Say magnetic and we just about jump with joy. Show us a magnetic product and we’ll immediately dispense cash to the person selling the product. Case in point, the Covert.

At a glance the product, which comes from the collective minds of Quirky, allows you to lock and unlock your drawers or cupboards using a magnetic key. However, it’s a bit more complicated than that. First, you’ll need to install the special magnetic latch that comes in two pieces. Both pieces attach inside the drawer using either a temporary adhesive or screws. The screws provide far more security, though the caveat is that you’ll permanently damage the furniture. The adhesives are good for those of you residing in a dorm room or renting furniture. Once installed, it’s as simple as closing the drawer and dragging the magnetic key from right to left, which unlocks the sliding latch embedded in the drawer.

It’s a genius simple design, but like many of Quirky’s products this one hasn’t gone into production. In fact, they’re trying to drum up interest, so hit the site and tell them how much you’d be willing to pay for this. Regardless, we get the feeling that we’ll see this product end up at Bed Bath and Beyond before year’s end.

Keeping the dog out of the garbage can or your cat from going through your underwear generally calls for a lock and key scenario. But that’s hardly a geeky answer and won’t condition Rex to think twice before he digs through bacon grease and chicken bones.

Enter the SpyNet Laser Trip Wire. Yup, the same tech we grew up watching in movies – Catherine Zeta Jones comes to mind – is now ready for your kitchen, living room, heck even your cubicle.

The system includes a transmitter that beams a laser to a receiver unit, as well as 2 mirror units to expand its reach around corners and through door ways. If someone, or something crosses its path an audible alert will be sounded, notifying you that there is an intruder in your midst. You’ll need 6 AAA batteries to power this setup, but they should last up to 5-10 hours with continuous use, at least that’s our best guess based on our laser experience.

ThinkGeek sells it for $34.99.

Hipsters has long resorted to placing their bike lock in a pant pocket. Yeah, we get it. You’re hip and too cool to carry a backpack or mount your U-Lock to your bike. Talk about impractical if not just straight up uncomfortable. And what happens if you take a dinger? Chances are that the U-Lock will be stuffed up your butt leaving you with a rather uncomfortable feeling.

With the Küat Bottle Lock, hipsters and anyone with a water bottle rack on their bike can carry around a 5-foot 8mm cable, which is long enough to lock up you and your friend’s bike. For any determined bike thief this will hardly prove a challenge, so we suggest using this with a ballsy U-Lock. If anything it’s a great way to secure your rims, seat and whatever goodies you have attached to your fixie.

For added pizazz, Küat has included a small storage area at the bottom of the bottle, large enough to hold your keys, weed pipe or mustache wax. When you’re ready to head home, the cable retracts back into the bottle, which we hope can be accomplished by rotating the top of the device.

The Küat Bottle Lock is available now for $34.

<a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2011/10/vuezone-personal-video-network-review.html/vuezone"rel="attachment wp-att-111106" >

4 out of 5 stars

If you’re the kind of person to put cameras inside your house, for anything from making sure your kids are doing their homework (spying on them) to basic security, there aren’t a lot of good options. That is, there aren’t many camera options that won’t clear your bank account and force you to sell all the wonderful stuff you plan on watching closely, kids included. Whatever it is you want to keep an eye on, that eye should be like Sauron: all seeing.

That’s what VueZone offers with their Personal Video Network (PVN), a simple, no-BS system of several cameras connected wirelessly and streaming whenever you want to your computer or smartphone. No serious installation required, no computer required. To set the PVN up plug the base unit into your home network and set up the cameras wherever you like. After registering at VueZone’s website and inputting the code on the base, users gain full access to viewing their cameras and gain full control over all camera settings and options.

What makes the PVN interesting and convenient is that it works on iPhone, Android and Blackberry, so users can stream video to their smartphones from anywhere, freely. This feature alone makes the PVN worth having because peace of mind is all about timing. The longer we unsure about a situation the more our imaginations run wild. Having instant access to what that camera sees and knowing that it can be viewed anytime kills that negative anticipation.

