So remember just yesterday, when I was getting all poingy happy about the half e-reader / half netbook hybrid? Well, I think I may have just beat that level of awesome but in a totally different direction. Today I’m talking about the Kohjinsha PA, a combination netbook and tablet PC.

No, seriously–this sucker has a 4.8″ WSVGA touchscreen, 1.33GHz Atom CPU, 512 meg of RAM and a 32 GB SDD. The battery is slated to run for 7.5 hours, and it even comes with an SD slot and a 1.3 MP webcam, all in a netsurfing portable tablet PC.

I am profoundly impressed by this, even though my chances of ever using such a device are so slim as to approach zero. I draw like a cat with a pen in its mouth after ingesting large quantities of peyote, so a tablet PC to me is almost less than useless. But still, I’m impressed–and the price is pretty impressive too.

If you want one of these bad boys, you’ll have to shell out a whopping $758 in Japan. Preorders are going on, and the prices range between $867 and $921.

Today I’m going to introduce you to a truly awesome gadget that you can’t possibly get your hands on before Christmas unless you know somebody or can shell out epic bribes.

We’re talking about the eDGe, and this little beauty is worth the $490 you’d shell out for it for one very good reason: it’s a netbook and an e-reader. All at once. That’s right, it’s BOTH.

It’s WiFi enabled and looks vaguely like a Nintendo DS that you hold constantly upright, like an actual book. It runs on Google’s Android system, joining a growing family of same, and can serve all the functions of both a netbook (send email, instant messages, surf the web, run apps, write notes and so on) and an ereader (it’s got a 9.7 inch E-ink e-paper display on one side and a 10.1 inch LCD screen on the other, just so you know what side gets what)

Their creator, Virginia’s Entourage Systems, has started taking preorders for the devices, so you can sign up for them now.

Strap in and brace yourselves all over, kids, because I got a HOT list of deals here for the upcoming Black Friday sales! Seems that Office Max dropped the dime a bit early on what they’ll be offering up for cheap the day after Thanksgiving (early?? It’s not even HALLOWEEN and they’re talking Black Friday!), but their incredibly gauche behavior brings you a whole lot of deals. Check THIS out!

How about an Acer netbook for $150? I know, you’re probably blinking rapidly and reading that again, but it’s true. And it’s not where the deals end…but where they BEGIN, my friends. How about a Compaq Presario AMD Athlon II dual-core CPU for $240? Maybe you like the DVDs…well, you can get a Memorex portable DVD player with seven-inch screen for $30. Start hunting for couch change now and by Thanksgiving you should have enough for even a Magellan RoadMate 1440 GPS. Just $70!

It’s enough to make even the most hesitant shopper think twice about clutching the wallet in a death grip.

Having just bought a new laptop I was excited to be able to work outside of my basement but wanted to find a nice accessory to keep my computer elevated properly and comfortable at the same time. I found one at Ikea that I like to call a laptop pillow.

This one pictured above is called the E-Pod Laptop Desk and it is designed to make any sitting situation more enjoyable when using a laptop. The E-Pod comes in three color choices and looks as if it sort of folds up for easier travel. It also has a carrying handle. The one I got from Ikea was only $15 and it has a small pocket in the pillow for your cell phone or whatever. This E-Pod from BrookStone looks to be of a bit better quality and costs $40.

I must say that I really love my laptop pillow and use it constantly. If you need something like this definitely don’t hesitate.

The price structure has been announced for the AT&T 3G MicroCell, a line of femtocells, devices designed to help AT&T customers get better reception inside buildings, as well as faster overall speeds. Described as being “like having a cell phone tower in your home”, the 3G MicroCell is the first such publicly-tested device of its kind.

But the web community’s getting pretty torqued about the fact that you have to shell out monthly cash for this little beauty–about twenty bucks a month for unlimited use and ten if you subscribe to AT&T wireless and home phone. Include the internet service in that last and you get the MicroCell free of charge.

It’s sort of a low blow, offering a device that’ll let you use the device you pay to use in all situations but then requiring people to pay for it. For crying out loud, they’re already subscribers–why not just send everyone a free one to keep your base interested?

So here’s a fun governmental conundrum for you, gentle reader–if you’re out driving, and you get a sudden message on your Twitter feed about road conditions issued by the state on whose roads you’re driving, would you consider this illegal?

