Some might argue that the music video is dead thanks to mindless production and redundant shots. Not according to OK Go and they’ve got plenty to say about it.

Their latest video (checkout their previous work) was shot in partnership with Chevy and features the band driving a two miles course. But this ain’t your everyday off road challenge. While the lead singer of OK Go sings, he piloted the Chevy vehicle through a 2-mile course that was littered with an array of instruments that were activated with a variety of arms and bumps in the road. The result? A bizzaro version of the band’s Needing/Getting.

The video apparently took 4 months of preparation and just 4 day of shooting to complete. However, the results speak for themselves.

What?! Turns out that the Red Bull Stratos mission has yet to transpire. It was years ago, or so it seemed, that we first heard about the Stratos. A pilot, named Felix Baumgartner will float to 120,000 feet and return to the Earth’s surface without any mechanical dohickeys, just a space suit and sh*t load of gumption. During his descent to terra firma he”ll achieve the speed of sound and from what we understand no one really knows if he’ll survive.

But, if he does safely return, he’ll not only be the first man to accomplish the speed of sound without an aircraft, but set the record for the longest free fall in the record books (5 minutes and 30 seconds). The record was previously set by Joe Kittinger, who jumped from a height of 102, 800 feet in 1960.

Felix already boast a number of world records, which include highest parachute dive from a building when he jumped from the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; the first person to cross the English Channel in freefall using a specially made fibre wing and more.

A launch date has yet to be announced, but when it does, they’ll be launching the three hour ascent from Roswell, New Mexixo, where conditions are said to be favorable.

Android phones aren’t wiping the floor with Apple, but they’re doing damn well. While the same can’t be said for tablets, what about media players? Well, Android PMPs are sparse. Today the only real contender in the Android court is the Samsung Galaxy Players, which share the same specifications as last year’s Samsung Galaxy S II phones. The iPod Touch shares the same specs as the iPhone 4, so that made it equal, but Samsung’s larger devices weren’t quite as good as overall PMPs. The 5.0 was better for video with it’s giant screen.

But what about Sony’s upcoming Walkman Z? Sony is finally entering the Android PMP field with a Walkman, which means they’re taking it seriously. But just how seriously are they taking it? And can they dethrone the iPod Touch for best portable media player? Let’s take a look and find out.

Size

For a PMP, size matters, and bigger is better. While a phone is up to the user – after all, we all like something different – a PMP is all about viewing media while still having the option to throw the device in your pocket. The iPod Touch is famous for being razor thin and light, and the Walkman Z is preposterously thick at 11.1mm, nearly 4mm thicker than the iPod, and thicker than many of today’s smartphones. However, it’s a 4.3″ screen compared to a 3.5″ display.

Because screen size isn’t the only thing that matters – obviously smaller devices are more convenient in many ways – this bodes difficult to score for size. The Walkman is larger in every way, and 50% heavier than the iPod to boot. For just screen size, that would be fine, but the overall thickness of the Z evens it out. The defining factor is the display, both of which are TFT panels.

However, the overall ridiculous thickness of the Walkman Z just can’t be forgiven. LTE smartphones, which have a rather large LTE chip (and is one of the reasons Apple doesn’t have an LTE phone out yet) are significantly thinner than this Walkman. Why does it have to be so thick? The bigger screen is a definite bonus, but the gargantuan thickness of the Walkman is a joke for a PMP.

Winner: iPod Touch, because the Walkman is preposterously thick.

Appearance

The Walkman Z looks great, but it’s competing with the iPod Touch, which hasn’t changed it’s design much in five years and still looks damn good. Unfortunately the Walkman doesn’t have any standout or charmingly good looks above and beyond the iPod Touch.

Winner: iPod Touch, which looks great.

Display

Both the Walkman and iPod use the same type of display technology, TFT panels. These high quality panels produce accurate colors and are bright enough to see in bright settings and even direct sunlight. There are only two differences: the Walkman is a 4.3″ screen and the iPod has a 3.5″ screen, and the iPod is much more dense with a resolution of 960×640, compared to 800×480. The former point helps out the Walkman, while the latter is a boon for the iPod.