For this review I tested the PVN with two motion-sensitive cameras (retail $290), though the PVN is sold with both a standard camera and motion camera for less. Up to 15 cameras can be put on one system, and individual cameras cost $80 and $100 for standard and motion detection, respectively. Each camera can record at resolutions of 320×240 and 640×480, and can capture 2MP pictures (1600×1200). The lower the video resolution, the more frames per second captured, though framerate isn’t too important for security cameras, especially without audio recording. I tested both resolutions, and even on smartphones the 320×240 recordings are too small. I recommend recording at 640×480.

I tested the free app on my iPhone 3GS, the Blackberry Torch 9850, and HTC Evo 3D, and all work exceptionally well. The latter two phones can view the 640×480 resolution, while the 3GS downscales it to accommodate the lower-resolution 320×480 display. All have the same basic functions, which includes viewing, adjusting settings, recording, and watching the last recordings automatically taken from a motion camera. Only the iPhone app allows for sharing cameras with friends and watching saved recordings through the phone. Both of these features need to be on all devices.

In my office I’ve used the PVN for two things: to watch for arriving shipments and entering guests from two vantage points. However, the PVN is not designed to take over as a security system, and while I could have left one camera active, that would have drained the two AAA-batteries in less than a day. The PVN is rated for up to six months with five minutes of daily viewing (12.5 hours total). However, sometimes the local FedEx deliveryman will drop a package and not ring, and I won’t know for hours. I thought the PVN would be exceptional to fix this, and save me hours of waiting for packages, but there is no alerts system in place for the motion tracking cameras yet. They will activate and record when sensing movement, but they won’t update users via smartphone app through in-app alerts if something happened.

I think that such a feature would make the PVN exceptional, though no such feature exists as of yet. Because of this, the PVN is a peace-of-mind system only, specifically for when users need to have eyes on whatever the camera is pointed at. With an alerts feature, it would double the system’s usefulness.

The PVN cameras aren’t exactly built to go anywhere. They’re almost egg-shaped, but VueZone smartly magnetized the backs and includes with every PVN system four spherical magnetic connectors. These connectors have adhesive backs to attach to flat surfaces, and can also be screwed in place. Each holds individual cameras perfectly in place at any angle. The back of each camera is shaped in a way that high vertical angles can’t be reached, but the cameras can be placed upside down and video/pictures inverted.

VueZone’s PVN is an amazingly simple, easy to use camera system. It has no wires, no cables, no mess, no software setup, nothing. Just turn it on, register, use the included QR code to download the mobile app, and it’s up and running. I’m impressed with the ease of use and overall design and implementation, though the iPhone-specific functions should be available on all mobile platforms and motion-sensing cameras should be able to send alerts to smartphones. For anyone who needs a camera system that’s available on demand, quiet when not needed, and easy for anyone to set up, the VueZone Personal Video Network is an strong solution.

Bottom Line: If you’re looking for a simple, relatively inexpensive way to keep your eye on something or someone, at the office or at home, and you own a smartphone, VueZone’s PVN is a great option.

You can buy the VueZone Peronal Video Network at Amazon for $289.95, which includes 2 indoor cameras.

Pros:

Easy installation, no computer required, solid wireless range

Smartphone apps work well

Online system is free to use (premium memberships are pay-for) with all the basic, required functions

Cons:

No alerts feature limits the general use of the cameras

After what happened with the recent riots in London, it wouldn’t hurt to start planning for one closer to home. Like any other natural disaster, it doesn’t hurt to be a bit prepared, so that you’ll be able to withstand the heat, as well as fight back if need be.

