The average price for a pair of top end noise cancelling headphones is generally $300+. Not an easy pill to swallow if you’re listening on a $200 device. So what’s one to do on a budget yet yearns for the active noise cancellation? Creative’s HN-900 Noise-Canceling Headphones, what else?

To be truthful, they’re not even available yet, or at least that’s the case across a few websites. But the meat of this story is the price tag; $99. That’s pretty unheard of, especially when you consider them against <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/tag/noise-canceling-headphones"title="Noise Canceling Headphones" >Polk, Bose and Able Planet’s offering. By no account are we suggesting that they’re up to par in terms of sound quality with their more expensive counterparts, but considering they sport 40mm neodymium drivers, 40 hours of battery life on a single AAA battery, a detachable in-line mic cord, travel kit and a passive noise mode, how can you go wrong?

Wrapping your headphones around your iPhone probably isn’t the best idea. But then again nor is it the worst. After all, it does keep the headphones out of harms way and should for the most part prevent tangling. However, keeping them wrapped is another story. If you loop the earbuds through the wound cord you might end up damaging them, or worse, causing a knot that negates the intended purpose.

The Sinch is a simple approach to a common problem. Instead of wrapping and tucking in your ear buds this handy little accessory keeps your buds tightly wound around your phone without the hassle squeezing the buds through a loop. It stays in place by using the headphones input jack as a sort of stake and thanks to a set of magnets makes slipping the cord in and out of it clutches painless, all the while keeping things neatly stored away.

You can grab one in black or white for $16.

Custom fit headphones, as in ones that are molded to your ears, usually cost well north of $500. Not any more. JHAudio now offers a pair of custom molded headphones for a hair under $400 ($399 to be exact). When you consider the price and customization it’s actually is a bit of a steal, especially for any of those of you in the market for superior ambient sound isolation and don’t wanna hassle with active noise cancellation, which often means changing batteries and a bullky setup.

JHAudio says that their JH|5 PRO headphones deliver “unsurpassed quality and sound clarity.” Inside each ear bud is proprietary sound driver, which incorporate an unspecified amount of drivers that should produce bellowing bass, solid mids and crisp highs. In fact they sound so damn good, they’ve sold them to a handful of celeb musicians, including members of Aerosmith, Guns ‘N Roses, Lady Gaga, Linkin Park, Alicia Keys, Barry Manilow and others.

Now, unlike other high end headphones you’ll have to visit an audio specialist and have these custom molded to your ear shape, which enables the unparralled sound isolation. Once completed, you’ll be able to choose from 50 finishes or simply leave them in a clear acrylic shell allowing you to view the components inside.

The JH|5 PROs ship in a velvet bag inside a personalized Otterbox 1000 case that ensure your headphones won’t be damaged.

Parrot may be known for its A.R. Drone 2.0, but the company has officially entered the headphone segment with its Zik Parrot by Stark unit. The company’s first headphones are designed for the “smartphone generation” and are made to be an extension of your smartphone. The over-the-ear Bluetooth headphones feature playback control via simple gestures—swipe forward to move to the next track, up to increase the volume and down to lower it.

It also features a motion detector sensor that pauses the music when you take off the set and then starts it back up again once you place them back on your head. There’s even NFC connectivity that allows you to tap your phone to the headphones to connect. In terms of sound quality, the Zik headphones feature DSP (Digital Signal Processor) algorithms that offer true-to-live sounds (which they’re calling the “Parrot Concert Hall Effect”). It also has active noise control, providing an uninterrupted listening experience.

Taking calls is easy thanks to the mic inside the headphones, so you can easily transition from listening to music and taking calls seamlessly. With a charged battery, they can last up to five hours, but they’ll still continue to work if the battery dies by just plugging them in. Parrot has yet to release info on pricing and availability.

Headphones for $300 are nothing compared to Sennheiser’s new HD 700 ones that are priced at a whopping $1,000 ($999.95 to be exact). Sennheiser has created taken the “high-end headphones” to new heights with their beyond premium set. So what makes them retail at a $1K? Well, they not only feature an innovative headphone design, but they combine high-end sound using patent-pending ventilated magnet system manages airflow for low THD, offering clear trebles, precise bass reproduction and a crystal-clear sound.