The only differentiator here is aspect ratio. The Walkman is a 16:9 widescreen display and the iPod is 4:3, so watching video will always be better on the Walkman. So while reading text will be easier on the iPod, the Walkman will produce better video because it won’t have black bars on the top and bottom and use the full 4.3″ display to do it.

Winner: Walkman Z, which has a lower screen resolution and density but is widescreen, better for watching media.

Operating System

For some reason everyone is still making Android 2.3 devices. After spending a lot of time with Android 4.0, I can’t understand how any company would ever want to use it, let alone how users would be interested in it considering the update. Yet here we are, with yet another Android 2.3 handheld. Screw that Sony, ship with the new OS.

Winner: iPod Touch, because the Walkman doesn’t have Android 4.0. There are currently no revealed plans to upgrade it to 4.0.

Processor

Apple A4 versus Nvidia’s Tegra 2? That’s a tough call. The Tegra 2 is slightly newer and is a dual-core chip, but Sony hasn’t revealed which model of Tegra 2 it is. Unfortunately that makes things difficult for distinguishing which chip is better. The A4 is an underclocked 800MHz CPU, and with excellent software implementation is very smooth and fast. Tegra 2 is as well, but at this point, without more information I’m going to have to call this one a tie.

Winner: Tie, not enough information.

Storage

Like most products competing with Apple, the Walkman Z is more expensive for the base model but becomes cheaper when adding additional memory. The Walkman comes in three sizes: 8GB, 16GB and 32GB, compared to the iPod’s 8GB, 32GB and 64GB. Unlike many Android devices the Z does not have expandable storage, so the win easily goes to the iPod. Check Price to see how the memory comparisons stack up dollar for dollar.

Winner: iPod Touch, with a higher overall amount of available memory.

Camera

This is saddeningly dissapointing. The iPod Touch camera is a joke, but at least supports decent 720p video and can Facetime. The Walkman Z? No cameras whatsoever. For this price and at this time for any PMP, that’s just unacceptable.

Winner: iPod Touch, which actually has a camera.

Battery Life

iOS devices have historically had much better battery life than Android devices, at least in my experience. The reason isn’t because they have bigger batteries (they rarely do); it’s because the software is very power sensitive. That said, the times Sony has listed for the Walkman Z pale in comparison to Apple’s own rating: 20 hours of continuous music playback on the Z compared to 40 on the iPod, and 5 hours of video compared to 7. For a bigger device, which should have a bigger battery, this shouldn’t be.

Winner: iPod Touch, with a far longer lasting battery.

Features

The Walkman Z offers some pretty unique features not typically found on PMPs today, most of which are aimed specifically at music listeners. There’s a full equalizer, a number of audio enhancers, a built-in FM tuner (YES!), and decent included earbuds. It also has HDMI out for video and audio playback, as well as gaming.

However, the Z also lacks some pretty basic features, like plenty of video filetypes (though this is an easy fix with the right playback app) and charging through a dedicated cable (not MicroUSB). However, both of these are moot compared to the iPod, the former which can be fixed through apps and the latter which is identical to the iPod’s 30-pin connector.

What really sets the Walkman apart? FM radio. Many forget how important radio is for music listening, which I can never stress enough. It’s what set the Zune apart for the longest time, and what makes some smartphones relevant for many users today. the fact that the iPod Touch doesn’t include it, when the iPod Nano does, is a loss on Apple’s part.

Winner: Walkman Z, with FM radio and an audio equalizer.

Price

The pricing on both the iPod Touch and Walkman Z is, well, unfortunate. Both devices use at least year-old hardware. But Sony has a premium starting price of $250 for the 8GB model, and doesn’t match the iPod’s 64GB model in any way. At every price point Apple beats out Sony, by $50 for the base model, and by $20 for the 32GB unit. And for app fanatics, music junkies, or movie hounds the iPod is the only way to get the maximum amount of data storage.

