, they go and officially introduce the Samsung Instinct HD. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about this device, but up until now we could only go on rumor and speculation when it came to specs.

Within Sprint’s official announcement, they’ve stated, and I quote that the Samsung Instinct HD “allows photo and video playback on an HD capable auxiliary device but it does not provide HD playback directly on the handset.” Damn, talk about taking the wind out of your own sail. Of course, this is more Samsung’s doing than Sprint, but that should mean a more affordable price tag, right? Wrong, you’ll be dropping $250 after a 2-year contact signing.

At least this version includes a 5 megapixel camera that can record HD video, and Samsung has also been kind enough to toss in Stereo Bluetooth, an accelerometer, visual voicemail, a full Opera Mobile 9.7 Web browser and WiFi connectivity.

Expect the Samsung Instinct HD to arrive on 9/27 at a Best Buy store near you.

Kodak kicked out a new pocket sized camcorder today, the Zi8. Unlike the previous iterations of the Kodak Z series camcorder, the Zi8 captures 1080p video and 5 megapixel stills. It’s also got an SD card slot, 2.5-inch LCD, face recognition software and electronic image stabilization, a feature we haven’t seen in a camcorder of this form factor before. With Samsung’s offering on the way and now this, Flip is starting to look a bit soggy.

Expect the Kodak Zi8 to hit store shelves this September for $179.

Based on the design prowess, or lack there of this LCD monitor from Samsung, I think it’s safe to say that the consumer electronics company is cutting back on R&D. Embedded at the top of the 24-inch VC240 monitor is a 5 megapixel webcam that can capture 720p video at 30fps. Great if you wanna snap some self portraits, but 720p streaming, I don’t think so, at least not yet. My VoIP jargon is a little rusty, but from the sounds of it this monitor has its very own built-in VoIP hardware, although its not clear if you can just plug in an Ethernet cord sans computer and dial out. The monitor specs include 1920×1080 resolution, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response time and DVI input. Street date is pegged for this Fall for $1,999.

Samsung and RADVISION Develop HD Video Conference Multimedia LCD Monitor

Samsung to Demo VC240 at Booth #4461, Hall B

InfoComm 2009
Booth #4461, Hall B
ORLANDO, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–RADVISION and Samsung Electronics America, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Corporation, today unveiled the VC240, their first product on the market to integrate all the components required for high definition desktop video conferencing into a single unit at an affordable price. The VC240 can operate as a standalone desktop HD video conferencing device and as a 24 inch high resolution monitor.

“Samsung is well-positioned in the future of telepresence and digital convergence, and this partnership with RADVISION brings to market a unique solution with the ability to scale,” says J.H. Kim, President of Samsung Electronics America, Information Technology Division. “The VC240 highlights our ability to provide superior display technology for any current or future display application.”

Ideal for conference rooms and businesses who want to conduct in-person meetings without the complexities associated with travel, the VC240 is an all in one video conferencing solution. A Video and Voice over Internet Protocols (V2oIP) enabled network monitor, it is fully compatible with other VoIP systems including Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based Multipoint Control Units (MCUs) and Unified Communications (MS). It can also function as a one to multipoint video conference with its built-in VoIP module.

“The VC240 breaks down barriers in the desktop market by allowing users to enjoy all the benefits of the high definition video communications experience at a fraction of the cost of existing hardware desktop solutions,” says Boaz Raviv, CEO of RADVISION. “With the introduction of this product Samsung and RADVISION are literally changing the playing field by enabling wide scale deployment of HD video on the desktop. We are honored to partner with the world’s leading expert in LCD technology and together we will bring the market a new level of desktop video communications.”

NEW NETWORK TECHNOLOGY

Leveraging Samsung’s renown front-of-screen performance, the VC240 also incorporates H.264 codec and a 5 megapixel camera and noise-cancelling microphones. The VC240 provides excellent video compression and high resolution images. Special video and voice functions enhance the user experience in a video conference environment, including adaptive jitter buffer, lip synchronization, acoustic echo cancellation and voice activation detection while a 5ms response rate assures users of motion clarity with reduced blurring. A 1000:1 contrast ratio reduces eye fatigue and provides sharper text, deeper shadows and brighter colors.

The VC240 is fully interoperable with RADVISION’s SCOPIA line of products and complements RADVISION’s other desktop video solutions. It will also offer RADVISION’s latest advanced video features including SVC (Scalable Video Coding) and Forward Error Correction features ensuring the highest quality possible.

The VC240 also supports a rage of video and audio inputs, including DVI-I and VGA component connections.

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

The VC240 will be available this Fall with a suggested price of $1,999 through Samsung Resellers and distribution channels, which can be located by calling 1-866-SAM-4BIZ. Samsung Power Partners receive special promotions, lead referrals, training and technical support, as well as collateral and marketing materials. To find out more about becoming a Samsung Power Partner, visit www.samsungP3.com.

Samsung will demonstrate the VC240 from June 17 – 19 in booth #4461, Hall B.