The ear cups are designed so sound waves are directed to your ears at a slight angle for a more natural listening experience.
Competing with the likes of Bose, even Able Planet, is no easy feat. Both companies produce their own versions of noise canceling headphones, with Bose probably being the popular of the two due to a larger marketing budget and a brand that’s cache is partially held in the age of the company. Yesterday, <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2012/01/akg-k495-and-k490.html"title="AKG K495 and K490 Noise Canceling Headphones" >Harmon Kardon’s AKG division kicked out two new pairs of noise canceling headphones and today Polk has entered the fray with the launch of the UltraFocus 8000 noise-canceling headphones.

At first glance there is no disputing their refined finish, though we could live with out the carbon fiber inlay, though we’re sure a many car enthusiast and DJ will be happy to see this. Unlike AKG’s offering, Polk has included a set of iPhone compatible controls, though there doesn’t seem to be a mic for taking calls. There is however a function called “push to hear,” which not only kills the noise cancellation, but should boost real world sound to a normal level, all at the flip of a switch. They haven’t made mention of battery life, but we do know that they’ll include a set of 40mm drivers – pretty standard on a pair of headcans of this ilk.

In terms of pricing expect them to set you back $350, which is exactly on par with AKG’s top end pair.

Of note, the UltraFocus 8000 noise-canceling headphones boast a very similar styling to the Beats by Dre.

It’s been sometime since we’ve heard from the likes of Harman Kardon. They own a variety of brands and one of them is AKG, who just released two new noise canceling headphones, the K490 and K495. It’s not entirely clearly what separates the two, but the K495 cost more and weigh a fair bit more, so it stands to reason that they have larger drivers and more refined materials.

What is clear is that both models offer active noise cancelation powered by a USB rechargeable battery. That’s right, no batteries are included, which could be a boon to those that don’t like to deal with battery swapping or a major caveat to those that travel and burn through 40 hours of juice and don’t often find themselves close to a USB port. Fortunately, both models work with out power, though sound quality will be some what diminished and noise cancellation won’t be present. Also, don’t expect to find an inline mic or iPod controls, though we can gladly live without that feature, provided of course the noise cancellation of these headcans are all they are promised to be.

The K490s will cost $249.95 while the higher end K495s will sell for $349.95.

Despite the fact that the iPod and iPhone has grown to a ridiculous level of popularity, it doesn’t mean that they’re the best choice for listening to music. Some will wholeheartedly argue this, while I’ll flat out tell them they’re wrong. Why? Both are fragile devices that are heavy, cumbersome and require you to use a set of headphones. Ultimately, it’s not practical and nor does it provide me with that streamlined feeling I like to have if I’m taking a jog, jumping rope or lifting weights.

Last year I reviewed <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2010/06/sony-nwz-w252-w-series-walkman-mp3-player-review.html"title="Sony NWZ-W252 W Series Walkman MP3 Player Review" >Sony’s W252s. If you recall they pretty much answered my above quandary. However, they had a few shortcomings that lead Sony to issue a new version last month. The result? A lighter, easier to use portable audio player, the W263.

This iteration has done away with the magnets, which have been replaced with a simple on/off switch. The magnets, which served as power switched (off when attached, on when not), proved impractical, since many a people found a simple jolt in the bag could separate the headphones and thus draining the battery.

They’ve also reduced the weight (1.6 vs 1.2oz) and size making them more comfortable and less of interference when performing any sort of rigorous activity. However, I still had problems with positioning the buds at the correct angle to optimize audio response and more importantly bass. Sony does include a few different ear bud sizes, but your stuck with one pair of headphones with no options to upgrade. And speaking of which, the hardware from the previous iteration has remained the same, which is 5+5 watts of power and 13.5mm drivers.

The W263 are relatively bare bones in the feature department. Fortunately, in this case, that’s a good thing. Adding music is as simple as plugging it in to your computer’s USB port and dragging and dropping music files directly from iTunes to the player. The player itself boasts the same controls as the previous iteration, which include shuffle, play, pause, track skip and volume control. A small LED battery light changes from green to orange to red to indicate remaining battery life. A full charge takes 1.5 hours, producing 8 hours of playback, where as a 3 minute charge can provide enough just for up to 60 minutes of playback. I fully charged my W263 and haven’t seen the battery life deviate from the specs.

