We keep hearing about ‘contactless’ payment with cell phones – you know, walk up to the kiosk, wave your phone by the register and be on your way. One of the challenges, or so it would seem, would be waiting for the rollout of the next gen phones sporting the necessary security measures and protocols to do this. If the SanDisk Corp has its way they’ll put all this ’poppycock’ to bed. In fact, you’ll just run to the store and pick up a compatible microSD memory card that contains the necessary credits (money) and hardware. Known as SmartMX, SanDisk has already began a pilot program on the microSD card format, and hopes for a “broader commercial rollout by 2007â€?.
“Today, consumers purchase SanDisk flash cards to expand their mobile phone storage capabilities for pictures, music and videos, and, thanks to TrustedFlash technology, they can enjoy premium content such as music and movies
. Tomorrow, they will also use TrustedFlash cards with SmartMX technology to expand the phone’s security capabilities and host a variety of NFC applications to purchase tickets, buy a cup of coffee and make other small purchases, said Farshid Sabet, Senior Director of Mobile Content and Security Solutions at SanDisk, in a statement.

Head of Bell labs, Jeong Kim, said today that phones will soon be able to smell us. We’re thinking security implementation, and why not use a widely adopted technology as a test bed?   According to Hankooki Times, Bell Labs is already in the process of developing a “highly-sensitive electronic nose with Quantum Cascade Laser, the unique material invented by several of Bell Labs researchers in 1994.   It all smells a bit fishy, but let’s see what emerges.

We loves us some snoppin’ at GadgetReview. We’ve seen a few phones that blur the lines between spying and home security, but this home made device is probably all espionage as it transmits the user’s telephone call via FM frequency. According to Electronics Lab the signal should be good for up to 200’ and broadcast between 88 to about 94Mhz.

This USB Wireless PC Lock from Think Geek is actually a pretty innovative security system. It consists of two pieces, a USB dongle which attaches to your PC and a battery-powered keychain transmitter. As soon as the transmitter is more than 2 meters away from the PC, the PC automatically locks the PC. Once you get back within 2 meters — unlocked. Yes, there is a manual override in case your transmitter runs out of batteris or you lose the device.
The software is currently only compatible with Windows
and does not work with dual screen computers.
Available from Think Geek for $29.99.