If sh*t hits the fan, an armored vehicle will keep you safe, no matter where you’re at! The International Armored Group is a cool company that offers a wide variety of armored cars, so you can have anything from a BMW 7-Series to a Range Rover and your standard truck. You can even customize it to fit your individual needs. And don’t forget about the Maruader armored car. Checkout Top Gear’s review.

Be ready for any trouble with an outdoor home security camera. The Flood Light DVR security camera looks like a regular outdoor floodlight, but allows you to see if there are any trespassers on your property so that you’re ready for action if anything happens. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

If you see a gang of people ready to get their loot on, the Jet Pulse Water Cannon System Kit will come in more than handy. Made from stainless steel, the kit has three water firing modes (short pulse, long pulse or continuous stream) so that you can do some damage with having to really harm anyone.

Although it’s made for running, it can still provide you with essential info you might need if you’re ever in the wrong place at the wrong time thanks to accurate GPS location, touchscreen interface and heart rate monitor so that you can tell your survival story of how fast your heart was beating when you almost got caught up on an angry mob!

This heavy duty 16 1/2″ long strong beamed Stun Baton Flashlight is also a 130 db alarm and a 200,000 volt stun baton. It comes with an attachable red cone for signaling or danger warning.

When all else fails, the best thing to do in case a riot occurs would be to gear up and put on some protection gear. Suiting up in some full body amour will get you pumped for action and safe from any violent blows. We particulary like the Body Guard from David Brown.

Yup, you heard right, BURN THEM! Currently in development is an Active Denial System, which is a new class of nonlethal weaponry that uses rays and energy to rapidly heat up someone’s skin, so essentially burning them. While stile not available, a nerdy geek friend can probably whip something up similar to it!

The second most frightening thing an iPhone user can experience, besides dropping and breaking their screen, is having their iPhone lost or stolen. And considering how connected people are to their smart phones – living their lives online, the loss is keenly felt. One minute you’re in 2011 checking in at Foursquare and Twittering about how good your lunch was, and the next you’re stuck in 1975 looking for a payphone to call AT&T to deactivate your missing phone. And if it was stolen, you’ve suddenly going through feelings of being violated, withdrawal symptoms of not being able to use your phone (and let’s face it, we’re all addicted), and worry that your personal information is at risk.

So, what’s one to do when that iPhone goes missing? Well, the best thing you can do is remember the old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” There are several things you can do ahead of time to not only track your missing phone and find it, but to insure your valuable data is wiped in case you don’t.

1) Enable the AutoLock passcode feature

Sure, having to input a password into your iPhone every time it goes to sleep is a hassle. But remember that if you lose it, you’ll want to protect yourself and having that Autolock passcode will protect you since if someone inputs the wrong passcode 10 times, the phone automatically wipes all data. And you can set your autolock passcode as either a simple 4 digit passcode for convenience (with over 10,000 different combinations) or you can use a more complex passcode with letters and numbers by disabling the simple passcode option for more security.

2) Find My iPhone App

Next is to download and install the free Find My iPhone app. This app will enable you to go online and track your missing iPhone using the app and the phone’s GPS chip and Google Maps. In addition, the Find My iPhone feature will also send you an email if the device is activated after you’ve had it turned off. The way it works is that you download the app and then add a MobileMe account under your Mail and Calendars section. Then register your phone through the app and it becomes trackable.

Apple is also announced plans to offer Mobile Me free to iPhone users as part of their new iCloud service in the fall, but the good news is that Find My iPhone is free to all users now. The thing about FindMyIphone though, is that you have to have an iPhone 4 to start using the service. After which, you can add other Apple devices including iPhone 3Gs, iPad, or iPod and track them as well. This leaves me a bit confused. If Find My iPhone can find an 3GS, then why not let 3GS users qualify right away? But that’s the rules.