Winner: iPod Touch, at every price point.

Overall Winner

The score speaks for itself. When comparing the two as completely whole and individual devices, they look fairly similar, but by breaking down their parts it’s clear that the iPod Touch destroys the Walkman Z. The few standout features that the Z offers are interesting and worth remembering, especially depending on your need of a PMP, but the overall device just isn’t competitive. The fact that Sony would make a product like this and not make it competitive with a year-old device is unforgivable.

If you want a PMP for video viewing, the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 has a huge screen just for that, and expandable memory. Any Android device can have it’s audio manipulated with downloadable equalizers. The only thing that the Walkman Z offers is everything in a bundle for a high price, but we’ll have to wait and see if for our full review to know whether it’s worth buying for Android lovers.

Tesla Motors ahs released info on its Model X, which his its new crossover the electric-only automaker will put into production by 2014. The plug-in electric crossover is based on the same platform as the Model S sedan (which Tesla says it will go into full production this summer), but the X is wider and actually has some styling cues that make it look like a DeLorean, such as its “falcon wings” that are gullwings that fold up. The Model X is also taller and has a third row that faces forward rather than backward. Tesla says that its new Mode X is supposed to be priced at about $60,000 to $80,000, which is the same as its Model S sedan.

According to Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, the Model X will be offered in both rear- and four-wheel-drive versions, with the four-wheel-drive using two independent electric motors and will have a 0-60 mph time in the 4.4 second range.

The first PC game was Donkey and co-written by Bill Gates, which was a game where you had to avoid the oncoming donkeys, is now available on iOS…just in case there are a few of you out there who missed this fairly simple game. Downloadable via the App store as DONKEY.BAS (what its file name was called), the game is pretty simple to play since you only use one button to change lanes to dodge those darn donkeys coming toward you. It shows off everything that’s great about 8-bit games and is only $0.99 so you don’t have to break the bank on this old school game.

Sigma has given its DP1 and DP2 large-sensor compact cameras a nice little makeover, providing them with 46-megapixel sensors, taking out Nikon’s 26-megapixel D800 as the top dog of resolutions (only on paper since it’s three 15.3 megapixel layers, the effective resolution). The DP1 and DP2 now feature the high-resolution sensor found in Sigma’s SD1, which is has an imaging chip that feature more than 15.3 million sensor photosites with stacked red, green and blue filters.

They’ve also been rebranded as the DP1 Merrill and DP2 Merrill in honor of the sensor’s co-creator, the late Richard B. Merrill, who developed the original Foveon X3 Direct Image Sensor. The new versions also feature redesigned lenses: a 19mm f/2.8 lens for the Sigma DP1 Merrill and a 30mm f/2.8 for the Sigma DP2 Merrill. Both also have moulded-glass aspherical elements, “F” Low Dispersion and Super Multi Layer coating, and a telecentric optical design.

I’ll cut through the hype and say at the outset that a wireless video transmitter isn’t something everybody needs — if your set-top box or Blu-ray player is on a shelf next to the HDTV, running a short HDMI cable takes care of it. But there are specific situations when a wireless transmitter is the way to go — for example, you have a Blu-ray player in the bedroom and want to watch movies or streaming video from it on the bigger TV in the living room. Or you don’t want to run wiring from your home theater components at one end of the room across the floor to the front projector or HDTV at the other end.

Since the video transmitters on the market vary in price and functionality, as opposed to the technology which primarily features a 5 GHz signal for stability and distance, the decision you’ll need to make is whether the transmitter can do 1080p Full HD video and surround audio (should you have 3D-capabilities, you’ll also want it to be 3D compatible). But what about needing more than one device to be transmitting wirelessly?

Enter Belkin’s ScreenCast AV 4. Physically it’s just a transmitter box and a receiver box — but the “4” stands for the total of devices it can accept A/V signals from. So if you want the capabilities to switch between transmitting video from a Blu-ray player AND a game console and a set-top box (etc.) without having to pull out and insert cables every time, this is your new option.