The irony is, yes, it is. Using text messages while driving, even those issued by the state about road conditions, is illegal in several states. The no texting while driving idea sounds fair enough, until you consider that the states in question are texting drivers about road conditions.

Frank Hornstein, who co-wrote Minnesota’s no texting while driving law, said this, which effectively shattered the state’s Irony Meter:

“You shouldn’t be fiddling around with any kind of electronic gadget in your car while driving.”

And in Minnesota, of course, the state text messages people to describe road conditions. So basically, use a state service while driving, go to jail.

Well, if you’ve been worried about using your various Net-capable gadgets because of the lack of net neutrality law, then worry no longer. Seems that the FCC is about to adopt net neutrality as a set of general principles soon.

Net neutrality, in case you don’t know, is a standard that requires all internet service providers to treat all information equally in terms of download speed. For instance, Comcast recently decided to force BitTorrent users to accept vastly slowed download speeds as they gave precedence to other users. Technically, that’s not illegal, but the FCC did scold Comcast, and now with net neutrality, such actions as Comcast took will be illegal in the future.

So download away, folks–your ISP can’t stop you any more.

In a surprise move, without much hype before the announcement this morning, Nokia entered the Netbook market. Called the Booklet 3G, the 10.1-inch machine is powered by an Intel Atom processor, and includes 3G connectivity and hot-swappable SIM cards which should allow you to surf the net using the same plan as your mobile. They’ve also included A-GPS with a copy of Ovi Maps for firing up a location based map on the fly, a 12-hour battery life, WiFi, an HDMI output, webcam, SD card reader and Bluetooth. Form factor wise were looking at what appears to an Apple inspired 2.7lb aluminum body that measures just .78-inches thick. There’s no official word on a price or launch date, but I’d expect it well in time for holiday shopping.

Sprint has officially joined the subsidized Netbook race and it looks like they’re off to a running start. And we now know it will include a TI OMAP3530 processor, which should produce enough moving power for video and websurfing without negating significant battery life. Be warned, though, that the OS is a work in progress and that it will be far from ‘flawless’ upon release, although they plan on having the kinks worked out before the end of the year and will offer your choice of operating system. Price for the for the Touchbook remains at $399 – $299 for the Tablet and $100 for the detachable keyboard. And that pic above, it’s the real deal where as before it was a rendering.

Specs:

Texas Instruments OMAP3530 with Micron 256MB (RAM) + 256MB (NAND) Memory

8.9 inches 1024×600 A+ screen

Main storage: 8GB SD card — we decided to change from Micro SD to standard SD, so that you can easily upgrade it

Internal USB wifi 802.11 b/g/n powered by a Ralink 3070 chipset

Internal USB bluetooth class 2.1

FCC, CE, UL-certified, 5V, 3.5A power adapter

8.9 inches pressure sensitive touch screen

US Qwerty 24cm-large keyboard — around 95% of the size of a standard keyboard

Cirque Touchpad

Two Owolff high-quality internal stereo speakers

3D accelerometer

Two internal batteries 6000 and 12000mAh — it can be replaced with a screw driver

7 USB ports: three external, four internal, three of them may be reserved for wifi, bluetooth and keyboard

Bi-color silver/black case — see photos — with a beautiful dark-red back cover (we decided to go only for red for the first batch as it really jumps out, you won’t regret it).

Secured attachment system of tablet into keyboard

Independent magnet system for the tablet — we don’t want your Touch Book to un-magnetize all your credit cards while carrying it in your bag!

Hannspree, which has long been known for their LCD TVs and monitors, has pushed out a netbook computer called the Hannsnote, which is probably destined for the EU market only. Reghardware is quick to point out that is just appears to be a rebranded MSI Wind and based on the form factor and specs I’d have to agree. Under the hood is a 1.6Ghz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM and a 160GB hard drive. The visuals come courtesy of a 10.1-inch LCD, Intel GMA 950 and 1.3 megapixel webcam. Connectivity wise we’re looking at Bluetooth and WiFi, 3x USB ports and a 3-in-1 media card reader. Expect the Hannsnote to weigh 2.65lbs with a 6-cell battery and is available now for about $412.