Sonically, I’m more than pleased with the W263. I received the Meb Keflezighi special edition version of the player. I loaded up the 2GB of storage (there is a 4GB version, though it’s not available in the special edition) with a variety of music, got the buds warmed up with a few hours of music and then cranked them during my workouts. The spectrum of sound is not the widest, though at loudest volume they held their own and didn’t distort. As already mentioned I had to reposition them to get the most bass response from the buds, but just as fast as I did that they would revert to their original position and reduce the lows. This is largely due to the shape of my ears and partially the band that connects the two ear pieces together.

Bottom line: A water resistant all-in-one MP3 player that will surely satiate any workout freaks music needs while in the exercise trenches.

Editor’s Rating:

4.5 out of 5 stars

Excellent

Pros:

Compatible with iTunes; drag and drop to add tunes

Water resistant build

All-in-one design makes the W263 ideal for workouts

Cons:

Stuck with one set of headphones

Buds may accommodate all ears for maximum audio response

You can buy the Sony W263 from Amazon starting at $60.

Still torn on what speakers and headphones to buy for your holiday travels? Boy do we have the answer: the Zumreed X2 Hybrid Headphones. In case you haven’t figured it out based on the above pic, the X2s combine a set of speakers with a set of headphones. Let us reiterate for the sake of clarity: these headphones have built-in speakers. Pretty nifty, no?

Inside the each can is a 4omm drive that presumably drives either speaker. Using them as a pair of headphones is as simple as removing them from the box and plugging them into any 3.5 headphone jack. Using the speaker portion of these headcans is a slightly different story. You’ll first need to charge the battery found inside a small control unit mid cord. Supposedly it’s good for up to 4 hours, but expect your mileage to vary with amplitude. Fortunately, recharge time is a purported 1 hour.

Call us skeptical, but we wouldn’t expect these to produce top notch sound in light of their gimmicky nature. Nevertheless, we applaud Zumreed for the ingeniunity.

You can grab them via Amazon for $160.

If you workout then you’ve probably at sometime in your life got tripped up by your headphone cord draped from your ears to your pocket. When the Shuffle was introduced it hardly resolved this issue, but since Apple released the model that included a built-in spring loaded belt clip we easily overlooked this caveat. Not Jeremy Saxton & Jacob Hall who recently launched a <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/tag/kickstarter"title="Kickstarter" >Kickstarter project to raise funds for the ODDIO1, a cord free set of headphones designed to work in conjunction with the Shuffle.

The headphone’s outer chassis is built from a nylon plastic while the inner ear cushion is crafted from of high-grade silicone. This should make them lightweight, durable and comfortable to wear during rigorous activity. This is further complemented by a set of 30mm drivers, which should result in a rather reasonable spectrum of sound. But that’s the hardly shining feature of these conceptual ear cans.

Located on the right headphone is a special slot specifically designed to hold the latest iPod Shuffle. Just plug it in and the Shuffle is converted into an all-in-one portable music player. The makers say that the controls are fully accessible and that there is no need to remove the Shuffle to sync or charge the device. They have plans to offer these headphones, which mind you include an adjustable headband, in grey/black, black/blue, and black/pink. Though for some extra scratch you can score a limited edition “Cupertino Colorway.”

To get in on these headphones you simply need to pledge $35.

With more and more people using their iPADs or other tablets for gaming purposes (I’m guilty of this as well), we’re starting to realize just how inadequate the standard speakers on said devices are. Like playing your XBOX 360 or PlayStation 3 on an old SD television with one speaker, gamers know there has to be something better out there. Oh for sure, you can lug around that big expensive gaming headset you got for your main PC or console, but it’s probably a lot bulkier than you’d want to deal with on a daily basis. That’s where the TeKnMotion Intruder headset comes in to play.

The first good thing about the TeKnMotion Intruder headset, is that it folds down into a very small package. The entire headset is fully collapsable, and it’s tiny draw string pouch won’t have a problem finding a home in your backpack, purse, or anything else similar – since it’s an on ear headset, you’re still not going to be fitting it in your pocket (unless you’re wearing a pair of Jncos). The Intruder is also extremely comfortable, which for something so small is saying a lot. I’ve worn much bigger headsets that made my ears hurt a lot more than these did – however those were a lot bigger and produced bigger sound.

