Just took a walk through the Culver City Costco. The’ve got the 16gb iPod Touch for $389.99 and the 8GB Nano for $189.99. Didn’t see all the colors for the Nano but nor did I flip through all 100 (exaggeration) plastic packets.
PCMag has got a pretty thorough review of the iPod touch. They’ve basically reiterated what we already knew (slim, sleek and cool) but have reaffirmed our dropped jaws. They’ve also noted a new feature: push the tactile button twice and you can jump right into song control; device locked or not. They’ve also taken a pretty close look at the Wireless iTunes store. You’ll be glad to know that it’s smart. If your signal drops during a download (which they note takes about 15-seconds to process for the average song) it will start up again where it left off when the signal returns to a usable strength – this will probably save your battery life. You’ll also be glad to know that any songs purchased on the iPod Touch will automatically be transferred to your computer once connected. We’ll have to wait on the Starbucks feature which goes live October 2nd, 2007 in NYC and Seattle. Further noted is that they think the Touch’s screen is a bit better featuring deeper blacks – perhaps its just admiration for the ‘no contract device’. Here’s the kicker. You can view YouTube clips but you can’t ‘send to a friend’. This means no built-in email functionality (although you can visit Webmail sites on Safari), at least not yet (fingers crossed and praying at the foot of my bed every night to the Apple Gods). Contacts can be edited, but not calendar events. As with all other iPods there is no FM radio and no recording functionality. Anyway…taking a deap breath…PCMag gave the iPod Touch a 5/5 star rating . Will I buy it? Hell no. I want the iPhone but with 3G and 16GB (more praying to the Apple Gods).
As you’ve probably seen by now Apple has posted details on its website on how to recieve your $100 store credit if you purchased an iPhone before August 22nd, 2007. To see if your eligable just go here, punch in your serial number and phone number. Shortly after you’ll receive a text messsage containing an ‘access code’ to redeem your $100 credit Here’s where it get’s intersting. Since Apple is on a ‘revenue share’ with AT&T for every phone purchased and activated - this presumambly includes text message fees in addition to voice plans - its probably safe to assume they are profiting off the $0.10 it costs to recieve the SMS with ‘redeem info’. Now I know what you’re thinking: “iPhone service plans includes up to 200 text messages”. Doesn’t matter. If you have a package AT&T still charges you - at least for me - what ever is the least amount. In any case, my point is made….
Got this via Engadget. Looks like some of the Apple stores are already carrying the iPod Touch. The online store still lists them as available on 9/28, though.
Josh Mobley is the guy who got his hands on the ‘Touch’ and managed to include some video. As you’ll see, he notes that the iTunes WiFi store doesn’t work. Perhaps they sold it to him by mistake?
I took the iPod Touch specs listed on Apple.com and threw them in what I’ve deemed the correct ‘priority’. Looks like it lacks Bluetooth!

More then 24 hours after the iPhone price drop and Ebay sellers are still pushing them out the door at a premium. You’d think that the Apple event would’ve hit the far reaches of the globe but I guess not. That’s what you get for not reading Gadgetreview. Huh!
Announced today is the iPod Touch. Some things you should know.
- It will come in two sizes: 8GB and 16GB - $299, and $399 respectively.
- It will have a WiFi
- You’ll be able to download songs via the iTunes WiFi Music Store and it will sync with your iTunes (available in 22 countries where iTunes currently is)
- Starbucks did a deal. When you are there, have your iPod touch and hear some music playing your iPod Touch will display it and you can buy it (genius)
- It will have Safari browser and the YouTube integration
- 22 hours of audio, 5 hours of 5 video playback (battery life)
- 8mm thinner then the iPhone
- Release data should be sometime soon (think Q4 Holiday Season - Late October)
Update: The store is back up and the iPod Touch will ship 9/28/07
Update 2: I’d also like to point out that Apple has fixed that stupidly annoying recessed headphone jack originally found on Rev 1 iPhone. If you recall, you need a special attachment to use some aftermarket headphones. Just another reason to hold off until Rev 2 of the iPhone - plus the 3g speediness and hopefully GPS. They’ve also moved the headphone jack to the bottom of the unit. Check out the pics below.
I don’t know this for sure - it’s a guess, ok - but I am predicting that Apple will release new iPods either on 9/18 or 9/25. Why you ask? We’ll first off Apple is currently running their College Student ‘free Nano (rebate)’ with the purchase of a Mac. This helps clear out a shit load of stock. Why the date? The ‘free Nano’ promo ran last year and shortly after Apple released new Nanos. Total shot in the dark but time will only tell.
Unfortunately, my MacBook’s screen began to flicker (known problem) and the Airport card has issues connecting to networks (note that I said plural networks - tested it to make sure it wasn’t just mine). Fortunately, I am still under my 1 year warranty.  I figured my best bet was to take it to the Apple store and drop it off for service. Ain’t that simple. First you have to make an appointment; I can live with that. But the real hook is when you get there at the specified time you sit around wondering when your next. They have a screen that displays your place ‘in line’, but the employees don’t give you a time gauge. I eventually gave up (after about 20 minutes of having zero communication) and called Apple’s tech support. If you’ve got a tech problem and you’re under warranty I highly, highly suggest this. Apple sent me a prepaid box direct to my door within two days. No line, no silly questions and no need for patience.
