Word in rumorville is that HP’s Touchpad will launch this June and start at $499 for the 16GB model – add $100 for the 32GB.  Yup, it’s smack in line with Apple’s iPad pricing.  Keep in mind that this info comes by way of an unknown retailer’s release chart that is being used to train their employees about all the impending tablets, so it very well could be conjecture.  The 7-inch version of the tablet, code named Opal, is said to arrive probably sometime this September.  

As of now, there is no word on pricing for the smaller Touchpad or a launch schedule for a cellular enabled version of the tablet.

Parrot‘s latest product, the DIA, is one confusing piece of kit.  At first blush, and first glance of the press release, it seems to suggest anything but a digital photo frame.  But read further and you’ll soon discover that’s exactly what it is.

The DIA is developed in collaboration with Jean-Louis Frechin, founder of nodesign agency.  Instead of your usual blacked out screen, the DIA utilizes a translucent display, which when turned off is see through.  So in turn, and as suggested by the designer, the photo frame becomes an object in an upon itself, as oppose to an empty vessel.

The screen measures 10×4 inches, though there is no mention of resolution.  There are a number of apps available for the Android based device. For transferring and viewing content there are two USB ports, WiFi, an SD card slot and Bluetooth connectivity.

Parrot’s DIA photo frame will hit store shelves this coming February for an estimated $500.

Your photos, only your photos

Due to its function, the photo frame is an object we look at, that we display prominently. While it is important the frame is beautiful, it is essential that the frame “steps aside” for the benefit of the photo.

“Today, screens are all the same. So, with my partner Uros Petrevski, we had to find a different type of screen, without falling into the category of ‘do different just to be different’. We started to handle slide film, to dismantle screens, to play with transparency of light,” explains Jean-Louis Frechin. “DIA frame was born from the idea that it is impossible to represent a printed image on a photo frame. So our frame is close to slide film, with the quality of transparency, and light and format of professional ektachrome.”

DIA Parrot by nodesign is a white rectangle, very simple, with tactile buttons and a trackball to surf in the menu of the frame.

What is striking is its 10×4 inch high resolution screen. Dismantled, deconstructed, disconnected from the frame as if there was nothing behind, this screen is transparency, is light. The picture, your photo, appears through this “light box” in a brand new aesthetic dimension…

“The photo frame designed by Jean-Louis Frechin is very mysterious,” continues Henri Seydoux. “Jean-Louis was smart or ‘crazy’ enough to dismantle the LCD screen we get used to, and the result is quite simply magical. We don’t see where the photo comes from… It is simply there, on this transparent and half-dismantled screen… It is prestidigitation!”

In attempt to stoke up interest, Dell just released a teaser video of the yet to be released Dell Inspiron Duo Tablet.  If you recall, it’s a netbook sized device (10-inch screen) that rocks a swivel screen allowing it to convert from a tablet to a full on netbook in a matter of seconds.   As of now we know that it will run a full version of Windows 7 Home Premium and that it’s powered by an Intel Dual Core processor.

It wasn’t a question of if, but when Viewsonic would debut a tablet computer.  And that day was yesterday.

The company, which is primarily known for their computer monitors, released the deets on their 7-inch and 10-inch tablets.  And while they share the same form factor the hardware and even the software in each respective model is different.

The 7-inch Viewpad, affectionately known as the Viewpad 7 is an Android device with WiFi, Bluetooth and 3.5G connectivity.  The screen has a 800×480 resolution, which are complimented by two cameras (.3 megapixel on the front and a 3 megapixel on the back).  The is 512MB of built-in storage is expandable up to 32GB via the microSD card slot and the battery if good for a solid 10 hours, though were guessing it’s less in real world tests.  10 hours?  That’s on par with some laptops and can only be far less when the 3G is burning up the airwaves.  Viewsonic says that the Viewpad 7 will be available this quarter for $479.

The Viewpad 10 has a 10.1-inch screen and – get this – dual boot capabilities, which means it can run the Android OS or boot into Windows 7 Prem if you’re looking for a full fledged computing experience.  Under the hood is Intel’s Atom processor running at 1.66Ghz – we don’t know which one – 16GB of SSD storage and 1GB of RAM. Unlike its smaller brethren there is just one 1.3 megapixel camera with a microphone, so you can pretty much sum it up to webcam chatting.  This model sports WiFi only and due to its larger, higher resolution LED screen (1024×600) we can only assume that its battery life is slightly less.  The Viewpad should hit store shelves by Q1 of next year and retail for $629.

It’s worth pointing out that these may get picked up by a carrier, and while the Viewpad 10 won’t get subsidized due to it lacking a 3G connectivity, we may well see a subsidized Viewpad 7 after signing a contract.

We don’t have any other specs, but we’re guessing it weighs at least 4lbs and measures something thick.
