Tivo Discontinues Loyalty Program

Tivo Kills Rewards Program
As of 5/28/08 Tivo will discontinue their rewards program. According to ZatzNotFunny, Tivo has upgraded the reward prizes to include the HD boxes for 120,000 and 150,000 point, which also includes lifetime service. David of Zatz is ‘hardcore Tivo’ and somehow he has only managed to amass a mere 90,000 points. So help him out and sign up for Tivo, and make sure to mention him as your referral. For his referral email see his post (I don’t want him to get more SPAM than he is already soliciting to himself).

Update: David asked for it, now he’s gonna get it (wink): davezatz@yahoo.com

Blu-Ray Wins HD DVD Battle and Rolls Out Make Up Line to Prove It…?

Cargo Blu-Ray Makeup 2
At a glance, the title of this article has complete credence given HD-DVD’s recent demise. Heck, Netflix just signed on to do Blu-Ray only. But the reality of it, is that Cargo Cosmetics launched this line of make up specifically to mask the flaws that high def does so well at pointing out. According to CNET they ’skirted copyright’ by replacing the ‘-’ with a ‘_’. So it’s Blu_Ray, not Blu-Ray Mr. Lawyer pants! Is that legal?

HD DVD Boasts Largest Capacity Disc – Take that Blu-Ray

HD DVD Logo
In the hopes of keeping rival Blu-ray at bay, Toshiba, developer of HD-DVD, has announced its 51GB capacity HD DVD. Blu-Ray has long been regarded as the technically superior disc with a 50GB capacity. Previous HD DVD discs only held 15GB or 30GB of data. The extra capacity is accomplished through a 3rd layer. It remains to be scene if the “3rd layer will increase cost and production time significantly.

HD-DVD and XBox HD Movie Comparison

HD-DVD and Xbox HD Compared
Jake Ludington compares the Xbox Marketplace’s HD movies to that of HD-DVD. His verdict? Both pictures are almost identical but the Xbox’s HD movies are slightly brighter.

Check out Jake’s full comparison here.

Rip PS3 Games and Blu-ray movies on your PS3

Rip PS3 Games on your PS3
According to an article on Ehomeupgrade, ripping Hi Def Blu-Ray movies and PS3 games is as simple as typing a line of code into the ‘terminal’ of the Playstation 3.  Apparently, this requires the PS3 to be loaded with a Linux OS and can actually be done on any computer running Linux with a Blu-Ray drive - its just ironic that you can already rip PS3 games on the system.

Hit up Ehomegrade for more details.

Hello Kitty Slot Loading Progressive Scan DVD Player

Hello Kitty Slot Loading DVD Player
We generally steer clear of such novel devices, but given the time of the year and the popularity Hello Kitty we couldn’t help but post this. Costing a mere $89.99 at Target via Amazon, the device is so cheap that any bonafide Hello Kitty collector should feel ashamed if they pass this item up. It plays DVDs, CD-Rs, MP3 discs and to our surprise can output in progressive scan. Also includes a 48-key remote control.

Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive Price Announced and Will Arrive in Japan in November

Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive
According to Engadget, Japan will be the first to receive the HD DVD player add on for the Xbox 360. The HD DVD drive should emerge over seas sometime in November (17th or 22nd) of this year and sport a $170 price tag (this is Japan pricing but US pricing should be comparable). Stil no word on when we’ll see the add-on in the US, but we expect it some time shortly after its release in Japan. In more Xbox 360 news, Microsoft will provide a software update that will allow for 1080p resolution although we were under the assumption that the TV market didn’t currently have any sets that could actually display this resolution (I have a SXRD Sony TV that lists 1080p in it specs but according to numerous reviews it lacks this feature).
