In case you haven’t noticed the storage market is like a black hole; there’s just no end in sight to where capacity will max out.  Kingston announced today their 256GB DataTraveler 300 USB flash drive.  That’s a two fold increase in capacity from last month’s announcement and almost double the price at $900.

The transfer write speed maxes out at 10Mbps while read time is 20Mbps, which means you’ll be killing more than a few hours of your life if you hope to transfer the drive’s entire contents to your computer.

No word on a release date, but it looks like it’s heading to the UK first.

3.5-inch Floppy Disk USB Flash Drive

June 22nd, 2009 1:01 PM | by Christen da Costa

floppy-usb-flash-drive

Depending on your age, the 3.5-inch floppy disk will either look familiar or totally archaic.  It held just over 3MB of data and was the second iteration in portable data for the computer.  Before that it was a 5.25-inch floppy that held less data, was about twice the size and was literally floppy, hence the name.  The 3.5-inch floppy USB drive merges a bit of the old with the new and gives reason for not only this article but a little reminiscing, something I’m doing a lot of as I get into my 30s.  It looks like a concept only, but of all the flash drives we’ve seen in recent years there is no reason why this one shouldn’t get produced.

In other USB flash drive news, Edge Tech Corp will also launch a 128GB flash drive.  It doesn’t look quite as rugged as Kingston’s offering, but at $389.95 it definitely airs on the side of economical, all things being relative of course.  You can preorder it now and it will ship 7/31.

Phallic 4GB Elephant Flash Drive To Hump Your Computer

June 15th, 2009 3:05 PM | by Christen da Costa

4gb-elephant-usb-drive

We’ve seen our fair share of cool USB flash drives, but none so phallic and perhaps anatomically correct as the 4GB USB Flash Elephant Drive.  To make matters worse, and I don’t think this was the manufactures’ intention, it’s part of the ‘bone collection’, whatever that is.  It’s $30 and includes a removable water resistant case.

I’m not sure why, but Mimoco’s Mimobot flash drives are so darn attractive.  Well, actually I do know why: it’s all their cool facades.  This time around they’ve updated their line of Star Wars flash drives and included variations of Darth Vader.  Best of all this iteration of the flash drives features a USB cap that doubles as a mask and when removed reveals the face beneath.  And set for release at Comic Con, Mimoco will unveil a 3rd installment, limited edition – 500 to be exact – Darth Vader drive which will actually feature Luke Skywalker’s face, just as Luke imagined himself on Dagobah in Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.

How do you add 8GB of additional storage to your Macbook Air without cracking open the machine?  Simple, you buy the EagleTec USB Nano Flash Drive.  As you can see from the pic it’s so damn small that it runs flush with the Air’s body – okay, almost flush.  Measures 19 x 15 x 6mm and is available in a 4GB ($22) and 8GB ($33) capacities.