3) Alternative iPhone Tracking Apps

But Apple’s service isn’t the only phone tracker out there. Other app options include – iLocalis, Device Locator, Fone Home, Mobile Spy 3.0, and Gadget Trak. They all work in similar fashion with some being free, and others being subscription based. iLocalis, for instance, not only offers tracking, but can also remote wipe your device should it be lost or stolen. The downside with iLocalis, however, is that you must jailbreak your iPhone and download it through Cydia. Device Locator has an interesting function that will make a noise or even lock the phone down to make it useless to a thief. It’s $4.99 for the app, but after that, it’s free to use. Fone Home has an option I love – it takes a picture of the culprit who has the phone using the iPhone 4′s front facing camera. It then allows you to track the phone online and find who has it.

4) Disable your iPhone’s SIM chip

Regardless of what app you use for tracking your phone, once it goes missing, immediately call AT&T or Verizon. Tell the operator your phone has been lost or stolen and they can deactivate the phone’s SIM chip. This will prevent whoever has your phone from using it to make phone calls or buy Apps. (It’s also a good idea to immediately change your iTunes password). Now, all of your information/settings that you entered on the iPhone are still there for someone else to access, sadly, but hopefully the auto lock wipe feature will handle that. Corporate users, and those who use Microsoft Exchange have an option though … and that’s the Outlook Web Access. With Outlook Web Access, users can log in, go into options, click on Mobile Devices and select Wipe All Data from Device. Once it’s wiped, you will receive confirmation and your worries are abated.

5) Change your iTunes password

Also, to be on the safe side, it’s always wise to change all your passwords for your apps and email (and especially iTunes) and advise your friends and family that the phone has been stolen so they are aware.

6) I Found Your iPhone Good Samaritan website

There are some good Samaritans out there who want to do the right thing and as such, I Found Your iPhone (http://ifoundyouriphone.com) is another source for trying to locate your lost phone. Once you register with name, email, model phone and optional serial number (again do this as prevention), the service allows you to create a custom wallpaper which directs whoever finds your phone to contact you through the site. If someone finds your phone and contacts the site, you will have a message on your personal page with the finder information. You can then contact the finder and make arrangements to retrieve your phone – you may even provide a reward if you wish.

7) Contact info sticker

A low tech measure is to put a sticker with your contact email and offer of a reward inside your phone case or on the back of your phone. That way, if a good samaritan finds it, you may get it back. And services like Stuffbak can help you do just that with preprinted labels and membership listings to reporting and recovering your lost or stolen phone. Users have also texted their own missing phone offering a reward for a safe return. Some think that keeping your IMEI number is a good idea as well and it’s always a wise idea to keep that information for your records. You can get it usually by pressing *#06# on your phone. But the bottom line is, if you can’t track it by Mobile Me, then AT&T or Apple are unlikely to do anything about it with you IMEI citing fears you’ll sue them later for bricking your phone. However, there is a service that may do it for you. According to one source, users with lost or stolen phones can email the IMEI to cop@vsnl.net. We haven’t tried this but according to FBHacker, your mobile phone will be traced and recovered within 24 Hrs through GPRS.

8) File a police report

Lastly, if you’ve failed to take preventative measures, the only thing you can really do is file a police report and hope for the best. We’ve heard of some people getting creative and offering a reward or setting up a sting under the guise of a contest in order to lure the culprit who took your phone, but that can be dangerous. It’s best to let the police handle it.

And in the end, if you’re contract is up, the culprit may have done you a favor, freeing you to get a new phone subsidized by renewing your contract. And with rumors that Apple will be announcing an iPhone 5 (or some say it’ll be called the 4GS) within the next few months, that could be the silver lining in what is otherwise a very dark cloud.

Given all the BS that’s happening in Washington over the country’s budget and the up and down craziness of the stock market, your money or most precious valuables might not always be safe in the bank or investments. For those looking to have their stash at home, in case anything ever went down in our nation’s finances (literally), here are 7 of the coolest and most unique home safes around!