Lenovo kicked out their first 12-inch netbook today, the Ideapad S12, and fittingly it is the first of its type to sport NVIDIA’s ION platform. In short, the NVIDIA ION platform combines an Intel Atom processor with a relatively high powered graphics card, the Nvidia 9400m. This means HD playback along with other computing feats not previously seen in a netbook. And the real kicker is that Lenovo is offering it for a sub $500 price tag. Other features include a full sized keyboard, 12.1-inch (1280×800) LCD, 160 – 320GB HDD, 1GB of RAM, WiFi a/g/n, HDMI output, 4-in-1 media card reader, XP Home, 3x USB, Bluetooth and the option of a 3-cell or 6-cell battery. The Lenovo Ideapad S12 will ship sometime this July, while the ION platform is due ‘late summer’.

Full release after the ‘leap’

Lenovo Energizes Mini-Computing with its First 12-Inch Netbook
Debuts World’s First Netbook with NVIDIA’s ION Graphics Processor

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – May 25, 2009: Lenovo today announced the IdeaPad S12, the company’s first 12-inch netbook. The new netbook takes the best in connectivity, style and entertainment features in Lenovo’s other netbooks and brings users the next level in netbook computing with improved usability and performance. These enhancements include a 12.1-inch screen, a 100 percent full-size keyboard and new graphics options with the NVIDIA ION™ platform.

“We’ve heard from consumers loud and clear about the need for affordable and extremely portable computing devices, and we’ve responded by introducing our third netbook with a completely new form factor, making mini-computing more usable and redefining value in today’s market,” said Dion Weisler, vice president, Business Operations, Idea Product Group, Lenovo. “We are pioneering new territory in the developing netbook arena by being the first vendor to give customers high quality video and entertainment capabilities in a netbook with optional NVIDIA ION graphics.”

Elevating Power and Performance
Whether it’s looking at photos, playing music, emailing or cruising online, consumers want smaller and more portable PCs. The Lenovo IdeaPad S12 netbook is raising the bar for higher levels of netbook computing with choices of the Intel Atom processor with Intel integrated graphics or the Intel Atom processor with NVIDIA ION graphics. Also, for the first time on a netbook with NVIDIA’s ION graphics platform, users will be able to enjoy brilliant 1080p high definition video with silky smooth playback.
“NVIDIA ION graphics help deliver the same features found in premium PCs at lower price points and new form factors,” said Rene Haas, general manager, Notebook GPUs, NVIDIA. “With enhanced graphics, the Lenovo IdeaPad S12 netbook is perfect for watching movies, playing popular games like Spore, flipping through vacation pictures or enhancing family videos.”

The IdeaPad S12 netbook offers plenty of up and running time with up to six hours of battery life to support the mobile demands of netbook users1. Because netbook users need to stay connected wirelessly, the netbook comes with WiFi connectivity and ready for 3G with an ExpressCard slot to enable connectivity2. To hold the photos, music and videos users keep on their netbooks, the IdeaPad S12 netbook offers ample hard drive storage and memory with up to 160 GB of storage and 1 GB of memory. For peace of mind in case data becomes corrupted, Lenovo’s OneKey™ Rescue System can help recover user data or device settings.

Loaded with Style and Entertainment
In addition to the netbook’s sleek and sophisticated ring pattern design in black or white, users can make the netbook their one-stop entertainment device, starting from the moment they turn it on. Lenovo’s expanded VeriFace facial recognition technology makes logging in a snap by recognizing the user’s face. If users want “on demand” functionality, they can go into the Lenovo Quick Start environment and check email, browse the Internet and more without waiting for the full operating system to boot. They can also don any set of headphones and enjoy surround sound audio with Dolby Headphone technology. If opting to watch video on an external monitor, they can easily connect through the netbook’s VGA port or HDMI port on select models. They can also choose among several multimedia formats to upload through the 4-in-1 multicard reader.

An Improved Computing Experience
Lenovo designed the IdeaPad S12 netbook for consumers looking for a super thin, portable and affordable device that offered a familiar, computing experience. Lenovo enlarged the netbook’s WXGA screen from 10.1 inches to 12.1 inches for better viewing and made the keyboard 100 percent the size of a full-size laptop to make typing easier and less cramped. And when it comes to portability, by measuring less than an inch thick4, the netbook leads the industry for thinness compared to other 12-inch netbooks. The lightweight IdeaPad S12 netbook weighs in at just three pounds5.

Pricing and Availability6
The IdeaPad S12 netbook will be available in June through business partners and HYPERLINK “http://www.lenovo.com” www.lenovo.com. Pricing for models starts at $449. Models with the NVIDIA ION graphics will be available later this summer.