Not to say that the sound is bad in these though – it’s actually pretty good. The two 40mm drivers deliver crisp and clean sound, and worked equally well when playing games, listening to music or a podcast, or watching a movie. They’re only standard stereo though, so no 5.1 surround virtual or otherwise here. The bass is also a little lacking in these headsets, but what it lacks in “oomph”, it makes up for in clarity and finesse. Highs come in crisp, mids are very clear, and the lows never seem to get distorted. I tried playing Infinity Blade and N.O.V.A. 2 with them on, and the games sounded better than I had ever heard them before.

The Intruder has a nice and short unified cable that gets the job done for tablet and smartphone gaming – the cord is literally the perfect length as there’s no extra to get tangled, or get in the way while playing (something that could be a death sentence to any accessory). Should you need it though, the TeKnMotion Intruder also comes with an eight foot extension cable, with two 3.5mm connectors (for your mic and stereo) and an in-line controller for volume and muting. This cord triples the length of the normal cord, and while it’s nice to have around I never found a real use for it. I’m sure I’ll be happy I have it someday but for the purpose of the review right now, I didn’t use it except to verify that it worked (which it does).

One thing that struck me as pretty cool is that the TeKnMotion Intruder comes with not one detachable microphone, but two. One is a very tiny little thing (it’s around an inch long) that’s meant for mobile applications – I tested it through a few phone calls, and it worked well, with me having to repeat myself about as much as I normally do (thanks for the network AT&T). The other mic is a flexible boom mic that’s about three times the length, and can really be made to pick up on your voice easily. I’m sure most people will stick with the smaller mic however, as it can be left plugged in while the headset is in the travel case without adding any extra bulk. That and the fact that both get the job done with pretty much the same quality (unless you want to fiddle and adjust the flexible mic to the perfect position) makes me wonder why both were even included in the first place.

Editor’s Rating:

4 out of 5 stars

Good

The Bottom Line: The TeKnMotion Intruder is a good piece of hardware for people that have limited space to carry a headset, but still want better sound than they’re currently getting from their mobile devices – as long as they don’t mind the sound not being as good as other higher end headphones.

Pros:

Extremely lightweight headphones means no extra bulk when traveling

There’s enough padding to make them really comfortable when using on the go

The sound is pretty much always crisp and clear, with almost no discernible distortion

Cons:

My ears started to heat up for some reason after about 45 minutes (could just be from the padding not letting them breathe)

No real reason for the two mics to be included – pick one and go with it

The bass lacks power, which is highly noticeable on any game or movie with explosions

You can pick up your own TeKnMotion Intruder headset from Amazon for the price of $59.99 which isn’t bad considering how expensive the competition is (and considering that what I would consider their biggest threat of NOX Audio is now out of business).

Generally speaking, a good pair of on ear headphones will outperform any pair of ear buds thanks to the fact that they can house much bigger drivers, which in turn produce more bass and a wider spectrum of sound. However, one major caveat to these types of headcans, is that they can become uncomfortable after prolonged use. Bose’s OE2is are anything but and produce superior sound without weighing down your noggin.

The Bose OE2is were announced this October and while they cost as much as Bose’s on ear headphones, they’re lighter, more nimble and as far as I can tell don’t make any sacrafices in audio quality despite their smaller size.

Available in black or white, there are two models to choose from. The OE2is, which I tested, include an inline mic and audio controls, where as the OE2s lack this feature. Unfortunately, Bose hasn’t told us what size drivers they’ve used, but I do know they’ve incorporated something called “TriPort technology” as well as “Bose acoustic equalization.” According to Bose, Triport Tech, which is proprietary, provides tonally balanced audio with deep low notes, where as Bose equalization fine tunes the frequency response, which sounds a bit redundant, but let’s not split hairs.