<a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2008/04/electrical-outlet-safe.html"title="Wall Socket Safe" target="_blank">Wall Socket Safe

It looks like any other traditional socket outlet, but this particular one becomes a safe, holding all our valuables. Looking like the real thing, the safe can be placed anywhere and is easy to install. Just use a saw to cut through the wall’s drywall and make the opening. After, slide the socket safe in the opening you just made and use the key to lock it.

Surge Protector Safe

No one would suspect that you’d hide stuff in a surge protector. While it doesn’t work, it looks exactly like any working one would that you plug into a wall outle. The safe compartment measures 6 inches x 2 inches by three-quarter inches. The on/ off switch requires two AA batteries that are included.

<a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2009/08/dormvault-laptop-safe-prevent-college-dorm-thievery.html"title="DormValut" target="_blank">DormValut Laptop Safe

For those who don’t live at home and want the same protection as a home safe, is this cool DormVault, which keeps your laptop, electronics and other valuables safe and locked up in your room, hotel and more. It holds up to 17-inch laptops and harmlessly attaches to loft beds and other furniture.

Book Safe

Safes in the form of books have been around for some time, mainly, because it’s a great hiding spot, especially if you have a large library collection. It features center hollowed out so you can hide anything you need in the interior of the velvety soft spot. You won’t be able to tell it’s not an actual book because it’s made out of a real book!

SL-20700 Fingerprint Wall Safe

This Fingerprint Wall Safe is a bit more high-tech than the other safes and is meant to hold your precious goods as well as safely store any guns you have in the house. You need your fingerprints or a code to open the door and isn’t as inconspicuous as the others, but will do the job well.

Safemark Heavy-Duty Drawer Safe

The Drawer Safe is meant to be placed inside a drawer or a bolted down shelf so that it’s not an obvious hiding place, but well hidden in a desk or bedroom.
There is nothing worse than not knowing if you’ve been shot. Chances are that won’t be the case if you’re hit with an actual bullet. We’re actually referring to police training or just a friendly game of laser tag. So what’s an aspiring gun shot wound victim, or inducer, to do?

Drop $2,500 and get the StressVest. It delivers a real time shock, up to 4,500 volts, when your mark has been hit with a real gun retrofitted with one of their compatible, eye safe lasers. For police force trainees this is essential since it induces stress and provides a more real world experience, demanding them to think under the pressure of not only gun fire, but the possibility of actually being wounded in the line of fire. With each subsequent hit the voltage (i.e. stress) can automatically be increased. And unlike paintball, there is no mess to clean up and the chances of an unprotected individual being hit from a stray shot are zero to none.

In the event you’re looking for a more casual experience – you’ll need to have a federal ID to pick one of these up – the StressVest can be set to a vibration mode. Additionally, shooting distances can mimic that of the would be actual ammunition, and the lasers work through windows or windshields.

Laying your head to rest in a foreign place can be down right nerve racking. While you may know where you are, entrusting that your surrounding, or more explicitly the neighborhood your rented that apartment in, isn’t rife with thugs just waiting to kick down your door, is a completely different story. While the door/window alarm won’t prevent an actual intruder from entering physically, its audible alarm, which detects movement and sounds, might just be enough to scare them off. It attaches to any door or window and includes a watch battery for $15.

Lockitron allows you to lock or unlock your front door with the use of any Internet connected phone. It works by sending a signal to a small device plugged into your home’s router, which subsequently instructs the door to unlock or lock. The kits can be self installed and work with a wide variety of doors.

So how is this useful? You can provide guests or visiting family with a lock code, and even hook up workmen with a temporary code to enter your home all via text message.

They plan on launching an NFC Android app for the Nexus S that will allow you to enter your dwelling just by waving your phone over the lock.

Lockitron starts at $295 and is available now.