The transmitter is about the size of two paperback books placed side-by-side, with the receiver even smaller. Both have a slightly raised antenna panel on the top and for cooling there’s slots on the bottom (a good suggestion is to always allow for air circulation around any electronic device, of which these two are no exception). The power button on both transmitter and receiver should be turned on and left on — no reason not to — and the addition of a USB port on their back for future updates is a nice touch.

Belkin touts the simplicity of using their ScreenCast, so I’ll give it a go. In the bedroom, I connect my Xbox 360’s HDMI cable (used for watching streaming movies and playing games) to input 1 on the transmitter’s back. I follow this with the output from my Dish Network satellite receiver, going into the transmitter’s input #2. The transmitter goes on the corner of the TV stand and I connect the power for it. You’ll notice that I’ve made no changes to the setup systems on either of the two devices — I’m expecting the A/V of each to make its way through the transmitter with the same results as if they were still plugged into the HDTV: being 1080p high-def resolution of the video and 5.1 surround audio.

The only real effort is to connect the included IR (infrared) cable to the transmitter’s IR socket. I line up one of the 4 bulb-tipped ends in front of each of the device’s IR panels (rather than just placing them in front to “strike” the panels, I secure each with a piece of cellophane tape). And since I can run 3D films on my PlayStation 3, and the ScreenCast includes that in its specs, I’ll connect this game console to input #3 — keeping in mind that its Bluetooth remote reception won’t work with one of the IR cables.

Setting up the receiver is similar to that of the transmitter — actually it’s even easier. I place it next to my front projector’s switcher in the living room, plug one end of a HDMI cable into the output socket and then swap the other end for the input on the amplifier that works as both a switcher for the projector as well as providing the audio through a 7:1 channel speaker setup. The transmitter’s power plug then goes into an AC outlet.

Now you might have noticed that I didn’t have to worry about there being line-of-sight between the transmitter and receiver. That’s because the wireless signal works through walls and can connect up to 100 feet away (I’m less than 90 feet in distance here). Also, I didn’t need to press the syncing buttons on the back of the transmitter/receiver because they’re already paired. And there’s no channel switching or other technical things to worry about.

There’s a manual “Source” button on the receiver for switching between the devices playing, but you’ll find using the credit card-sized remote, as I did, more useful for this. For controlling the devices from a distance, just aim its remote control at the receiver so that the IR signal can be transmitted back to the transmitter and outputted through the IR cable (the solid blue light on the receiver will flash when a remote’s signal is entered). The ScreenCast remote is pretty simple too: Up/Down arrows for cycling through the outputs, with an onscreen confirmation, and an “OK” button. The remote will be used with the receiver when it has first been turned on to cycle through a short setup.

So here we go. I turn on the amplifier and fire up the projector. As soon as the light hits full illumination (2 minutes), I press the StreamCast remote to bring up its menu. The only thing I want to do with it is select names for the inputs from the pre-formatted list so I don’t have to rely on memory as to which input is connected to what. Once done, I select the Xbox’s input and then aim the Xbox remote at the receiver, punch “On” and there in all its glory is Microsoft’s baby. I cycle through to the Netflix app and run through a few scenes of films and TV episodes I’m familiar with. Predictably, the image looks good and if there’s any lag in the transmission from the Xbox to what the projector’s outputting, I can’t see it.

Switching to the Dish receiver (first using the StreamCast remote and then the Dish remote), I play some movies from HBO and even though the TV signal is a compressed one, the video displayed on the projection screen is free of artifact and “noise” — it doesn’t look any better than what I’m used to, but it certainly doesn’t look any worse. I also go into some of the Dish’s static menus to check out whether the text is breaking up — it isn’t. So for all practical purposes, it’s like I have the Dish hooked up directly to the projector. And the audio is no less dynamic or multi-channel than it would be in the bedroom.