What Bose has made clear, though, is that the OE2s include memory foam ear cushions – the same stuff found in pillows and the Posterpedic mattresses. This is evident by just pressing on the ear cushions, but nothing is a better testament to this feature than the comfort of the OE2s, which is superior to any other pair of headphones that I’ve tested. Generally speaking, after wearing a pair of headphone for just under an hour my ears begin to ache from the pressure. However, I can easily adorn the Bose O2Eis for a few hours before having to take a break. But I can’t attribute all this comfort to the memory foam inserts. I can also thank the light weight build and the ability to adjust the headband to a rather large setting, which allowed me to shift around the placement of the headphones enough to alleviate some of the pressure on my ears.

In terms of calls on the OE2is, I was nothing short of impressed. In a loud coffee shop environment my callers made no complaints about background noise, and to be completely candid, it was a nice change of pace to go from taking calls on what usually are a set of ear buds. Keep in mind, though, that since these headphones block out more ambient sound – not as much as a pair of on ear headphones, but enough in most scenarios – it will be a somewhat unorthodox experience taking and making phone calls since it’s tougher to hear your own voice.

Now, when you get your Bose OE2is make sure, like any pair of headphones to break them in for a few hours before maxing out the volume. I did this for about 10 hours and they went from sounding good to sounding fantastic. The Bose OE2is have no problem delivering a full spectrum of sound, something that I’ve only experienced in much larger headphones. But it’s not just the spectrum that is impressive, but the tonal accuracy and fidelity that they can achieve. Bass, which on its own isn’t an accurate representation of a good pair of headphones, can be heard in the most subtle of audio scenarios, even when their is a heavy mix of mids and highs. To put it plainly, these headphones are very well balanced and rival larger headphones in the same price range.

Suffice to say, but the Bose OE2is are nothing short of impressive. Sonically they performed above and beyond their class and are easily the most comfortable on ear headphones that I’ve had the pleasure of testing. They don’t boast Bose Active Noise cancellation, but that is reflected in their size and price tag, which is $179.95, or $149.95 without the iPhone controls and mic.

Bottom Line: Great sounding, lightweight on ear headphones.

Editor’s Rating:

5 out of 5 stars

Perfect

Pros:

Lightweight design with memory foam ear cushions for added comfort

Great sounding

Inline mic and controls

Cons:

A tad expensive; start at $149.95

Not the hippest looking of headphones

White might get stained with heavy use

The Beats headphones have long been synomous with a young urban crowd. While this has paid off in dividends to its founders, its left the older, business class crowd out in the cold. Don’t get us wrong. We’re not trying to stomp on their parade. We applaud Dr. Dre and Jimmy Levine for building a brand that has pretty much set the bar in terms of design when it comes to headphones and earbuds. However, we just don’t see an executive whiping out a pair of bright red Beats headphones while adorning a suit and a brief case. But that is all about to change with the introduction of the Beats Executives.

Beats has done away with the plasticky facade and replaced it with a sleek brushed metal finish. These headphones are wrapped in what we can only assume is supple leather. And while we don’t know the size of the drivers or what other tech lays under the hood, we can tell you that there is active noise cancellation and an audio performance that is said to deliver “pure, crisp audio integrity with soaring highs, deep bass, and true mids.”

As it happens we’ll be at a Chrysler and Beats event tonight, where we might just get a hands on with the Beats Executive.

Update: We unearthed a Monster store link. The Beats Executive are listed for $399.99.

We love saving money while saving the world. And that’s just what the BladeBuddy promises. It’s an ultra simple concept that can vastly increase the life of your disposable razor blade. Yes, DISPOSABLE razor blade.

Generally speaking, a razor blade’s life is good until that green strip disappears. After that, you’ll start to pull, instead of cut the hair out off your face. This can lead to irritation not to mention a healthy dose of pain. The BladeBuddy promises to significantly extend the life of your razor blades by months. You see, after just a few shaves, at least according to the manufacturer, the standard razor blade bends, which is an inherent design flaw. The BladeBuddy, when used correctly, corrects the blade, returning it to almost like new; it straightens the blade.

To use the BladeBuddy you simple need to lube it up with some shaving cream, set the blade flat on the surface and push it forward, with light but consistent pressure at a moderate speed. Repeat this 15-20 times and you should have a like new razor.

You can buy the BladeBuddy for $19.99, which includes free shipping.