The 99 cent store will sell 9 4GB iPhones for $.99 on Thursday, August 9th. They expect over 300 -400 people in line by 7.30am that day. I bet it’ll be worse. The deal is only available at their first store in Westchester, LA. The 99 cent store has sold iPods in the past for $.99. Folks in position 10 - 108 will have the opportunity to purchase a scooter for $0.99. No word on what kind of scooter it will be.
According to comScore, Apple.com is now a top 10 web property. In May traffic rose to 120 million unique visitors, a 5% increase over April. The increase can be attributed to iPhone interest. I had no idea that Apple’s site drove some much traffic. Surprised they haven’t jumped on the banner ad boat. With that kind of traffic they could be making $3.6 million/month in banner advertising (not accounting for page views just uniques) assuming a $30 CPM. Course this would piss a hell of alot of people off and probably canabalize their computer business…just sayin’.
Some kid not more then a few weeks out of high school has been working with a group of ‘hackers’ to open up the iPhone. Too much tech jargon for me to really understand, but what he does make clear is that he would “look cool walking around with a T-Mobile iPhone”.
Are you concerned for his livelihood? Fear not. As he points out, a law was passed last year making it legal to unlock cell phones.
Anybody been to an AT&T store today? Rumors are circulating that the lines aren’t so bad there? If you recall, this was Steve Jobs’ recommendation on how to get an iPhone the day of the release which is today.
I’m actually pondering getting an iPhone and realized that my 2 year with Cingular/AT&T is about to end. So I am entitled to renew my contract with Cingular/AT&T and as a ‘reward’ get a new phone at ‘new customer’ cost (otherwise known as an ‘equipment upgrade’).
Since the iPhone is available to everyone, contract or not contract with AT&T, you’re best off to renew your contract if eligible (since you’ll do this anyway when activating the iPhone), get the new phone (think Blackberry or whatever is free and can be sold for a few hundred), sell it, and then offset the cost of the iPhone. Then register the new iPhone via iTunes and extend your 2 year contract yet again, but albeit a day or two later. I don’t know what the ‘fine print’ will say, but everything I’ve been reading seems to indicate that this should might be legit.
Update:Â Looks like this should work per the ATT&T site (this is from their FAQ): “Q. I just upgraded my phone recently. Are there any penalties or restrictions for upgrading to iPhone right away?
A. No. Everyone can upgrade to iPhone right away.
Just had a discussion with a coworker. He seemed to think that the iPhone won’t have a SIM card - at least that’s the rumor he’s been hearing. After extensively searching online (Google) the majority seem to agree…except for one forum contributor on Macrumors. The contributor pointed to Steve Job’s keynote address which confirmed the SIM card. I scanned through the video and snapped a pic to put you all at ease.
We’ve seen designs like this before but none quite so slim (5 wide). Keep in mind that it’s from the makers of the questionable Ionic Breezes, but that doesn’t mean every tower of power they put out is shite. The iTower Omega features 4 speakers and 2 subwoofers and 1 universal iPod dock perched on its head. No remote, so naturally I am disappointed.
Rumor time. Word on the street is that Apple will begin shipping a laptop later this year with a Nand FLASH memory only hard drive. As Computerworld points out, this is the same type of memory found in Apple’s iPods. Earlier this month, reports floated in (not on Gadgetreview) that Samsung has begun shipping a laptop this month with a hybrid drive: a combination of a spinning ‘classic’ hard drive and flash memory. One analyst, name Wu, says that these new Apple notebooks will be known (not called) as subnotebooks and according to him will have a chopped (smaller) down version of Apple’s current operating system (probably to facilitate the smaller storage space as a result of switching to Flash memory only). The flash memory based laptops should allow for a faster start up time, better battery life (less moving parts=less energy consumed) and reduce the risk of lost or damaged information since there no moving parts to break. Prices are still higher for Flash based memory so expect to a pay a premium for these computers, but as we all know, and have seen, Nand Flash memory prices continue to reduce, especially when you have a company like Apple selling millions of iPods that use this type of storage.
If you recall, after the release of Apple’s ‘i’ products we saw copycats and URLs pop-up everywhere. This product seems to leverage the recent release of the iPhone, but this time they’ve opted for the latter half of the name. The Hatphone by Nike, is not a phone or an accessory for the iPhone, but an accessory to the iPod Nano (isn’t this so yesteryear?). Apparently you can store your nano in the hat, use what is a ‘power mesh window’ to access the Nano’s scroll wheel, and run the headphones direct to your ears without the cords dangling at your neck. Since this product seems a little ‘out there’ namewise, one’s gotta think they are making a move to simply protect a trademark much like Cisco Systems tried to do with the iPhone.
Men’s and women’s versions available here for around $60.
Shed a tear because Apple is being hit, yes once again, with another suit. This time it’s not a company but a country. Norway has concluded that Apple’ iTunes breaks Norway’s consumer protection laws by not allowing iTunes music to be played on any other device (other then the iPod) due to its DRM or Fairplay technology. Norway has given Apple until October 1st to make its ‘code’ available to other device manufactures and it looks like Germany and France is are about to follow suit with Sweden and Finland closely behind. If Apple doesn’t concede they’ll be fined and eventually shut down.
We should add that rumors are afoot that Apple may allow device manufactures to license their Fairplay DRM.
Apple also announced, or perhaps didn’t, a Bluetooth headset for the iPhone. They make mention of it on the iPhone site, but don’t link or show any pics. We picked this up from CNet. Looks small and sleek, but not much more is known.