Brazilian police will soon use a special pair of glasses fitted with a small camera, that can track down criminals by capturing up to 400 facial images per second.
It works by wirelessly sending the recorded images to a database that can compare up to 46,000 points on a face, known as biometric data, and determine if they’ve got a criminal history or an outstanding arrest warrant. If a positive ID is made, an alert is sent back to the cop in the form of a red dot on the screen, where upon they can take action, though it’s not clear how much info is displayed.

The cameras are generally designed to scan faces at up to 50 meters, though they do have the ability to function from as far as 12 miles away.
Brazil plans on using the tech at football stadiums, concerts and the upcoming World Cup where it might prove intrusive to the average citizen, but ultimately save lives.

No lock is safe thanks to the LockCracker. According to the video it can unlock any rotarty combination MasterLock in about 30 minutes. Course if you know any of the numbers for unlocking the lock that time is cut down significantly. Great if you forgot the combination to unlock your master lock.

Clearly the device isn’t portable, which is a good thing. However, it does prove that a Masterlock rotary combination padlock can be opened using trial and error, but we suppose that goes for any lock of this type.

The LockCracker was developed by students at Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering in Needham, MA.

But that’s not all that it has to offer. The Creditor Carbon Fiber Money Clip is made from real carbon fiber, measures 6-inches in length (unfolded), has a titanium handle, sports the thickness of 3 credit cards and folds to 3 1/2” x 1 1/4″ and 1/8″ thick. The clip is removable for placement in a wallet.

You can pick on up for $199.95, though it’s currently on backorder.

Bluetooth can be useful for proximity alerts. The <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2010/06/bringrr-uses-bluetooth-to-help-you-unforget-your-cell-phone.html"title="Bringrr" >Bringrr device insures that you don’t forget your cell phone in the car and the <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2009/12/iwallet-a-fingerprint-reading-money-holder-with-a-bluetooth-proximity-sensor.html"title="iwallet" >iWallet keeps tabs on, whatelse, your wallet. But what about your every day bag or purse?

The Blue Watchdog is a credit card sized device that pairs with your smartphone’s Bluetooth connection. You slip it inside your purse and using the magic of Bluetooth, plus an app runing in the background it keeps tabs on your bags proximity. If the bag (i.e. the device) exits the smartphone’s proximity ranging from 1 to 30m (user preset) it emits an excruciating 100db tone that will have criminals dropping the goods and fleeing the seen of the crime.

The device is fully rechargeable by wall wart of USB plug and has a 120 hour standby time. So you’ll need to remember to recharge it after a few days of use and you’ll also need to keep your smarthphone on your person, not in the bag your protecting, otherwise it will be rendered useless. Even worse, your mobile phone could be stolen, which in turn will make you look like the thief.

The Blue Watchdog is said to be compatible with 80% of mobile phones on the market today and is available now for about $95 US.

Drunk and lose your house keys and you won’t be able to gain entry into your abode. Or perhaps you’re so trashed you can’t insert said key into said key hole.

Enter the Digital Deadbolt lock. Not only does it feature a keypad that accepts codes ranging from 3-20 characters long, but includes a key fob system. Just swipe the included fob past the sensor and the door will unlock. Each key fob is unique, so in the event one is lost it can be deactivated from the system.

Not only is this thing supposed to be tough as nails strong, but it can lock your door automatically after exit, insuring that your stuff is always safe and secure. 4 AA batteries are required for operation (included) and should last about a year. What happens when they die is a bit unknown, but presumably you’re locked out, or the door unlocks all together (update: there is a back up 9V battery, which hopefully provides enough time to replace the main batteries).

Installation requires a simple Philips head screw driver and cost is a reasonable $280.

Horseback Riding riding can be an exhilarating activity, and horses are majestic creatures, but never forget you’re dealing with a huge animal that could easily kill you if it feels like. Now, two companies are trying to increase the safety factor for the equestrian Eventing sport a little bit with inflatable air vests. You pull a short cord when you know you’re about to fall off, and a gas canister inflates the vest in less than a second. They’re available now for between $400-700, which is a small price to pay to keep your life.