Now I don’t want you to think that I’m just sitting on the couch for all of this. During the transmission tests I’ve kept my wireless network on to see if that would interfere with the signal — some 6 hours of testing while streaming through he wireless network didn’t seem to faze the StreamCast any. Nor did turning on the microwave do anything either. Finally, I walked around the living room having a conversation on my cell phone and the cellular signal didn’t seem to have any impact on the StreamCast or vise versa. So okay, after an hour of walking, I did sit back down — sue me.

The last test was to switch to the PS3. I ran the 2D version of Iron Man and, as expected, it looked great on the projection screen. I then ejected the disc from the PS3 and replaced it with the 3D version and, other than the fact that the image was now in 3D and I had to put on 3D glasses, there was no difference in the image being presented. This was also the case when I ran a few other 3D discs that I had 2D versions of. The end result is that the StreamCast handled 3D transmissions with no more difficulty than it did 2D.

Editor’s Rating:

4.5 out of 5 stars

Excellent

Bottom Line: At a price point of $249, the StreamCast is a good choice for those who find wiring their components distasteful, difficult or impractical (a display in the basement needing the set-top box from upstairs comes to mind). Technophobes will find the StreamCast no more complicated to set up and use than that of a DVD or Blu-ray player — and yes you can connect other types of video creating devices to the StreamCast too, providing the PC or tablet or smartphone can output a HDMI-compatible signal to connect to one of the StreamCast’s inputs. Add the StreamCast’s dependability and its being able to connect to multiple HD devices, and you’ve got just so much icing added to one tasty cake.

Pros

Multiple A/V inputs

Option for additional transmitters/receivers

Wall mount kit for receiver included

Cons

Switching between inputs can take up to 20 seconds

No paper-based manual

Credit card-sized remote is easily lost

Mass Effect 3 will be expanding its narrative and providing players some more combat via its new iPad iOS game, Mass Effect Infiltrator. While the Mass Effect series is a sci-fi role-playing game known for its over-the-shoulder shooter gameplay, its iOS version will be all about fighting.

The backstory on the new iOS game is about a soldier named Randall Ezno and his travels to track down alien species across the universe. It starts to overlap with the storyline from Mass Effect 3 as he starts to feed information and various items to Commander Shepard, the protagonist of Mass Effect 3. And to keep players interested in the new iOS game, items and info collected in it will also appear in the console game for Shepard to use. While Mass Effect Infiltrator gameplay will focus on short bursts of action, its graphics are pretty on par with those of the actual console game. As one of the best-looking mobile games, players control Ezno via touch-based analog-sticks, with shooting controls working by tapping on enemies for aiming.

The game will be available for all iOS devices, including iPad, iPod and iPhone. There’s no news on price or an exact release date yet, but EA reps mentioned that it would be released around the same time as Mass Effect 3.

No doubt you’ve dropped your iPhone from a height that warrants a broken screen or cracked back. But like many, you’ve gotten lucky despite being engrossed in a state of fear induced frenzy. That’s why we recommend that all those with a penchant for buttery fingers invest in case that will extend the iPhone’s life, and yours, by more than a few inadvertent drops to the concrete.

G-Form, a company that’s products protect beyond any rational need (see the videos here and here), is back in the lime light with a new iPhone case that can shield Apple’s handset from even the hardest of slaps, literally. What are we talking about? Hit the above video to see, but to paraphrase, G-Form is so confident in their iPhone case that they launched Apple’s handset into a hockey net at 82mph off the back of a hockey stick. If the company is to be believed, and we don’t see why not, the stick achieved over 30,000psi of force on the case, enough to shatter your face. The result is a fully functional iPhone with a slight, snowy dusting.

It’s no secret that car manufactures road test their vehicles in the public domain. To keep their worst kept secrets, well, slightly more secret they’ll generally finish the car in a vinyl covering or some sort of atrocious paint job. Fortunately, that has never fooled anyone and good thing, because if it did we wouldn’t have this video of the BMW i8 prototype electric/gas hybrid vehicle being tested in inclement weather (i.e. snow). Donuts aside, which is what you’ll see in the above clip, the i8 can supposedly achieve 87mpg, though that mileage will no doubt very with acceleration, traction and tomfoolery.
